if you have x rep you can see hat sorta stuff

it says (removed) to me

That's all I see

7:02 PM
Thanks!

google is always watching ;)

@Mateo: smart man! Google is pretty good at caching

why remove it

Because I accrued already 2 delete votes while I was editing it...
Now I'm editing off-line...
Does anyone have a good markdown editor?

I still cannot see close votes

7:04 PM
(I'm using gedit now)

Lbreoffice

there was a good one in the repo I was using

ReText
I forgot the name, it is still there
you can do side by side
not really easy to do the pictures, but it works

@Virusboy

@Mateo: thanks!

@Virusboy: meta.stackexchange for you!

I have to flag for deletion

Too many programmers, not enough designers, cooks, System engineers, ...

Is that what they call them now, programmers?

your rep is going down the drain...

I only had 101 to start

user139252
I've only got 88. Need me some more.

yep en 78 now...

user139252
7:08 PM
Trying to be helpful here. Sometimes.

@Virusboy HAHAHAH.

@DonaldBrown: did you read the back-up Q&A? :P
@blade19899: not funny!
Have you ever posted a question on meta.stackexchange?
They're a bunch of vultures...

Bad ones too

user139252
@Fabby yes, though back up was not a concern with the system I had in question. As I said, it was just a mess-around system.

Anthrax-spreading ones!

7:11 PM
I've managed to get NitroShare working with libnotify. Yay!

I wish a mod could just stright up close it

Yeah, but it contains some valuable hints for your future install
;-)

user139252
I'm looking for a good SMS gateway right now. Want to be able to text my RasPi that I have hooked up to my TV to automatically open up Hulu for me. Because I am lazy and bored when I get home tonight.

That's what they do: they answer as quickly as possible and then you can't delete it any more...
@DonaldBrown: can't help you there...
@NathanOsman: been busy: no time to Nitroshare yet tonight!
;-(

No hurry.

user139252
7:13 PM
Yeah, didn't think so. That's why I didn't ask at first. Right now, I'm just enjoying being somewhere new and waiting for one of my students to finish testing so I can have some real work to do.

Any Destiny fans here?

yup
27 light Titan Striker

I have enough coins to get it too

@Mateo: 21MB for a markdown editor??? :(

user139252
7:17 PM
Apparently, community colleges in California block Sourceforge. So, looks like no downloading for me today.

user136984
:(

@Toroidal Removed tags as well

@Toroidal: get off FaceBook! Delete your account! ;-)

user136984
:D

user139252
7:18 PM
@Toroidal just don't try to watch porn on Facebook?

@Fabby oh well. there are online ones

user139252
Anybody who clicks a porn link on Facebook is asking for a virus.

I was going to say the same thing:
@Mateo: I'm looking at the options...

@Toroidal Linux Users affected?

7:20 PM
@Mateo That site is now perma-bookmarked
Most likely not @blade19899

@blade19899: good one!

user136984
So do you only get the virus then if you download the fake flash thing?

user136984
Or is it a drive-by-download sort of thing?

I get "your browser is not supported" :D It doesn't like my security settings...

.exes dont work/run on Linux

user136984
7:21 PM
And after you have downloaded the malware, are you allowed to carry on watching the porn? :P

@Toroidal: did you read the article before posting it?
:D

user136984
@Fabby No, but before anyone replied I read it! ;D

I remember a Win 3.0 virus called "bouncing t....s"
3
on the MSN network... pre-internet!

@Fabby I should. I made the damned thing

stackedit? or bouncing?

7:23 PM
bouncing

:D
True!

I still think it was the funniest shit ever

@Virusboy Wait....

I Love you was the funniest!

You made a virus?

7:24 PM
Couple dozen actually ticking time note was my first

user139252
Well duh, his name is Virusboy.

:)
@Virusboy Naughty...you're making Windows users lives that much worse.

I hacked the Federal Police of some small country!
:D

@Virusboy Do they do any actual damage?

Actually I use Virusboy now because my old would well cause too much moer distractions

7:25 PM
@Fabby o.O

Smoke! BRB

Some did

Bad @Virusboy Bad....

Then there is the Nelson Bomb

I made a script once that put a job with thousands of full-black pages onto any attached network printer. My middle school was furious, because I used an open Administrator account on the WinXP machine to add it to start up.

user139252
Not really a virus, but definitely a nuisance.

OH yea I did that at a local library
Plugged in a usb started printing off porno pics

user139252
You're rude. What if there were children?

user139252
Just think of the children!

i dont
just of mine and she wasnt born

7:29 PM
@Virusboy: just admit it: you didn't do that in the US...

I have never held a Passport in my life

Porn on a printer in the EU is just funny!

Colorado Springs Public Library. The Head lady got quite a rosey cheek

:D
Who's starring all that???

....

7:31 PM
It's not interesting to the guys that come later!

user139252
Has Microsoft fixed the vulnerability in SAM on the newer versions of Windows? I know you can still break into Windows 7 with a live CD and chntpw

@Seth: weird starring going on again...

yes 8 addressed that issue and resolved it completly

user139252
Darn.

ikr
best exploit ever

user139252
7:33 PM
What are our options now, then? Just rainbow tables?

bbl \o

Thanks @Fabby.

@Seth: if that was irony: I'm sorry!

I wasn't thinking about irony..

Oh, so it helped!

7:35 PM
@DonaldBrown we have the ssh have via Server still but windows is actually pretty airtight

(whew)

Yes.
I can only figure it out when I'm watching.

Ah...
because the moment I called you in, a bunch disappeared...

oh really?

(mmmh... might also have been window resize...)
Yeah, BUT a person on my block list was lurking in the shadows...
blue icon...
gone now...
Can I see blocked people in my profile?

James kayla

Welp. Never mind - I'm not filming a tutorial.

Curse people who use the family camera and don't charge the darn batteries :P

@RPiAwesomeness what happened?

7:39 PM
@Seth This is how Meta SE sees it
5
A: Feature Request: Starring system that isnt easily abused

Donald.McLeanI vehemently disagree with this request. Who decides when something is nonsense? And why should we discourage it? I'm mindful of a quote from the legendary Gene Wilder in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, "A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men." There are real, serious...

This has happened twice now :P

oh :(

Oh well. I can do a screencast tutorial instead.
Now to get everyone to shut up and stay quiet...

@Virusboy That's how some people see it.

well accorded to 18 people im wrong
And unfortunatelty theis question has been met with such, that itll never be taken seriously the way it should

7:41 PM
trust me, we aren't the only ones that get annoyed.

@Virusboy I'd say it's more of a) they don't understand what you mean well and b) a star ban feature is just a bad idea.

It's not like star trolling happens all the time.
Easy enough to handle on a case by case basis.

its seems to happen more and more and on other sites as well

7:44 PM
I think a star should cost you some rep!

> A couple of days ago, a user posted a comment on our forum regarding apps harboring adware that can be found on Google Play. This didn’t seem like anything spectacular at the beginning, but once I took a closer look it turned out that this malware was a bit bigger than I initially thought.

no @Fabby

@Fabby no

Why not?

seriously, I've hit 20 stars in one day before. That's 20 rep.

7:45 PM
that ruins the whole point of chat

For a stupid star?

^

OK! OK!

In other news, Vi/Vim is in private beta!

gratz
@Whaaaaaat will be happy

7:46 PM
I use stars only when I think that the next bunch should be aware of that!

Guys there has been virusses in the playstore.

I wasn't even aware of stars until I got starred 20 times or so and received a badge for it!

That infected millions. Can we focus on that instead of arguing something thats way to minuscule to argue

I use them sparingly... Like the cost money!

Yes because google is lazy and arrogant

7:47 PM
@blade19899: the Facebook Pr0n virus?

@Fabby exactly. Only stuff you think lots of people will be interested in.

or smth else!

A good test is if you think other people will star it too then it's probably star worthy.

@Fabby Nope something else. Check link i posted

@Seth: yeah!

7:47 PM
maybe a limited number of stars, start with some, when you give them to people they get a star, new stars introduced over time and activity on the main site, that a way saying something good in chat is rewarded, and you don't go star crazy

@blade19899 You have no idea what being a mod is all about

However, let's stop feeding the trolls now.

@Virusboy True. I know nothing. I'm Jon Snow.
Can we please just drop it.

moving on indeed. Is there a point in doing a ditro upgrade yet, or is trusty safe to stay in

if you are using the ubuntu sdk, there was reason to go to 14.10

7:49 PM
Why would you ever want to upgrade to the staging version???

@Virusboy Trusty Tahr is Trustworthy.

ah!
I look at it this way: 14.04=PRD, 14.10=STG, 15.04=DEV
So I'm staying on production...
Not the latest kernels, but for nvidia I've got xorg.edgers...
and that's it...

GTK is such a whiner. I've written a short C application that generates a ream of (seemingly) irrelevant warning and error messages. In fact, the warnings are longer than the source code.

:D
Are you sure it's C?
not COBOL?
:P

If anyone is familiar with GTK, please take a look and tell me what I did wrong?

7:53 PM
Your missing something big

(Ignore the memory leaks.)

user136984
sudo apt-get upgrade

user136984
Ooops!

user136984
:D

:D Amazing...

user136984
7:53 PM
Meant to type that into Terminal... :D

@NathanOsman i tend to. Have you defined anything at as far as Item 1 and 2?

What do you mean?

I noticed you have a function setup to call item 1 and item 2
but past that, i dont see how item 1 and item 2 are define when they are called

Incidentally, here are the warnings.
The two menu items are created on line 18 and 19.
...and appended to the menu on lines 26 and 28.

Yes, but they are all the same. Is this "Menu" a dymanic shifting one where the content is never the same

7:58 PM
No, I just wanted a really simple example that doesn't do anything and doesn't spew warnings.

simple is easy, but not short
C is often lengthy, try it in Python
and C s also Object orientated

This isn't a "move a simple app to a language that works" scenario.

looks like you are missing the stuff they had at the bottom

This is a "I created a test case with code from a large C++ project" scenario.
@Mateo I'm writing a question on Stack Overflow. I'll look at their example in a minute. If I can fix it, then I can answer my own question there for the benefit of others in the future.

8:02 PM
cool
I would try and run some code myself and see, but I'm running installs on a vm using most my processing

Q: Why is GTK spewing a ton of (seemingly) irrelevant warnings?

Nathan OsmanHere is a very simple GTK application that creates an application indicator: #include <gtk/gtk.h> #include <libappindicator/app-indicator.h> int main() { AppIndicator *indicator; GtkWidget *menu; GtkWidget *item1; GtkWidget *item2; GtkWidget *separator; indicator = app_...

@Yea what Mateo stated, you need to define a few things, Windows size, and banners and foots and all that good stuff.

Wait, someone is surprised GTK spews irrelevant warnings? O_O
2

@Seth mentioning it is irrelevant all in its own.
@NathanOsman I am curious as to why you have two Dev notes at top for.

@Virusboy "dev notes"?

8:07 PM
code comments
or whatever people call them now

There are no comments in the application.

im tired and should sleep

I should step through this in GDB...

porbably

8:21 PM
I made the warnings disappear!
gtk_init(&argc, &argv);
^--- the missing line

user139252
Boo, warnings are fun.

ah, so that instead of a window?

Well...crap

user139252
?

GDB helped a lot.

8:25 PM
I just realized that because you have to use your Windows ID/email to set up an account on Windows 10, my private email and name is going to be shown to the whole world if I ever do any videos about Windows 10.
CURSE YOU MICROSOFT!

How's that?
Just create a new local user.

user139252
@RPiAwesomeness Just make a separate account?

Oh...true.
facepalm
I'm out of the Windows loop

user139252
So, is Windows 10 not horrible?

user139252
I've not gone back to Windows since Vista. 7 was okay, but I never really used it. My wife did, though.

8:27 PM
@DonaldBrown Eh...it was better in the first build I tried than the second

that e-mail login thing is interesting, someone was using it to login - but then the Internet was broke so it couldn't verify the password so it defaulted to a password for the computer they didn't know...

In the most recent (I think) build (9926) they tweaked the UI and icons and it's got quite a bit worse
@DonaldBrown It's still better than Windows 8, but the UI has gone back to be pretty awful
4 hours ago, by RPi Awesomeness
If they had left the UI as it was and just added Cortana/other new features, I would have considered it a viable option. Then they changed the UI and it's really bleh
4 hours ago, by RPi Awesomeness
Some things are too big (Window control buttons) and some things are too small (program icons + start menu icons), they moved the start menu power thing to the outside of the live tiles area (how does that make any sense), and the Cortana bar is non-resizable and quite big.

Apart from the ethernet bug, I don't have any issues with Windows 8.1.

hm, why didn't they just put the search where is always was, right when you hit that start

@Mateo ikr. It's so big and it's just kinda in the way :P
Anyways. g2g. 4H time

8:32 PM
then results could transform over the programs area, and a live preview could be show in the tiles area

@Mateo Yeah, good idea

start > search for pdf > select > see them displayed right next to it, same with searching websites - actually wait that is why i'm using ubuntu ;)

user139252
Yeah, that all seems odd. I just want to make my own OS that has everything I want from the different systems I use and call it done.

user139252
I want Gnome-type environment, Google Now from Android, perfect compatibility layer for Windows applications, and the versatility of Linux to just do what you want and not have any OS bloatware stop you.

user139252
Also, I really wish I could just save Cemetech's SourceCoder IDE as an application. I hate having to open Chrome just to make a simple TI app.

8:40 PM
do you do the web app shortcut thing?

user139252
It's not an actual app, per se. It's a web-pased IDE they have on their website to parse human readable text into the two-byte values that TI-Basic reads. cemetech.net/sc

hm, you might be able to make a style sheet to remove stuff then load it in a window

user136984
Is my flagging history it says "1 disputed", what does this mean?

user136984
Does it mean that someone marked it as helpful, and then someone else declined it, or vice versa?

8:57 PM

9:18 PM
Ah yes - the Ti-83/84 calculators.
I never had one myself but my brother did. He had the Ti-84 Plus Silver and I managed to get it working with a USB flash drive.

what
@DonaldBrown If you do this, you'll get all the monies. Put in a dock, though.

So basically Gnome Shell with Wine and Google Now in a VM?

Plot twist: @Whaaaaaat has no money :P

@Seth mhm
or else i would have built my new pc

;)

9:25 PM
but no, back in 8.04, i had a sick setup
gnome2 layout, with Cairo on the bottom. Push Compiz on all of that, it was a really nice and easy-to-use desktop.
well, what would happen if you just moved all the Windows DLLs into Wine?

@Whaaaaaat lawsuit

from a technical side...
WTF WINDOWS

anyone see pictures of their iot system yet?

@RPiAwesomeness You're being corrupted by Microsoft!

@Whaaaaaat I saw that yesterday.
That means I'm going to have a new compiler toolchain to support.
msvc2013_arm

9:41 PM
microsoft: causing more work for IT guys since Windows 3.1

because what I think people are thinking is > hey I can run my photoshop on it. when it probably won't

@NathanOsman Really? I'ld think the compiler used for windows phone apps would have been arm... So, not really a new compiler to support.

@Mateo yes. can i use it to replace my desktop? I wanna play Skyrim on it!

I predict:
> Angry customer: your Windows app doesn't run on my machine!
> Support dude: what do you mean? our app runs on Windows
> Angry customer: I've got Windows and it won't run... something about "not a valid windows application"
> Support dude: oh, you must be using Windows on a Pi - we don't support that
> Angry customer: but you just said...
> Support dude: yeah, the Pi has an ARM processor
> Angry customer: what does that even mean?
2

@Mateo They'll be pushing "run your apps in azure/cloud boxes on your handheld" and cheat on application responsiveness by putting the load on a beast rig. Then you'll just have a fancy remote-desktop launcher that is per application.

9:44 PM
@hbdgaf two words: network latency

@Whaaaaaat I didn't say I liked the idea. I said that's what will happen. And the commercial will definitely show someone running photoshop and halo on a handheld.

Kind of disappointed the #RaspberryPi 2 doesn't offer gigabit ethernet. 100 Mbps isn't all that fast anymore.
2

i didn't say you liked that idea. i said that network latency will kill this.

Probably... but you must remember - all the employees and designers probaply have fiber2home

Q: Translation error

Ivo Xavier Hi everyone! Where I can find this string in Launchpad to translate it correctly? In the photo we can see "Introduza SIM o PIN", it must be "Introduza o PIN do SIM". I've checked in Launchpad and it fine there. Don't know why in the nexus 4 is wrong? This error can be found when your typing ...

On the other hand, we might get onlive working on a pi then... ;)
@Toroidal he needs to file a bug on launchpad against the internationalization project.

or a mobile steam, that actually has games?

@Toroidal sadly, I can't point him to the procedure. The wiki page for it is [TODO document the process] (wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment/Internationalisation/…)
@Mateo That too, but I think steam on mobile will really just be the steam-casting feature on steroids... not actually running anything on mobile.

humblebundle had a decent game installer for the games you get with them, they could host ones in your library that are for tablet/phone, but yeah anything else...

Yeah, that's my hangup with onlive too. I like being able to buy a game and just have it, not lease hardware and then buy game subscriptions.

9:56 PM
that and what in the world is amazon thinking with their video watching/store/appinstaller trifecta on android

user image
2
I like their html5 ebook/online library reader though.

there were steps like > download the amazon app (not in google play) agree to unauthroized installs > download the amazon shopping app(only the phone version) > go into the amazon app and download the amazon video app> try to click on video from shopping app?

Yeah, makes about as much sense as crop circles...

and forced enable of one click buying, whoops ever time you accidentally tap you bought it..

What? You mean like this

10:10 PM
once you reply in g+ is there a way not to get posts that aren't direct replies to you?

is this a comment?

yeah

trying to find an "unfollow post" button? just a sec

huh, I just "muted" the post, not exactly what I wanted since it disapered...

yeah not mute.
I must admit I don't comment on G+ very often :P

10:12 PM
oh well, at least it was just the one post and not the person

View ripples is sort of neat...
Looks like no. Then you wouldn't get the pings either.

because I like looking at certain posts off and on, but not buzzing in my pocket whenever someone else makes a comment, unless responding directly
maybe an advanced notification setting somewhere, I'll look later

There might be in an app somewhere, but probably not int G+ proper at the moment.

yeah, the g+ phone app, ah there it is, in the app settings.
@hbdgaf cool, thanks

10:29 PM
Evidently I found a page that memory leaks in chromium. The tab consistently (when left open) hits the "Aww snap something went wrong" page. Maybe JS appends reaching a maximum of the engine somewhere?
Okay, not a memory leak... a failure to just kill the JS engine on the page - since it gets freed properly when the page goes all wooly and dies.
has anyone ever tried loopmounting a brtfs partition? performance - good bad or ugly?

user136984
Oh dear... We have got another possible HACKER ALERT here:

Q: Crack guest machine passwords with John the Ripper

user3046660I am curious to know is it possible to use john the ripper to hack a guest machine on virtualbox?.I have used it to crack user passwords on the host machine before, but would like to direct it to the ubuntu on vbox and crack the user passwords

user136984
:D

I wouldn't have put best left to other mechanisms in there. You'll get a JTR vs hashcat vs elcomsoft distributed hash cracking vs rainbowtables flamewar started, but yes.

10:58 PM
@Mateo: appindicator support just landed in NitroShare!

@NathanOsman sweet

It feels odd mixing Qt and GTK within an application.

yeah, that is one thing that should be baked in...
@NathanOsman the m&m were made out of left over cake which was also a lie ;)
maybe they took that question out...
