6:00 PM
@Seth Interesting, yes. Haven't had much time at all to mess with it - but it looks interesting enough.
Keyboard shortcuts seem a bit laggy

I want to install Touch on my Galaxy S4 but its not supported. /mad

@Virusboy phone support? like calling someone in india?

like Ubuntu Touch supported @Mateo

@Virusboy I am so getting me a Meizu

wonder if it won't ship to the us as well...

6:05 PM
I hope it will\
US Cell gets all the nice phones the other guys do
Its not a US Based Phone though

@Mateo nope
US will get an announcement in JUNE from an yet unkown carrier

Prolly Verison

@KasiyA it is kde, just well themed. I was able to get kubuntu to look nice when I was using it

@Mateo @Rinzwind can I get Plasma 5 for Trusty?

@Mateo told him 3 times :( but he dismissed me :(

6:07 PM
:/

I got Cinnamon to work on Trusty

@Virusboy sure, I tried it once.

hi @NathanOsman

6:08 PM
Thats common for those users @Rinzwind

While this technically is an acceptable answer, it would be preferable if you were to include some explanation as to what exactly it is these commands do.
Is that a good Canonical-style comment?

THe one where it explains how it solves the problem and what you did

@RPiAwesomeness yes

981 MB/s reading off three disks?

6:10 PM
You had me at 160 logic processors

hm, some nodes are doing absolutely nothing

That works great for parallel workloads.
I imagine compiling stuff on that machine is insanely fast.

how does one have so many

Look up the processor model number :P

its so pretty.
and expensive
i want

6:24 PM
^--- is very fast when the installation files are stored locally :P

i had to redo my install
10 fucked up my wireless drivers some how
I can only get the E5 series @NathanOsman

E5 series?

for Xeon

Oh, the CPU.
Apparently, I can get a used one from this guy for $600.
Some interesting things on the spec sheet from Intel:
- Recommended price: $4227.00
- Can be paired with up to one other processor.
- Supports up to 1 TB of memory

newegg.com/Product/…-na--na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

6:40 PM
What the hell are you talking about? A CPU for $4.2k??? Why is that one so special?

its a xeon for one it has 14 cores(phyical) for 2

@Mateo What theme? Can I use that theme in Ubuntu too?
And How?

Phew... That are more cores than I have complete machines in my basement. And I have quite a lot (very old) ones...
* getting jealous... :P *

My next workstation should be a server :P

Can I undo an "offensive" flag? Not longer needed after the edit of the title... (link to Q)

6:47 PM
@ByteCommander Nope. However, it's fine - that flag was legit at the time of flagging.

This was a clean install of Win10 before I started a few minutes ago.

Would be a good feature to undo flags (only once possible per flag) like with downvotes, won't it?

Man, Visual Studio comes with a lot of bloat.
All I wanted was the compiler toolchain...

Wowzerz

express always does
my ultimate processor wislist

6:57 PM
Is my comment ok? Q is about 2d game development on Ubuntu... Looks like a bloody beginner without any experience at all that things games like finalfantasy are written within a few weeks... (?)

Q: What are some good RPG creation programs for Ubuntu 14.04?

Adam FeltI'm looking to create a 2D RPG similar to Final Fantasy 5 and 6, but I don't know what my options are. Please list instructions as well if possible, as I am a novice with Ubuntu.

too chatty

yes

hmm...
Better than just VTC as Off-topic!

no migrate it
special attention>Migrate to gamedev

7:00 PM
What's the first rule of migrations?
Because that question breaks it.

if it is crap trash it
there isnt that many

That is why I asked him to reword it. I think what I suggested should be more on-topic, isn't it?

Seths closeure reason seems to fit

Sry, but I have no access to close vote queues. Or where have you seen it?

go back to the page or refresh it
?
why cant he just sudo rm -r
5
A: Delete non-empty folder without permission

ByteCommanderYou can't... If, as I assume, you have a restricted account without the privileges to run sudo and access the folders as root. As far as I know, there should (and it would be a serious security issue if not) be NO chance to get ownership of another user's data except for root users. So you have ...

7:17 PM
@Virusboy It is an University computer, so he is not an admin but a restricted user! Why are you digging that old things out?

because I do that
as for your suggestion there is gamedev.stackexchange.com
merely point himto the right area that isnt an OT vote

@Virusboy permissions. he doesn't own it either as user or as group he can't rm it.

it skirts the line

reported

7:21 PM
but its not OT

@Virusboy Did you read my comment on the 2d game-dev Q at all? I wrote that!

i saw it
@KasiyA I wouldnt consider it OT its specific to Ubuntu. and those programs arn't easiler found.

ha it got removed
and from tje looks of it a mod CVd it too @KasiyA

Thanks @Rinzwind

dupped

7:23 PM
there it was seth!
who had any doubt >:D
By the way: fan control is done by the kernel nowadays if I remember correctly

@Rinzwind im going to try out KaOS
Kernel since Precise if im right

@Virusboy dont! it's KDE.

but i want KDE

noob!

7:25 PM
Unity 8 for the win!

but but but, it looks so much prettier than cinnamon

15.04 is such a boring release already _O-
No crashes yet

thats good

@Virusboy you made a typo! it is "pettier" >:-D

@Virusboy: @Mateo says it's a themed KDE. chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/20269403#20269403

7:26 PM
i know @KasiyA I saw the transcript

7:34 PM
@RPiAwesomeness WHAT were you searching for when you got that? ;D

Evening!
Anyone that upgraded to 15.04?

heya @IonicăBizău
I am on 15.04; but fresh install

What are the changes/differences?

working better than any other Ubuntu when at the same point
@IonicăBizău minor. Very very boring release >:)

is it better than trusty

7:38 PM
@Virusboy Define better. :-)
Maybe I will upgrade tomorrow or so...

umm idk overall?

@IonicăBizău build architecture is now C.UTF-8.
mir + unity 8

should I upgrade @Rinzwind
from trusty?

@Virusboy depends. 1. what do you use the machine for? I use it to watch videos and web. Notthing important so I can live with some bugs

Are there any visible changes? I mean some design improvements etc?

7:41 PM
does it work with Wine?
and gaming

@IonicăBizău system monitor got a search box

better yet just link the bug list

@Rinzwind I use top. :-)

lol me too
GTK Header Bar is now themed to Ubuntu. so 3rd party software looks more like Ubuntu

@Rinzwind Since when was mir + unity 8 "minor" and "boring"? :P
What's the status of systemd?

7:44 PM
@Seth "boring release" as in NO crashes

Why the guys talk so much about Ubuntu Mate when they talk about this release?

@Seth ehm I have not checked but it should be thwre
@IonicăBizău it is a new official release!!!
I am calling it mUbuntu.
mooooooooooooooooBuntu. The OS for those that like to mooooooooooooo

....
oh its not 15.04
I thought it was

cowsay comes pre-installed and can not be removed :=D

@Rinzwind You can put apt-get moo into your .bashrc so everytime you start bash you will get an cow mooing... :-)
@Rinzwind You wrote it faster than me. :p

Uh-oh... I don't have enough space on /home to export this VM.
I wish VirtualBox would let me specify another directory.

Why did they use a cow? What about penguins or unicorns?

@Seth now tell me :=P how can I see if upstart is gone and systemd is active :P

@ByteCommander Or pigs... because... bacon!

7:49 PM
@NathanOsman it does?!

@Rinzwind Does it?

I have my vboxes in /discworld/vbox/

I never got that option.
@Rinzwind Oh you store them somewhere else.

so it should :X I sure hope so

7:49 PM
I need them stored on my SSD which doesn't have a lot of room.

My Snowtocat is gone, but now I have a real 3D #Octocat Figurine! Thanks, @GitHubSecurity! 😄 #GitHubBounty #tshirt http://t.co/uA7MQ4bYSy

Q: Convenient way to check if system is using systemd or sysvinit in BASH?

edvinas.meI am defining common bash files which I want to use across different distributions. I need a way to check if system is using systemd or sysvinit (/etc/init.d/). I need this so I run appropriate command to start the service. What would be safe way to check for this? I currently check for existance...

Q: Extracting numbers with a decimal point from ls output in Bash

VesnogI would like to extract the numeric part of the file names that begin with "hsli" and end with ".h5" in Bash on Ubuntu 14.04.1 64-bit LTS. My ls -l hsli* output is as follows: -rwxrwxrwx 1 ongun ongun 31392 Feb 26 13:04 hsli0.03.h5 -rwxrwxrwx 1 ongun ongun 31392 Feb 26 13:44 hsli0.042.h5 -rwxrwx...

8:01 PM
bbl :-)

@KasiyA who knows, but you can easily install themes on KDE, they even have a place in the desktop to get them from online, that and the icon and window theme are probably seperate... So can't say it all is any one theme...

how is KaOS?

8:25 PM
I just use Ubuntu.

Task 1/2 complete. I have Visual Studio 2013 Express up and running.
Now I need to compile Qt for x86 and x64.
And before I can do that, I need to carefully select the correct command-line flags for building it.

@NathanOsman HWE broke MESA

it's a Dock for 14.04 amd64
now released.
I developed it, please look and give me reviews.

8:52 PM
it has a MAC flair to it

I'll try it.

@xiaodongjie yay, cool. I'll give it a go.

@ByteCommander I was just surfing Lego's channel.
@xiaodongjie Hey, why not :)

I can't find the command to start it.

^ This
@xiaodongjie What do we use to start your app?

9:06 PM
Ah, here we go: /opt/ubuntu-dock/bin/ubuntu_dock

Well.
@xiaodongjie First impressions... it looks quite nice - but it's a bit small until you hover over it and then it becomes quite large.

^--- this

Maybe you should make it larger by default and shrink the inflation size.

Yeah, that would be a bit better.

Alternatively, let the user choose how they want it (eg. a first-launch wizard thingy)
When the icons are that small there is a bit of a pixelation around the edges of the icons

9:09 PM
is there an auto start ability?

@Virusboy You'd have to manually do AFAIK

Hang on, I gotta restart my VM.
Then I'll post a screenshot.

It also lacks an easy to use command/launcher icon and there isn't any config file or man pages.

Makes a mental note not to ever enable 3D acceleration in an Ubuntu VM again...

@NathanOsman Yeeaaah
That tends to cause problems

9:13 PM
You can say that again.

makes mental note to avoid VMs
what is the command to intiilize?

@Virusboy @xiaodongjie's dock?

yes

/opt/ubuntu-dock/bin/ubuntu_dock

how do I add stuff?

9:16 PM
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The only way I've been able to do that is launch stuff, right-click the icon, and click "lock to dock".

ty

@xiaodongjie Bug of sorts - if you drag an icon behind the dock, the dock/mouse lags like heck

The icons are pixelated sometimes.

9:20 PM
@NathanOsman I noticed that myself
Are those icons SVGs? Maybe they can't scale that big...

I'd also love to see the source code, but the repository on SF is empty.
And for the record, the dock in OS X Yosemite no longer magnifies items when you mouse over them.

I always turn of magnification

Ubuntu MATE Is Now An Official Ubuntu Flavor Ubuntu MATE 14.04 LTS and 14.10 will, remain “unofficial” releases despite the approval, with the former of these releases supported until 2019. ubuntu-mate.org/blog/ubuntu-mate-vivid-beta1

good now go update the wiki
@Rinzwind

Probably not till 15.04 is released

9:35 PM
Not yet
@Virusboy the official one is 15.04 = Ubuntu +1
But it is another weird situation until 2019 :P
Why not make 14.04 and 14.10 official?

because they already have .2 updates pushed

so? Ubuntu Mate is just plain Ubuntu with a desktop (they did not change core Ubuntu stuff so the validation process would be easier).
To me all the extra bugs would be related to just the desktop?

so Mate is Ubuntu - Unity

damn Feyenoord - AS Roma is weeeeeeeeeeeeird
@Virusboy no it is Ubuntu + Mate desktop :=)

Unity included?

9:45 PM
nope good old gnome

hmmm i will have to get that then

even good old gnome 2 See -> mate-desktop.org/gallery/1.8

I saw that today on a dutch news site :) @Seth "we won". for now ;)

@Rinzwind Personally I am highly skeptical.
I don't like cable companies, but something just doesn't feel right about this whole thing...

9:50 PM
It is America. The company wiilling to spend the most money will win.
And 5 to 7 years later Europe follows

@Rinzwind This, sadly, is an all too true rule out here.

so who paid the 3 to have the FCC regulate?

EXACTLY! --^

In my country though one of the political parties that is expected to win the next elections made a proposition to legalize the growing of weed.

about time

9:54 PM
@Virusboy microsoft, apple and google.

@Rinzwind It goes downhill from there.

odd play for both apple and Google

@Virusboy nope. google does not want their content restricted. They would have to pay for YouTube videos to be streamed to customers
same goes for apple: they would need to pay to have a premium rate for iTunes

Yeah, I can totally understand Apple and Google's position here.
Microsoft distributes an incomprehensible amount of traffic in the way of updates, patches, etc. So I can even see their position.

oh seems Netflix was against it too (obviously the same reason). Verizon and Comcast in favore

9:57 PM
hmm What about Cox?
nvm they werent liking it either

Q: Upgrading XScreenSaver

Of course, one tends to believe in things that help one gain in some material way, but I definitely think the tech company philosophy is just different. Company policy is dictated to some degree by company culture, and there are a lot of idealists at those companies (even Microsoft :) )

11:03 PM
I love it how I take the time to write out two long comments detailing what info I need and how to get it and please edit it into your question and then the OP responds, in a comment, with half the info I asked for.
2

let's call that the Seth principle

LOL!

Seth principle: "OP will respond back with (half the info requested) / (info given in your comment/answer)"
3

Unfortunately it is an all too common occurrence :(

that's why it's a principle

11:12 PM
Yes, I suppose that is true lol ;)
Well I've got a test to take. Be back in a jiffy!

your comments will live on in the Internet
helping someone out eventually
huh, the test is short eh
more like a quiz then :)

@Chan-HoSuh That would be a more accurate term, yes.
@Chan-HoSuh That is what keeps me motivated :)
