Q: Why isn't my usb ubuntu boot working on my Asus k53e laptop

Caleb RichterI currently have windows7 and want to be able to dual boot on my laptop. I followed the directions given to make a dual boot flash drive and it worked on my desktop computer, but when I try to use it with my laptop (asus k53e) it says boot error. I have my flash drive set as the top priority bios...

Any ideas? I'm afraid I can't do much more :(

Getting some sleep now... Bye RPi... and whoever else is awake in here :) o/

Now that I think about it ... Vivaldi is very similar to project Spartan ....
They say it's hearkening back to the early days of Opera ... is Project Spartan copying off the original Opera? o_O

I commented ;p

Oli
9:27 AM
@JourneymanGeek I don't even see much value in separating home unless you're going to put it on more reliable hardware (eg RAID0 for / and RAID1 for /home) - it's not like homes are compatible between distributions (different distributions means app versions, config conflicts, database mangling and data loss)

@Oli: If you want to reinstall the same OS, it makes things slightly faster
I do it on my test machine.

Oli
Yeah that's probably true

(I don't do that on normal installs. Hell, I'd prefer swap files over a swap partition)

Oli
Amen

I put my documents on a diff. harddisk. That's all. And only because I have a distinct different label during partitioning

9:30 AM
Oh, I have data disks
But those move between systems

:)

(If I for some reason had to build a system over multiple drives and didn't want to use LVM or BTRFS. that's a different story)

@Toroidal Were you the one that asked for multiple clipboards and wanted to program one?
I found something that might interest you and allow you to accomplish this with just a simple script instead of struggling with C++ or Java:

A: Memory location of clipboard

Norman LiUnfortunately, I don't know the answer to the first question (If someone knows, please edit this answer!). I do know the answer to the second. You will need to install a utility called xclip. Install xclip sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install xclip To view the clipboard: xclip -o -sel p...

When you wrote a working script then, please let me know if you would share it with me... :-)

user136984
@ByteCommander Yes, I will have a look at the link now... I haven't managed to come up with a working script yet though. :)

12:25 PM
@Toroidal Yea, but I think with that xclip tool it should just be possible to write a (bash/python/...) script that gets content from the clipboard, stores it in a buffer or file and can put it back to the actual clipboard later. You would just need two more keyboard shortcuts (one to save current clipdoard content, one to open a popup displaying the saved contents and letting you chose one to restore to clipboard - I don't think you can just overwrite Ctrl+C/X/V, can you?)

user136984
@ByteCommander Yes. I think that if you go deep enough into the system you should be able to overwrite those shortcuts. But you probably wouldn't want to go too deep into the system for this utility.

Code signing... argh!
So many factors to weigh... such ridiculous verification requirements.
Some companies request a recent phone bill. I don't have a home phone. All I have is a mobile phone. And they don't send me paper bills :P
Nor do I pay for utilities, though I suppose I could give them a copy of a recent bank statement if that counts.

Who wants a phone bill for what???

Companies that issue code-signing certificates.
And they want it to verify my identity.

(Maybe. Still not sure if it's a requirement.)

And what advantages do you get from that signing?

8:50 PM
Code-signing for...what? Windows? What is the purpose of that signing?

anybody knows a .p7m viewer for Ubuntu? It's an encryption format often used for mail attachments. I can only find Windows and OSX tools...

What does the Ign mean in the output of sudo apt-get update?
Ign archive.getdeb.net utopic-getdeb/apps Translation-en
Ign archive.getdeb.net utopic-getdeb/apps Translation-de
Are those repositories ignored?

@InkBlend @NathanOsman is working on nitroashare, its really a cool program.

@Mateo Cool! I've heard of NitroShare before, but I didn't know that it was being actively developed by someone on Ask Ubuntu.
That is neat!

What means Hit and what means Ign is the question... askubuntu.com/a/294532/367990 does not really answer it.

Oh, that's just a translation looks like.

It is run in English with LANG=C

Do you have German installed as a language pack in Ubuntu?

Yep, my standard language...
It is OK and Ign there.

10:50 PM
Then this looks like the answer :)
9
A: How do Ign and Hit affect apt-get update?

Alan CurryFrom what I can see in the apt source code, "Ign" means there was an error retrieving the file, but the error is being ignored. When I run apt-get update, I see 3 Ign messages, all of which are for Translation-en files. A packet dump shows that the requests for those files got HTTP 404 responses....

reading...

On language settings in Mint 17, it says I have Chinese support fully installed. But I'm damned if I can get it to actually let me input text in Chinese, in, say, Firefox
Or in a form etc.
I have a little Chinese flag on my console, but that doesn't help in any way.
Hello? Faheem? derobert? Anyone?
Last line from a different chatroom, sorry. Thought I did modify the copied stuff, in case anyone feels insulted

I was gonna say ;)

Though!!!! though I did...

Are you sure you have your input method set to Chinese?

10:56 PM
I assumed the Chinese flag on the dash meant I did

I have Spanish and English input enabled on my machine and switch between them by pressing Super+Space

Super? Mac?

@Seth So Hit means I already have the up-to-date list file, and Ign means that it could not get that list file from the server (e.g. 404 error), but it is not seen as a fatal error because only the translations are missing and the packages are available in their default language at least. Correct?
LANG=C sudo apt-get update | grep getdeb
Hit archive.getdeb.net utopic-getdeb InRelease
Hit archive.getdeb.net utopic-getdeb/apps i386 Packages
Ign archive.getdeb.net utopic-getdeb/apps Translation-en
Ign archive.getdeb.net utopic-getdeb/apps Translation-de

@user2356315 I'm not familiar with Mint, so what you mean by "flag on the dash" is rather beyond me ;)
@ByteCommander That is correct.
See the two hits?
That's what you needed to install the application.

A Cinese flag icon on the bottom menu bar

10:57 PM
So I got the first two lists, but could not download the translations...
Okay. Thank you!

I don't think it is quite that complicated. Everything should work fine.
@user2356315 Maybe you could take a screenshot?

When I click on the flag icon, I get the standard text entry speech bubble-menu type thing, with an English flag underneath, its box unchecked...sec

But should I do something because of those Ign errors? I have quite a lot of them!
LANG=C sudo apt-get update | grep Ign

@user2356315 Do you really want to allow different layouts for different windows?
That could be your problem right there.
Click "show keyboard layout" when you have Chinese enabled. What does it show you?
@ByteCommander You've got some weird stuff in your sources.list. Did you upgrade from a DVD?

11:03 PM
Nope
What sort of weird?

I wouldn't worry about it, but if you want ask a question on the main site and provide full apt-get update output as well as the grepped output and someone more familiar with it should be able to figure out what is going on there.

@Seth No, I think those cdrom entries match my installation CD.

@user2356315 That was directed at ByteCommander (see the @ByteCommander on the front of the message?)
What did you mean by "nope"?

Click "show keyboard layout" when you have Chinese enabled. What does it show you?
@user2356315 Did you try that --^?

11:05 PM
@Seth An english keyboard

@ByteCommander Well it definitely has something to do with an installation CD, yes ;)
well that's not right

So I thought

I'm not familiar with Mint so I can't help you much more then, sorry :/

@Seth Okay, so I could safely remove the CD with the System settings panel... But why do I have that many non-existing online repos in my list...

What does "show character table" reveal?

11:07 PM
I think I will ask a Q now about that...

@ByteCommander I'm not sure. I feel like grep left some info out. Can you paste an entire apt-get update output?
@ByteCommander Sounds good!
@user2356315 Well that wasn't very helpful.. :/

Sure, one moment, it's just running through... :D
LANG=C sudo apt-get update

@Seth, nope, all a bit odd, maybe my kernel's got some issues

Wow, just found an amazing coffee:

11:11 PM
WTF is that? Coffee with grass?
I bet the one who drew that smoked the coffee instead of drinking it! ;D

@ByteCommander hm, not very revealing. Why don't you ask that question then?

Coffee like this stuff:
Absinthe (/ˈæbsɪnθ/ or /ˈæbsænθ/; French: [apsɛ̃t]) is historically described as a distilled, highly alcoholic (45–74% ABV / 90–148 U.S. proof) beverage. It is an anise-flavoured spirit derived from botanicals, including the flowers and leaves of Artemisia absinthium ("grand wormwood"), together with green anise, sweet fennel, and other medicinal and culinary herbs. Absinthe traditionally has a natural green colour but may also be colourless. It is commonly referred to in historical literature as "la fée verte" (the green fairy). Although it is sometimes mistakenly referred to as a liqueur, absinthe...

@Seth Okay... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@Mateo And why "coffee" then? °_°"??

Don't know... But it was less expensive and because... Coffee?!
Anyway, that covergance video on unity touch is quite awesome.

Might be because I drink neither coffee nor alcohol, but I somehow don't get what you want to tell me...

11:18 PM
Probably... @hbdgaf might get it more

a friend wanted to play a prank on me and get me drunk

@Seth That is good stuff too, they make non-alcohol coffee versions as well

Reminded me of that for some reason.

@ThomasW. ^^^

@Mateo Just don't get the two mixed up :P

11:26 PM
So just watch the movie "Moulin Rouge!" and right about when the moon starts singing along to the music...

11:43 PM
@Seth My Q is posted about the Ign errors. If you are interested:

Q: "apt-get update" gives many [Ign] errors - is that a problem?

ByteCommanderI just ran sudo apt-get update once again and I thought that there are many lines starting with Ign instead of Hit in the output. I wondered what it means and researched on AskUbuntu and SuperUser, but they had contradictory answers. After discussing with @Seth in chat and some logical thinking,...

@ByteCommander Add the contents of your /etc/apt/sources.list and any files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d
That way we can see if you have loads of extra ones.

@terdon Added to the Q!
Or do I have to add the contents of every file in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ ? There are so many... :P :(
I just added the ls output by now.
And @Seth: Why did you edit "AskUbuntu" to "Ask Ubuntu" and "SuperUser" to "Super User"?

@ByteCommander Wow, yes there are! You've been tinkering :)

11:59 PM
Well, I just added 7 repos...
