<-- is back

I'm not totally sure about my logic/knowledge of how Ubuntu & Python interact.
I'm also looking for more sources.

hm... wasn’t there a problem with setting a bash alias like that?

Good scripts specify the interpreter in the shebang line.

I thought we saw a question in chat that did that

12:17 AM
#!/usr/bin/env python2
...for example.

@NathanOsman So, if you call just python on a Python 3 script with the correct Python 3 shebang, it will be executed using the correct Python 3 interpreter?

Of course, that won't prevent someone from doing python3 somepy2file.py but...
@RPiAwesomeness If it's executable and has a valid shebang, you don't need to invoke the Python interpreter on the command line - it's done by the shell.

@NathanOsman Oh! I did not know that!
Awesome!

In fact, that's how scripting works. Bash will open the file, read the first line, and use the interpreter specified there to interpret the script.
#!/usr/bin/make -f
...is just as valid as...

python3

#!/usr/bin/perl

that, and it will make the python2 stuff break...

^ was my first thought

Yeah, a lot of stuff will break.
There's actually a better way to solve the problem.

But won't it just affect the specific user with that specific .bash_aliases files only when they themselves specifically call python within BASH/Terminal?

virtualenv.

12:23 AM
@RPiAwesomeness but then every-time you try to help someone with that setup typing "python" will not work as expected

@Mateo Yes. That is true. But ignoring that fact (let's hope the OP knows better and can recognize when he's using a different version of Python) wouldn't my statement be true?

@RPiAwesomeness That's true.

meh, if he knows he will just type python3...

I know :P Dang lazy people can't type a 3

This is one of those cases of "ignore the user's actual question and find out what they're trying to do and answer that."
Making aliases, although it will do what they want, is almost always a bad idea.
I'm positive there's a better way to do whatever it is they want.

12:27 AM
I'm updating my answer now.

anyway, I forget simple stuff all the time
then go "OHHHHHHHHHHHH, NOOOOOOOOOO, It's Not Working!?!?!"

I've left him a comment.

then remember it was something I deleted or changed...
huh, did anyone notice this new firefox feature:

@Mateo Ooo. Dat's fancy

it assimilates search boxes ;)

12:34 AM
If you visit 2buntu.com, you should see that too.
It's called OpenSearch, IIRC.

@NathanOsman if you can get past nginx

Nginx?

Though, I'd rather just Google my question and tack on site:askubuntu.com. SE's search is really quite bad :P.

Wut...

12:35 AM
@Mateo lol

currently what i see when going to 2buntu.com

@Mateo That only happens when the HTTP host header is missing.
It's working fine from here...
Anyone else having trouble pulling it up?

@NathanOsman I think I know why he wants to change the default Python version so that pip installs modules correctly. At least, that's what it sounds like from his comment on my answer.

Ima quickly check the logs.

I asked him to clarify that.

12:36 AM
@RPiAwesomeness Then the answer is virtualenv.
That's by far the best way to go.

lets try chrome

@NathanOsman Or use python3-pip.
@Mateo You get that when you go to 2buntu.com?

yep

Does Chrome work?

huh
nope

12:38 AM
@Mateo Sounds like it's an issue on your end. I'm fine.

I've got the access logs open now.
I'm going to figure out what's going on here...
THAT IS BIZARRE.

i just did a dist-upgrade and restart, so...

I'm bringing up the exact same page as Mateo and it's giving me a 200.

maybe the certs it removed?

And I see a 404 in the logs for that page.

12:39 AM
I'm on 14.04 and no problem.

Wait a sec.
@Mateo: are you accessing over IPv6?

not sure, whatever is default here

@NathanOsman: You're a mod. How is it generally seen if I would add a banner for a new site on StackExchange to all of my answers on another site? (see my comment here)

lets see...

According to the log, your IPv6 address is showing up.

12:40 AM
@NathanOsman Wait. You can access 2buntu's logs?

he is the administrator

@RPiAwesomeness I'm the person who runs the server.

@Fabby VERY badly

Oh. :D
That explains it :)

And also the person who designed most of the website :P

12:41 AM
In fact? double grumpycat NO!!!.

@Fabby Bad bad bad.

A couple other users here have access.

@Fabby Don't do it.

@Fabby Prolly not a good idea... :P

yeah ifconfig listed inet6 addresses

12:42 AM
OK
Got it! :)

Downloading Vivaldi - gonna give it a go.

@Mateo Interesting. I never tested it over IPv6 even though we technically support it, so that might explain why it isn't working.
@Mateo can you try visiting quickmediasolutions.com in Chrome?
I'm going to see what happens when you try that page...

firefox worked

Yup, HTTP 200 from here.

chrome worked

12:44 AM
So it must be a misconfiguration on 2buntu's end.

Tsk tsk. A tech site that can't handle IPv6.

I wonder why it's going that. We're not even using SSL.

IPv6 is quite complicated though.

@RPiAwesomeness Technically, we can.
We just don't have any way to test it :P

How so?

12:44 AM
None of us (that I know of) have IPv6 access.
Originally our server was in a SF datacenter with only IPv4 access, but we moved to NY and enabled it.
So, I guess more testing is needed.

@NathanOsman: eh. Tunneling isn't too hard, though I've not done it on linux yet

Yeah, might be worth trying that if the site isn't working for some people.

is debating giving all his linux boxen AAAA records ;p

I wonder if I can tunnel over SSH through a server with IPv6 access.
@JourneymanGeek Oh we've got AAAA records for the domain. That part works :P

@NathanOsman: Oh, I mean home systems

@Mateo The funny thing is... we're running Nginx on both my website and 2buntu.

so I can install a tunnel broker on my netbook (prolly free6) and just connect to say greekgoddess.jmgsparedomain.tld

Interesting thing for me - my second most upvoted answer is was actually merged with another question before getting half of those votes.

oh, so probably not that bit that is going wrong? all is see is welcome to ngninx on 2buntu

12:48 AM
I found that rather intriguing.

That sounds almost like you've bound to an ip address
and forgot to set up the ipv6 one

Q: Facebook Scraped URL 404 and welcome to Nginx error [Ningx + PHP-FPM]

VishnuSimply my problem is: When I share my site url on Facebook it shows a "404 Not Found" title or "Welcome to Ningx" Title. I am new to Ningx, I am using Debain Linux (Ningx + PHP-FPM) Config. All sites hosted on this server having a problem wile Scrape Information by Facebook (Open Graph) https:/...

We're listening for IPv6 connections:
root@ny1:~# netstat -nlp | grep nginx
tcp        0      0 0.0.0.0:80              0.0.0.0:*               LISTEN      16263/nginx
tcp6       0      0 :::80                   :::*                    LISTEN      16263/nginx
...but then the problem doesn't seem to be with accepting the connections anyway.

hm
that website seems to work for me.

I'll restart again, brb

12:50 AM
Okay.
@Mateo: when you get back, I checked over the logs again. Turns out that for some reason, when you accessed quickmediasolutions.com, you were using an IPv4 address.
Yeah, even Facebook is trying (and failing) to access us over IPv6 :(
I'm finding some strange things in our access logs...
37.48.74.44 - - [25/Feb/2015:19:54:04 -0500] "GET /feed/ HTTP/1.1" 404 2231 "-" "RSSOwl/2.2.1.201312301316 (X11; U; en)"
37.48.74.44 - - [25/Feb/2015:19:54:05 -0500] "GET /feed/ HTTP/1.1" 301 193 "-" "RSSOwl/2.2.1.201312301316 (X11; U; en)"
I wonder why one received a 404 and the other received a 301.

got in this time, had to change this:
auto, dhcp only

Yup, this time I see a successful request.

strange...

Both 2buntu.com and www.2buntu.com show me an nginx page too....

Interesting... I just realized I don't have IPv6 setup for my mail server.
@Fabby Wut.
Hang on... BingBot just stopped by... log is scrolling pretty quick...

1:00 AM

What about just 2buntu.com (no www)?

samesame
and the 404 and 301 is because of RSSowl trying HTTP protocol first and something else after...
need my IP?

If you don't mind, that would be great.
It will help me filter the logs at least.
Oh wait. You're using IPv4?

(At my mum's place...)
Yup
At home I have both.
here only IPV4
apparently not!

I can't find that IP address in the logs.
Oh yeah, I see that one.

1:08 AM
mmh... too late to delete the other one...

I deleted it for you.

anything else you need? (just did a traceroute)
thanks.

I think that's good.
I'll try to figure it out from here.
Thanks.

off to sleep then!
'night

Night.
It's fun to watch my server download an ISO from Microsoft at 30 MB/s.
2015-02-25 20:18:59 (22.3 MB/s) - ‘vs2013.4_dskexp_ENU.iso’ saved [7000401920/7000401920]
Nice average :P

1:31 AM
Wow, time flies.
@NathanOsman 30 M*B*/s? Nice!

Hey, it's a server in a datacenter in SF.
I'm not ever going to see that in my house :P

1:45 AM
Yay! I just hit 2.5k reps!
Half way to my goal for the year!

Congrats!

Maybe I should revise that goal to be a bit more ambitious ...
Also. We seriously need a good mobile version for chat. Or an app.
Cause accessing chat on mobile is sucky

Removing the language packs from the MSVC ISO reduced the size by 1.3 GB.

O.O
@Seth Thanks! And right back at you for your success at being a mod! 😀
I should write a mobile version of chat and submit it to SE...
All sorts of project ideas!

@RPiAwesomeness Thank you :)

@Seth Sadly, only working touch mobile device in this house is an iPad Mini :(

Ah, well then..
Why do you need a mobile chat app :P
Main chat should work find on an iPad mini, I'd think.
I use the full chat on a 7 inch android tablet occasionally.

The Windows Mobile VHD is 1.7 GB.
O_o

It works, but it's really bad

Down to 4.3 GB now.

Does anyone here have python3-pip installed? And if so, what command do you use to run it?
I'm downloading it now, but I need the command for helping a user out :P
He's is literally just reposting the link to the software in question and not helping at all.

Dangit Internet :P
What has been your problem all of today?
Dropping connections, worse-than-normal speeds, weird wget errors and failed Firefox downloads.
Seriously. My friends are going to get tired of me complaining about you!

I can't remote into my 'spare' vps

Then you actually have to try each of those out :P

Oh yeah. Eh. Never mind :)

2:39 AM
On the other hand.
Oh dear.
I have found yet another place where I wish to waste money.

<--- trying to install Visual Studio 2013 in Wine.

@NathanOsman Have fun :D

@RPiAwesomeness: for certain values of waste ;p

2:41 AM
ARGH! shirt.woot.com how can you be so awful to me?
Okay. Enough Woot shirt links.

@NathanOsman Not-a-gonna work.

@Seth Yeah, I've come to that conclusion :(
Though with Wine 1.7.34 I can get the installer to launch.

3:21 AM
Just popped in here to say Hello from Vivaldi!

I'm downloading each package in the Visual Studio ISO one-by-one as they are needed by the installer. Not fun.
260 MB downloaded so far...

3:47 AM
@RPiAwesomeness Neat browser, isn't it?
@NathanOsman You'll be up all night ;)

But when I'm done... I'll have all the files to install Visual Studio on any machine without needing to download anything.
I can install it in VMs, on my actual Windows installations, etc.
I'll never need to do this again. For a long time.
