I think you should change the question to a more generic and drop the demand for "less"
something like: can I redirect to a file what is shown on screen when I see it on the screen (and not what was not seen yet) or in such type of wording.

The Visual Studio Express 2013 for Windows Desktop ISO is over 6 GB.

I wonder if I can use a VPS to download the ISO, rip out what I don't need, compress the rest to an .xz and download it...

I bet I could get it down to 1 or 2 GB.

Q: backup program in Ubuntu?

Some Unix/Linux books suggest using dump and restore for backup and restore with incremental backup method. But on my Ubuntu 12.04, I don't have them by default. Did they go out of business? What programs are recommended for backup a file system instead? Thanks.
