12:00 AM
@NathanOsman No, I did not!
/me looks
xD
"Very large and unreliable ... " explosion

:)
Your review was much better, but don't tell George.
He's a bit sensitive.

12:23 AM
What?

What, what?

What's this conversation?

...wat

George's latest review.
It's out.

ok, flattened the whole thing and reinstalled everything
back to the same prompt
but with better resolution for some odd reason
@Terrance don't have parted command

12:27 AM
@NathanOsman Wow, and he didn't even give you a mention in the credits for pushing the SD card in for him! xD

Lol.
I hadn't thought of that.

also, wow: The raspi 2 is much better in that respect. No giant SD card sticking out.

"George's latest review?"

huh

12:28 AM
Yeah, the 2 is much nicer in a few areas.

I do have mount

@SomeKittens please start from the (new) beginning.

> unable to read superblock
ah, finally something makes sense
@Seth installed 14.04.03 LTS, boots to prompt with (initramfs) prompt

but you can't mount the filesystem?

yeah, superblock

12:32 AM
Do you have smartctl?

didn't think so.

gotta run, will be back on later tonight.

I suggest you boot a liveCD and run a SMART check on the disk.
@SomeKittens ok, catch you later!

Wut - how come Chrome has a GPU process when I disabled GPU accelerated canvas rendering...?

12:35 AM
@NathanOsman Because Chrome wants so much RAM it's now creating sudo (see what I did there?) processes as an excuse to get more :P

Heh - it could be that I have smooth scrolling enabled.
I'll disable it and see if that helps.

sup @NathanOsman

@hbdgaf not much - how's the game coming?
I saw a UE4 screenshot a while back.

I have a simple save quit screen, drag and drop for stack setup, and the server logic done. Not sure if I should finish the client side logic bricks and try to compile that json plugin or finish the flask server part of it.
I'm thinking finish the client side of it. That way, if it doesn't crap out the data I expect, I can build the server around the plugin.
@NathanOsman Thoughts?

Yeah, that's what I would suggest.
Though in practice, when I'm doing client / server stuff, I often tend to jump back and forth between the two so much I get dizzy :P

12:42 AM
Well, I mean... it's json. And I already wrote a game loop. How hard can it be? don't answer that.

Lol.

sometimes I don't get how this website works
the newest questions page will say one question w/ new activity, so I'll refresh and nothing shows up

Seriously though, it's a repetetive json post/reply. So, multi-game server will take some work, but two player is nearly there.

@NathanOsman ;) Will do

making me assume that it's just a comment or answer
then I'll go into a question and back out and suddenly there will be a new question

12:47 AM
@Zacharee1 cacheing i would suspect

@hbdgaf maybe
Chrome has been having problems with cookies and the like lately

oh my chromium is SOO broken, but it's fine. i think i found where mine is getting its ass whipped. when i try to search history evidently there's unicode in a title bar or something that is defeating it.
suffice it to say, history search is broken.

For those wondering about which video @NathanOsman was talking about earlier being better than George's, it's my Raspberry Pi 2 unboxing/review video

1:02 AM
o/ @jrg

Man. The difference in audio clarity this new mic has given me is crazy

Just met my classmate from high school at a pho restaurant. Like what are the odds

@Serg wow

Kinda a fail on Google's part, they've removed support for Adobe/Macromedia Flash, but it's required for adding annotations & stuff on Youtube >.>

It's a trap. I had a HS classmate show up at my job a while back.

1:06 AM
@RPiAwesomeness that's a lol

Macromedia though? Don't call it that. It's been Adobe for 10 years

@hbdgaf how's that a trap ? Im surely not about to be kidnapped by vietnamese mafia am i ?

@Zacharee1 Ah. Shows how much I care :P

@Serg Probably not. It's just too unlikely for me to say "Hey, this should be my comfort zone"

1:08 AM
user image

@RPiAwesomeness lol

I still dont get why they removed support for linux version of flash. Like , what ,it's too expensive or something ?

@Serg no one was buying it, duh
:}

@Serg You should be glad! It's a piece of junk (at least in terms of security) anyways & people really should be moving to HTML5 & WebGL

@RPiAwesomeness TRUE DAT

Buying how ?isn't flash free for Windows to dow load and install ?

1:10 AM
@Serg :P
@Serg you have an interesting typing style currently

@RPiAwesomeness i can deal with html 5 now. But once it came out it was a cpu hoag
@Zacharee1 im on mobile. Its hard to type on a small a$$ screen

@Serg You're excused :p
I'm using that too much, aren't I?

jrg
HI @hbdgaf

@Serg they charge system makers, and charge to make the content with the pro versions - we just take it for granted because they gave out the runtime to hook people in

jrg
somebody was pinging me?

1:13 AM
I pinged you to say hi because I saw you enter. There is no urgent need here.

@jrg @hbdgaf except to chat it out

jrg
Somebody pinged me earlier today, but I can't find it.

@Mateo oh...that makes sense.... kinda

@jrg Probably nothing to worry about

jrg
Yeah, probably.

jrg
lol

?
When did SE start out?

It began as Stack Overflow in 2009.
They later expanded to Server Fault and Super User.

I just started college in falls 09

...and then the Stack Exchange network was born.
Originally it began as a paid option but then they opened up Area51 and the rest is history.

1:18 AM
Stack Overflow came before Stack Exchange? What was it the overflow for?

SO was so awesome that now there's an SE for everything that has enough users. Did I abbreviate too much? I think that explains it.

I probably go broke if i eat pho every day

@Serg you seem addicted
@hbdgaf got the abbreviations, but why was it called Stack Overflow?

Yes sir i am. I uses to work at one pho place and eat it every day

and what's the shortname for server fault?
@Serg I don't blame you. It looks good
@Serg I'll have to find a Vietnamese restaurant

1:25 AM
that's pretty great. going to save it as a joke for later

I just wanna say , whoever created SO and proposed AU is awesome.

@Serg definitely
I'm glad I found this place
It's very organized and people seem to know what they're doing
high moderation, so no annoying ads for Brother Printer hotlines...

jrg
It's nice to see new people come in.

Ironic
There was spam for brother printers earlier today

jrg
1:29 AM
as a mid-4 digit user ID holder, it's nice to see people talk about what we've build together as "organized" and "high moderation, so no annoying spam"

Mid 4 digits here too. So, yes. It is nice to hear.

jrg
> 4 years, 11 months
wow.

@Serg That's why I said that

jrg
that's a long time ago.

yes it is @jrg

jrg
1:30 AM
I don't remember what I was doing 5 hours ago, let alone 4.11 years ago

@jrg more like 4.92 years

Im just a bit more that a year here. Still long way to go

I was talking about --> askubuntu.com/users 5768 <-- that

jrg

A: Optimizing Boot-up

jrgFrom what I'm seeing I think that you might be going as fast as you can. About the only thing I could think of doing would be to make a custom kernel specifically for your hardware, but I don't know how much of a speed boost that would give you.

i apparently was writing silly answers about boot speeds that didn't help anyone.

@jrg story of my AU life

1:32 AM
Wait - are we talking digits for Ask Ubuntu?
I'm a one-digit user :)

Bring the thunder.

And now we know why we love you.

I still remember when the site launched. I was at my keyboard pressing F5 repeatedly until the registration page came up and I quickly grabbed a really low user ID.
...and asked the very first question.

@NathanOsman Nice

1:34 AM
@NathanOsman made history yo

I jumped in mid game and just didn't lose much ground.

And here's when chat launched:
Sep 29 '10 at 17:20, by George Edison
Is this the new place to hang out?
(Don't be confused by the name, that's still me :P)

Not sure I would have been able to forgive you for using Thomas Edison. George Edison is okay though.

Yeah.

I started under my Chinese name Xieerqi

1:42 AM
I've seen lots of people come and go here on chat over the years.
Looking back over the transcript reminds me of just how long ago that was.

@Serg That's interesting. Why the switch to a more Russian sounding name?

@hbdgaf it's my real name. I figured if i wanna put my au profile on a resume, i should actually make it official and professional and stuff

Yeah, this so isn't going on a resume.
@Serg I'm not always as nice as I could be, but that is definitely a good reason for the switch.

Q: Boot stuck at "Assuming drive cache: write through"

user2649681I've just built a PC and have tried to install Ubuntu on it. After booting from my HD, I'm presented with a menu with "Ubuntu", "Advanced Options", etc.. So I select Ubuntu, and it starts to boot, but the following few lines appear on the screen, followed by a flashing "_", and nothing more happe...

Time to go home
@hbdgaf not that i have that much to show on my resume, but at least au is some real world troubleshooting experience

1:51 AM
@NathanOsman I thought it was '08.
@NathanOsman I haven't been here as long as you and I feel the same way looking them over :(
Am I the only one that misses some of those days?
It makes me sad to think of it sometimes..

@Seth Oh, you're right.
I got mixed up there. I joined in 2009.
It was already about a year old at that point.

Then how did you get 5?

Oh, I was referring to Stack Overflow.
Ask Ubuntu didn't launch until 2010.

wow this was... something else.
I can't tell if it took my last faith in humanity or gave it back.
although it also makes me wonder how legit these "social experiments" are.

2:11 AM
Some of them are odd, but there's a deck stack in that one. On the homeless drug addict side, they used an already had tips cup. So, it's subliminally saying "someone already gave this money" where if you look - in the father one it's empty from the gate. The first dollar is the hardest I think.

@hbdgaf oh that's probably true, I noticed that but I didn't really notice it, if you know what I mean. Good point.

Yeah, had a guy at one point just say "Here's twenty for your tip cup. Don't ever spend it. Just put it in whatever cup you're using" relating to open source projects not highway begging.

2:55 AM
@SomeKittens I just got your message, sorry for a late response. You can use either parted -l /dev/sda or fdisk -l /dev/sda from a terminal window on the LiveUSB.

Q: How can I create a virtual network interface thru Private Internet Access VPN?

ScottI have a PIA account and it works fine on my windows machines and my android devices. I have a VPS (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS) where I want to create a secondary interface thru PIA VPN service. I downloaded their Linux software and installed it via command line. Got no errors. Checked the support pages ...

Q: How to combine several shared objects into single .so file in gcc?

venkat28vkI have few shared object files(.so) and i need to combine them into one .so file. How can i achieve this in gcc?

@NathanOsman Your video intro noise reminds me of Myst.

That's me on my guitar :P

And cheesy graphics are cheesy.
Either way. It does sound like something from the Myst intro.

Q: Execute a shell script in current shell with sudo permission

sharFor executing a shell script in current shell, we need to use a period . or a source command. But why does it not work with a sudo permission? This was not very helpful, but it's the same problem I think?

Oli
@Ravan If you want to delete your profile, you have to go via the contact link at the bottom of the pages on the main site.

@A.B. sorry,...did I have to add something?
