Please no

@Mateo good - though in putting together some stuff for the website, I ended up on a bit of a side-trail writing a mail client for the website. That's pretty much done now, so I'll be back on the website again soon. Probably this week.

\o You mean "\o Please no" @RPiAwesomeness

👋

I can't quite read that.

it's like a little waving emoji hand

sweet, just did a hosts file ad block on my ubuntu phone! ;) \o/ \0/

@Mateo ooo, fun

now to put it back in read only mode, and will be good till next ota ;p

How is Ubuntu Touch?
Is it Android-like or completely different?

it's quite diffrent
a few similarities
big things are scopes and gesture based usage

1:32 AM
I wish I could get it

swipe from right is how you manage tasks, swipe to close an app
quick swipe switches between two apps, longer reveals that
left you can pin programs, and get to them fast

ahhhhh
gimme

or get back to your main scope with a long swipe :)
from the bottom is app specific, browser it brings up the open tabs
top is all the notifications and settings - just aim and pull down to a specific one

:(

why sad face?

1:37 AM
Because I can't get it
Yay VZW Note 4...

money wise?

No. I have the Note 4. I just didn't know Ubuntu Touch was so great, especially compared to STUPID 5.0.1 ON NOTE 4s
Verizon has no plans, as far as I can tell, to release 5.1.1, which fixes the battery and lag problems that come with 5.0.1

there is still some things to work out on it, but getting better and better
scope management is a bit strange right now for one
hmm, what is a useful site with some side ads
I've forgotten what they look like in firefox ;P
hmm, seems like it was a success, not seeing most of the ads on my ubuntu phone \o/
and back to read only :) mission success

A: Consequences of using apt-get in ubuntu touch

evergreenTo be able to use "apt-get" in ubuntu-touch, for safety I suggest you use the function "Enabling/ Disabling read-write mode". Once enabled the "read-write mode", this will disable Ubuntu system upgrades. Howerver you can restore automatic over-the-air updates by disabling the "read-write mode"....

1:54 AM
@jokerdino happy birthday, been a while!

2:12 AM
Am I a bad person for using iMovie for George's next video?

yes ;p

But it does color-keying sooooo much better than Kdenlive.
I mean, it's nowhere near as flexible but the quality is much better.

2:29 AM
I know, there aren't any really great video editors for Linux that I am aware of :/
A relative of mine uses Cinelerra and gets good results though.
ooh, looks like they've updated the UI too cinelerra.org/2015/index.php/2014-11-19-00-57-12/cinelerra
might give it a shot.
apparently Warner Bros and Sony use it.
their website was just redone, still really needs some work lol
heh, I can still remember my ICQ user ID all these years later.
wow wine is big

4 hours later…
6:27 AM
^ Why is spam almost always tagged PHP...?

Morning =)

UGT morning.
Sweet. Clean build of UE4 done. Start quit logic done. Now it's the stacks building stuff. Still on the list are move submissions to server side, and handling responses for gameplay. After that, it seems like it's pretty much done.

Good morning!

Why do I think face from a-team getting punched in the mouth when I hear you say that?
@Mateo - UE4 certainly does know how to take resources on the build and design steps, but during the run step it's pretty light. So, maybe that's a bug by design? If you can play it in the editor, then without the editor - it'll run on the same hardware in a totally bitchin' fashion?
probably not the why, but it would be genius if it were.

7:10 AM
Good morning :)

hg8
Hello!
Hi @cl-netbox =)

Good Morning @hg8 - how are you - did you have a nice weekend ? :)
Good morning @A.B. - how are you today ? :)

hg8
@cl-netbox great thanks. And you ?

@hg8 - everything alright so far ! :)

7:36 AM
@cl-netbox I'm feeling better. but I stay a few days at home.

@A.B. good to hear that my friend ! :)
@A.B. congrats for bounty ! :)

@A.B. I stayed away from home for a few days!
>:)

7:55 AM
@cl-netbox only 25 points. OP hasn't accepted the answer.
@Fabby welcome back :)

@A.B. better 25 than 0 ... =)

hg8
@cl-netbox Congratulation on your 3k =)

@hg8 thank you - did you read my latest answers and the Q+A thing ? :)

hg8
@cl-netbox not yet, will do ;)
@cl-netbox nice one. +1

@hg8 thank you ! - for which of them ? :)

@hg8 ah okay - I thought you meant the boot problem ones ... :)

8:22 AM
> Thank you for reviewing 40 late answers today; come back in 15 hours to continue reviewing.
Get up, people! We still have 1649 review items left!
Only 6 people did 184 LA-reviews in total today... :-/

@ByteCommander I did some reviews already but some of them were rejected ... even when I was right ...

@cl-netbox What do you mean by rejected?
(Good morning first of all! :D)

@ByteCommander Good Morning to you as well :)

hg8
Good morning @ByteCommander

8:28 AM
@ByteCommander they were peer reviewed and when I corrected grammar and spelling and readability my review sometimes was rejected because of not having "changed important things".
@ByteCommander That makes no sense to me, so I gave up on reviewing that much, because if you do it really good it takes time !

@cl-netbox Well, that's editing. I actually referred to reviewing the late answer queue. But with >2k, your edits are applied immediately without getting reviewed.
And to be honest, I also often disagree with some edit reviews to be declined as too minor. But as we both don't need reviews on our edits any more... ;)

@ByteCommander I did this as well - but was confronted with "test answer" - means I reviewed and after DONE - I got told this was a ... answer ... and ... you passed the test ... (or something like this.
@ByteCommander ... that happened 2 or 3 times now ... so that as well makes no sense to - I did not join AU to "get back to school" ... =)

@cl-netbox The system throws old and already reviewed items into the queues once in a while to test whether users pay attention or just hit buttons. That's normal. I get them too. However, the more you review and the more tests you pass, the less they will show up for you, because then the system considers you a trustworthy reviewer.

@ByteCommander Generally I take this explanation to thank you for helping me learning more about "the system" ! Thank you for this kind support ! I really appreciate it ! :)

No problem! :)

8:42 AM
@ByteCommander ... curious : in which city do you live in BW ?

@cl-netbox He's young: he's very privacy-minded...

^^ Indeed! >:)

@cl-netbox I've asked him in tox and even there he only accidentally let it slip one day after months of conversations...
2 votes left...

@Fabby really ? Do you think I will visit him and shut him down ? =)

I have 3 votes...

8:44 AM
@cl-netbox You? No, I don't think so, but Bytecommander himself?

@ByteCommander are you afraid of me ?

mmmh... Yes, I think he thinks you might want to shut him down!

@ByteCommander what does it mean ?

@cl-netbox Not of you... but you're not the only guy in the big interwebs...

He's not afraid: he's very careful...

8:45 AM
^^ that.

@cl-netbox it means he has 3 upvotes (or downvotes left)
OK, backto job hunting!

@cl-netbox You have a maximum amount of votes per day, which is 20. After that, you can't cast up/downvotes any more until tomorrow.

When I get tired of that I'll do some queue reviewing...

hg8
20 ? 40 no ?

@ByteCommander so what about giving them to me then ? :D

8:48 AM
@hg8 Oh, right.

@ByteCommander Another thing I learned from you today - thanks ! :)

My mistake... It's 40.
And you get a badge once you use 40 votes in a day for the first time.
@cl-netbox If you give me a link and I like what I'll see - sure.

@ByteCommander- Q+A both from me -> askubuntu.com/questions/680825/…
@ByteCommander and this one (support session throuout the evening) -> askubuntu.com/questions/681148/dual-booting-win10-ubuntu-15-04/…

Out of votes now.

@ByteCommander -THANK YOU ! :)

8:55 AM
@cl-netbox The answer is ok (+1), but as Pilot6 (I think?) said, you should probably elaborate the options a bit more by adding more detailed step-by-step guides. maybe using screenshots.

@ByteCommander I will think about it - but maybe answer gets too long then - what about tox - would you like to give me your ID and me to giving mine to you ?

We can do that. Wait, I'll paste it in a few seconds. (self-destructive!)
@cl-netbox Have it?
Self-destruction in 5... 4... 3 2 1 BOOM!
;)
You don't need to.
Just send me a request/contact offer.
That's enough.
I think it might even make complications if there are pending contact offers from both sides... not sure.

@Rinzwind I know I've already asked this about 3 times or so... What is "_O-" supposed to represent again? It still looks like a duck to me...

left and right are arms. middle is head. he is slamming his right hand down as when you do laughing
"that's a good one" would be the corresponding phrase I guess

@Rinzwind seen my comment ? =) ... never happened to me so far ... =)
@Rinzwind - did it shock you to death ? =)

where?
oh I see it :D

@Rinzwind - congrats - +1 from me for that ! =)

Hi @Ravan \o

@A.B I have live USB,...is it possible to create iso from usb?

sure, why not

any link in AU please =)

Q: Can I make a LiveUSB from a LiveUSB?

Paranoid PandaI often upgrade to a new release of Ubuntu, think I could have got some malware and then have to use my LiveUSB to install a fresh install, however the LiveUSB is using an old version, so I was wondering if it possible to boot from a LiveUSB in order to download an Ubuntu ISO and then use the Sta...

11:23 AM
@A.B. afraid not =)

11:37 AM
@Ravan why not? "dd" the usb to another usb

Hello @Ravan ! :)

@Rinzwind hello,
@cl-netbox =)
19 mins ago, by Ravan
@A.B I have live USB,...is it possible to create iso from usb?
@Rinzwind refer here

@Ravan did you know that you can install ubuntu from iso file without having to burn a CD or writing it to USB ?

@cl-netbox I don't know how, but once you said about that..=)
1
Q: How to create ubuntu .iso from live USB?

RavanI have Ubuntu 14.04 live USB (32 GB). Is it possible to create .iso from live usb ?Also, how can I copy content of live usb to a folder so that I can again create a live usb.Is there any software for this purpose?

@Ravan ... most easiest way ... =)

11:41 AM
@cl-netbox But unfortunately I deleted my iso

@Ravan do you want to know how ?
@Ravan then redownload it :) or wait for October 22 when wily will be released... :)

thats why I am asking =)....my usb 32 GB became dumb!...
@cl-netbox yes please =)
@cl-netbox haha redownload?....yes! I will wait...I am waiting for Ubuntu gnome next LTS =)

@Ravan it is a dupe but there is not a single upvoted answer. ISOLINUX (Mitch's answer) may be the way to go but I never tried.

@cl-netbox will you please give exact commands for me here :)

gksudo gedit /etc/grub.d/40_custom

menuentry "ubuntu" {
set isofile="/ … /ubuntu-***.iso"
loopback loop (hd*,**)$isofile
linux (loop)/casper/vmlinuz.efi boot=casper iso-scan/filename=$isofile
initrd (loop)/casper/initrd.lz
}

Note : ( * = disk | ** = partition | *** = version )

sudo update-grub

reboot and select entry from GRUB menu - proceed as usual - that's it - cheers ! =)

11:47 AM
@Takkat thanks =)
@cl-netbox mail please..:)

@Ravan these are the exact commands !

@cl-netbox =)..yes..but I need to use those note points,,and additional substitution..=)

@Ravan what mail ? - I am waiting for yours ?

@cl-netbox it's that easy to chainload isos now? who knew. thanks.

@cl-netbox ho...ok...just now I re installed Ubuntu...
I will send :)

11:50 AM
@hbdgaf I do it since a long time and with other isos as well - only grub custom edit is different than with ubuntu ... :)

@terdon thanks =)

@cl-netbox iirc, the problem last time i tried was the iso not grub. glad to know it works for ubuntu main though.

@Ravan note points : depends on the very special install which is different on every machine

@cl-netbox one minute =)

@hbdgaf GRUB is the best and most flexible boot loader I know - I start Clonezilla and GParted isos from there as well ... :)

11:54 AM
I know GRUB is the best, but when I wanted to do it... it was for a SAN distro, and that didn't work.

@hbdgaf @Ravan - in case you have Windows as well - drop that BCD loader and use GRUB instead ! =)
@Ravan and don't forget : you have to reconfigure BCD store all the time when main things change - so better forget about this topic when you don't know exactly what to do (as I told you with EasyBCD thing before) ... =)
@hbdgaf what is iirc ?

@cl-netbox here

@Ravan thanks

12:34 PM
@Ravan here
^_^

@A.B I will refer ..=) thnks..

@Ravan You're welcome. But please read the updated answer, @ByteCommander made a good point and I edited it.

@terdon Imagine an upvote, please. I don't have any left due to my late-answer-queue bashing this morning... :p

12:51 PM
:)
@Rinzwind I didn't get your comment about 2 drives and one dd. What do you mean?

dd if-/dev/sdb1 of=/dev/sdc1
would copy a live usb to another live usb :)

@Rinzwind Oh, right. That would still make an image as large as the input disk irrespective of how much used space there actually is though, right?
So if you have a 16G pendrive with 100M used, the iso will be 16G.

Q: Cron not keeping to specified time

JasTonAChairMy issue is, I'm running crontab on Ubuntu 14.04, on DigitalOcean's VPS service. I've made a web scraper to do a job every two hours. However, cron disregards the times I've set and follows the minute instruction. Here is my cron line 30 8,10,12,14,16 * * * /usr/bin/python /path/to/myscript.py...

@ByteCommander good enough? askubuntu.com/questions/681730/…
@terdon yes D: I did not claim it was smart/better/whatever though :D

Hey, does anyone know the English term for when an inkjet printer cleans its print head?

12:59 PM
@Rinzwind OK, just curious.
@ByteCommander Cleaning?

No google results with that... :p

By the way @ByteCommander sudo su is pointless on a system that has a modern sudo. Just use sudo -i. See here for details:
43
Q: Is there ever a good reason to run sudo su?

terdonTo launch a root shell on machines where the root account is disabled, you can run one of: sudo -i : run an interactive login shell (reads /root/.bashrc and /root/.profile) sudo -s : run a non-login interactive shell (reads /root/.bashrc) In the Ubuntu world, I very often see sudo su suggeste...

@ByteCommander it is "cleaning print head"
@terdon yeah wel I have more than Ubuntu to do >:-D

@Rinzwind Where else is it needed? Why not use su directly?

@terdon hmm you got me there. No idea :D
removed it :D
@ByteCommander I demand an upvote from you for making me work so hard on this :+

1:05 PM
16 mins ago, by Byte Commander
@terdon Imagine an upvote, please. I don't have any left due to my late-answer-queue bashing this morning... :p
@Rinzwind I am sorry, but ^ applies to you as well... :-/

@ByteCommander tsk. I demand one from you. I did not specify on what day >:D

Then remember me tomorrow...
But before I feel bored enough to dig into the LA queue! ;)

1.5k Late Answers aaaaaaaahhhh
But better than 4k

1:22 PM
@terdon just saw edited answer =)
@terdon you used cp to copy files to disk, but after ,Is it possible to create live usb without creating .iso?

@Ravan Hmm. Not sure actually. @Rinzwind?

@terdon that is my second point in question =)

It might be enough to copy the files and set the partition to be bootable but I've never tried it.

:)

@Ravan probably not if you want it to be bootable too.
or do alterations after creating it :P

1:34 PM
No
> I am starting to reuse an old computer (windows xp era) which I converted to Ubuntu 10.04 several years ago.

1:49 PM
@Rinzwind Why? Can't you set the partition to be bootable and then change whatever you like? If I've created a bootable live USB, I can mount it and modify it and it will still work AFAIK.

I have had more failures doing it that way. But could be me of course :D
I always tend to "dd" an "iso" (quick and dirty)

It may also need a bootloader to boot... Grub but never tried myself.
dd will of course also write Grub from the source.

OK... Seems like you edited that.

He @Fabby o/

@Ravan yes... As long as you have a boot sector to copy.
A disk is bootable. a partition can be marked as bootable and can be unmarked.

1:58 PM

@Fabby Hang on, that would mean that if you just copy the iso and set the partition to be bootable, it still won't work unless you also fiddle with the MBR, right?

@terdon yes, that's what I said.

Being marked as bootable does not mean it can boot... it also needs a bootloader.

if you have a grub or windows mbr, they can both do that.
@Takkat yes, obviously.
MBR is only 512 bytes and just points to where to continue...
GPT is larger.

mkisofs -R -b boot/grub/stage2_eltorito -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -o grub.iso iso <-- from Grub Manual^^

2:02 PM
@terdon true

Genisoimage also supports El Torito but I never did it, so I don't know how to.
can't test this because here at work it is a hostile environment where our IT people decided to ditch Firefox and install IE11 everywhere.

Crap. @Ravan that means my answer is wrong. You will always need to use a dedicated tool (or copy an MBR over) to make a live USB.

@Takkat tsk even we dumped ie11 >:D

@Rinzwind as said - hostile... I bet they can better spy on us from IE.

If so they saw that ^^

2:07 PM
Has anyone ever seen a machine that does no boot, shows no video, but CPU/Mainboard fans are blowing strongly and pulsating (stronger and weaker in about 1 second cycles), synchronous with all keyboard LEDs flashing? No video output on internal connector. Power supply fan first blows, then turns off after 5-10 seconds.
Ideas? ^

ouch - CPU failure? Short circuit on the board?
Short of dying it appears.

@ByteCommander any beeps?

fried system \o/
Check for "beeps"!
@Fabby hey go somewhere else posting comments :=D

@ByteCommander Yes, Satan, has taken over your machine. You need to get some holy water, and 'bless' the motherboard with the holy water. If that doesn't fix the machine, then apply some more 'holy' water onto the motherboard.

@Fabby No sound. But the beeper seems to be located on a PCI card that provides two more PCI slots...

2:09 PM
PSU fan blowing then turning off (for heat presumably) is not such a good symptom.

That is the new behaviour after temporarily removing the CMOS battery.

@ByteCommander that is stupid?! the system beep should be the 1st thing to get power :X

@ByteCommander no, there are 2 pins on the motherboard to hook up a speaker...

@Chan-HoSuh Hi there!

Before that, the machine would turn on and off in the same interval, but with an audible relay clicking noise from the PS.

2:10 PM
@Rinzwind because I beat you to the beeps?
:P

@Fabby Then I guess I have to have a closer look for them...

good moment to start browsing for a new pooter :D

@ByteCommander PSU may also be at the end of its days. They are not immortal.

@ByteCommander that's a hardware issue. Take everything out and boot. If that gets to the BIOS screen, start putting things back one by one and trying to boot until you find the fried component.
If it doesn't work to begin with, your fried component is probably the motherboard.

Oh, and if I connect the green power-on cable of the PS to ground to turn on the PS while it's entirely disconnected from the mainboard, it can power a single old HDD without problems, i.e. it spins up.
@Takkat Does ^ still allow a failing PSU?

2:13 PM
maybe yes - but who knows... they should not produce clicking noises.

It might be that it creates enough voltage, but breaks down on load. I measured all wires with a voltmeter. Everything seems okay, 12V gives 11.2, 5V gives 4.8, 3.3V gives 3.2 - everything in a tolerable range.
@Takkat The clicking was only before resetting the CMOS battery. After that (now) I have the cycling CPU fan noise.

In case a compnent, as Terdon said is broken, it may act as a short circuit.

So I will try and turn it on without everything unpluggable.

Is this a laptop?
I guess not since you mentioned the PSU.
Then yeah, just remove everything you can. Including the RAM.

@terdon With the speed of him answering on taking out components, I would guess 95% certainty: no!

2:15 PM
you could also re-reset the CMOS battery - watch the poles.

Is it safe to remove the fans as well? It has two fans at each end of an air channel around the CPU, which has a big cooling grid on it.
@Takkat Did that several times. As well as booting without CMOS battery.

@ByteCommander No need to. And no, not really safe anyway. Though 99.9% PCs around today have safeguards and will just shut down if they overheat, why risk it?

@ByteCommander as long as you don't turn it on, it's safe to remove the fans
(to let's say reach another component)

@ByteCommander It is safe for a short time on an open case, but leave the CPU-Fan on!

Oh, and did I already say that this stuff starts as soon as it's connected to the power? I don't touch the power switch on the front, I just plug it into the wall.

2:16 PM
@ByteCommander before turning it back on: re-install them!)

Sure.

@ByteCommander Is this a machine you built yourself and, if so, has it ever worked?

It's one my aunt had worked with in her office. Then it broke.
If I can repair it, I'll get it.

It the aunt's fault then.

I'm going to test it again then, taking everything apart...
Will update you afterwards.
BBL

2:18 PM
You'll get if you can't repair it too :P

@Takkat But then I can only take the HDD out and trash the rest... :P

@Takkat Clearly a bug then. Aunt -> ant -> bug :)

lol

@terdon :D

Ants in a box may cause issues beyond imagination.
Some years ago moth's larvae were feeding on my Windows box. Never has this issue after I switched to Ubuntu.

Q: Use case for qemu-static for same architecture

Daniel AlderI just discovered that the 64bit amd version of the Ubuntu package qemu-user-static contains the binary /usr/bin/qemu-x86_64-static. Normally, qemu-user-static is used for emulating another architecture, so I try to find a reason why they build and deploy an amd64 on amd64 emulator. The dd time...

2:53 PM
@Fabby o/

@Takkat I saw it happen at a client. Took 3 years and 5 machines before the realized those black little thingies on the bottom of the casing where fried ants (that attempted to walk over the mobo). Solution was a but of herbs that ants do not like
