Bug-fixing the green way ;)

@blade19899 Thanks. Won't work to create a bootable disk though. You still need to use a dedicated tool as Fabby and Rinz pointed out above.

Q: Unable to mount secondary HDD on CentOS 6.7 (Must specify file system?)

enthusiasticgeekI have a secondary HDD that worked fine in Ubuntu 13.04. I had mounted in to /media/user/<some UUID>/. I could read and write files without problem. My Ubuntu installation was on a primary SSD. I was forced to install CentOS 6.7 due to my new company policy. Now when I try to mount the drive I h...

Q: Don't send ICMP redirects, firewall filter packets first

OxwiviI'm trying to do this, but as @wurtel commented, I suspect the rules are bypassed by ICMP redirects. Is there any way to disable sending ICMP redirects?

All the dev teams seem very busy at the moment, probably due to the upcoming release of 15.10, how soon after its release will most things quieten down again?

well that's interesting. i get a REALLY long weekend this weekend. the roads are impassable for a day, and it's still raining, so that means at least two days.
there's no wind though, so i could get to work in a canoe.

happens.
you have any thoughts on an alternate theme for the card game? i'm at a point where i'm having to use traditional playing card graphics.

user136984
What is this?

user136984

Have you googled it @ParanoidPanda?
@hbdgaf I'm terrible at design stuff..

user136984
4:07 PM
No, I mean the picture just suddenly popped up on my browser... :D

user136984
And I googled that and got nothing! :D

um

@Seth I'm just terrible. Doesn't stop me from trying.

whatever

user136984
Strange... But then my computer and I are strange! :P

4:12 PM
@hbdgaf well I'll let you know if I think of anything, but don't hold your breath ;)

Fair enough.

user136984
Is it just me, or does it feel like this answer isn't very good?

user136984
I mean, firstly it gives a long explanation about how to do what I said I already knew from the question linked, and then it finally says that I just can't do it.

user136984
I really hate answers worded in this way that just want to explain how to do what the answerer thinks is 'better', no matter what I actually asked!

user136984
And I understand that I may have to take "no" for an answer, but this guy just doesn't put it very well.

VTC this as off-topic.

user136984
@NathanOsman: Do you know anything about the Ubuntu creation process schedule?

user136984
Because I'm wondering, what they do between the Final Freeze and the Final Release?

user136984
Eat pizza? :D

5:10 PM
Also, why does this page say:?

user136984

somebody has changed my display name

user136984
@Frenzy: Well, I would suggest that you first change your password, and then alert a moderator so that they can tell you if there was any odd activity on your account (like someone else logging in). And they can also change your name back to whatever it was.

user136984
Oh yeah, what was it?

I think some political people have stolen my privacy

user136984
Well, I am sure that if you ping one of the moderators they will be able to handle your issue.

user136984
Someone like @Seth or @terdon.

You called?
@Frenzy is this in your chat user's profile or your Ask Ubuntu user?

no

@ParanoidPanda Hrm... not sure about final freeze - somewhere in there they need to build all of the packages.

5:22 PM
No?
@Frenzy which account are we talking about?

@Oli my account
@Oli unethical logins are going on with my account

So you mean your Ask Ubuntu account (askubuntu.com/users/424011/frenzy), not your chat user account (chat.stackexchange.com/users/153575/frenzy), right?
First of all, change your password. What do you use to connect? Is it an SE username or something like Google?

@Frenzy What do you currently use to log in to your account? An SE openID or facebook or google or something else?

stack exchange
I think My sim and all internet activities are monitored by some law agency or may ne at a cheap local political level

user136984
@NathanOsman: Unless EXTREMELY intensive pizza eating counts! ;P

user136984
@A.B. @Fabby: Do either of you know anything about this by the way? :)

@Frenzy Doesn't look like anyone has been in your account. If you're worried about it though change your password. Really though, who would want to change your display name?

I myself was planning to change my display name but it changed itself today by someone and I don't care if somebody do logins in to my account I don't ve anything to loose.:)

5:34 PM
Then you shouldn't have anything to worry about here then ;)

ya was just curious what suddenly has happened

you probably changed it and forgot :)
it happens.

you know suddenly while watching TV i tends to get hints like some company has set up some plant somewhere in India

@Fabby @terdon @Takkat @Rinzwind I'm back from fiddling around with my strangely behaving mainboard/PSU...
But no success. I removed RAM and all available cards, but no change.

5:39 PM
Ouch.

And there is indeed no built-in speaker and no pins to connect one.
Just the one on the PCI hub card.

@terdon Are you from UAE

Probing the PSU output voltage while connected to the mainboard was interesting though.

My guess is that the chipset itself is fried but talk to someone who knows more about hardware than I. Fabby, hbdgaf and JourneymanGeek come to mind.
@Frenzy No.

5:41 PM
Sometimes it tends to alternate between 0V and whatever it's supposed to be (probably, my multimeter was too slow to capture exactly), and sometimes it stays around the expected value, +- maybe 0.5V
I guess I'll ask a question on Super User before finally throwing that box away...
But, there is a special power connector in this machine I've never seen before and never heard of or can find on the web.
It's not listed here.
It has 8 small pins (about 0.6mm big and square-shaped) in a row, but only 4 are connected.
white/pink/-/red/-/-/-/black
Any ideas what this is?

See if you can get @JourneymanGeek's attention. He knows his hardware.

The connector from the PSU is labelled P4 and the pin array on the board is probably named CTRL.
None of my other PSUs has that plug.
^ is the PSU, but one can't really identify that special connector on the image.

+12V DC pin in all new motherboards

@Frenzy I don't think that's a plain 12V connector.
Did you mean that^ ?

yes

5:52 PM
It's not the one I'm referring.

ok
which one?

8 pins in a single row.
And small pins, like the one for jumpers. Not big ones like in the 12V connector above.

ya that 8 pin 12V rail

Do you have a picture of what you mean?

are you talking about USB 3.0 connector cable

5:54 PM
No...
It has 8 pins, but only 4 are connected with wires. There's a white, a pink, a red and a black one.

its not a SATA power cable is it^^?

it is SATA i think

@Takkat No. Only 8 pins. and 4 wires.

it is - I was wondering if that is the cable @ByteCommander referred to.

I can't find any image on the web... :p

6:02 PM

yes

that's all an ATX board nees.
anything else may be a custom plug.

It is SATA @Takkat reffering to

user136984
The first thing I saw when I came in was lots of cables! Are you guys having a cable party or something? :D

yes

6:03 PM
@Takkat None of them.

yes we are cableing

It's a LiteOn PS-5241-6F power supply unit.

Whats the use of floppy drive connector in modern PSU's

For a Fujitsu-Siemens W26361 mainboard
It looks like the rightmost connector in that photo, which you can't see very well... :p
Directly on the right of the 20pin.
Red/pink/black/white cable.
Here it's the second connector from the right on the bottom.
(@Takkat @Frenzy)
^ second connector from the top.
If I use a different PSU without that connector, the computer behaves still in the same way.

@ByteCommander that's much in favor of a mobo issue.

6:11 PM
^ here it's the topmost connector with "P6" written on it.
(or P4, one can't really read it...)
@Takkat You think there's any chance of finding at fixing it? I see no blown up capacitors or burned areas on the circuit board...

user136984
@ByteCommander: By the way I asked the question you suggested would be a more interesting one. :)

why is my google unresponsive on searching "hp liteon power supply"???

@ParanoidPanda As I've said before to many others today: Imagine an upvote... I don't have any left.
@Takkat hp? It's a Fujitsu.
Or do they buy mobos from hp? o.O

but the PSU is liteon... isn't it?

user136984
@ByteCommander: :D Well, I can remind you tomorrow! :P

6:15 PM
Yes. It's a Lite-On PS-5241-6F according to its label.

@ByteCommander looks like an old CD-drive power connector...
And I MEAN old: 20 years?
How old is this thing?

Defintely less than 20 years.

is has a SATA connector... :)

It has a Pentium 4, SATA, ...
But I don't know the date, as it's from my aunt.

but they may have added stuff for old machines for compatibility.

6:20 PM
But it's connected to the mobo, directly next to the 20pin main connector.
Maybe I should open it up again and take a photo...

But if that box is broken with another PSU it may not be the PSU you are looking for...

@Takkat That's what I'm figuring

@ByteCommander Just asking: you can't enter BIOS either?

Except if that special connector has a required purpose. because I have nothing with a similar connector to test...
@Takkat Nothing. No display, no beeps, nothing.

@ByteCommander If you change the PSU, change the MoBo as well...

6:21 PM
Just pulsating fans and keyboard lights at about 1-2Hz.
@Fabby I have no other mobo.
Especially none that would fit in the case.

i.e. remove any dedicated GPU, plug a monitor into the on-board VGA connector, and press DEL F12 or whatever on booting.

There is only the onboard chip.
I already removed every pluggable device except the fans and including all RAM bricks.
It did not bother.

To test the power supply, you need to cross the Green wire from the motherboard plug to one of the black wires to simulate a button push, but you will need like a hard drive hooked up for load so the power supply will stay on.

@ByteCommander Can you post a pic of the real thing?

@ByteCommander you need RAM for the BIOS to boot.

6:24 PM
@Fabby Have to go down into the basement, open it up again and get the cam out...
If I do, I'll do it after dinner.
@Terrance Already did that. The test HDD spins on.
@Takkat It is exactly the same behaviour with and without the RAM bricks.

OK.

I guess it breaks already long before it even thinks of needing RAM.

@ByteCommander OK, power supply sounds fine then. I guess I am late to the troubleshooting party. :)

Maybe a short circuit anywhere that leads to the pulsating?
(anywhere on mobo then, because everything pluggable is disconnected)

Metal under the mobo. Stand offs not tall enough. Bent case under mobo. These are things I have seen before causing that.

6:29 PM
@Terrance I have taken the mobo out already and seen no "hill" in the case below it. but I did not test it outside of the case.
Be right back...

@Fabby notice removed askubuntu.com/q/679781/295286

@Serg Mine to you too! No close votes left? (I voted)

@Fabby I haven't been voting on anything today yet

@Fabby there's a user on this question in the comments complaining that the question belongs on U&L site, while it's still about bash, so it's relevant here. I kind of don't have any better argument than the meta's link :/

@Fabby it's actually pretty hard to find, so not dumb :P (I do appreciate the motive though)
I assume you found it then?

@Seth Yup and subscribed!

@ParanoidPanda seriously, do people never google?

@Fabby Made the photos.
Now uploading.
What do you want to see first?

A different room?
So it doesn't spoil all chats here?
Or a link to a single page?

Well, ok. Let's take my garage again.

Q: How to make Key Images in questions?

David ColeI've been trying to answer questions but I want to add The little keys in there, and I don't know how. How do I do it?

You about @Fabby ?

@hbdgaf yup

What's up? I'm playing with UE4 a little, and it being Windows geared as a build toolchain is stressing me out a little, but I'll get passed it.

I'm out of the country in some hotel on a really slow WiFi,

I bet you are :) At least the pay is good right?

7:34 PM
(reading up on UE4, while doing some industrial archaeology )
@hbdgaf nah! Job interview...
(unpaid)

I think a thing has reached its top point when a sellable product can be made by mashing together the right sets of tutorials. I think UnrealEngine is almost there.

But it's Windows-oriented...

I can't blame it for being a little behind there. It's free, open source, and builds. That's a damn sight farther ahead than a lot of things.

@hbdgaf I can see it supports Ubuntu 15.04...
(in the HW / SW requirements)

I have it running on 14.04. So, I wasn't bitching. They get a high five from me. Sometimes it's obvious another OS is the primary target though.

7:39 PM
Yeah, what would you do if you were a corporation?
target the big market out there!

You're probably right.

I'm already impressed they do support Linux
>:-)

Me too. As noted with the aforementioned high five.

:D
Meh... not good enough.

waits for Fabby to get his fixed fonts right
Anyway, just needed to complain a little after yesterday. Today is good. Just trying to figure out building an engine plugin on the linux side of the house, and there are no tutorials for that... It's one of those "Just DO IT" sort of things.

7:44 PM
@Fabby Back from the basement, I did the "industrial archaeology" research you asked for! ;)

Q: HCI Dump not acquiring data packets in Ubuntu 14.04?

SpatelI am trying to communicate between two bluetooth modules in two different Ubuntu 14.04 VMs. While the data is transmitted and received perfectly, the Hcidump is not able to acquire that data. 8:11 PM
Goodnight all o/

@A.B. Good night here too!

So uh, wow: system76.com/…

ok that's cheesy.
I didn't know Intel had 6th gen stuff coming out though.

8:27 PM
How can I use 'locate' to search for a file recursively in a specific directory?
I've googled the hell out of it, but google isn't parsing "locate" as a ubuntu command

@AmagicalFishy You can't.
That's what find is for.

Oh. That's... unexpected. No wonder my search was futile, haha. Thanks @terdon

locate searches through a database, it doesn't look in a specific path.

Would having a path-like property in the database significantly increase search time?
like "return files whose name contains [blah] with path property [path]"

@AmagicalFishy If you know the path, use find.

8:34 PM
@terdon I know; I have, already (ty). :D Do you know the answer to the database-path-property question?

Yes, locate can take something like /etc/*foo and return /etc/bar/foo but find is simpler usually.
Basically, it searches for a string in its database. If you give it a full path, it will look for that.

Oh. I meant moreso in 'locate's database

@AmagicalFishy Yes, me too :)

We're talking similar to a MySQL database, right?
Oh, haha

Hmm. Dunno how it's implemented internally. Either an actual database or just a binary file containing the data in indexed form.
For example:
$ locate /etc/apache2/apache2.conf
/etc/apache2/apache2.conf
/home/terdon/backup/daily/etc/apache2/apache2.conf
/home/terdon/backup/daily/etc/apache2/apache2.conf.backup
/home/terdon/backup/daily/etc/apache2/apache2.conf.old
/home/terdon/backup/daily/etc/apache2/apache2.conf~
/mnt/movies/2013_sys_backup/etc/apache2/apache2.conf
/nfs_shares/lacoloc/backup/daily/etc/apache2/apache2.conf
/nfs_shares/lacoloc/backup/daily/etc/apache2/apache2.conf.backup
/nfs_shares/lacoloc/backup/daily/etc/apache2/apache2.conf.old
It finds anything whose full path contains /etc/apache2/apache2.conf
On my machine, that matches various things.
You can also give it more specific instructions using regexes.

8:37 PM
Ah! Then I wouldn't be surprised if it is a binary file and not a SQL database (though I'm not super-knowledgeable about this stuff)
I'm terrible with regex. :p

@AmagicalFishy Yes, that's what I would expect. I doubt the overhead of a DB server would be worthwhile.
@AmagicalFishy I can help you there :)

That'd be awesome. I've always wanted to use it (how often are you logged in? I've to go in a few minutes)

For example, if I use a regex and anchor the pattern (tell it to match from the beginning (^) to the end ($)), I get the file I was looking for:
$ locate --regex ^/etc/apache2/apache2.conf$
/etc/apache2/apache2.conf

so i can come harass you w/ regex questions

@AmagicalFishy More often than I should be :)

8:38 PM
haha
So ^ and $ are anchors? (I think I've used these in a Makefile a few times)

@AmagicalFishy Sure, or even better, ask on the site. Either here or on Unix & Linux or Stack Overflow.
@AmagicalFishy Yes, ^ matches the beginning of the line and $ the end.

Very excellent

So, actually, you can use locate the way you meant:
locate --regex ^/path/to/dir/.*FILENAME$
This site is a great and simple primer on regular expressions: regular-expressions.info

perfect!
me@Alcatraz: locate -r ^`pwd`.*.root$

returned exactly what I wanted it to
This is going to be great. Regex seems super powerful

It is that.

8:48 PM
@terdon bookmarked!

Yeah, it's a great site.

I wonder if Chili's got a lawsuit threat too. That turnaround would be fun to watch. @Fabby

Any ideas why this answer's code is not getting highighted? I've added the <!--language: lang-bash--> comment.

it's highlighted for me, i'm not sure what you're asking.

Oh.
Really?

Yes. Really.

9:50 PM
code highlighting is really picky.

That's what I see ^^
But it works on other posts, I just checked. Very strange.
OK, as long as it's just me, no problem.

it also doesn't render unless focus is taken away from the HTML form. That is, if you're in edit mode.
Reload the page @terdon.

@Seth It does, normally, it just takes a while.
@Seth I have. Many times.
But not since your edit :)

still don't see it?
Odd.

What did you do?

9:52 PM
I added spaces.

@Seth I do now. I had reloaded before you fixed it.
@Seth On both sides of the HTML comment? Dang, I thought I'd tried that already. Thanks!
Weird that it worked for hbdgaf and not for me though.

very.

We were looking for different things. I just read it that way.

ah

Sorry if I confused anything.

9:54 PM
nbd

Ah, good. At least it's standardized.

10:38 PM
@fossfreedom that user is being annoying and seems to be more ranting than focusing on his problem. Should we just close it as "Unclear what you're asking " ?

@Serg keep calm - open another window and continuing helping others. I'm sure will cool down soon and work together positively

@fossfreedom Got it. i just don't like users who rant and insult others on the site. K, I'm off to do some other stuff then. Ping me if you need anything, close votes or whatever :)

:) have fun!

10:56 PM
and with that ... its close to midnight. Night all.

@fossfreedom Good night !
