Probing the PSU output voltage while connected to the mainboard was interesting though.

My guess is that the chipset itself is fried but talk to someone who knows more about hardware than I. Fabby, hbdgaf and JourneymanGeek come to mind.

Sometimes it tends to alternate between 0V and whatever it's supposed to be (probably, my multimeter was too slow to capture exactly), and sometimes it stays around the expected value, +- maybe 0.5V

I guess I'll ask a question on Super User before finally throwing that box away...

But, there is a special power connector in this machine I've never seen before and never heard of or can find on the web.

It's not listed here.

It has 8 small pins (about 0.6mm big and square-shaped) in a row, but only 4 are connected.

See if you can get @JourneymanGeek's attention. He knows his hardware.

The connector from the PSU is labelled P4 and the pin array on the board is probably named CTRL.

None of my other PSUs has that plug.

^ is the PSU, but one can't really identify that special connector on the image.

It looks like the rightmost connector in that photo, which you can't see very well... :p

Directly on the right of the 20pin.
