12:11 AM
This Windows Server 2012 install has less than 4 GB of free space left :/

12:29 AM
urg, I thought purge was supposed to remove configuration files, I messed up jack, now I can't connect...

doesn't remove ones in your home.
> ~/.jackdrc ~/.config/jack/conf.xml
a couple I just read about.

Coincidentally, my brother was trying to get Jack to work with Ardour a couple days ago.

it's hard, I think luck let me setup the mixer once, then I didn't change anything...
now I'm remembering how crazy this is
@NathanOsman your name is in my .config folder ;)
because of nitroshare, but is still strange seeing:

Yup :P

now I'm stumped here: community.ardour.org/node/8010

12:40 AM
By the way, I started rewriting NitroShare in Go.

Oh really?

@NathanOsman How is that going, is that a fun language to work with?

It's really different - but in a good way.

that's cool, good is better :)

going to ask in #ardour
if I can remember my IRC password.

12:58 AM
@Seth even if you can't remember it, you were supposed to reset it like a week ago

what?

irc password databases were breached. so you should have reset it by now...

Oh, thanks for the warning.
and I had a good password too. blarg.

>.< it's funny that i'm an advanced warning system :)

password changed.
@hbdgaf I will be counting on you ;P
I wonder why I didn't hear about it..

1:02 AM
>.>
people don't like to talk about it... since it's IRC

hrm, something messed up with jack, it said it "couldn't allocate memory" so started with sudo worked perfect... not good
but it did start so let's see... also it seems that gladish does it's own jack configuration apart from qjackctl, so try patachage

I only have twenty minutes between me and the door to the pathetic job, so now is not the best time for me to troubleshoot...

@hbdgaf don't worry, just shooting ideas to seth

1:16 AM
would it be feasible to hide the et/cshadow usernames & hashes?
or just be more of a pain than any real security hardening?

1:32 AM
@Seth well, I got jack back, not really sure I'm outputting midi from the other computer :/ would probably need a keyboard at this point

Hello all. Can someone review this user? He seems very low quality:

@Whaaaaaat he has been around awhile, not much you can do

Q: <Ubuntu> What is the role of Bios in making system compatible with Linux

user2230605I am running Ubuntu system. My hardware is very new. I want to ask what is the role of Bios in saying if system is compatible with Linux or not. Thanks,

@Mateo I see that. He should still have some cleanup (less ?! scattered through answers)

and actually capitilize, and not do link only, and...

yes.
[redacted because i'm stupid]

ok, got to stop now... because I'd end up serial downvoting... and that is bad

wow.

1:51 AM
just randomally picking a answer from his list, and most of the time it is worth a downvote

A: Can I setup MaaS/Juju and OpenStack completely offline?

dschinn1001Yes you can do it like follows : remove the harddisks out of your notebook/desktop completely then work with this desktop/notebook only with lots of RAM (4 or 8 GB) use for your Linux-works simply a live-stick

@Whaaaaaat huh, well. have fun now. but don't get too crazy remember the 2 drink limit ;)

yah.
2 insanely large drinks :D
but no. you're right.

King ShimkusJust as the question stated. I know it is marked under the private section of our profile, but I was just wondering if you could see stuff like that. And if you don't, do you see anything else that a normal/regular user wouldn't see?

@hbdgaf I'm trying to follow the structure that you used on ODA but I have no luck :(
btw, you had a nice repo for a simple python skeleton but it seems to doesn't exist any more

Once you wrap your head around QML, it actually is pretty neat.
We'll be releasing a new version of the 2buntu app for Ubuntu Touch pretty soon.
The old one is ugly, broken, and in desperate need of replacement.

Is there any relation between this question with my this? (@Rinzwind)

10:44 AM
Consider a question which is asked for Ubuntu version (let ab.xy) and has no answer till date. At the time when question asked version (ab.xy) is in support (not EOL) but tody it is unsupported (EOL) then Should I vote to close as off-topic (EOL)?
I want make sure before voting to close because actually question is not off-topic if we are considering at the time of asking (it is not EOL) But (also it has no any answer) today it can't be answered as EOL! Then is it OK to close as off-topic?

No.
if the Q was asked during not-EOL it is a valid q.

11:05 AM
@NathanOsman yeah, it had the purple background, an had a strange problem where it was transparent
Funny how many news stories still have the preview pictures attached to them...Canonical really needs to make a press kit or something.

11:28 AM
@Lucio the pip python skeleton or the pygi template?

11:52 AM
@Lucio it has to be in the module search path. that's why i do testing in a venv, so i can do all my editing directly in site-packages without mucking about with root.

12:06 PM
@hbdgaf I think the pygi one used to be on paste, that would be a good "make your app" starter kit or something, just drop in some various sample buttons/widgets in the main window and it would be really cool

12:16 PM
@Pandya if you can remove the references to the version and still is a good question, edit it. If even with that is unclear. too broad, etc. close it for that reason.
btw, lets close this askubuntu.com/q/461044/169736 it getting several answers that has nothing to do with the problem
OP says upgrade broke his system, that sounds like a bug, but if you want you can close as unclear too

@Mateo Yeah, I'll see if I still have it and put it up somewhere as as template...

Mark HammonsI've been wanting to learn more about LVM, so I finally have taken the time to dive into it. Q: Why thepiratebay.se showing the content of /var/www/index.html?

Yogeshwar SinghI have elementary OS Luna, which is based on ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I have installed apache2 and turned it off. Now when I am opening thepiratebay.se, it is showing the content of /var/WWW/index.html. And also the localhost is set to 127.0.1.1, and not 127.0.0.1. The thepiratebay.se should show it...

5:24 PM
Now, I could be wrong on this, but isn't Unity based on gnome 3 these days? askubuntu.com/a/526772/44179

Hi everyone, I have a question regarding installing Ubunty alongside my Windows 7 starter on a netbook. I have 100ish GB left on my harddisk, so this should be fine in principle. However, by default, it selects /dev/sda1 (ntfs), which is designated as windows recovery environment, and puts Ubuntu on /dev/sda2 (ext4).
When I go to advanced, I see /dev/sda1 as before, /dev/sda2: Windows 7 (loader) and /dev/sda3. The last one is the biggest one, and I actually would like to put ubuntu there. However, in the "used" column, it reads unknown. How should I proceed?

@Seth: the current version of Unity is a Compiz plugin.

@NathanOsman right, sorry, I formed the question badly. I hate writing on tablets.

5:45 PM
@Bernhard you might get more replies if you didn't type it as ubunty

oh sh*t

@Seth one of these days it won't be a compiz plugin... it'll just be a DE...

@hbdgaf want to type, u and y are close together, but that sounds a bit weird :o

@hbdgaf One of these days == 2017 :P

@Seth it uses some parts of Gnome 3 (like files (nautilus)) but the UI is mostly compiz-based

5:50 PM
In other words, it uses the Gnome 3 libraries (libgtk3, etc.).

Maybe it is beter to ask my question on the site

@Bernhard as long as you don't delete partitions you don't want to delete, anything is fine
you don't need 1-on-1 help
oh, btw, sdXY is pretty arbitrary, I wouldn't worry about it

@Braiam I understand, I've installed Ubuntu multiple times, but if I use the default option, I will no be able to use the large chunk of diskspace that should be available
Because the /dev/sda1 I am mentioning is 14GB, and the on I want to use (partially) is 306GB
I don't want to end up with an installation without real storage space, which I guess would happen if I use the present /sda1

@Bernhard I haven't seen anything but I'm betting you have 3 primary partitions and 1 extended, which is why the installer is refuting to do what you want

I have three partitions of type ntfs now
On my 306GB partition, if I click "Change" it says used as: "do not use the partition"

6:00 PM
@Bernhard to "use" a "part of a partition" you need to shrink it and create a new one

what if "part of a partition" is not an option?

I'm not following... to use any partition you either nuke the partition or shrink/move it and create a new one in the available space, you can't directly use a partition already dedicated to another thing

The problem was, that it does not recognize which part of the disk is used

Q: udev rules fail to run a script on addition of usb device

user1343318Here is a simple rule I created in /etc/udev/rules.d/21-persistent-local.rules for my Seagate 500 GB expansion drive which uses a USB interface on a Debian machine running inside a VM. ACTION=="add", ENV{DEVTYPE}=="usb_device", ATTRS{ID_SERIAL_SHORT}=="NA453QQS", SUBSYSTEM=="usb", HOTPLUG == 1,...

@Bernhard I'm still not following, are you shrinking a partition?

I would like to, yes

Q: Display audio metadata while streaming music over A2DP?

Nathan OsmanI've paired my mobile phone with my Ubuntu 14.04 desktop via Bluetooth and can stream audio from the phone to the desktop using A2DP. Every time I would like to know which song is playing, I have to glance at my phone. Since most car stereos are capable of displaying track information for music ...

@Bernhard then do it

But, as I said, the large partition, named /sda3, has a known size, but the "used" bit is unknown, i.e., can I safely shrink it?
should I use new partition table here?

@Braiam I really see no option to shrink the partition, I can mount it though. For my 14gb windows recovery partition it is not a problem though

@hbdgaf the first one (pip python skeleton)
@hbdgaf I was on a venv but I should try later

@Bernhard it needs to be unmounted to shrink the partition

@Braiam It is unmounted right now, as far as I can tell, but the mount point column is empty

7:00 PM
@NathanOsman Answered.

@Braiam If I open GParted, it has a warning, "Unable to read the contents of the filesystem!"
Hence I cannot shrink it

What filesystem format is it?

ntfs

Do you have Windows 8?

No, it is windows 7 starter

7:16 PM
Do you have ntfsprogs or ntfs-3g installed?

need to check, but it is a live-usb now

huh. maybe it's corrupt? try running CHKDSK /F from Windows.

ntfs-3g is installed at least
wil try chkdsk

@Bernhard boot Windows and do chkdsk /f with administrative privileges for each partition and restart twice

@Braiam ninja'd.

7:34 PM
Is see CHKDSK will take a long time, so will get back to you later guys, thank you so far!

A: Approve as too minor

Shog9There are a couple of problems with this: The meaning of "too minor" varies widely between individuals. Are trivial changes always too minor, or only too minor when they ignore other, more damning problems with the post? The edits you provide as examples illustrate this nicely - even the last o...

@Braiam edited Sep 9. Ah. Thanks.
That really should have had an announcement or something. I have seen a couple of edits being rejected as "invalid" and followed suit.

@muru you should evaluate each edit as "does it improves the quality of the post?", if the answer is "yes" then accept it, if the answer is "no" then reject it with some custom reason or reject and improve it yourself.

8:13 PM
@Braiam @Whaaaaaat Thanks for your suggestions! It now automatically selects the large partition. Thank you very much again!!

8:28 PM
@Braiam I saw Shog9's comments regarding that. I was just stating my behaviour before that, and the likely behaviour of others who don't know of the change and the reasons behind it. Think a Meta question regarding the change is in order?

@Braiam vandalism , all of them ;p
hm... strange word.

@NathanOsman not if he killed the user-specific session init

@Braiam @NathanOsman yeah, that was what I meant. Ubuntu/Unity is still built on bits of a GNOME 3 stack (if I'm using that word correctly..)

@muru Ah, okay.
That was weird. I had my phone connected to my computer via USB and tried to launch an app I had written. Instead of my app, I ended up seeing the contents of the Nautilus window I had open on my computer.
Some sort of display corruption, I presume.
I'll see what happens without the USB cable connected.
