I'm afraid my problem is that I have both an integrated and a discrete graphic card in my computer and various parts of Ubuntu seem to want to use one or the other, but not both and certainly not settle down on only one.

@badp: What video card do you have?

I have an APU (one of those CPU/GPU-on-a-chip things) and a Radeon R9 270X.

The APU seems to be better supported than the R9 :P

Both a GTX 770 and an Intel HD4600

Grub only talks to the GTX 770

Ctrl-Alt-Fn terminals only work on the Intel HD4600 HDMI port

Unity 7 can do both depending on what's plugged in apparently

Unity 8/Mir only shows blinking error messages on the Intel HD4600

Unity 8/X11 gets stuck on the greeter but only gives signal on the Intel HD4600 too IIRC

Can you disable the integrated chip completely in the BIOS/UEFI?

To be honest it's almost a shame because the Intel drivers are so much nicer than the nVidia ones
