@hbdgaf agreed
Wait...is this a new thing? Using @Whaaaaaat as a phrase?

Lucio:
@Whaaaaaat Just ping yourself for the next what :D

@hbdgaf Ah, well...I've never watched Family Guy...so I wouldn't get the reference :P

@hbdgaf Not where that came from. Look at my avatar.

despicable me ripped off family guy. i'm just peeling the onion

@hbdgaf And they ripped me off in 3rd grade. Shall we keep going?

12:26 AM
i think it just comes back to which one memed. you didn't meme in third grade. fg did. i didn't meme with coffee. i need coffee.... wait i did, but you see what i'm saying. when it gets to be a meme, then there's a starting point.

Anyone here read the OMG! Ubuntu! post about their favorite wallpapers for 14.10?

@RPiAwesomeness nope, were there any really good ones?

A: Why number of Suggested Edits showing different?

Geoff DalgasA fix has been deployed. We are now doing a lot more to make sure that each person reviewing suggested edits has a good opportunity to accurately review them. It's a bit like ticketmaster, or any type of reservation system. When you visit a suggested edit review task it's now "checked out" to...

awesomesauce

You pinged me @Braiam?

@Whaaaaaat you did, actually

12:29 AM
Ah yes. You need to run for mod.

I only like 3-4 of the ones that OMG! Ubuntu! chose, but in looking over ALL of the entries, some of them are really amazing. I'm going to do a top-20 writeup on my Blog...
Of the chosen ones, this was my favorite: Reminiscent Rain

blarg. we clearly have different tastes in wallpaper

I'm going to skip 14.10

i skip everything non-lts and pull in all the edger bits i want with ppas

@hbdgaf Which ones do you like?

12:32 AM
What really nice is new in 14.10?

I used that for a while

Whoa....
That certainly is different :o

I like abstract ones...

12:36 AM
Used this one too for some time

I changed all the macs in my high school to this once :
BEST. DETENTION. EVER.

lololol
@Whaaaaaat You not like Mac?

I only ever got detention once. It was for breaking some kid's collar bone by accident when he tried to suplex me.

Mac is a spin off of Linux.

No, Mac is a spin off of a posix compliant system that linux is also a spinoff of

@hbdgaf I threw a charger at a bully and was suspended (soo close to expulsion). I was also not invited back to the school the next year.

@hbdgaf so, they made a car out of the flower display out front at this one, using the circle platforms for wheels and tape in the center to look like hubcaps

Weird. We do odd displays sometimes, but it's usually all product.'

so, a big flower car... interesting
oh, got hooked on an anime

seen it on some top tens. haven't watched it yet though

just watched the first 8 back to back

Hi.
I finally got MultiROM working on my Nexus 5.

hey @NathanOsman
ooo, working with ubuntu touch?

yay. i took it off of my 7 and just run vanilla cyanogen for now

Consequently, these messages are coming to you courtesy of Ubuntu Touch.

@Mateo what the heck are thou talking about?!
RPG?

1:16 AM
@NathanOsman sweet, do you have links, or tips, I've been thinking about trying

It has improved a lot since June.
But this keyboard...

@Braiam nah, real-first-world problems in front of shopping stores

@Mateo O_O

there we go
@NathanOsman good? bad?
I liked the keyboard when I first tried it on the nexus

Sorry, I lost 3G for a sec. there.
Mobile data is kinda unreliable.
Had to restart to get data back.
At least the screen doesn't die now.
Even the camera works.

Q: Supercharge ROOMBA — again!

BraiamFollowing Shog's trough here and the last post asking not to focus efforts on closing old questions here, I would like to apply the most logical solution: delete that crap already. Since the only way to delete a question is closing it, and we are discouraged to do so, maybe we need the ROOMBA to...

2:32 AM
Are we open to questions about Ubuntu 14.10 since it is in beta, or are we waiting for release?

2:52 AM
@CharlesGreen no

@CharlesGreen Depends on the question. Most of them are a no.
Although as the release date gets closer we tend to loosen up.
@NathanOsman Does your Nexus 5 have data issues? A friend of mine's had a part come loose inside and now wifi and data doesn't work o_O

3:24 AM
@Seth It works... I think the problem is partly with Ubuntu Touch and partly with my carrier.
The area I was travelling through at the time is known for poor signal.
Oh dear.
I'm trying to build Firefox OS on a DigitalOcean droplet.
fatal: Out of memory, malloc failed (tried to allocate 440363704 bytes)
I guess the server needs more RAM.
I'll try it again. If it fails, I'll have to spin up a 1GB server.

0_0
@NathanOsman: wouldn't building it on your own vm make more sense?

Absolutely not. My Internet connection barely squeaks above 1 Mbps.
A droplet will have >100 Mbps.
Meh, I'll just go with 2 GB for good measure.
Retrying build...

4:08 AM
Seems to have succeeded the second time around. Building now.

4:27 AM
Good thing I went with the bigger machine.
The build has eaten nearly 18 GB so far.

4:49 AM
...and yet it still managed to exhaust the memory >:(
But I'm going to retry with swap.

5:00 AM
only 18? @NathanOsman you should've gone for 24!

Huh?

lol

@NathanOsman was referring to your 18Gb build eater :=)

hi..
i want to do some text processing with python. IS there any link which shows how to do that?

5:30 AM
What type of processing?
Python isn't particularly well suited to large amounts of text processing... Perl is better cut out for that sort of thing.
But Python is way easier to use/learn.

"some" is very vague. What do you want to do?

Ta-da! I have a build of FirefoxOS for MultiROM: files.quickmediasolutions.com/b2g/signed_b2g.zip

@NathanOsman You are GOD.

Uhm, no.
But I enjoyed putting it together.

Yes. FirefoxOS for Multirom
If only my tablet didn't shatter.

5:45 AM
I compiled it on a VPS with 2 GB of RAM. Next time I'll use a server with 4 GB of RAM.
It kept exhausting memory until I just said "fine, I'll enable swap."
I ran:
sysctl vm.swappiness=40
... to ensure that stuff wasn't getting sent to swap too hastily.
Even so, the build took nearly two hours and ate 20 GB of space on disk.

why 20gb?
I would have loved you for that. I always wanted to try out FirefoxOS.
But:

6:02 AM
:(
@Whaaaaaat Android builds are notorious for taking up extraordinary amounts of space on disk. And FirefoxOS borrows a lot of components from Android.

@NathanOsman Yi. Is the final build that big?

No, the ZIP is about 135 MB.
It's late here. I'm gonna head to bed now.
See you all tomorrow.

@hbdgaf thanks.

did re.sub function works on multiple lines?

@hbdgaf yea.. but i dont know why some body down voted the quesion..

@Pramod it wasn't me... but it's probably because they found several similar questions and several bug reports.
like trying to teach you to search before you ask.

@hbdgaf may be. But still we need to resolve this issue right.? im just trying to get any one have any work around this issue.. hmm ok ok.

@Pramod no, we don't resolve bugs on AU. it's in the FAQ
again, the "undeserved downvote" probably trying to teach you to read before you ask.
typo, for some reason, the bug being off topic is in the on-topic thread... which is also a bug, but here askubuntu.com/help/on-topic

@Braiam Do we know offhand how many questions would be removed immediately if we were to enable the roomba thing?

7:37 PM
Sorry for beating a dead horse. But I just don't get the "more secure" aspect of Ubuntu and Linux in general. Surely if a piece of malware convinces you to install it on Ubuntu it can do all the damage it likes? I mean windows 8 gives me a admin warning before I can install or run specific softwares

@JorgeCastro if I remove the top 100 it runs out of memory, but it's more than 25k questions

hah, awesome, +1!
@Oliver People don't generally install software from untrusted sources

So it's only a matter of mindset then?

I don't really understand the question

@OliverSchöning there's a saying: the most vulnerable part of any complicated system is their users

7:40 PM
Heh.. nice :)

@Braiam 25k questions? We even have that many? Wow.

@JorgeCastro I just seem have stumbled upon a lot of "Pick linux because it is more secure" answers. And they just did not really make sense to me..

Well, if people get malware from downloading things off the web randomly
you just remove that as an option

@OliverSchöning You cannot code security. Security is a mindset.

@JorgeCastro What do you mean?
Yeah that is what I am thinking @Seth.

7:44 PM
The Debian/Ubuntu model is like a predecessor to the app store

It is true Linux has a "better" way of handling things, like file permissions, than Windows, and that makes it somewhat more secure.

the whole point is to not get software from the web

@Seth Usually. It's hard to sneak stuff on to linux.
The user always knows what is happening.

No, they don't.
Like I said, it is better than Windows, but certainly not foolproof.

How is software approved then? I mean app stores seem to be a great way of keeping out the competition

7:45 PM
If you know what and where to look, you can see everything that is happening.
Every process. Every command executed is logged if you know where to go.

@Whaaaaaat If you know what and where to look, why are we having this conversation? ;)

@Oliver usually by people

@Seth I'm not good at it.

I want a caffeine Machine like this one so badly....

like, most of the stuff in the software center is just by people packaging what they want and putting it in there

7:46 PM
@JorgeCastro do you want it too?

seems to have returned

I thought it was blacklisted?

@Andrew GIVE IT TO ME NOW.

@Andrew I pretty much drink diet coke all day, so I'm good

@Whaaaaaat Yea GIVE IT TO ME NOW

7:47 PM
I should build one of those with good specs.

@Seth: you closed askubuntu.com/questions/517872/… as "unclear", IMO it should be closed as OT-EOL. shall I vote to reopen?

@JorgeCastro Diet soda isn't good for you... coffee is better for you.
3

@Andrew Diet soda gives you cancers.

Yea

Yeah but I hate coffee

7:48 PM
@Andrew It also tastes worse.

But does software have to be open sourced to get into the software store?

@Whaaaaaat if you like it please give me a star on it.

@JorgeCastro Have you tried cream and sugar?

@Whaaaaaat yea

7:48 PM
I'm just not a coffee person

@Andrew There. You don't get rep on it though.

I hate coffee I like tea.

@JorgeCastro Did you try milk-based coffee instead?

Basically lattes.
Coffee that you make using milk instead of water.

7:49 PM
I wounder how I could make it?

Steam isnt opensource is it?

I think SteamOS is.

@guntbert Look at the first revision.

It has to be.

@OliverSchöning it is close source

7:51 PM
Anyone here know a GOOD office suite for Linux? (I have had too damn many problems with LibreOffice)

Ok. So both closed source and open source are allowed in the app store?

You can try Kington or OpenOffice

@Seth it was always about 10.04

IF you want Office, Office 265 (the online one) is actually pretty good

I ran it in PoL, but there were some problems. Also, I really don't want to pay monthly for office. Ah well.

7:54 PM
@guntbert yep, I know. Looking back, I guess EOL would have been a better choice, yes. That's what I get for handling flags at 11:00 at night ;P
No, don't vote to reopen, that causes confusion. I'll handle it.

Hurry up and port Office to *nix, Microsoft!!

@Seth, ok :-)

thanks for pointing it out :)

@Whaaaaaat I think Microsoft is gonna fire their entire marketing team if they start suggesting to port things to Linux :p

Did you get your question answered @OliverSchöning?

7:58 PM
If Linux is not really more secure, just less crap gets downloaded from the web. Then yes.

@OliverSchöning If you install a malicious application, all bets are off, although the Linux permission system might save you, depending on how you installed it.

Cool. I tried around 10 times on my laptop. But it might be blacklisted. I stick with Windows until I buy a new laptop. I am dreaming of buying the Surface Pro 3. But I would not want to install Ubuntu on that.
They should fix Chromium in Ubuntu btw.. At least when I tried it it had the minimize/close symbol on the right.

The problem isn't just Windows. A lot of the problem is "So, someone downloaded this crack/keygen for 100 different applications. You can't really tell for each one individually, but when it's every application on your box - it gets noticeable FAST"

you need to right click on the title bar in chromium and do "use system titlebars"

Oh. Thanks!

Q: How can I enable Chrome/Chromium Unity integration?

SeiryuuI installed Ubuntu yesterday on a new laptop. After downloading and installing Chrome, I realized that there is no experimental integration Gnome3/Unity flag in about:flags? I remember using the integration with Chrome on an older machine, is it by some mistake that I can't see it here or was it ...

I guess we do...

I pirated Zbrush today.. because I couldn't find a trial :x If you know one let me know. But I don't buy 700 software without a trial haha.

8:18 PM
Piracy is WRONG!
(unless you're pirating Windows, Office, or the Adobe suite)

I don't like to to it. I even feel bad about doing it just for trialling the software..
Only thing I don't feel bad about is that I havent activated windows yet lol

AU doesn't support piracy. windows, office, adobe, or otherwise. don't go putting words in someone's mouth. pirate-bay is just a set of trackers. they could track ubuntu isos, defcon talks, or any number of other things that are free where torrents are just a distribution medium that reduces server load.

yeah, agree

Q: Why AskUbuntu don't make freeze top bar

KasiyAIt would be better if the top bar freeze when the page is scrolling down.

Greetings from FirefoxOS.

How ya liking it?

It's not bad.
Stack Exchange doesn't recognize it as a mobile browser.
I will have to file a bug on Meta.
It is remarkably stable.

You sure that's an SE bug and not a FF-OS one?
@NathanOsman That is good to here.

If I remember correctly, they use the User Agent to decide whether you get the mobile version or not.

FFOS looks cool.
I want it.

9:22 PM
It is.
I miss my swipe keyboard though.

@NathanOsman yeah, so perhaps the OS is giving the desktop user agent. Unlikely I suppose.
