@Venki How to connect askubuntu.com user to stackoverflow?
How to connect askubuntu.com user to stackoverflow?
Please help me.

Dunno .. I am not in stackoverflow.. probably ask someone who is in it...

Oli
@xiaodongjie Yours are already linked. If you have a secondary account, use the contact form (links at the bottom of the pages on the site) to merge accounts.

Oh,

@xiaodongjie your user profile from here is connected with that one from stackoverflow

1:06 PM
I could not login careers.stackoverflow.com with this user.

Oli
@xiaodongjie That is a different site.
Login or register with the same details/OpenID and your other accounts will be linked in.

I'm trying to run a 32bit program on 64bit xubuntu 14.04 (clean install, not upgrade).

Oli
@DavidOneill The end of the top answer does go onto explain how to do it with multiarch

Please don't post the same question twice. Also, please don't cross-post the same question on multiple SE sites. — terdon 37 mins ago
The OP has posted it twice on AU, once on SU and now once again on U&L

I tried installing ia32-lib, but it isn't available

@Oli is there any disadvantages if SE implement that feature in future?

Oli
1:16 PM
@DavidOneill Hmm, no that's a bit weirder. The package doesn't seem to be in Ubuntu any more (neither the 32bit or 64bit version).

@Oli I initially tried that, to no avail. Then i installed lib32z1 lib32ncurses5 and lib32bz2-1.0
before i installed those, the program gave me "No such file or directory"

Oli
@AvinashRaj Aside from privacy, it seems like a feature without justification. It just doesn't matter if somebody is or isn't online. The website isn't meant for live debate. That's what Chat is for.

Dan
Did something happen to the First Posts queue? Or are we getting that many newcomers to Ask Ubuntu?

now it's giving the more useful error message I posted a sec ago

Oli
@DavidOneill The only suggestion I have at the moment is sucking back the 32bit version of the libgtk2.0-0 package from an older (read: ancient) release.
I can't say what (if anything) that might conflict with, but that's on way to skin a cat (or bork GTK+)
Ideally they'd update their installer (which AFAIK is the only think that needs GTK in shank)

1:25 PM
@AvinashRaj Personally, I would find that very invasive. If I don't want to talk, or respond to a message right now, I don't want people to be able to complain "You were online but you ignored my comment". It's nobody's business whether I am online or not.

yep, we can't escape from the eyes of others.

@jrg like my replies?

what it means if the hostname of a system is localhost?

Oli
@AvinashRaj It means the hostname is localhost. There shouldn't be a problem.

sudo: dpkg: command not found.
does it means both sudo and dpkg commands are not found on the system?

Oli
1:33 PM
@AvinashRaj No that means that's the output of the sudo's inner command

Oli
$ sudo sudo BLAH
sudo: BLAH: command not found

Q: What happened to "Flags" moderation tool?

Eric CarvalhoThere used to be a FLAGS tab in http://askubuntu.com/tools. What happened? The same in meta:

Dan
@JorgeCastro I'm just asking why the sudden high amount of posts in the queue. Has something been changed in the way they are queried or are we just getting that many newcomers after 14.04?

can we please reopen this? askubuntu.com/q/346864/169736 it has several views and the duplicated is not answering the question.

1:40 PM
@Dan we just released 14.04 and Windows XP went away, it's been like that for a few weeks.

Oli
@Braiam Yup.

Dan
Great, I expected 14.04 to be a hit after its release, but I didn't expect it this much.

we usually get wailed on for a few weeks after a release

@Braiam o/

the close queue got pretty smoked too

1:50 PM
@JorgeCastro Now that the flag queue is gone, do you still be to see the flag indicator number?

@Dan I think the narq and lq flags are now being passed to the queues, that might explain it.

2:06 PM
I haven't noticed any numbers

Is planned the LQ-queue counter for >Xk rep users? — Braiam 8 mins ago

I see about 5 flags now. You guys don't see the blue indicator.?

@Seth Nah, it's gone (at least from SU and U&L where I have the rep to see it)

:-(

Also gone from the tools tab in the >10k tools

2:13 PM
@Seth why are you sad... you get 90% less flags thanks to that

@Braiam actually we don't. Not enough reviewers
I think Itd go faster if you had an indicator.

sends slaves to work in the queue
I did my 20 for today

cant we consider this offtopic?

Q: I have Ubuntu Linux, do I install the Windows 7

user272497I am not familiar with Ubuntu Linux OS. and I have a new Ubuntu Linux Laptop, now I want to remove Ubuntu Linux from my Laptop and Install Windows 7 without dual-boot. How I do this? Is the DOS is the same as for Windows 7? Please help me out in this matter, any help and support you give me will...

it is a windows issue >:)

i think there is a question about this ^^

@Rinzwind is a weak question, and my comment already answers his question

2:28 PM
@AvinashRaj don't tell people to search the site
just dupe it

why are we closing already answered stuff as EOL? askubuntu.com/q/254218/169736
if it was not answered I would understand, but this is answered.

Oli
@searchfgold6789 ^^?

got it @Jorge thanks :D

@Oli Am I closing answered stuff and it's bad?

@AvinashRaj your comment is not friendly ;-)

Oli
2:42 PM
@searchfgold6789 We just wouldn't neccessarily bother closing something that retroactively becomes off-topic... Especially if it has a few answers like that.
Mainly because it's unneccessary work. If somebody VTCs, that ends up on the close queue and then another load of people spend time working out what the problem is when they could be nuking rubbish or answering things.

you mean the comment in that question?
@Rinz
mods removed that :D

@Oli Okay

Oh, so many installation type questions, a happy week for me :-)

btw @Oli, who we have to abduct to blacklist the installation tag?

Oli
@Braiam Yeah fair point. I thought about that earlier. I'll grab the black bags and gaffer tape.

2:48 PM
I will bring the stun gun then. I'm too coward to use the crowbar :/

Oli
Email sent.

\o/

@terdon are you there?

3:06 PM
@Braiam Is this really off-topic... Looks fine to me, maybe I am missing something..

@Aditya Unix questions are not on topic here, but in Unix & Linux

@Braiam Can't we do that on Ubuntu?
Did you just close-voted it based on tag alone?

@Aditya tag + title

I am not sure... Can't we do that on Ubuntu?

I sure hope so!

3:10 PM
The answer given looks like it works on Ubuntu..
@JorgeCastro Then, it should be reopened, right?

we'd be in a bunch of trouble if we couldn't generate ssh keys!

I don't have knowledge about ssh stuff, hence confirming things with you..

@Aditya the most upvoted answer doesn't take into account "once again NOT at the default location."

@Braiam Then please edit it or provide an answer yourself...

3:19 PM
this is my typical first post experience in another SE site: academia.stackexchange.com/a/19653/9084 :D

can we close this already as EOL? askubuntu.com/q/223531/169736

@Braiam I wouldn't close that, but would prefer an answer to point to upgrade to a newer version saying it works there (if it actually works)...

> viewed 363 times

But if it gets closed, meh...

you think it's relevant?
I mean 1 view per day and I'm the most likely culprit that it has views

3:23 PM
@Braiam is it a bug?

> They tested on Redhat with VLC 2.0 and that's what they say they will support.
if it's a bug, it's a Ubuntu bug
if it's not, then it got fixed

Whatever, I am not casting any vote, if others do I don't have much issues...

Hi
Where is the developing site of python.
as launchpad.net of Ubuntu.

@Braiam oh, I had logged in it.
and then what do i do?

3:28 PM
err... what?

For i append a patch to it, what do i do?
@Braiam or report a bug to it.

@xiaodongjie bugs.python.org

@Aditya oh, thanks to your help.

welcome

4:07 PM
is that safe to run

raazOk I have solved the issue myself. I ran these two commands in terminal (CTRL+ALT+T): cd /var/lib/dpkg/updates && rm -rf 0045 sudo dpkg --configure -a And my issue was solved.

just now installed ubuntu-restricted-extras
i stopped the operation while configuring packages.

@AvinashRaj so you canceled the operation
why?

@Braiam because it tries to download flashplugin installer.

@AvinashRaj you only want mp3 codecs right?

mp3 codes are installed successfully, i can able to play music through rhthymbox.

if you don't want the flash plugin just install the dependencies instead the metapackage

Q: Ubuntu 14.04 Ipv6 multicast

JoséI having troubles to setup an IPv6 multicast server with Ubuntu 14.04, the server fails with Invalid argument when try to bind to IPv6 multicast address, checked with mcfirst tool and got the same error. mcfirst -6 ff01::1:1 10000 bind [multicast]: Invalid argument errno=22 This worked perfect...

@MichaelHampton Heh, someone is on NerdAnswer.
Wait, no it looks like they copied the question.. o_O

@Seth Yes, they copy practically everything from SF. Not much we can do, since they seem to have hit all the required attribution points.

Yeah, I noticed that. Hey, at least they have attribution. Most of 'em don't.

4:53 PM
@MichaelHampton ugh, that title.... the error suggests 3 things: he didn't read the manual, he did read the manual but has a typo, the tool is trolling

I can't even find a mcfirst package in Ubuntu, although I found the manpage.

@Seth ssmping

It says Provided by: right at the top?

mm... fails on debian

hello mister michael

4:57 PM
@Braiam ah.

@Braiam do you take bets? >:) Mine is on the 3rd :D

@MichaelHampton Duh. facepalm.
Doesn't seem there have been any changes since Precise, so shouldn't be a feature change.

I swear he doesn't have that address in his system

Yeah, something changed elsewhere

Oh the edits, the edits!
Why is everyone trying to kill the installation tag with edits? Don't they realize that is pointless?

5:05 PM
@Seth why approve this? askubuntu.com/tags/usplash/info
only 1 question with the tag

So? A tag deserves a good wiki.

yeah, but the tag itself will be delete in 6 months if nobody ask about that

Well if that happens it happens. No need to reject a perfectly valid edit because you think it'll all be gone in 6 months.

it reeks to rep/badge whoring tho

I don't think so.. I've seen you create quite a few similar tags for questions like that and I didn't think much of it.

5:18 PM
anything usplash related can be blown away

Q: Place to ask questions about hosting an Ubuntu 14.04 release party?

BryceAtNetwork23My company is interested in hosting an Ubuntu 14.04 release party. Googling really has not revealed any solid info on how to go about doing that (save for the list of LoCos hosting them here). Is this type of question appropriate for the main Ubuntu site? Or would Meta or another site be a bet...

I will not answer it now, but the last update was in 2010, so I doubt it even build anymore

Probably isn't.

5:32 PM
it's not in the archive
so probably not

ah. i see you mentioned my tag.

Q: How do I ask about availability of a certain class of software on Ubuntu?

Nickolai LeschovGeneric part: I would like to learn about the applications that exist in a certain class of software on Ubuntu. But asking a question like that is a software recommendation and is against the rules of Ask Ubuntu. Is there a way to ask a question about that on Ask Ubuntu in a way that will follow...

@pacificfils Oh, no. Samsung have low quality, So I am using a iPhone.

@xiaodongjie you're obviously confused. iPhones are $50 to make, $500 to buy. Samsung are $150 to make, $200 to buy.

my samsung S2 is working fine :_

5:47 PM
@xiaodongjie Also, this is AskUbuntu. We like android here. AskDifferent is apple.stackexchange.com

@pacificfils Oh, then. I'll stop it.

I need some questions to answer :O

Q: Can I Install uSplash?

pacificfilsI just had a nostalgic flashback to Ubuntu 7.04 and remembered uSplash and how much I liked it (I think it was the progress bar). While Plymouth is cool, it just doesn't do it for me. How would I go replacing Plymouth with uSplash? How can I easily change the splash screen between the two?

yes that's me

@AvinashRaj I stay away from them if the error shows nothing on google

Q: LightDM is not working with selinux - enforcing mode

BrightBeautyI am using ubuntu-12.04.2 LTS, it was working pretty well. But then I tried to change my system with selinux as enforcing mode. Then lightDM stopped working. So I could not login my system on GUI.

selinux FAIL

5:52 PM
@Rinzwind lol :D

@Rinzwind I think that It's an important problem.
@pacificfils oh? why?

you're probably better off making a plymouth bootsplash for usplash rather than trying to get usplash to work

hehe

@xiaodongjie i'm going to delete that question.

@xiaodongjie because selinux is a fake excuse for cheap security.
@AvinashRaj LOL +1

5:54 PM
@AvinashRaj oh, no.

@pacificfils do not think it will be possible

yeh, it's true.

@xiaodongjie Do you even Ubuntu?

why no?
@xiaodongjie

I agree witj Jorge!!! :D

5:54 PM
do it - do it - do it - do it

it's already had 2 delete votes .

@AvinashRaj @pacificfils You!!!!!!!!!!! :(

moral of this story: DO NOT TURN ON SELINUX

5:55 PM
@AvinashRaj @pacificfils I like selinux and lightdm

but not me. @xiaodongjie

take it outside.
lol

afk for a bit. (cuz of headache etc)

@xiaodongjie i'm sure. I didn't.

@MinatoNamikaze What do you think about it?
about selinux and lightdm.

5:57 PM
what was removed? i missed it
Mint DM 4EVA!

selinux- Not absolutely essential

selinux - pathetic excuse for "security"

lightdm- Oh come on, it's an HTML5 greeter system. What's to hate?

lightdm with selinux is a big, it's reported already

mintdm

5:59 PM
@JorgeCastro A bug?

@pacificfils Why you follow @AvinashRaj, as you don't know about that problem?

it's the 2nd hit for "lightdm selinux"

because i know lightdm, i know selinux, and i know that they never work.

i'm not deleted that question. @xiaodongjie
