Q: Remove lines of code from multiple files

DodonGood day, I'm a noob so please be gentle :) I'm running a Web Server in a Virtual Box for testing some projects. And I noticed that some of the html files have this unwanted lines. I want these lines of code from multiple html/htm files removed so I did it like this: find /Desktop/TEST_REMOV...

We have some users lately who think those things are off-topic.

@terdon I'm not involved!

@Braiam Never said you were! :)
@Seth Yeah, I've seen a lot of shell scripting Qs with close votes.

Bumped it from the queue. Might need to talk to a few folks. The weird thing was that no one voted from the queue, those were all organic votes :-/

btw, it got 4 close votes..
@Seth O_O
what the...?
do we have a close ring of some sort?
like "The Tavern on AU" or something?

12:23 AM
You would think...

Wow, I just tried to swipe to get the home screen on android... Was playing with touch too much

Weird... Gmail won't let me upload this one attachment...

@NathanOsman 10MiB?

It's a 37 KiB PDF.
Heh - it works in Chromium.

blames chrome

It was Firefox :P

HERESY!
it's never firefox, but lupus

1:27 AM
I'm afraid I'm going to have to ditch Chromium. This new aura 34 is sooo buggy.

just upgraded the studio machine to 14.04 ;)

@Seth say that to Jorge...

@NathanOsman I saw a 2buntu app on Ubuntu touch

Juju GUI is fun:
My jaw has hit the floor.
Look at one of our local ISP's "support" pages: webhost.shawhosting.ca/support
It looks like it was designed in FrontPage fifteen years ago.
It's even worse if you view the page source. It looks like something I would have written when I was 13.
(Apologies to all 13-year-old programmers out there.)
> "Last updated: 2004/11/09"
:P Well, that explains a few things.

I would say Eeeek, but that isn't proper usage of the meta meme :P
Hm, is it a new chromium thing not to endlessly play gif loops? Nice.

2:32 AM
@Seth FX apparently do so too

@Braiam Awesome.

@Seth Some GIFs are set not to repeat.
So it's possible you were viewing one of those.

hm, could be.

3:23 AM
how do i make a transparent png in the terminal?
Is it even possable
@Seth can you help me

@Andrew imagemagik
perhaps...

@Braiam I have never heard of a command imagemagik. So what is it?

> ImageMagick is a software suite to create, edit, and compose bitmap images.
It can read, convert and write images in a variety of formats (over 100)
including DPX, EXR, GIF, JPEG, JPEG-2000, PDF, PhotoCD, PNG, Postscript,
SVG, and TIFF. Use ImageMagick to translate, flip, mirror, rotate, scale,
shear and transform images, adjust image colors, apply various special
effects, or draw text, lines, polygons, ellipses and Bézier curves.
All manipulations can be achieved through shell commands as well as through

@Braiam is it install by deflat?
Can someone sent me over their /usr/share/unity/icons/ ,since I don't use unity, and I want to help someone.
Hello Xiadongjile

@Andrew Kind of a big folder..

3:32 AM
How big is it? 200MB?
When I was using unity It was only like 60MB

Lemme see.
oh, it's just 4k actually.

Them sent it my way.

eh?

@Seth I am not going to install Unity for just that folder!!! You have it. It is like 98% smailer than a MB. So what is your problem?

"Them sent it my way" made me think they sent it to you.. Anyway, I'm under no obligation to send it to you, but let me see what I can do.

3:37 AM
@Seth did you know that this site run off of MS .Net Framework there for it must run Crappy Dos Edition of os(server).

@Andrew I know it runs on .NET, yeah.

@Seth WHY!!!
@Seth I don't support MS but by using this site, I kina am.

Because the people who wrote it know .NET?

@Andrew apparently MS SQL is awesomesauce

@Braiam With some Freedom takers on top of that awesomesause.

3:40 AM
MS SQL IS MOST DEFINITELY NOT AWESOMESAUCE CHEAP.

Mmmmm.

Seriously, why do people think it's such a big deal what SE runs on?
@Andrew I currently don't have any way to send the folder to you, unless G Drive will let me, which I doubt.

@Seth Hummm. I want to see MS die!!!!! With all of it groly.
@Seth over the internet

@Andrew That would be bad.

@Seth I agree. If it works, more power to them. Fanboy-ism doesn't really help here.

3:41 AM
@Andrew I don't have a way to send it to you over the internet.

Okay
@Seth How is MS diying BAD, Is there something wrong with you, do we as a community need to take you to a hospital to make sure that you are mentally ok?

@Andrew Excuse me? If MS died quite a bit of the computer industry would go with it.

@chaskes hahh? that doen't make any sence.

OP thinks the 3.9 GB refers to his usb drive

3:45 AM
@chaskes sure

thx

Oh, I think she/he thinks that since the label said it was 128GB, it sould say it is 128GB in size. Don't he/she realize that formating it will take up some space, plus Mib, Mb are difference units, there for.... And sometime they round up

You would think...but no. Clearly says the 3.9 is the problem.

@chaskes I thought that I did misunderstood it, guess not.

btw @Andrew I think they changed haproxy for nginx a while back

3:51 AM
@Braiam I think no one could do it...
Why don't we get reputation if our flag was helpful?

OwlChat, by SpiderOak. Looks promising.

shall we close this askubuntu.com/questions/30334/… as too broad?

@AvinashRaj No!

@AvinashRaj 73 answers is enough, don't you think

@Braiam it is alot, but how is broad?

@Andrew why not?

So you two want to close it?

4:52 AM

that's a book example of too broad

@AvinashRaj someone tried to use that question to ask another question?

More than anything Seth or who ever have the power to should protect it!

@Andrew why?

not protect, its lock.

No that is tottlay lying

6:32 AM
Yeah. Thats what i think too!! Bad way to earn a badge!!! So morally wrong.. but by the rules of AU is it right? I mean even google.com can be digested but some users have i-dont-have-one.com ... i cant find the user now but i remember seeing one with that website very well .....

HI! There seems to be a badge for completing user profile. But I visit a few profiles which state a website that dont exist or have something like google.com . Is this right to do, since there is a badge awarded for completing profiles?

@Takkat it is more rare than epic :D

@Rinzwind only people who never have a will get this badge!

@Takkat i earned 125 rep from a single virtualbox question.

@AvinashRaj lol :D
if you got the chance to answer a question that is popular the rep just keeps flowing in

@Rinzwind according to your's it's too small..

6:39 AM
@Rinzwind only if not someone writes a better answer.

that is whjy you keep editing :=S

too much editing leads to CW.

now that the auto-CW is gone it's much more fun to edit around.

@AvinashRaj I heard it's gone!

and it is CW ....

CW gone?

No...I mean in all icons not just s/w centre icon

Hmm.. even a different theme with cool icons is made ugly by those ugly squares... I tried numix BTW...

@Venki nope. you need to edit the images

have someone else edit the images :+

So.. no other go??...Just edit the images...myself or let someone else do it for me :-p

more reps from vbox type questions.. I think i'll earn a bronze tag bage.

Q: Is it right to post false details in one's user profile?

VenkiIn AU there seems to be a badge for completing one's user profile. But when I visited a few profiles it seemed to me that they have false details. I mean they have every right to not post their details..but false details? And one gets a badge for giving false details! That seems wrong to me!(Well...

@Venki no rep for bounty is rep gone :=)

7:10 AM
:'-(

forget about that.

50 rep is nothing >:)
you can make that in seconds :D

I am trying to learn some bash... maybe after that 50 rep would be easy .... But for atleast a month(when I will be confident with bash) 50 rep will mean much ...

@Venki usually you get some rep from featuring your question too!

Hmmm....

7:19 AM
ideally you would get more rep from featuring than it had cost you...
...but that's rare nowadays.

So it seems.. my question just got two upvots after bountying...
So its just -40 instead of -50 ...

@RaduRădeanu this single command will works like charm,
sudo dpkg -i --force-all --force-overwrite /var/cache/apt/archives/gnome-settings-daemon-schemas_3.8.6.1-0ubuntu11_all.deb
IMO, you will got downvotes for force option.
@Rinzwind if a posted is edited more than 10 times by the poster then it automatically turns into CW.

> In the past, questions could be made community wiki by their authors or by certain automatic triggers but now the only means is by a moderator converting it to community wiki.
linky above

yeh, then what happens if i enable CW option while posting a question or answer.

@AvinashRaj then it will be CW - your choice

7:30 AM
then there are two choices.
moderator,poster
am i correct?

correct
Answers to CW questions will still remain CW, obviously
The automatic conversion to CW from multiple edits was removed to encourage post maintenance.
But too many edits will trigger a moderator flag
If the mod then decides it's better to have this post CW it may be converted.

@Takkat why you didn't recommend the op to install vbox extension pack.

where?

thanks for clarifying me :-)
Javier told that. But failed to post.

@AvinashRaj Why do you consider force option a bad thing?

7:36 AM
@AvinashRaj they said they already enabled it...

--force-things, --no-force-things, --refuse-things

Force or refuse (no-force and refuse mean the same thing) to do
some things. things is a comma separated list of things speci‐
fied below. --force-help displays a message describing them.
Things marked with (*) are forced by default.

Warning: These options are mostly intended to be used by experts
only. Using them without fully understanding their effects may
break your whole system.

@AvinashRaj Ah... then my answer is for experts :)

@AvinashRaj lol - doing what VBox tells you to do is always a good idea :)

@AvinashRaj anyway, is better than to remove all the PPA repositories

@RaduRădeanu i think it would be solved without using --force option.

7:41 AM
@AvinashRaj how?

but it needs op's interaction.

yes, it need maybe to be a very good expert

sudo dpkg -P gnome-settings-daemon
sudo apt-get install -f

@AvinashRaj I don't thing is a good idea to purge gnome-settings-daemon at all
similiar one, doesn't have the same importance

why?
Package: gnome-settings-daemon
Priority: extra
Section: gnome
BTW,

7:54 AM
Read also the rest of apt-cache show gnome-settings-daemon, not only what it fits good for your answer:
This package contains the daemon which is responsible for setting the
various parameters of a GNOME session and the applications that run
under it. It handles the following kinds of settings:
.
* Keyboard: layout, accessibility options, shortcuts, media keys
* Clipboard management
* Theming: background, icons, GTK+ applications
* Cleanup of unused files
* Mouse: cursors, speed, accessibility options
* Startup of other daemons: screensaver, sound daemon
* Typing break

oh, it's an important package for the systems running ubuntu-gnome.
any of these answers will work if op interact with us.. :-)
we may provide solutions according to his replies. we have simulate -s parameter.

@AvinashRaj maybe in this case he got scared by de edits war...
because of this, these actions are not constructive

@AvinashRaj Before I start pointing fingers, can you confirm that the code in your answer is your original work (and isn't copied from somewhere else)?

you may see many answers on AU like that. But i'm the first to post for boot-repair.
lol

Slightly odd that it was the PPA owner who was copying the workaround rather than just fixing the problem. I emailed them to use the proper attribution (or you can edit the page yourself).

but the question has "Started boot-repair on live-usb, removed grub, and then was instructed to write in terminal "sudo chroot "/mnt/boot-sav/sda5" apt-get install -y --force-yes grub-pc linux" but I get"
seems odd to me ;-)

Migration of MSO links to MSE links

@RaduRădeanu meta.stackoverflow (MSO) used to be about the entire SE network... Until meta.stackexchange started (a few days ago). All the old content from MSO was moved to MSE and all new content on MSO is about SO and nothing else. So there are a load of links pointing at MSO that don't work.
