12:02 AM
thanks

getting to just a grub prompt should be solve-able in much the same way. that's the best pointer i've got. i only touch those sorts of problems if i can actually touch the computer in question.
sup @Virusboy

sup @hbdgaf

having a meh kind of day. got some things working though. you?

kinda same here
fixing a dell right now, the guy showed me how it perma boots into prepost
it also dont always show me whats on screen
so now i gotta rip the fucker apart

i don't know how i ever lived without anaconda... installs a bunch of pita stuff for you. makes a global venv for your user - so all pip installs magically happen there without sudo. loving it. i've only had 1 or 2 pathing problems for things with binary extensions i had installed globally.
@Virusboy you need exactly four points. submit two edits real quick and screenshot your rep ;)

12:12 AM
haha no

@hbdgaf Sorta. I've got a TTY
@hbdgaf anaconda?

@RPi_Awesomeness Please don't ping mass people for generic reasons, it's rather rude. If you ask for help and no one responds then it might be appropriate to ping one or two. Otherwise, please don't :)

@RPi_Awesomeness better than nothing. anaconda is a python distribution with loads of built-ins and a separate pseudo package manager for some of the really hard to install bits.

@Seth Sorry, I was freaking out. I know better.

It's ok, just try not to repeat it ;)

12:15 AM
again ^^

looks like a bot-post.
see - "Tags: mhddfs lvm raid zfsraid jbod lubuntu fluxbox grsync sshserver"

@Seth Yessir :)

if it were a bot post i flagged it wrong then

@hbdgaf Flag it?

12:17 AM
I'm on the fence. The question might almost be legitimate if it weren't put up with bad intentions.

its still opinionated

it is.
when i see something with tags: something that is tagged as something else, it makes me think spam-post from somewhere or another site hammering a stack-exchange site to get answers it wants.

it does seem it covers both spam and purely polling

Man, if I could shake this cough, it would be a start. At least it's a dry cough instead of a wet one now.

Ugh. Coughs

12:24 AM
Yeah, there's something going around here that starts as nasal drip, then turns in to dizziness/weakness/all-over-pain, then violent stomach problems, then pneumonia/bronchitis like symptoms. It's like a 3 week flu.

Well...balls.

who's?

That's one solution eliminated :P

its prolly better to house the OS in whole on a single Drive

I don't get sick, but some ASDFASDFASDFASDF used my coffee cup in the break room without asking then didn't wash it properly. I hate coworkers.

12:28 AM
@Virusboy But that's not the issue here. The system boots & logs in just dandy - I'm just missing anything related to Unity

maybe
do you have Ubuntu_Desktop installed?

there's a canonical question for that... did you check the site already?

@Virusboy Yeah.

no i tihkn this is something else

@hbdgaf Yes, I have several different tabs - including the canonical one - open currently

12:30 AM
if you get it working, you should add your solution to this one askubuntu.com/questions/17381/…

can you sudo Unity?

@hbdgaf Yeah....but I'm in a TTY so it gives me a bunch of missing extension errors because I'm in a TTY

oh, you were talking about adding xswat the other day. did you do that?

@RPi_Awesomeness Try sudo Unity

@Virusboy I did
Well. I'm trying the last Canonical answer - added the Xorg-Edgers PPA and I'm installing NVIDIA-340 drivers
Seems this is a relatively common issue with 14.04...
Geez. What is it with 14.04 & NVIDIA graphics issues...
Oh to have the internet speeds of another

12:54 AM
Nvidia coding is horrible for anything outside of Winblows

I always thought they had better support than AMD for Linux...
Or does AMD suck too?

AMD has no support

can't find info on google about how to run/host an rss server on Ubuntu

@Virusboy I figured. So, who the heck do we go with? Make our own GPUs?

there are tird party people who are committed to GPU linux kernels

1:03 AM
Yeah, but the performance for Nouveau is horrible
I was getting absolutely horrible FPS before installing the proprietary NVIDIA drivers for my GTX 750 Ti

thats typical

@hbdgaf thanks :)

For general work, however, Nouveau is just fine. I believe it's what's on my laptop.
Well.... I've got my desktop icons back...but no unity stuff & things

hmmm that doesn't sound right

I can open a folder I have on my desktop and browse the files...but no Ctrl+alt things work

1:07 AM
@RPi_Awesomeness which one? Am I going to need to say don't do the popular xorg-edgers answer again?

@Mateo_ I did that one...
And it did something
but...didn't fix my issue entirely

whats soemthing?

I now have desktop icons
I have nautilus open and can browse files, but no unity dash or bars
Ugh. Why must this be such a pain..

sounds like you have missing dependancies

Yeah. Screen blinks, desktop icons show up & that's it
@Virusboy Maybe..?

1:10 AM
definitly

@Mateo_ Why shouldn't I do that?
@Virusboy aka which ones?

@Mateo_ whats the meta package for Unity?

3
Q: Where can I find widgets for Unity?

VirusboyI want to class up my desktop with various widgets that tell me network bandwidth hdd usage during r/w and real time memory usage just to name a few. What a good way to go about that?

im thinking of putting a bounty up

Oct 2 at 20:37, by Mateo
what ever you do don't install xorg-edgers ppa, even if it is a popular answer ;)

1:13 AM
@Mateo_ Why not?

I dont understand how that a popular answer

Other than the fact that it's bleeding edge
I'm planning on removing the PPA once I get the graphics working again

you can via terminal

well, and you can easily get to the black screen/ low graphics problems by doing that

1:15 AM
sometimes it does magic for certain things, but could mess things up as well

it should be used only in a non GUI setting

I honestly have no clue what could have caused this. I hadn't edited any configs, hadn't run any updates, hadn't done anything other than download games & play on Steam...
I just chose Shutdown from the lock screen.

http://askubuntu.com/questions/563828/how-to-change-my-home-directory
@Mateo_ Should this have an answer as chroot your new /home?

I think steam tries to update graphics drivers ;p

1:17 AM
not internally

@Mateo_ If Steam screwed me over ... oooo

@Virusboy like do the livecd to change that stuff?

Well. Balls.
dconf resert -f /org/compiz/ doesn't work
error: Could not connect: Connection refused

sudo?

facepalm
Hey! We got a desktop!
Sorta...

1:21 AM
there is more things to do on that page,

i guess thought you could from the drive itself

next it said to restart unity with the next commnad

something like chroot /home sda/iwantmydir here
oh wait

setsid unity

@Mateo_ I did that

1:23 AM
chroot /dev/sda1/whatevermydirnameis
considering the user name and no suffix commands are required

Rebooted & we're all good :D
AFAIK

nice

Yay!
Now, to disable Xorg-edgers
ASAP

I was about to type try a hard restart ;)

@Mateo_ he's also trying to ssh into it

1:25 AM
@Virusboy interesting

when he did it didnt act like it was suspose to

so no physical access?

Phew. I was scurred

no he has full access but he needs to know how to change the /home
I always though chroot was the command for just that

Now, how to make sure that Steam doesn't ever try to "upgrade" my graphics again
And, I have a blog post :D

1:28 AM
@RPi_Awesomeness I think it will be fine now, bookmark that page ;)

i have steam ad it doesnt do that with me

yeah, so this is the awesomesauce i was looking for last weekend github.com/SteelPangolin/flask-oidc

I dunno. I'll just never shut down from the lock screen again!

oh, yeah that could be a problem if it was doing something

bah, VMWare did it again.

1:30 AM
@Mateo_ That's just it, I don't think it was doing anything. However, I could be wrong
@Seth Did what again?

did your NAT spoof itself @Seth

@Seth the kernel stuff?

For some reason it think it needs to disconnect/remove my SATA controller's driver when it starts a VM. Obviously that doesn't end well.

@Mateo_ Oh did you see that in Nathan's stream? ;)

1:32 AM
that doesnt even sound like a normal function

I know right?

is it a bug

No idea.

must have... something about it was floating around my brain

Ooo. Cool. LinusTechTips is gonna review makeymakey or Kano!

1:33 AM
I haven't messed with it too much because it crashes everything.

@Seth what is your setup exactly?

I was gonna try installing OS X Mavericks in a Virtual Box...but I had graphics issues and yeah
actually

@Virusboy what do you mean?

@Seth Did you set any VM to RAW as a disktype and select a disk directly? I don't have those problems with VMware.

That coulda been what caused it. Does Virtual Box ever mess with graphics drivers/controllers like @Seth was mentioning about SATA controllers?

1:34 AM
@Seth I mean how is your VMBox setup

Blech. Xine is ugly

not exactly, but emulating graphics from host/VM can be tricky.
@RPi_Awesomeness Not that I am aware of.

kk
Well, now that I've got all my games redownloaded (thanks Steam :P) I'm gonna download the Windows 10 Dev Preview ISO and see how that goes...
should be interesting
First real experience with Virtualization - my laptop could not handle it in the slightest

win 10 looks like it will be nice

Well, it'll be better than 8!

1:37 AM
@Seth are you automounting from host?

And they finally added virtual desktops. Way to be behind the times MS :D

@Virusboy I'm using VMWare, no VBox, and all I did was increase the RAM. It works the first time but any subsequent boots it says it cannot do something with the hard drive and then Windows blue screens because it can no longer access the hard drive.
@Virusboy not sure?

That was one of my major issues with productivity on Windows after using Ubuntu - the lack of multiple desktops.

later

1:39 AM
oh, and I think I should shout out to them(windows) for stopping support for xp :) , my friend just gave me about 8 p4-dualcore pc's, going to put ubuntu on them to donate for a library in liberia

see ya @hbdgaf

@Mateo_ Yay for libraries in Liberia running Ubuntu!

turn off guest sharing betwen host

Let's see what this does on the home network >:)

whoa, that's nice!

1:41 AM
Steam needs to put CS:GO on sale for 50% off. I can't get both that & Portal 2...

pretty]

If they don't I have to decide. Guys...any input? Portal 2 vs CS:GO.

as long as its not by Nexoon ill +1 you

Can't get it to onebox...

O.o

1:42 AM
That's an expensive router
I need to convince my parents we need a new one. Our current one is ~8 yrs old and it's getting slow, buggy & doesn't have the range we need
Kinda funny actually, they're the ones who're noticing the range issue - courtesy of my mom's new iPad

I'll let you know how this works.
Our apartment has waaaay too many access points causing interference.
This should be a bit better :)

I swear wine is retarded

That is one networking issue I don't have.

setarch i386 -3 wine D:\games\battle.net\battle.net launcher.exe
Unable to find location

In other news - I was given Portal.
And played it straight through as soon as it was downloaded.
That game was amazing

1:51 AM
portal 2 :)

@Mateo_ You're saying I should get that over CS:GO?
I mean, I could get both, except for the fact that CS:GO is currently $10.**04** and Portal 2 is $9.99
dangit .04 cents

never played that one, so yeah I would buy portal 2

@Mateo_ You know what CS:GO is, right?

@RPi_Awesomeness you could sell a trading card?
@RPi_Awesomeness one of the counter strike games?

@Mateo_ Yeah. Just checking :)

1:54 AM
haven't played any of them

@Mateo_ Nope, I have to wait until the 26th for my 30 day period to be up :P

ah

2:07 AM
I've got three VMs running, testing out GlusterFS at the moment.
And I am thankful for 8 GB of RAM.

I can imagine your fan right now..
Better not.

CPU usage is very low.

WHOOO BOOM!

I bet it's warm at your house right now @NathanOsman :P

2:08 AM
The VMs are basically all idling at the moment.

oh.. I guess that helps.

load average: 0.80, 0.63, 0.46
...on a quad-core.
Hmmm... Gluster seems to actually work fairly well.
I've got a replication volume set up, so it behaves just like a local instance of DropBox.

What do you think of this @NathanOsman?

A newline does technically work. But it's a fixed size (the newline will only be as tall as the font).
Given the choice between the rectangle and a newline, I'd stick to the rectangle. At least you can adjust the size.
Both are still hacks, though.

yeah, that's rather what I figured.

Q: How does one set up a linode with a certain number of in inodes?

JohnNormally when one creates a linode, they choose a plan, and then deploy a linux distribution, and choose how much of the disk to allocate. Normally there is a swap partition and a main partition. But once you do that, the filesystem is already created with a certain number of in odes! So how do ...

@Seth I get the feeling that my self-answer doesn't count for Naruto...

oh?
hm..
it's possible that's true to prevent people abusing it (since you control the checkmark)

@Seth Yap.
Could I get that upvote now? I'm curious as to whether or not it requires an upvote to get the selfie hat

;)

Or maybe it's that you need another answer along with yours...hmmm

2:38 AM
that wouldn't make sense IMO.

@Seth Yeah. Boy, figuring out these hats is almost as challenging as some of the secret ones!
@Seth Yup, required an Upvote! Thanks :D
Egad! I've dropped from the top 5 on AU! I must get all the hats!
Quickly! Downvote my answer ;D

np!

:D
jk, thanks for the upvote :)

Apparently British is a smaller language than American? Wot?
So. Freaking. Close. To. 2k.
And a question I answered/was accepted on Arqade is being featured! Amazing.

my rep is now 1336

3:11 AM
hmm, I asked a question through the app but didn't get the hat for that.. I guess it probably requires an upvote too :/

how do I see my total SE rep

@Virusboy 1337 :)

IM LEET!

3:51 AM
@Virusboy sounds to me like that question is actually a very broad one. Ultimately ending up with too many potential answers, maybe...
just sayin.
@Virusboy I was leet once.
Then i was 1666 and 2666 and 3666...
my evilness has increased since then >:)
next one i hit will probably be 13666 on Ask Ubuntu
SE wide, 15666 is next.

4:09 AM
well my attempt to answer my own question failed miserably :(

@Seth ?

@ThomasW. I couldn't figure the answer out!

4:39 AM
@Seth hahah, failure!
i got Selfie already though :)

5:27 AM
I want to support a CSS bug. Where do I do that? Is here good?

mm, what do you mean "support"?

report*
My bad.

ah. Report a CSS bug about the site or a package in Ubuntu then?

site

okie, the correct place would be Ask Ubuntu Meta then :)

5:29 AM
more of an error than a bug

what kind of error is it?

Just ask a question there then?

@Makaze Yep, that is how it works :)

Thanks.
Done.

I want to run an rss host on my webserver
is there an easy way to do that?
I'm hoping that will allow me to host my own podcasts to myself
does that sound rational?
I don't want to upload a whole bunch of videos to some podcasting host when I can just stream them from my home right

Q: mount: warning: /etc/mtab is not writable (e.g. read-only filesystem)

PaoloWorking on my system I noted that the root filesystem is mounted read-only. My system worked for months, today I get this error: mount: warning: /etc/mtab is not writable (e.g. read-only filesystem). Can you suggesting what to do? I wonder why the root partition was mounted read-only and how ...

9:49 AM
Running an rss stream is only half of it. You don't want to take the bandwidth to stream all that audio on your home network unless you have fiber or similar. Just saying.

@JoshuaRobison: I kinda do that
TTRSS isn't rocket science to run
@JoshuaRobison: Do you already have a web server running?
journeymangeek.com/index.php/… is my setup using lighttpd, php fpm and postgres
If you're running 14.04 the setup is a tiny bit different, use the instructions for 13.04

sup @JourneymanGeek
nice @YoungEminentBoss - but if you "strive" to be a boss, you won't be. people only listen to you because they believe in what you do.

Not much ;p

nothing interesting? i was looking for a positive distraction from something i'm working out here. need to not think about it so my subconscious takes over and it fixes itself.

Hi, any mod here?
I'd like to know why begueradj is suspended, if possible. He claimed that after deleting some of his bad questions, he got suspended by mod. There is a post on Meta SO
Well, I don't think I deserve to know. However, he probably reserve the right to know the reason.
Thank you.

4:07 PM
@AndrewT. I would suspect for swearing, he isn't suspended for long
Plus Google has some hits on some deleted stuff with choice words...

That was the weirdest thing ever.
My displays shut off and the computer completely froze. It wouldn't respond to pings and I couldn't SSH into it.
Even the reset and power buttons did absolutely nothing.
I had to use the switch on the back of the PSU to turn the stupid thing off and on.
I find it particularly strange that holding the power button didn't work. That has always worked before.

I had an issue where my internet connection killed itself, the terminal said everything that would normally say it works. But, when I rebooted the connection come how fixed it self.

9:07 PM
@NathanOsman I think I had some that did that to people(but computers that didn't have switches on the back) they said it was broke but when I got there or the pc got to me it worked perfectly fine
