12:00 AM
navy seal training mission?

Wasn't there a solution for anonymous file sharing like ... forever ago? It was called overlord if memory serves. You had to sync additional chunks of data other users needed to get what you wanted. So, the stuff on your box wasn't just what you wanted - it was what someone else wanted too. Add to that encrypted for just the final recipient and it seems like we downgraded to get bittorrent.

yes that idea was like 30 years old though, and when it was prusued, the big names of that era stopped it.

It was built, we just didn't have the bandwidth to run it. We do now.

we always had it
most of the best ideas we are now just seeing have been around since the 80's

Yeah, but people were on dialup in the 80s. Sort of makes me want to search for discarded apps to revive.

12:07 AM
but you could still network at faster than 56k.

Yeah, but then you'ld have had to run it somewhere much less common. Which would introduce a much smaller choke point and angry admins instead of home networks.

the idea really was to connect those networks like MANs are today

Oh, I know. I think some of the fail in America (my home) is that they try each and every bit of infrastructure. Where some countries (see Brazil) wait for a good one and leapfrog. Costs a LOT less in the grand scheme of things.
and now, somehow, we've gotten on to geopolitical finance

meh
just beat DNF, love it

I played it a little. Wasn't horribly impressed and moved on.

12:13 AM
you do realize the whole point of that game was to be all that and a bag of chips

Yes, but that's my goal in every shooter. ;)

this one actively promotes it though
Just like in 3D

Yeah, but there's no need to be any good at it to be all that etc.

pssh

Frankly I prefer Shadow Warrior and Blood to Duke forever. I'll take the fresh humor to the recycled from last time humor even with the poor graphics.

12:17 AM
yea some of the new elements did stand out as much
although his response to armor was amusing

There were moments that were funny, but it was mostly a repeat for me... so I stopped playing.
Speaking of, I think there's a market for "remakes" of older games as asset packs for new games with EXACTLY the same maps. Could be superfast to implement. It would cater to old game nostalgia, people that never played the old game, and studios that want a lower cost to develop.
Steam, or the $10-20 rack at Walmart seems like a REALLY profitable target for those types.

I saw they redid the gfx texture for Halo

Halo was fun. I liked that the mechanics stayed mostly the same throughout the series.
So, when I went to a friend's house who had "the newer one" and asked if I'ld already played... since I was half loaded I answered no. "Then don't start on medium" they said, "Play on easy" they said. 2 hours later "How many times has he died?" -- "He hasn't."

I did like that with Reach. "this isnt like the Mark 6 suits you know" "You should use those extras" Wait why do I need extras

Finally, someone that gets it.
I wanted to do the whole 2 hours in comment of "You do realize, I beat the last one on legendary full playthrough once dying a lot and once dying very few times right?"

12:29 AM
that would get them

Their heads would have exploded, so I just didn't say it.
In other news, I have a recent postulation...
Postulation:
Life is just a game.
I was really well off when I was younger.
At a certain point in my life, that changed drastically.
I had to learn Life game mechanics at about 26.
I think I'm about ready for my playthrough on medium difficulty 4 years later.
there was a 3 year gap where I didn't really try to learn anything... i just was

the terminal command are still the same

j0h
how do i specify the server version then?

I now have a neck-beard for a hat!
apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop

nice!
Getting downvotes is hard, that is somewhat of an accomplishment :)
I tried for Naruto, but I got 2 upvotes :/

j0h
Im ok with the desktop stuff being there, I just want the server kernel

Which I find ironic because I answered 3 questions the day hats started and didn't get any accepts or upvotes lol.

1:50 AM
@j0h if your using the terminla sudo apt-get distro-upgrade will pick server for you because you cannot upgrade a server with desktop

dlvxI've found several solutions to convert Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop to Server, with the following commands: sudo apt-get install tasksel sudo tasksel remove ubuntu-desktop sudo tasksel install server apt-get install linux-server linux-image-server apt-get –purge remove lightdm I just want to know if ...

j0h
OK Ill try that

that will remove the graphical part

@Seth it is hard even when you ask what the difference between 12.10 and 14.10

Q: Where can I find widgets for Unity?

VirusboyI want to class up my desktop with various widgets that tell me network bandwidth hdd usage during r/w and real time memory usage just to name a few. What a good way to go about that?

yes
i say unity for the sake of meta packages
Why did someone have to go a +1 me

ah, because you really wouldn't want to switch to kde for it's battery meter ;)

2:07 AM
Ive had KDE and hated it
but this was in Jacky

oh, you really need to try the new one then

can Unity and KDE be installed side by side

yeah, there might be a few packages that fight like the Plymouth theme...

Q: How To Install And Test KDE Plasma 5 On Ubuntu 14.04

Vishnudev KKDE Plasma 5 is hitting release candidate now: Schedules/Plasma 5 - KDE TechBase. How can I install plasma 5 in Ubuntu 14.04.

I think he edited after that comment

2:14 AM

that's a good thing actually, it shows we're voting!
Voting is important.

lol

man, i'm bored. found out i got a broken data pull from yahoo, so i'm resyncing everything now that i spot checked my last pull in progress.

Go hat hunting!

I'm crazy fixated at the moment... so that's a no-go, but good job on trying to get me more active on site.

2:44 AM
yeah, looks like screenlets work

screenlets? i haven't used them recently. they were more for when i had a super-nice rig and wanted to show off in screenshots. my perspective has changed a little.

afk till tomrrow

later on @Virusboy

one or two still look ok

2:49 AM
hahahahaha
that's so true too.

One of those things you find via that guy you sort of know because of that guy you sort of know that knew him.

I've heard people say that the definition of insanity is trying the same thing over and over again the same way and expecting a different result
^attempting to fix a Dell laptop

Dells are no fun :(

4:02 AM
@Seth Oh they're LOADS of fun. Especially when the the monitor connector resembles a slow-cooked pork brisket.

j0h
whats up with the Dell @Seth
@hbdgaf depressing

4:18 AM
@j0h drivers mainly.
I've fixed more Dells than any other type of computer.
@Richard Niiiiice.

Want to try running 2buntu on Docker? You can't beat this... launch a blank instance of the entire blog (complete with database) with one simple command:
docker run -d -e DEBUG=TRUE -p 8000:80 --name 2buntu 2buntu/blog

j0h
I updated from the Precise, to 14.04 server, and installed gnome desktop again!

Q: Is it fine to ask questions about boot errors from log files?

Ionică BizăuI'm looking into the log files and search for boot error messages. When I find an error I search it on the Internet. If I don't find any solution, is it fine to ask a question about how to fix it? I know that bug reports are off-topic on the site, but how far can I go into this side? Probably I...

4:26 PM
@hbdgaf when I found out there was a good chance most of it was funded by the goverment anyway.. I lost interest.

2 hours later…
6:26 PM
I need help reporting a bug

How come I got the solstice hat even though it isn't 12/21 UTC yet?

@Mateo_ - so I just reopened my linkedin. If you get a mail, it actually is me.
o/ @Lucio

An account with no password, after lock-screen, is requested to enter a password to login
^that is the bug under 14.10

They're trying to fix the keyring bug. It's not their fault.

who are they?

6:34 PM
The canonical people I would suppose.

@RohithMadhavan perfect

@Lucio You could probably select "This bug affects me". Isn't LightDM responsible for the lock screen? The bug report says gnome-screensaver.

done. not sure about that

@RohithMadhavan gnome-screensaver and/or unity-greeter I believe.

6:41 PM
@Seth Thanks for the clarification

$ cat /etc/X11/default-display-manager
/usr/sbin/lightdm

It changed in 14.04, so I can't quite remember which one manages it now.

It would be more intuitive if they'ld say "No matter what, if you have a keyring we need a password." on login. Even for passwordless. The deferred prompt made some people who aren't me a little irritated, and they cried a lot.

but it's one of those two. (lightDM/Unity-greeter or gnome-screensaver)
Apparently unity-greeter is just a theme for lightDM.
would test but bah, I'm stuck in Windows.

failsauce.

6:42 PM
... and I'm on Arch (GNOME) :-(

@hbdgaf amazing.

I liked it. I liked it a lot.

I would like that impressed

Anyone else got the solstice hat? It still isn't 12/21 UTC...

I just got it.

6:46 PM
@Lucio I've never been a fan of tiers of management. I've always been a fan of "We don't need twice as many people to direct. We need half as many people who are twice as good."

Hats are awarded with a 24 hour buffer for timezones.

@RohithMadhavan hats doesn't give a shit about UTC
sorry, had to say it.

@Lucio Another bug report? :-)

nahh :P

@Lucio you're fine buddy.
There needs to be a "make-it-green" project based around this python3wos.appspot.com

6:49 PM
@hbdgaf still translating the phrase

Oh, I never found a better way to say it.

take into account my stages:
1. Mentally translate it to Spanish
2. Ok
3. Now do the maths in spanish
4. Does it make sense?
5. No. Go back to point 1.

Wait, which bit are we talking about?

Management people, I guess

I had 3 things I thought you could mean... and that was none of them. If pre-edit you meant "executing phase-shift" I still wouldn't get it. So one of us needs a break. I'll assume it's me and take a break.

6:54 PM
heh, ok
@hbdgaf I will leave it like "a few smart people is enough"
@hbdgaf rails equivalent ready4rails4.net

7:46 PM
I finally did it! Before finish the year, here is my article about Twitter spam.
hope someone enjoys it :)

This is the best sentence in the article, hands down:
> "Interactions with real people is the key and there is no way you can buy them."
Well. Said.

you can lobbist do all the time
Man dat Naruto hat is a pain

8:02 PM
@Lucio Nice! I also hate the amount of spam (both accounts and tweets) on Twitter.
@Virusboy Try to answer a new user's question. They don't have enough rep to upvote.

VirusboyWhen you use mount, -r is a suffix syntax that returns as mounted read only. In order to do any writing to the disk you must not mount in read only. So when you type it out, it should say mount -o loop oldhd.img /mnt Also form a sourceforge fourm post Error code 2133571347 is "EXT2_ET_BAD_...

@Virusboy I also happen to be the fastest "Unsung Hero". Got it 15 days after joining :-)

I am sure that you'll get the Naruto, sooner or later

Time to experiment with this.

Q: Replace a line with string in a file if found / append to file if string was not found

frankI am looking for advise on how to search a part of a string within a file and replace the complete line OR append that string to that file if not found. I "played" with sed for a while now, but don´t get it to work as expected. Precise: I need to add /swapfile none swap sw 0 0 to ...

Guys.
HALP!
HELP HELP HELP HELP HELP
@Seth @Mateo_ @hbdgaf @JourneymanGeek I seriously need help
My system boots, but it just gives me a background and the mouse pointer. Never goes any further.

sounds like Unity or Ubuntu_Desktop is broke

Exactly
Problem is I can't get access to a terminal to fix it.
For whatever reason, my system doesn't display TTYs unless I've got the GRUB flag nomodeset, which screws up my GUI
Not even on the LiveUSB
Which I'm on right now

do a terminal command gparted

k
What now?

post a screenie of what it shows

10:40 PM

ok hold on

SSD & HDD. root is on SSD (/dev/sda)

your root OS disk should look simliar to mine

Sooo
Can I use chroot to reinstall Ubuntu-desktop & unity?

you need to have a uefi boot part first off
and chroot would be pointless becuase you are already root

10:49 PM
I should, not sure why it's showing up as FAT32

it should
is sda 1 your boot part?

Isn't there a way I could run commands as if I was running them from my booted PC? I thought that was what chroot did
@Virusboy I believe so...

you could chroot your ./
for where ever you put /home in
but instead it would be sda*
but like I said Live CD should already allow that operation by mearly logging in

@RPi_Awesomeness can you get to tty

he said he couldnt @mateo_
there are screenies of gparted but how its setup is bothering me

10:55 PM
Yeah, I think he put home on a separate drive

it has mount points at media instead of dev
@RPi_Awesomeness what are the flags of those partitions
I cant see all of it

might have to ssh into his pc
he's got swap and something on one drive and what i think is boot and two other parts on the other
WHat were you doing last before this happened

I think it lost part of where things were at, he lost the downloaded steam games

thats a new one then

11:09 PM
k, I'm back
networking stuff
@Mateo_ I did
@Virusboy I've got SWAP + Home on one & Boot + Root + 40GB random on SSD

shouldnt home and root be on the same part?

11:28 PM
@NathanOsman thank you :-)

oh, what a hat!

11:40 PM
@Virusboy @Mateo_ I'm back, had to leave suddenly
@Virusboy I made them separate because I wanted the boot partition on the SSD for speed and the home on the HDD because it's mass storage

you could just make ubuntu on the ssd and the data on the hdd

I would put home on the SSD for speed..

I also don't want SWAP on the SSD - that's just bad
@Chan-HoSuh But it's only 240GB

hey guys

Ugh. Why do things like this have to happen :P I've rebooted plenty of times without an issue and now it's nuked my system :P

11:42 PM
a friend of mine has problem with a bootable usb
in the one laptop ubuntu runs normaly

that's why I don't like servers being rebooted at work...

but in the second he sees a black screen with minimal bash message and waits command

@Mateo_ I have a TTY now!

can you help?

What's the message?

11:46 PM
@RPi_Awesomeness me?

Just got back. You have it working now?

it says grub>
and waits command

I meant @RPi_Awesomeness. I'll grab that post in a sec.
