@Seth lol @ broadcom assumption xD
@Seth fortunately that's NOT the issue xD

no kidding lol. I just guessed 'cause it was Dell.
@RPiAwesomeness yeah

dangit. I keep finishing up my new user post reviews right after they reset.

@Seth Dell's Inspiron 15R Special Edition had an Intel card
and was all hardware-certified for 12.04

@RPiAwesomeness haha. That's so annoying.

which was a huge bargaining point for this laptop specifically being purchased :P
@Seth also your suggestion does not work :/

4:03 AM
:-/

I KNOW! Wish I had the 2K rep for some more of the review queues...

@ThomasW. Do you know how turning the wifi off works?

@Seth On this machine? No.
I'm still breaking it in :)

hmm

@Seth I'm still surprised that this happens on this system, none of the other systems I've used with similar cards has ever had this issue
@Seth and even from on to off, it does something that soft-blocks the wifi
and i have to rfkill unblock 0 (which is the consistently-the-same interface number) to unblock the wifi
(hardblock shows "yes" when disabled by switch)

4:07 AM
hmm...reading over this: askubuntu.com/questions/6263/…...
Might have to look into putting this on an iPad 1...
anyone have any idea if it would work?
or even be usable?
or legal

I don't know on all points.
@ThomasW. What interface is your wireless on?

@Seth "interface" as in the code that i put into ifconfig when referring to the interface?
wlan0

@ThomasW. yes

@Seth wlan0
oh god

?

4:20 AM
@Seth @Lucio guess who's here >.>

@ThomasW.'s is a-burnin
Oh god is right...

@ThomasW. in the room?

@ThomasW. :D

@Seth Yes.

EEP!
/me is a plant! I'm gonna freaking die!

4:21 AM
@ThomasW. just ignore it.

The un-mentionable OS has arrived

@ThomasW. Any idea where I could get the iwlwifi kernel module's source code?

@Seth no idea

hmmm

make sure to grab for the .... um...
@Seth how do I grab the kernel version

4:23 AM
uname -a

shouldn't intel drivers be in the kernel tree?

@Seth Linux new-gallifrey 3.8.0-35-generic #50~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Wed Dec 4 17:25:51 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

@ThomasW.: just curious - why do you need it?

so I guess 3.8.0 kernels

Q: When turning on/off wifi, wifi is "soft blocked", any way to automatically run `rfkill unblock`?

Thomas W.So, on this Dell Inspiron 7520, which is hardware-certified for 12.04, when I use the function keys to turn off/on the wifi, the wifi will "turn on" but be soft blocked. Running rfkill unblock [interfacenumber] does correctly unblock the device. Is there a way for the system to automatically ru...

4:24 AM
@JourneymanGeek ask @Seth, he needs the code for iwlwifi apparently

/me is researching.

ahh right

@JourneymanGeek having said this I just want to automate the rfkill unblock process when I turn on the wifi with the hardware buttons
if possible.

I know how to do that, but the hard part is making the key block and unblock alternately

Q: Is the freezing bug fixed in 13.10?

user233009I used to have 12.04 which freezes at login. All I can do is hold down the power button. Is that pached in 13.10?

bit unclear...
No clue which bug (if any official bug) he is talking about...etc.

4:26 AM
well I gotta go for now.

is missing the links to doing it on Linux and Ubuntu...just ping commented @Braiam...

@Seth me too
ciao

@ThomasW. Oh, got a CM to delete the answer. He wants our mods to handle the comments though, since it's calmed down.

Q: No HDMI audio in 13.04

King84I have just upgraded from 12.10 to 13.04 and now everything works perfectly, except the fact that I have no audio via HDMI. Q: Which library files are needed to run a binary with an alternate libc version?

NickI built Firefox 26 on Mint 16 because the Ubuntu 10.04 build utilities are too old to build it. It does need to run on 10.04, however, since that's the target OS I'm building for. It built and runs just fine on Mint 16. When moving the package over to 10.04 and attempting to run, I get errors be...

@fossfreedom why my answer was deleted in askubuntu.com/questions/401330/…

@AvinashRaj let me look...
because you answered a question about how to install wine - whereas the user was specifically asking about installing itunes - the dupe explains that its a waste of time and pointing the OP in that direction.

see that question he was trying to install itunes "iTunesSetup.exe" which was an exe file.so i help him to install wine first and then double click on that exe file.
will make him to install itunes.

yes - he is installing itunes - and the dupe explains don't do it.
If you really have an answer that covers installing wine, configuring the various DLLs and stuff for the wine bottle and then covering itunes installation - that answer belongs on the dupe.

@fossfreedom thnx for your clarification.

Big news everyone. CentOS joins hands with Red Hat.

Seriously?
Well

jrg
well, to put it into context, they didn't do that as much as they said "Standards bro!"

I don't think it is possible for RH to plant their employees and steer it for their benefit. :P

@jokerdino: I was under the impression centos was rhel
with nearly no non branding mods

jrg
@JourneymanGeek yes and no
yes, you are correct from a technical view

1:47 PM
@JourneymanGeek It really was. They rebranded RHEL but had no paid support.

jrg
no, it isn't. CentOS devs tend to not work for RH.

It was free.

jrg
(at least, not anymore)

@jrg The news is that, five of the devs started their day job at RH but not for RHEL.

1:47 PM
@jrg you mean not before

iirc its still free

jrg
Nuance. but yes.
Yes, and it forever shall be.

they arn't locking repos behind a paywall, are they?

jrg
No.

@JourneymanGeek no

jrg
1:48 PM
hell has not frozen over.

what this really means is that RH can keep pissing off oracle without screwing over centos ;p

jrg
Yup!
redhat.com/about/news/press-archive/2014/1/… | This press release is full of a unusually low amount of bs.

I think that really was the idea.

jrg
innovation is for fedora, enterprise is for RHEL, and centos is for everyone else who is too cheap actually has to stay inside a budget.

jrg
1:51 PM
explain to me how my logic is flawed.

In every sense of the word cheap?

jrg
we priced RHEL. ouch.

@jokerdino: pretty much ;p

Guys, anyone know how to apply patches to upstream linux kernel? Need some hand-holding to troubleshoot a bug related to bluetooth...

ooo...bugs. No fun

2:04 PM
@Aditya do you have the patch?

patch is available... git repo is updated... but need some hand-holding from someone who has done this before...
@Braiam yes
Let me give you a brief summary..

I mean, you have a patch file?

Q: IMPORTANT someone hacked my account, reverse anything made by me!

nixveloperIt's since yesterday i couldn't access my account. I also saw he made posts on my behalve..I think it was caused by a bad password (just 4 chars). Please reverse any bad edit done by me and delete any post here on meta. I apologize for everything, had i chosen a better password this wouldn't happ...

@Braiam Yes.. it is available here: bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60824#c6

Wha....
Being hacked is never fun

A: How to apply `git diff` patch without Git installed?

Andrey Kouznetsovgit diff > patchfile and patch -p1 < patchfile work but as many people noticed in comments and other answers patch does not understand adds, deletes and renames. There is no option but git apply patchfile if you need handle file adds, deletes and renames.

it should be impossible to just use a 4 digit password..

you don't need git..
@AskUbuntuMeta btw, 4 chars is not allowed by any of SE or openid...

@Braiam I have the repo updated... but let me go through that SO question..

I doubt he was hacked still posting stupid questions..

I actually need some hand-holding... compiling the kernel takes way too-much time on my machine and I often find myself in a situation that after getting it compiled and installing the debs, my system refuses to boot... Moreover, it generates deb files which are more than 750MB...
@Braiam: Have you ever applied the patches before?

2:11 PM
let me put this way, you have this and the sources tree...
@Aditya of course, not to the kernel tho... (never in the need to)
if you do ls include/net/bluetooth/bluetooth.h and it returns ok, then you are in the right place

yes.. by sources tree i mean I have an updated git repo of git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git

then the only thing is doing patch -p1 < patchfile and done
you want to apply to the git repo?
is the same...

@Braiam won't i need to change branches and stuff like that..

nope...
why?

the patch was made about 3 months ago... and the repo is updated till today..

jrg
2:13 PM
git is smart
git doesn't just keep track of files
when properly done, git will keep track of methods and individual code chunks, even as they migrate across the files.

> What is preventing the patch to be merged? Without this, the Bluetooth dongle doesn't work.
the patch seems not being merged in the sources

yes... the patch hasn't been merged as of yet
I don't know why... but i have this fear that the next 3-4 hours are going to be wasted

just put yourself in the source tree, then do patch -p1 < patchfile and done...

@Braiam ok.. then let me try it
$ patch -p1 < ~/Desktop/bluetooth.patch

patching file include/net/bluetooth/bluetooth.h
Hunk #1 succeeded at 273 (offset 8 lines).
patching file include/net/bluetooth/hci_core.h
Hunk #1 succeeded at 1030 (offset -54 lines).
patching file net/bluetooth/hci_core.c
Hunk #1 succeeded at 726 (offset 581 lines).
Hunk #2 succeeded at 1267 (offset 661 lines).
Hunk #3 succeeded at 3414 (offset 740 lines).
Hunk #4 succeeded at 3439 (offset 740 lines).
Hunk #5 succeeded at 3447 (offset 740 lines).
Hunk #6 succeeded at 4165 (offset 734 lines).

@Aditya the patch should looks like this
yeah, that's fine...

2:18 PM
Is it done?

jrg
yup.

yup

wow

jrg
now do your make, make install and all that fun stuff.

ok.. feeling excited

2:19 PM
@jrg make deb!
is the kernel D:

jrg
oh yes, checkinstall
use checkinstall
don't use make install, use checkinstall. just... otherwise problems happen.

@Braiam but my deb files generated are about 750 MB... is that normal?

jrg
yup

@jrg ??? any guide on the internet

@Aditya yeah...

jrg
2:20 PM
it isn't a optimized kernel.

jrg
the debian docs are probably better

thank you guys... but then why are the kernel updates that we get from Ubuntu are only about 60 MB if 750 MB is normal when we compile ourselves?

jrg
because ubuntu splits things out into individual packages and kernel module packages
whereas that just lumped them all together
ubuntu doesn't install the entire git.kernel.org/linus codebase

that went over my head.. :)

jrg
2:23 PM
what you just did
is you made a .deb of the entire kernel
everything.
but the kernel is made up of many smaller parts
and ubuntu (and most linux distros) split the smaller parts out
because not everyone needs them
for example, my netbook didn't have bluetooth. it didn't install the bluetooth modules by default.

@Aditya make sure that with the make xconfig you select all the modules you need ;)

jrg
or my netbook didn't have a backlight keyboard. kernel modules weren't loaded.
whereas you are install EVERYTHING.

@Braiam Let me introduce myself... I am a complete newbie and this is the first bug in Ubuntu which I am trying to troubleshoot... I just don't know much about these stuff... :)
@jrg: I think I am understanding things...
But then.... the updates for kernel given by ubuntu - are they different and optimized for all the sections of users

jrg
Yes.

@Aditya if you are unsure what options to tweak try this serverfault.com/a/51059/180142

2:27 PM
@jrg a rough guess of how many sections/groups of users?

jrg
@Aditya lots.

@jrg I mean there are 1000s of combinations.... there must be some limit.... any idea about it or a range which you think should be right..

jrg
@Aditya Virtually infinite combinations
let me sketch something, and upload it
so it'll make sense

@jrg hehe..

jrg
nope, i can't sketch worth a damn.
basically, the system says "Oh, you have bluetooth. that means you need to install kernel-bluetooth" (or whatever)

2:31 PM
@Braiam i have got a lot of links to read... would surely go through it as well... thanks :)

jrg
or it says "Oh, you haz broadcom. install alsdkjflkasdjfklj-broadcom"
but it doesn't install broadcom, intel, nvidia, realtek, ralink, and all the other ones by default.
BUT, what you just did was make a package that wasn't split up into a bajillion little pieces.
so that's why it's so big.

but the kernel-updates come as 4-5 deb files consolidated... does ubuntu consolidate it on server-side and only includes the modules appropriate for my system - ie; for every user?

jrg
no.
only some portions of the "kernel" get updated
so there is mainline kernel - that's the core.
and then there are kernel extensions, which is what most people think of when they think "Linux Kernel"

@jrg mainline kernel is what is available at kernel.org... isn't it? just a name which indicates that the original source is Linus Torvalds and not modified by someone else...

jrg
@Aditya it's even more specific than that.
it's a specific subset of the stuff from kernel.org

2:37 PM
What do you guys see at this link? -- html2markdown.com

@jrg okay... i would need to do a bit of reading on this stuff to understand this properly.. :-)

I get some Thai development site.

jrg
a stock photo of a baby

OK. For a sec, I was scared my DNS is poisoned.

@jokerdino parking

jrg
2:38 PM
it's a 404 page of a stock baby photo in Thai.

huh

@jrg @jokerdino @Braiam what are you all guys saying...

jrg
@jokerdino but it actually returns a 403 forbidden, not a 404.

I need a converter. :/

jrg

2:39 PM
yay

jrg
same people

Windows 8....

@jrg It's available for me..

jrg
@Aditya Do you get the markdown converter?

2:41 PM
Too scary...

@jrg yes.. let me take a screenshot

Are you not on Linux @Aditya?

@jokerdino i am using ubuntu

I am on Fedora, Braiam on Debian and guess jrg on Windows 8.

jrg
Nope. Ubuntu.

2:43 PM

jrg
I finally finished the windows8 project @ work.
@Aditya guess that means it's still working its way through the internet.

@jrg doesn't a hard refresh work for you guys..

jrg
@Aditya nope.

@jokerdino im on windows 7

Ubuntu 13.10. And when Trusty thar is out, I will be sticking with it, till the next LTS

jrg
2:53 PM
I said that with 12.04. Didn't happen. :P

That's a brutal decision.
