Q: How do I develop an Ubuntu applicatin in HTML and JS?

pavolzetorI am developing an app and I think HTML and JavaScript are better for the future, but I cannot find any tutorials (I need the app to use the system theme). Are there bindings for Unity, message menu and notification, couchdb and so on?

Sorta..

It needs python, if I am not wrong.

That has python..

@jokerdino That specifically addresses how to install the latest versions. I'm not sure the OP here actually wants to do that. I think he downloaded files from sourceforge because that's how he's used to installing software on Windows. From the question: "I am accustomed to downloading software, saving it, and merely clicking on it and voila it is installed."

Although whether it's what he wants or not I don't know.

Is like a browser embedded app

5:04 PM
@EliahKagan Clamav is in the repos...

Although, I don't like WebKit..

So is clamtk

@Seth Right. I really seem to remember at least one question where someone asked how to install it and it was answered that way. It's not that this question is difficult to answer, it's just that I suspect it's been answered before.

@EliahKagan I've edited the comment.

@EliahKagan Should I answer it?

5:09 PM
Hm, vendorcode is blacklisted.
Hoorays

@Seth I'm not agree with that edit

@Lucio Why not?
He clearly says he doesn't want Webkit and the other answers all use Webkit.

The other question is receiving Webkit and not webkit answers, no one of the post is specialized

@jokerdino Yipee!

@Seth That mean that there is no other method

5:10 PM
@Lucio Show me which answers aren't webkit please.

@Seth Show me how can you do that without using webkit please?

The last two answers sorta kinda don't..

Quick list of tags to kill?

@Lucio Exactly why this is a different question.
@jokerdino

I lost my list. :(

5:12 PM
If you can handle those that would be awesome.
Esp. .

@Seth That is a perfect dupe, because the answer aren't questions.

i did mention. I got the black-screen to be handled.

@Lucio Well that's true I guess..

@Seth If we don't already have a question for it, then yeah, I guess it should be answered. I recommend making reference at least to installation from packages in official Ubuntu repositories, and to installing from SourceForge with reference to that related question and the instructions it links to. But I'm not entirely sure what the question is asking (see my comment).

So the OP should start a bounty.
1
A: Can we *please* blacklist the error tag?

Shog9No tags ending in error or errors are allowed now. Those that existed have been removed.

\o/

5:14 PM
My point is, Where you see mentioned Webkit in the first answer? There is no mention about it.

\o/

@Seth answered 42 secs ago
:D

@Lucio Yep :D
First answer:
> Depending on what you are trying to do, you could just build the app like any HTML + JS app and then throw it into a Webkit view. It's extremely simple to do in python:

@Seth crash gone

Whoopee!
Lots of stuff happening today.
I bet it was Shog that blacklisted that stuff today too.

5:17 PM
Yes.
black-screen dead.

Someone has been in the secret mod room :P
@EliahKagan I'll try to write an answer up later today.
I've really got to focus now.
I'll be here but won't be saying much.

1
A: What to do with black-screen tag?

Shog9Burned and blacklisted - both black and black-screen. Please care for the widows and orphans.

@Seth Thx. Maybe the OP will clarify further by then, too. If they want to install the version they got from SourceForge, it can just be duped to this.

Lots of color on meta now :P

LOL yep.

5:42 PM
This is a real question (though more hardware information might be useful). But should we just consider this a bug and close it as off-topic?

Q: Touchscreen moves in opposite direction

user143561Issue for touchscreen: Up moves Up Down moves Down Left moves Right Right moves Left Anyone know a fix?

NARQ.
What touchscreen?
For Ubuntu?
Ubuntu Touch?
Could even be android..
Hardware info?
@EliahKagan We can't reasonably close it as a bug since we don't even know what platform this is on..

@Seth Is there a platform where where that would not be a bug?

It could be a driver or collaboration issue.

Hm, I can ban someone from reviewing. Interesting.

O_O

5:49 PM
I can ban myself. Mwuaha

Q: Can't drag and drop in Qt Creator

Ryan MullerI recently installed the system upgrades for my Ubuntu distro (12.10). Since the upgrades, I can't drag and drop items in Qt Creator. I found a solution that requires editing of xorg.conf. My system has no /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. I tried on a previous install to copy-paste a sample xorg.conf a...

This question IMO is still a dupe. The master question linked to near the top of your question answers why Ubuntu boots fast. If you want a comparison of why Ubuntu boots fast in relation to Windows this is the wrong site. Super User might accept such a question however. If you feel the answers to the other question are outdated add a bounty. If you want an answer based on your individual specs than this is "not constructive" or "too localized" as we don't tailor to individual users like that. — Seth 1 min ago
@EliahKagan Does that look OK --^ ?

@Seth From a copy-editing perspective, yes. But I'm not sure it's true that a question about why Ubuntu boots fast in relation to Windows is off-topic for our site. The reason I think that question would probably be off-topic (to the extent to which it is asking about that) is that it doesn't give any numbers or citations for anything.
Since Ubuntu does not actually always boot faster than Windows, it's unclear what it's asking, and it hasn't identified what verifiable phenomena it's asking to be explained.

@EliahKagan +1

@EliahKagan I think it would be because we then get into the hows and whys of Windows boots.
I said he could bring it up on meta if need be...
So we'll probably hear more about it.

5:55 PM
@Seth btw my ubuntu always boots in 30 seconds (fresh or old install), windows loeads in 10 seconds!

@Alvar Huh. My Windows boots in 5 minutes.. Ubuntu in about 40 seconds.

@Seth I think the question would be too localized...
@Seth reinstall your windows!

@Alvar Planning on it....

@Seth hehe, it was actually way easier to install win 7 than win xp :)
win xp restarted the installation if you didn't eject the cd within 10 seconds :S

@Alvar Yes. it. is. I had to reinstall XP to upgrade to 8.. That was a nightmare.

5:57 PM
@Seth LOL

Did I mention my install disks didn't have SP3?
I Windows 8 needs SP3 to upgrade

@Seth ok

I had to manually download and install all sorts of updates so that XP would let SP3 install...

I only run win 7. Win 8 looks like a new win vista..

@Alvar Well, it's not. Ease of use and stability wise.
Anyway.. I got work to do..
I'll be sorta around.

5:59 PM
@Seth well win 7 has never crashed for me :P

Kinda sorta around..
@Alvar Lucky.

@jokerdino Rather.

6:19 PM
@Seth FYI, UTT is in raring repo.

@jokerdino Unity Tweak Tool? Cool.

@EliahKagan yessir.

@jokerdino It's in Quantal too isn't it?
I see it.
But then, that might be my PPA.

Not in quantal yet. I need to get it backported.

@jokerdino Is there a backport request filed?

6:21 PM
No. I am waiting for the next version to make it to raring. Then I can start the paperwork for backporting.

okay. got the oauth to login.ubuntu.com part working. on to syncing settings with u1db (hopefully)

So PPA stuff shows in the software center?

@Seth i think so.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing What are we talking about?
@jokerdino That explains it.

@Seth I believe it does, provided that the PPA is enabled.

6:22 PM
@AbrahamVanHelpsing nice.
could borrow your work for syncing over u1.

@Seth podcatcher that syncs across devices/os-es so you can track your podcasts on linux, android, and windows over U1

I wish Code Academy had a bash course...
@AbrahamVanHelpsing Oh that's cool!

Trust me - you don't want to learn Bash :P

@Seth I used TLCL.pdf

I'd even go as far as to say I'd use Perl over Bash.

6:23 PM
anybody here ever installed gitolite on ubuntu server?

I love that.

@jokerdino No, as I don't use Unity much anymore.

@stewbydoo Not in the repos I take it?

@EliahKagan Makes perfect sense.

6:25 PM
@jokerdino there so needs to be a trivial or non-trivial example on the ubuntu cookbook page - for syncing settings from u1 that is

@Seth hello

@AbrahamVanHelpsing I think u1 is still a moving target. Much like ubuntu.

@Mitch I don't see why. They're different questions. Potentially some answers might overlap, but at least one explicitly does not.

@Seth the repo for gitolite?

@EliahKagan OK.

@jokerdino that's fair. still, python is pretty universal and most of the u1 stuff has python or rest wrappers

@stewbydoo No sorry. An official Ubuntu repo.
@Mitch Might leave a comment though.
It should still be helpful.

@AbrahamVanHelpsing yeah. in the case of UTT, we are syncing the settings of the system.

it would be easier to just email the config/import/export, but that would lack finesse and require more user interaction

In software sources you see all the sources your computer checks for software.
Where is the file that contains this information?

6:36 PM
sources.lst?

I think it's called like sources.list or something similar.
@jokerdino Yeah that's it I think.

wow, someone just asked me the same question yesterday.

How long does a flag stay disputed?

disputed is pretty final.

6:42 PM
@Mitch Disputed doesn't mean that it's "currently in dispute." It means at least one user marked the flag invalid through the 10k tools.

Aha, That's good to know.. Thanks

Q: What is a disputed flag?

AlvarMarco Ceppi just told me that moderators can't dispute flags, and I would like to know who can and what is it for? If moderators can't use it who can? for an example I have 8 disputed flags.

Q: Do I need to do anything when a flag I raise is listed as disputed?

vasa1In my flagging history, the summary lists four "moderator attention flags" as disputed. Do I need to do anything? Even if I don't have to do anything, what is the basis of a "disputed flag"?

@EliahKagan Thanks.

Has anyone noticed that Meta AU and Meta SO look identical on mobile?

I dont mobile.

Kinda weird I guess.
'course now that I think about it.. all of the mobile sites look the same.

@EliahKagan the way you helped "George" in this question and refused to take credit is very impressing. :) askubuntu.com/questions/271637/…

Speaking of that, the OP made a revision that asks a new (but related) question.

Does anyone know the HTML entity for large quotes?

Large quotes?
One of these dbaron.org/www/quotes ?

“ and ” IIRC
but as I always just type them in, I never use the HTML entities

@GeorgeEdison This list might help: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…

7:21 PM
Actually, maybe I'm going about this the wrong way. What I'm really trying to do is create a quotation in LibreOffice with a large opening quotation mark to the left of the paragraph.

Ah, the really BIG ones?
I don't know where you'd find those...
@GeorgeEdison This looks pretty helpful: juude.info/css-gigantic-quote-marks.php
But I'm not sure it would work in LO.

Ah, I think I got it now.
For future reference, it's Format->Paragraph->Drop Caps.

askubuntu.com/questions/272768/… is this question a good fit here? I'm not sure if I should flag it or not
"disadvantages and advantages", quite an open ended question

@JenniferWilson Yeah I'm not sure if that's constructive. I'm also not sure if it's on-topic for Ask Ubuntu (I've commented to request information from the OP that may clarify that).

Thanks =]

7:31 PM
Uhm... did somebody delete my comment on this answer?

@jokerdino - on the replicating configs, i'm thinking the u1 rest file storage api is going to be better than the u1db api for cross-platform use
@GeorgeEdison i hadn't seen a you comment on that one.
Question. Does anyone know why this: code.launchpad.net/~jdobrien/restful-u1/trunk isn't in a proper repo as a python package?

@Seth spiffy

@GeorgeEdison Its not there anymore for sure.
Probably got flagged as "too chatty"

@Seth could it be delete after the migration?

@Lucio No, 'cause I saw it on meta earlier.

7:44 PM
Then, too chatty is the most probably
@GeorgeEdison Too chatty man!
:P

nope.

You are actually the poorest man in existence because all you have are these worthless bitcoins.
Don't you see? I've flooded the market and ruined it.

actually because nobody is aware the market is flooded, :P
besides there's a hard limit on the number of bitcoins
i forget what it is.

Well whoever invented bitcoins really ruined their chances of world dominance.
Since the world has now hit the hard limit of bitcoins all the extra are turned into NULL.
Whence I took them in the first place.
If there was an unlimited amount of bitcoins in existence they could manipulate the economy... oh well.

last i checked the limit hadn't been hit yet

8:59 PM
Didn't I just hit it?

did you?
i haven't actually received the bitcoins so no.

it's possible to have a LCD monitor with funky colors
although that's more of a VGA problem, not a LCD
if you unplug a VGA cable weirdly, then it will lose the blue/green/red channels and be funky colors.
