@DanHulme: I consider RMS a bit of the extreme fringe of FOSS, despite (maybe because) of the influence he's had through and with gnu. Amusingly his issues seem to be with non free codecs, other than what I'd have expected to be his problem
I really like a system where people don't intentionally make me jump through hoops to get something working for ideological reasons

@JourneymanGeek Do you have a question on SU on how to SSH into an Ubuntu box from Windows? I'd like to play around with SSH but only have one Unix computer.
I could probably figure it out myself.. but a Q/A would be nice :)

@Seth: no, probably cause its too trivial ;p
do you need X forwarding or not?

jrg
@AbrahamVanHelpsing sure, why not?
@Seth putty

@JourneymanGeek I'd think not. I don't plan on doing anything big. Just tinker.

if no x, step one, install putty.
there is no step 2

12:13 AM
@jrg I didn't think that was free...
Ah, looks like it is.

@Seth: free as in beer, speech, and ubuntu ;p

lol.
That's what I get for not looking it up ;P

if you want a slightly more full fat ssh client/terminal emulator for windows I like mobaxterm.mobatek.net
@Seth: yeah, its really that simple ;p
but putty is what I use every day (almost) to access my raspi and vpses

Thanks @JourneymanGeek.

I did find this though:

Q: how can i set up ssh on home network from windows 7 to linux?

barrristaI have a windows 7 machine and a linux machine. I want to SSH from windows to linux. How would I set this up if both are connected to my router at home? Would there be any changes necessary if I left my linux machine at home but took my windows machine with me to starbucks? SO FAR I'VE installed...

jrg
12:37 AM
@lazyPower nice. :-)
@lazyPower was in a cave.

@jrg i was trying to think in advance so it could run on OSX... there's no client there, but i don't see why an app couldn't use the api anyway.

yes.
For meta I'm talking about this: askubuntu.com/questions/271975/…
It's a strange question to ask here... Being a Windows only issue.

I think SU would be a better fit, personally

I agree.

I'll do it

Thanks :)
Between AU meta and MSO I'm kind meta'ed out for now.

9:43 AM
Hi... Anyone using Raring at the moment?

Nope. Maybe tonight, depending on how things turn out.

I installed it yesterday... works quite well
uses 15% lesser memory than 12.10
however, noticed a strange issue... when I run sudo apt-get update it tends to fetch the complete index files (not the diffs)
about 13+MB of data against 0.9MB in Quantal

@Aditya that's not unusual - all dev releases do this.

@JourneymanGeek HIs (and GNU's) policy of not accepting patches without copyright assignment is pretty broken, even if you understand the reason for it.

9:46 AM
@fossfreedom oh... I thought so
But what's the logic

@Aditya they need to do this because of the high-quantity of package updates - need to ensure systems are kept updated correctly.

@fossfreedom so, using diffs create some sort of trouble?
I tend to sometimes take my backup through rsync - should I be worried?

logically - yes - multiple updates for the same package sometimes on the same day.
no - no worries - just make sure you dont exceed your broadband cap :)

okay... thanks

10:00 AM
@DanHulme Oh, I can understand that. Its just the my way or YOU ARE EVIL AND NEED TO ROT IN HELL YOU B****** way attitude...

how do you wash silk pillowcases, anyway?

@DanHulme You rub them vigorously with a napkin.

Do we have a question about how to set up a localhost Development Server (on Ubuntu Desktop) - not open to outside world? (answered with step-by-step instructions for dummies)
I can't seem to find one

You should never asssume localhost and always assume it will be set open to the world and set it up accordingly. Nothing worse than fixing permissions afterwards..
But that's just me :=)

10:43 AM
@Rinzwind I don't have much knowledge about stuff... Would like to setup one for playing with wordpress, setting up forums, etc.... (I don't want anyone else to be able to access it)

ok but then again: it is easier to install lamp and put your user in the www-data group. That's all.

Won't I have to make any further changes.... with regards to closing it for outside world

sorry browser wanted to quit
@Aditya nope.
Well not really :-)

I had installed LAMP about a few days back on 12.10, but I was able to access it by entering my IP in the browser
I don't know I might have entered some wrong permissions
I was following all the tutorials from all over the web

ofcourse but if you do that from the outside it will not

10:49 AM
@Rinzwind oh...
and I got worried that I opened my box for the whole world

well unless you told it to be able to :D :D

Now onwards I don't seem to trust content outside SE Network
do you know any trustworthy tutorials which would help me

Samsung UEFI brick topic from a fews weeks back is getting a kernel patch
@Aditya for what? lamp?

@Rinzwind yes

10:54 AM
@Rinzwind Looks good... I would try it... Thanks :-)

yeah it also deals with virtual setup
only thing I miss is to add a user to the group www-data.

@Rinzwind Is virtual host same as virtualenv for python?

VH are the definition of separate websites on 1 system
so you can use separate URL's to access them

I didn't get it completely... something like http://localhost1. http://localhost2 ....

11:02 AM
So, if I use the VH method to setup the environment.... will I be able to create localhost/site1 and localhost/site2 ... or will I be restricted to just 1 site localhost/site1?

you can use as many as you want.

Thanks... I guess I would have to read a lot of stuff... :-)

we have around 10 of those virtual hosts
and named them like this:
http://site1.domain.nl
http://site2.domain.nl
you do that in the "ServerAlias" tag in a file in /etc/apache2/sites-available

I don't understand it completely... But I would search around google to find the answers... Thanks for your time... :)

11:08 AM
Yes... I was reading that article and when the topic of Virtual Hosts came I became puzzled...

naaaa it's not complicated at all :=) you can do it!

11:23 AM
@fossfreedom, I was reading LXDE/XFCE Hybrid with much interest. I may want to replace PCManFM with Thunar. Is the information there current for 12.10 and the versions of PCManFM and Thunar presently in the standard repos?

He went into hiding :=)

@Rinzwind the beauty of XFCE and LXDE are that they change very-very slowly ... so - should be still relevant :)

yeah but the thing is... I can not see a reason to use "beauty" with "xfce" in the same sentence and still be positive about it >:D
OSes with a start on the bottom suck anyways >:D

heh! - just need a decent theme.
@Rinzwind move the panel to the top then!

lol
ok just for you I am going to try xfce :=)

11:28 AM
vanilla xfce sucks ... I love what the lubuntu guys do - very nice polish.

ok fossy where is the default answer for ubuntu+1 problems?

@Seth nope. I'd be getting a candy bar phone.

A: Broken links inside Linux header file folder

RinzwindThe command should be apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -a) $(uname -a) will automatically be changed to the kernel release name. You can remove the directory itself with cd /usr/src && sudo rm -rf "linux-headers-uname -r" It is best to use somewhere after typing linux-hea...

if this delete correct?

12:58 PM
@Rinzwind I don't think they ran the wrong command. If you look at the actual text they wrote in the question, they have used backticks only around uname -r. They probably wrote these same backticks in the command they ran. Backticks around something have the same effect as enclosing it in $().
So they should not remove the directory; as far as I can tell, the directory they made is correctly named.

AH
I did not see backticks in the post itself

Also, you have uname -a rather than uname -r in a command in your answer. uname -a gives too much information to include in backticks or $() to generate a package name.

@JourneymanGeek that's what I did.
@TheoneManis jekyll?
as in the ruby library?

jrg
yeah
that's what i use for my blog.
as does Jorge Castro.

@jrg So, maybe you have a clue with my problem (found the solution, but want to know the reason)
I just ran the 'jekyll' command, and my site was re/generated just fine. But in the process, I command-line output these errors: pastebin.com/MuwCDeHj (see lines 5-8) And then, I tried setting server: false in my _config.yml and that fixed it.
@jrg any idea why that fixes it?
nevermind, just came to know that it's a bug: stackoverflow.com/a/15620082/1071413

jrg

InkBlendA little while ago I asked a question (Should I flag comments such as “I agree”, “+1 for x”, or “I changed x in my post”?) about if certain kinds of comments were to be flagged as useless, and got told that I should just flag it if it did not contribute to the question/answer. @AbrahamVanHelpsing VCDs don't support region coding, do they?

maybe missing a lib for pal or ntsc conversion or something...

7:24 PM
@Seth he's got 2 pwd protected files >:)

@mateo_salta: Sadly, I don't think we'll see signed .app files for Mac OS X since they are charging a (ridiculous) $99 fee for a developer certificate.

I've never understood charging developers to make cool stuff for your platform...seems counter-productive.

yeah well sometimes OS creators only see $$$$$$$$$$$$

Apple is just... don't even get me started :P

"sometimes" means Windows and Apple >:)

7:33 PM
You can develop for Windows without paying for a certificate as long as it doesn't require a driver or user intervention.
It's just another way that web-apps are gaining ground since you don't sign a package to dock a website on your home-screen.

playing with syncing app settings across multiple platforms through ubuntu-one at the moment. it's a little upsetting that we have developer documentation but very few example apps

7:49 PM
@jrg @jokerdino Around?

This section mention that the PATH variable should be read/modified from /etc/enviroment. Am I understanding it wrong? Because I searched in thousands of post here and there is no one how mentioned this.
