Q: Discourage new users answering already accepted questions

njallamQuite often while using the new review feature, I find new users who answer questions that already have accepted answers. As new users don't usually have any experience on how StackExchange sites work, they tend to answer the questions quite poorly. What I am suggesting, is a popup message that...

Any comments?

kan
@JourneymanGeek I need to buy a Raspberry Pi :)
In India, it is really a pain.

@kan agrees
It's 3,400 ish Rs

kan
@AmithKK that's OK right?

For an Item that's supposed to be 1,820 ish Rs

kan
RPi is awesome.
@AmithKK True.
But, EXPORT duty and all the ...
Where do you think other than the official stores can RPi be bought?

9:26 AM
TenetTechnologies?

kan
@AmithKK Let me google...

o/ Hi world

kan
@AmithKK Hm.. Sounds interesting. But, I'd like to ship from the usual source... when it is available on stock
later folsk.

I think I want a PS3. Hi, by the way :S
@Takkat Hello~

o/

9:38 AM
Lemme troll eBay. Pang if you want meh.

@Mochan: eBay is long dead for me... it used to be great few years ago.

@Takkat I use ebay everyday :D

@Mochan Hello
PS3?
-_-

I used to use eBay everyday. Sold old furniture because I was too lazy to carry them out to the trash.

@AmithKK Justify your judgements, please.

9:41 AM
So, you can ship them?
@Mochan /me is sleepy :P

@kan @AmithKK: hmm, latest thing to smuggle into india? forget drugs and diamonds. SMUGGLE PI!
2

@Takkat LOL. I buy cheap Asian clothing and stuff
2
@AmithKK Justify!
@JourneymanGeek PI!!! (You mean Raspberry PI, right?)

@Mochan Umm.. I slept at 12AM yesterday and woke up at about 7:15AM

@Mochan: yes

@AmithKK No. Justify why PS3's are worth a -_- face

9:43 AM
@Mochan oh yeah supposedly "original" Coke Chanel" - no lie - ;)

got mine set up so I could get it updated

@JourneymanGeek Woooo! PI!!! \(^o^)/

it wouldn't see all the ram before a firmware update (yay hexxeh!)

@Mochan They are not worth a sleepyface :P

now I am compiling IRC services, which is an utter pain in the rear

9:44 AM
@AmithKK To me, -_- don't mean sleepy. >o<

Okay. Sorry :P

@JourneymanGeek I hate to admit it, but I'm not even reading your messages because I don't understand >.>
@AmithKK Np. Why ask PS3 then? You have question?

@Mochan: basically I'm installing stuff, the long hard slow, painful way

@JourneymanGeek Sounds... fun...?

@Mochan Well yeah
How much does it cost there?

9:45 AM
Maybe fun for someone like @Joshua, or even @jokerdino.

@Mochan: involves lots of waiting

@JourneymanGeek Aka... the UNIX way

and then something goes wrong, then you spend another half hour compiling

@AmithKK In Australia?

@AmithKK: on a anemic processor

9:45 AM
@Mochan yep
@Mochan make is nice when it works
But when it doesn't

@AmithKK Depends. I don't think it's cheap. Thinking I might buy one second-hand off eBay as a treat for myself for Christmas :)

"Is this output even in english?"

@AmithKK: make is nice on a fast processor ;p

@AmithKK I have used make before. make install

Anybody written makefiles here?

9:47 AM
@JourneymanGeek Like i7? nose grows longer

@Mochan LIES!

the raspberry pi has a 800 mhz arm processor
its phone grade hardware

@AmithKK Up and longer.

ttyl
cya
BBL

9:48 AM
>o>
@JourneymanGeek It's like, I thought I needed i7, but you all need it more than me... -.-''

@Mochan: will be getting one, won't help here ;p

@JourneymanGeek Well congrats to you. I am happy my computer was <$1000

lol
this box is 35 bucks ;p
and another 10 for the case I guess

This is my computer atm I can't believe it's only $700
@JourneymanGeek LOL. But it's tiny! You couldn't run Skyrim on that
BTW, when I said 'Congrats to you', I mean it seriously. Like... not meanly...

nope ;p
barely handles a GUI
and won't run windows (or ubuntu)

9:52 AM
STUPID DELL. WHY YOU DISCOUNT MY 400 DOLLARS INSTEAD OF 100 WHEN I BOUGHT IT?!
@JourneymanGeek Not even Lubuntu

no
cause ubuntu dosen't support the processor that is on it

I read a magazine called 'APC' (Australian Personal Computer), they covered the PI on the August/September edition XD
@JourneymanGeek Fair enough

@Mochan: its a great toy, especially if you have an old tele (or even a new tele) lying around

@JourneymanGeek :3
I want a smartTv

....
I accidentally rebooted in the middle of the compile
NOOOOOOOOOOO
2

9:55 AM
Ahahahahhahahahahhahahahahahhahahahhaaaaa ohhhh @JourneymanGeek you're in deeeeeep sh*t!

naw
just gonna need another hour or two I guess

Well, that ain't good eithe

naw, it can do it on its own
no biggie

Mornin'

@FEichinger Hello~
I found a $128 console in a local EB Games (do you have one?) preowned! Woo!

10:14 AM
<-- is struggling to get his own local radio stream broadcasting to that stupid smartTV

@Takkat Oxymoron alert :S

The makers of that TV believe its smart, which it isn't. So the makers may not be too smart either.
A stupidTV wont sell.

LOL

Somenone at Samsung thought it was a good idea to restrict radio streams to a list generated by some fluffy company out there.

Oxymoron: When two opposite words are put together and make sense. Idiotically genius, impossibly possible etc.
@Takkat LOL

10:19 AM
They will of course not accept a radio stream IP starting with 192.168....
<-- is unwilling to publish his music to the public

@Takkat That looks like my IP address :3

see?

LOL
@Takkat I would be too. Half of it is Korean, the other half is Japanese.

Koreanese then?

@Takkat KJ-POP :)))
@Takkat Japean

10:22 AM
+1000000 for Japean \o/

LOL
It's awesome though... so random at first, but so epic after.
Hyuna...

Now let's download ourselves a Win7 from DreamSpark ... Because why the hell not?

Neh. Windows is OK. I suppose.
I'm going. Need to dedicate my bandwidth to... something...
Bye!

cu @Mochan

10:39 AM
@Mochan Torrents?
cya @Mochan
@Takkat Why :P
@RolandTaylor wouldn't like a part of my music. :P

Q: Googling query from anywhere

ShagunSome times when I am trying out stuff on my terminal, I get some blockade or some error to resolve which I have to copy the error or last message then open my browser and then Google the query. Is it possible for me that I select the message via mouse and when I right click I get a Google it opti...

any idea?

i don't think so

atleast for text on terminal

Q: Google Search from Linux Terminal

Dean RatherI saw a Google console app someone wrote a while back, but it was actually a website emulating a console. What I'm after is a shortcut or linux terminal app which I canuse to quickly search google. Ideally, it will show the top 10 search results with numbers next to them, and pressing the numbe...

@Shagun What you're looking for is a global context-menu option that triggers a google search, no?

@Shagun that might work, --^
hack gnome-terminal '-)

11:36 AM
@jokerdino thnks

11:51 AM
@Takkat - re your keyring bounty Q - according to this bug report a new version of seahorse is in the proposed repo - in theory you should be able to use the existing answers ... can you try this please? bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/seahorse/+bug/1048484

12:26 PM
@fossfreedom I thought it was htorque.
anyway, i tried the proposed version and it works.

1:13 PM
Why on earth is 2buntu.com unavailable?

down for maintenance i think.
should ping Marco

PING @MarcoCeppi :P

it's not just you

@AbrahamVanHelpsing What?

A: Use of the macbook-air tag and the macbook-pro tag instead of the macbook tag

david6I think we should be able to have a minimum of two levels of details, with the brand also added only if needed for clarity. An exception, for use of additional sub-tag, should only made for unusual sub-classes of existing complex tags. Argument 1: Search If a question is raised, it should be...

Need moar specific tags. </sarcasm>

1:27 PM
@fossfreedom yeah it must have been htorque who bountied that.
@jokerdino at least one tag per hardwares gives us freedom of choice (to close as TL) :P

;D
from now on, i am gonna tag my questions as dell-inspiron-14r-n4010
because dell-inspiron is not enough

You should also tag the mobo and the graphics card!
Oh, and the brand of your mouse in case it matters
4

i am thinking 5 tags is not enough. we need at least 10

lol
Lets create a farm of tags with sub-tags and sub-sub-tags \o/

David will do it for us. He even listed most of the tags he created :-)

1:33 PM
They will all have a tag wiki within 24 hours

lol, so true

They will all have a 2 page long tag wiki edit within another 24 hours sighs

you mean copy+paste from the product page.

Not a single typo because of that.
But a broken link within 1 month

sigh

1:36 PM
People responsible for that wont help cleaning up because they are so fed up...
sighs even harder

and then they'll rant because all their edits are being reverted..

The main reason why they are so fed up

how much is a different from that it needs its own tag?

Tags are for google only, and should be enough, really. I doubt we need anyway.
I removed from my favourites because it got too many,

tags are also for people who are good with a specific field, supposedly.
like i follow unity tag
but i don't think anyone really would follow asus-eeepad-tf200

1:41 PM
Like Dell inspirion future 2020 model Asia?
jinx

yeah i should start following inspirons

Let's create Borg Airscouter WD-100G and synonym it with rich-people

:>

BRB

appears and immediately disappears

1:52 PM
Yo. Sorry, had to deal with a HDD and a fan failure. e_e'

@Mahesh I heard about this persistent starting thing and it is cool

What's a bad temperature for a HDD to operate above?

I don't know. Mine runs north of 70C

@smartboyhw down for everyone or just me. it's not just you

I know mine was running north of 90°C, so...

1:56 PM
Mine never runs more than 90 throughout @_@

(I often had to pull off the bottom case and fan it off manually.)
So <80 is acceptable.

I don't think mine is a definitive statement.
I was just sharing my experience.

Mmm, true, and with running a netbook...
Random trivia: "Legion", a Geth unit from Mass Effect 2, makes reference to Linux. "Executing sudo command", as the lightbulb-head says.

@Takkat my bad - thanks.
@jokerdino cheers for the confirmation - so the existing answers still apply with this proposed version?

@fossfreedom yes
specifically, i just used izx's answer. not sure about others

2:10 PM
@jokerdino will refund the bounty then - doesnt make much sense to have a "proposed" answer.

yeah.

2:26 PM
Also, I got tumbleweed-ed recently. <w<'

\o/

I would put a bounty on my question, but my rep is still a little low. xD

i think your icon theme is to blame
you have just enough to put a bounty.

True, I haven't gotten to changing it yet. What's the accepted size for icons?
100x100?

what size? i just use the defaults

2:31 PM
@Omio you should add to that question what is in the "show battery status" drop-down and what happens if you choose a value.

o.o; I thought I did?

You might also what to try quantal on a USB stick and see what happens - I suspect this is a kernel issue.

Mmm, this particular computer is no longer available (The HDD died a few days after this), so...

close the question then - doesnt make sense to leave it open.

But I'm pretty sure that there's a couple other users with the same issue, and it's 12.04-specific, as far as I can tell, so...

2:35 PM
i can tell it is a bug.
it should be there but isn't there. Bug.

Probably. Still, not in a position to properly report it, here. I'm stuck with x64 Windows, on a hardware system that's rather... ...delicate (last system exactly like this I tried to install Ubuntu on, I fried the motherboard.)
That makes 2 HDDs trashed. I have a bad track record here.

any other idea
@jokerdino it didnt wokr for me
:(
any one pls help me out

@Shagun here I do such things with copy & paste via the clipboard. Pretty fast when you have a Google search bar open somewhere.

appears
Add code to gnome-terminal

create a plugin instead

@jokerdino nice find :)

3:28 PM
@jokerdino I tried that

i gave a similar link to him earlier. he says it doesn't work.

used tweaks didnt wrk

used a ppa?

sorry I dont understand what ppa is but I followed the links as given

Anybody having a WolframAlpha Pro licence?

3:29 PM
@AmithKK wanting a step by step answer to do your math homework?? ;)

@Shagun how did you try before?

No, I want interactive graphs.

by following the instructions as given

hm
i am going to try it :-)

I will figure it out if this link doesnt work
@jokerdino didnt work

3:35 PM
it works for me.

I need something to solve graphs with

@shagun, i am guessing you are not using gnome-terminal

I am and made sure of it by typing gnome-terminal to make sure I open gnome terminal only
and bdw i am using 12.04

it should still work in 12.04 :|
tell me what you did so we can see what went wrong.

Is 0/2=0?
5

3:42 PM
yes

What in the name of GNU
I WASTED ALL THIS TIME FOR A DAMN ANSWER :P

Breaking news: Amith fails math.

O.O
That was dumb

@Shagun, i added an answer on your question. if it doesn't work, you should be doing something incorrect.

y=(6-3(x))/2 where the value of x would result in a value which is an integer.

3:51 PM
i am not doing your homework

^^ is there a expression for that?

but google can draw graphs

@jokerdino wait how?

ooh

3:54 PM
I think I need to take it back whatever I said yesterday

[google.co.in/… it doesn't work for me)

y needs to be on one side
your algebraic manipulation sucks

Yes it does
It's hard researching on a phone

now let me go to sleep for another night

Good Night @jokerdino
Sweet Dreams :P

3:56 PM
i won't come back until the 14 nov night. So, cya
3

Here: y=-1.5x+3
Oops, I see a flaw.

@jokerdino cya

3x-2y=6 -> -2y=-3x+6 -> y=(3/2)x-3 -> y=1.5x-3

Yeah

I fugged up a negative. xD
I know my linear equations (y=mx+b)
I can use a refresher on quadratics, but my linears and trig is amazing. >w>'

4:07 PM
@AmithKK is there a reason you're not just solving for x and y, setting to zero and drawing the line like i think the course is designed to teach you to do?

Because I was absent for the course

@AbrahamVanHelpsing: Linear equations aren't meant to be solved in the traditional sense.

web and tutoring :P
Yes, I know how to solve Linear Equations
Graphical Equations are just a pain sometimes.

It's bad practice, since Quadratics does it in a different way anyways, IMO.

they have TI calculator emulators...
@Omio no just no. maybe i'm old.

4:11 PM
Has anyone experienced this, I checked out a different git branch for my project in the terminal, but in eclipse the files still reflect the other branch. I close the file and reopen it and it still not updated to the new branch

When you get to y=a(x^2)+bx+c | y=a((x-h)^2)+k | y=a(x-s)(x-t) and all that nonsense, linear equations begin to look-- I haven't used git that much, let alone heard of 'eclipse', so... ...not my question to answer.

have you tried refreshing the project (highlight the project root and hit f5)
@Omio you solve those the same way. it just winds up being sqrt(something) and you get a +/- value or factored like your example

Uhh, there are quadratic equations that don't touch 0 on the y axis, ever.

right. and you can set the "middle" to the right value and find the apex
this should be in mathematica

Yup, lugging my arse over there. xD

4:16 PM
I'm so going to get that mathemetica licence
I need to find that DVD.

Good luck.
Everything advanced I know only goes up to Gr. 10 Academic.

Or get the 3GB(?) trail.

Ask me about functions in math, and forget it, I'm lost.

Back to Ubuntu

5:00 PM
I got a 32GB USB, planning on putting a bend of Linux on it. I'm looking for something that uses as little space as possible.
What breed should I aim for?

@Omio Damn Small Linux
Or TinyCore

DSL? o.O; That's a li-- Oh, Damn Small Linux.

Also, you can make your own Ubuntu mini remix
with lxde and openbox.

o.o;

Openbox and LXDE are nice
Ask @AbrahamVanHelpsing

5:11 PM
Hmm... ...VLC, Pidgin, Gnome (Going to try to avoid unity), gedit, Chrome, Python... ...I think that'll be all the standard programs...
Oh, and Synaptic. Can't forget that for if I need to put in anything additional that I didn't think of.

BBT
Good Night

Rest well, Amith.

5:27 PM
Just spent two hours on pixel art I ended up hating. :D Great start to the day.

xD

you create artwork in Photoshop on Ubuntu? Is Photoshop reliable on UBuntu?
I was thinking of a dual boot, having Windows also just for specific programs
like Photoshop

@JohnMerlino Paint.net on Windows.
Dual boot. :)

5:59 PM
@Omio I've got chromium, openbox, xcompmgr, and vlc. It's pretty light.

Mmm, I'm massive about communication, and will need skype and pidgin.

pidgin seems like a good idea, but skype? not so much. you'll have all the ia32-libs/multi-arch stuff

I use Skype massively. [Edit: ...nevermind.]

i guess you could just install x86 base not x64 and not have to deal with multi-arch if the goal is superlight

Sadly, I have to go multiarch, as this will be used on both 32 and 64 systems.

6:03 PM
so what you're saying is x86-32 only is an even better idea
