@BoltClock Haha. :P
@lazyPower :D
Ok, I have a question: Does a technical screencast require commentary? I can't get my video to match up with my audio.

@jrg "Approved 1 min ago by jrg" Thanks. Now I can go to bed.

jrg
@BoltClock .... are you like.... stalking me or something? :O

@jrg No, you can use captions or subs.
@jrg No, but I think the chat system is.

jrg
@BoltClock um.... ok creepy chat system.

kbai

jrg
12:26 AM
@MarcoCeppi what tools did you use for the Ondina screencasts? Because I can't get openshot, audacity and gtk-recordmydesktop to all play nice with each other. :S
@BoltClock cya
@jonobacon's latest blag post is really cool. jonobacon.org/2012/01/23/hacking-on-accomplishments

12:41 AM
There needs to be an achievement badge for compiling your own kernel :P

@jrg Kazam

jrg
@MarcoCeppi Everything? Audio and Video?

Yup
Earlier ones were gtk-recordmydesktop
But I did them all in one pass, which is why their so...rough

jrg
Ok.
Now to get kazam audio to work nicely
did you use your builtin mic or an external?

jrg
1:17 AM
I want my old netbook back. It wasn't "fast", but it didn't require jumping through dozens of hoops for audio. :\

Duh! Why didn't I think of that? I've painstakingly written both bash and batch files to build the minified script - when I could just use Python!
slaps forehead.

Oh my. rlemon gave me a +50 bounty!

Q: Enable Wireless adaptors on Dell 1018 inspiron

James AmboleI have recently installed Ubuntu 10.04LTS -Lucid Lynx on a dell Inspiron 1018 that came with windows 7 Starter. However my wifi is not working, I found the rfkill list command and on inputting I got the message dell wifi-soft blocked NO, Hardblocked Yes,notable is the fact that although I can see...

The wifi is turned off by the hardware switch

@GeorgeEdison i pasted you a link to a python script lastnight

Oh right, I saw that.
I'm actually going to attempt to get that working shortly.

Google gave out a demo script, and i slapped in a modifier to read the filename -- however the output didnt seem to be functioning correctly

1:29 AM
Hmmm... I'll let you know if I get it working.

stoked about getting that running using Service Oriented Design -- its all powered with an API implementation

Looks neat.

The hardest part will be the up coming rule engine -- i have to abstract that -- system wide -- data using rule sheets per traffic source and campaign, so they can enable/disable schools/programs for those TS/Campaigns

It looks like you're using flot for the graph?

yep
baseline dark blue is mobile leads processed per day, the top line is vendor/organic traffic
i'm going to throw down some speedups by using the HTML5 datastore and cache the ajax data for an hour or so, and throw down some cache checking which will make this much nicer to use, right now the data-pulls are causing browser freezes when iterating over 50+ entities of data.

1:41 AM
That sounds similar to what I'm doing for the API wrapper - making use of localStorage and SQL database where possible to store the data locally for a set amount of time.

yeah pulling from the API every time is horribly inefficient
its ok during dev -- because the only person its going ot affect is me. but once i push this out for everyone to use its going to cause some complaints.

Right.

How much luck have you had using browser sql?
from what i've read its still really flakey, so i'm leary to use it in a production app

I've never used it actually.
This will be the first time I've tried using it.

hi

jrg
1:53 AM
What do people here use for domain registration?

dnsimple-- because i hate godaddy

jrg
have good experience with them?
Oh, godaddy is off the table to start with

yep, and i have about 350 domains managed through them :)
quite possibly the easiest to use zone editor on the face of the planet as well

jrg
DNS editing isn't an issue, i route everything through cloudflare.com anyway

then you probably dont have much need for dnsimple then

jrg
1:56 AM
i'm only in the market for a registrar.

their editor and api is the big draw there

hi ..You guys have alot of experience in linux ..so i just want to ask a question abt studding linux

what is studding linux?

I M studding Linux & Unix ...I Spend about 12 to 15 hours a day on linux & unix ...REDHAT & solaris

just for clarification, do you mean studying?

2:00 AM
i think he means studying

jrg
If you want to study linux. start by breaking it.

and then fix it

I want to ask what are the professional certification shall i done in future ... i m going to have papers of solaris 10 next month ..

jrg
2:02 AM
(but do it in a VM!)

@OneZero thats a personal choice. No real difinitive answer to that.
subjective
votes to close

u guys have alot of experience in linux so should know the good answer of my questain

You should really try our friends at Unix and Linux.

@OneZero you can try asking on unix & linux discussion. however i think that question will probably be closed as subjective. But give it a shot anyway.

okay sir ty

2:06 AM
We are just enthusiasts in Ubuntu and nothing more.

most of us anyway :)

jrg
Dang. Rendering takes a long time.
Wonder how hard it'd be to setup a render server in the basement...

if you dont have a beast of a video card / proc / ram then yes. yes it does.
you can use EC2 for that if you have the money.

jrg
video card, better than what I had, ram, lot better than i had. :D
Not worth it right now, I'm not doing enough.
I do have one ec2 micro that i'm using as a build server though.

\o/

jrg
2:10 AM
or rather, was, until i realized that its faster to do it on my own machine. :P

I love using ec2 for my CI server - its so handy
Jenkins!! be my slave

jrg
hehe.

yes master.. i'll run your unit tests on every commit

jrg
lol

as it should be

jrg
2:12 AM
now i'm reluctant to do anything with my computer while its rendering - i've had enough crashes today that i'm starting to get a little paranoid. :P

Oh, will there be videos of your scale10x talks Jorge?
i'm asking because the power user unity talk should have a link on the new ubuntu power users blahg thingy. :)

I want the power user blahg link!

we don't have anything up yet.
i think philip added it to the planet, i'm not 100% sure though

is there any Ubuntu video training ? like train signal & CBT
ubuntu server

@OneZero Try taking a look at screencasts.ubuntu.com . It covers specific topics but isn't like your formal training like getting trained from a book..
as in, it isn't ordered topic-wise..

The more you do it, the better you will get. THe whole reason i've never published a webcast is i look at peepcode and realize how bad mine suck.

jrg
well, i'm after a different market here
peepcode is normally ~hour+, right?
and they all use shiny macs.

yeah but you figure you pay 12 bux a webcast
you're giving these away

jrg
true.
this is free, and i've got a goal to cover something awesome, inside of 5 minutes.
even if that means i have to speak really fast like a chipmunk on caffeine. :D

i paid for an Umbraco webcast sub a year ago, because i thought it would be the CMS that answered all my questions (hah i failed on that one, its worse than joomla and drupal combined) -- the quality was low, the speaker was difficult to understand, etc. etc.

jrg
oh? :\

2:48 AM
webcasting is an art that takes time to refine and study where you can do things differently or you can be like marco and stamp it with "idgaf, the thing is neat right? oogle it!"

cuz lets face it, his cpanel webcasts are like crack

When is the next data dump? :O

Should be March.

Wow, they are not monthly?
That should be quite a long way away.
How frequently is Stack Exchange Data Explorer updated?
Data is updated monthly.
OK, are we talking about the same thing?

4:35 AM
BB after lunch.. :)

4:49 AM
@jokerdino No, the data explorer is updated monthly - data dumps (where you can download XML files with the data) are made available every three months.

Oh that kinda makes sense.

I was going to quote a fancy word to indicate that the data dumps are released every three months but...

You need a local dns server setup
Or to get a router which has that built in
Once you setup the DNS server, and name each machine, just update your router to point to that "server" (on your network) and ensure your server will do external lookups

ok... I'm pretty sure my router has a DNS server... if not I know I have one that does (DLG-4500)

jrg
dnsmasq should work if you're going to get super fancy

thanks @MarcoCeppi
@jrg what is that

jrg
@rlemon dnsmasq: AKA, /etc/hosts for the entire network
The homepage describes dnsmasq as a lightweight, easy to configure, DNS forwarder, DHCP and TFTP server, designed to provide DNS (and optionally DHCP and TFTP) services to a small-scale network. It can serve the names of local machines which are not in the global DNS. The DHCP server integrates with the DNS server and allows machines with DHCP-allocated addresses to appear in the DNS with names configured either in each host or in a central configuration file. Dnsmasq supports static and dynamic DHCP leases and BOOTP for network booting of diskless machines. The developers of dnsmasq tar...

Hello @MarcoCeppi
Thanks for hosting Sunday's Minecraft SE Game on!
Any plans to do another Minecraft Capture the Wool game anytime soon?
IMHO, the competition was not advertised enough. Maybe one of us could get in touch with the Minecraft forums or gaming.SE to try to get a little more publicity. The more players, the more fun.
We also need a better webpage at stackgaming.com that provides more helpful information then "Go Away". I do website design in my free time and I would be willing to pitch in a little of my time...

1:57 PM
lol
I would also be interested in helping (anyone play Diablo2 still??)

I think there are plenty of people on the SE that would be willing to help.

but, if we are vamping the stackgaming site can we leave the "Go Away" banner

On Sunday's minecraft game, we were down to two players by round 2

make it marquee a crossed the head of the page... AND AGAIN AT THE FOOT!

We started with 6... then two left mid-game... then, just Matt and I...

1:59 PM
minecraft is not free no?

It has to be an annoying, spinning, flashing, multicolor banner too...
NO, minecraft is 26 bucks.
I got my copy for free.
For mothers day they were giving away free copies.

is it pay per play or pay per purchase

jrg
per purchase

(only reason why I don't play games like WoW - Eff PTP)

pay per purchace

wench and bitch should also be viewed as non offensive

and ...

bitch (depending on the context) however is still offensive.

jrg
bastard used to mean "illegitimate child", particularly in the context of a son/heir.

it is just a female dog.

@jrg i know... bitch is like @jokerdino says
wench means "young lady"

jrg
2:12 PM
Indeed.

however calling someone an illegitimate child or a female dog could still be offensive.

jrg
ah, the days when someone could say "we had a gay party", and people would understand they said "We had a happy/fun/wonderful party". AKA, the days before we started butchering words.
that is true.
