Q: Unity: Stop Dock Repopulation at Restart

LouisUnity is currently the default window manager on my system, a window manager that's available for many Linux distributions, meaning this question isn't Ubuntu-specific. I have disabled the dock's autohide using debconf, but apart from that I haven't altered any of the default settings. My usage p...

@GeorgeEdison OMG! I hit mortarboard from just one answer. @.@
And, OMG. We got elections.
@jrg All the way!!!

1:31 AM
What elections?

@William Ask Ubuntu moderator elections.

@jokerdino Elections?
I don't see it...

I see it in the pinned messages over there >>>>
But no meta post as of now.

I just couldn't keep quiet about it :) the official announcement will happen next week, probably with a big banner on the main site
if I remember correctly from last year
if you want to learn how it works, you can look at last year's election pages

i was hoping the elections come later so i can get the convention badge and run for mods XD
I will try next year :)))

1:42 AM
@StefanoPalazzo Ah, I see you listed the lens on Stack Apps.

do you need to have that badge now?

I think you only needed that on Stack Overflow.
But I could be wrong.

I thought so
@GeorgeEdison yes, completely forgot about that.

Well, you got a +1 from me.

I made mention of the fact that it supports all the sites. sadly, I can't track downloads from the software centre
it just says "1 purchase", and that the app is still in the QA process

1:43 AM
Yeah, that's too bad.

Q: Customizer freezes on Ubuntu 11.10 using 32 bit or 64 bit iso

WilliamI downloaded Customizer 3.2.1 from ppa:customizer-dev-team/devel and ran the application through the terminal so I could see the output. I have tried both 32 bit and 64 bit isos, but once the isos are selected the file browser closes but all the buttons stay grayed out. I have tried both 32 bit a...

Could someone please help me format the code on this?

No problem though. I just use chrome's inspector to may it say "10,000,000" :P

Can't seem to get it to work, I'm not very good at wiki text.

@William ah, the ticks are just for inline code, within a sentence. highlight all of the code and press the "<$>" button
that will indent each line by four spaces, which is how you mark up code blocks

Thanks!
Learn something new every day.

1:46 AM
@William also check out the orange help-button on the right hand side of the toolbar. it's a little obscure, but the help is very good

@StefanoPalazzo I thought you need to have that 3 badges for mods?
Shrunk & White, deputy and convention.

@jokerdino I know what you mean, but I'm not sure this is the case on all of the stackexchange sites. it might just be SO, SU and SF

5 mins ago, by George Edison
I think you only needed that on Stack Overflow.

Ah.

there are elections on Programmers at the moment, and they don't mention any badges. so it looks like you're good to go

1:52 AM
@StefanoPalazzo Oh oops. I don't want to become a mod. runs

2:14 AM
I see that potential mods should be trawling the meta.

Yeah, meta activity will be a big plus

takes note

Things you want is notoriety in the community, a decent helpful flag count, editing, meta activity, (badges don't hurt either)

You don't want to be infamous in the community, right?

I mean it's hard for me to say, I'm sure Oli and Stefano can say better. I kind of got elected because I was a Pro Tempore mod

2:17 AM
@MarcoCeppi Looks like I am a long way away. :/

looks

NOooooOO

I don't see anything wrong with your account, you could certainly run!
You don't have to be the top rep user to get it, you have to have what it takes to be a good moderator and convey that to the people

@jokerdino you can have a look at the old nomination statements to get a feel for what people want in a moderator: askubuntu.com/election/1

being active in site decisions on meta, being a constructive user, patience, patience, patience, and a little more patience, and time
2
Moderation can be a pretty time consuming addiction

2:22 AM
@MarcoCeppi Heh... I'm busy enough with Stack Apps.
Er... @MarcoCeppi... weren't we supposed to hear an announcement yesterday? :)

yeah, I couldn't imagine being a moderator on more than one site

I still can't figure out why fluteflute wasn't elected instead of me. I voted for him (:
stares into the distance

You got some good endorsements

I really wish they would offer 4 positions.
(I'm not planning to run, by the way.)

Endorsements are great, seldom to people read the whole text
Especially with a lot of candidates

jrg
2:25 AM
@jokerdino ?!

just to make sure my cheering isn't in vain - you're going to run, @jrg, right?!

jrg
Ok, i'll admit it. I've had my "moderator election spiel" in the works since last election and I chickened out. :P

@jrg If you run, I will vote for you.

Prepare yourself for the town halls. I will be drilling all who run and show up

jrg
2:27 AM
@MarcoCeppi oh crap. ;P

@MarcoCeppi If I'm around, I'll yell at the candidates too.

@MarcoCeppi I think I know what I should be doing.

jrg
I want good questions for the town halls, ok?

you're going to enjoy our secret meetings, where we make sacrifices to our god Richard Stallman

2:29 AM
it's cool though, beverages provided
@jrg Of course, I'm saying prepare for tough questions about the issues

jrg
@MarcoCeppi I understand.
I watched/read the logs of all the SO moderator ones.

@MarcoCeppi Over the Internet?

@jrg Good luck. I am going to vote for you!!

jrg
COMON GUYZ WE DONT EVEN HAVE AN OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT YET. :P

"I hereby endorse James Gifford for community moderator."
2
Alright, you can star that ----^

jrg
2:31 AM
Oh shutdup all of you. :P

In other exciting news: github.com/nathan-osman/Stack-Mobile
I'm planning to write a charm for it soon too.

jrg
(i appreciate the support guys, just think its a bit premature. ;)

Insert subtitles permanently and convert video http://askubuntu.com/questions/97975/insert-subtitles-permanently-and-convert-video #video

jrg
OOhhhh... fancy Stack mobile code. /me reads

jrg, be sure to write some charms. you will get mugs, t-shirts and votes from Jorge !

jrg
2:34 AM
I tried charming - didn't work with me. I just don't have the skills to charm anything useful

@jrg Code will follow shortly.
I just have a README in there now.
One of the license conditions though will be that you cannot use the name "Stack Mobile" and the logo.
You will have to come up with your own brand when you use it.

jrg
@jokerdino Although, I could charm like, nagios or something
@GeorgeEdison yeah, i was gonna ask "wheres the code" lol

I have it :)
And of course the Google Analytics code will be missing. That's proprietary to me.

jrg
Naturally

Maybe I'll add user accounts so you can access your inbox in the website.

jrg
2:49 AM
That'd be nice

This is going to take longer than I thought.

So, I have 2894 right now. Just 106 before I start closing all those dups! Wooooooooooooooh
Oh crap.
Don't get me banned. @.@

You're getting closer to 3k... :)

Whichever nice and kind guy that is, thanks. But, this is creepy.

It was me :)

3:00 AM
Thanks.
But.... Wouldn't that count as voting irregularity? :O

Nope - I know exactly how many I can cast without triggering the suspicious voting flag.

Oh hmm
Oh look. I got the 11.10 badge.
@GeorgeEdison On that note, I have a question.

Sure.

let's say you use school network or some public shared network. If there are multiple users of SE and they occasionally vote each other, how does the network differentiate them?

segregation by IP is a horrible metric, it should be the bottom of hte list. use things like session tokens, browser, operating system, and other public identifiable data
i have a method at work that calculates based on ISP, OS, Browser, network cookie data, and of course, a session id. all three are independent metrics that have weight. IP being the smallest metric but still an important one.

3:07 AM
That's a tricky one.

@lazyPower That is an interesting mechanism.

This issue has been raised before...

Q: People using a common IP address can be miscategorized as sockpuppets

Delete MeI'm currently banned on Stack Overflow because multiple people in my office use Stack Overflow, and we share an IP address, so I was suspected of being a sockpuppet. Won't this also happen if someone uses a system in a public cafe?

its probably flawed, but it works well enough

Thank God. No one uses Ask Ubuntu in my school. (They don't even use Ubuntu for that sake)

@jokerdino I wouldn't really say "thanks"
If you're talking about suspicious voting patterns, it only applies on a per account basis, otherwise it simply gets flagged for review. So if a single user triggers it (either serial up or serial down) then the rep is reset, if it's an IP address(es) doing it shows up for review, IIRC

3:12 AM
Interesting -- thats far superior to my system which is prone to false positives
and it always errs on the side of draconian -- but its long since retired. the voting system for video submissions ended back in August.

Anonymous voting is a bad idea

Hmm. Where can I read more about this topic?

@jokerdino I have no idea, I've pieced this together from bugging Kevin Montrose and other SE employees/mods

Thanks anyway. Knowing more is actually dangerous.

The actual threshold has never been officially revealed
Gaming the system is a dangerous game indeed <:)

3:18 AM
@MarcoCeppi Question... Stack Mobile depends on Stack.PHP for the API - do you think it would be better to have it as an external requirement or include it in the repository?

@GeorgeEdison External

@MarcoCeppi the only problem is it was an acceptance requirement from the higher ups :| no budging

@MarcoCeppi Thought so.

@lazyPower Too bad, sometimes (all the time?) they need to be reminded what's good for them :P

so i play in my sandbox of what they want and do the best i can :) Funny thing is, the guy that won the scholarship submitted his video literally an hour before it ended. and it was a WOW video

We have seen a few hundreds of this type.

4:00 AM
Nice - my PC just blue-screened again.

@GeorgeEdison thats becoming a common occurrence

Unfortunately, yes.

I think its a sign

...of?

Time to go back to ubuntu desktop full time, we miss you.

4:10 AM
Yeah, but TrackMania doesn't work as good on Ubuntu :P

apps.nahklick.de/cnc play HTML 5 C&C instead

That was super weird - my second monitor displayed a pixelated image.

thats...strange.

It only happens on that page.
(It's probably because it's a DisplayLink monitor.)

OH man, those are horrible. i mean they get the job done
but talk about a big performance hit

4:13 AM
It's a really small one, though. So it works great 99% of the time.
Something like 800x600.
I can even run 3D accelerated games on it.

You never will
the USB interface doesnt have enough bandwidth to send the frames

It works though.

i've seen extreme tearing on those when just moving windows about. but its excellent for text apps

Like I said, it's such a small resolution.
Mine has no problems with video or games.

I have a spare 20" widescreen VGA only input monitor - want it?
oh yeah?

4:15 AM
Even at full screen, it plays them without dropping a frame.

interesting...
Maybe they've gotten better since I last looked at them
i digress, if you want this old HP monitor i'll send it your way to replace the display link device you have.
I'm replacing my current view ports with AOC 23" LED monitors
at $163 USD post tax, you cant beat it in price and visual clarity.

LED... cool.

i spend too much time staring at a monitor to keep using small displays at home :P thats how i'm justifying the upgrade

You need one of those Apple Cinema HD monitors :)
You only need one monitor if you have one of those.

ah like a 30"

4:19 AM
Of course, at $2000, you probably don't want more than one.

sad thing is, i wouldnt stop at one... I have this strange boner for command center style offices.

Want.

something like that is why i'll be forever alone -- because i will some day own a setup with that much visual real estate.
who needs a girlfriend when you have 24 crisp LED monitors setup in a semi-circle that will give you enough radiation poisoning to leave you looking like a mutant from Fallout 3

That requires a lot of of video cards - and consequently a really sick power supply.
(Liquid cooling at the minimum too.)

I'd say he has multiple towers and uses synergy

4:27 AM
Right.

My 3 monitor setup at home is 2 pc controlled. Twin towers -- i need a 2 port output card to power 4 -- but its coming after i do the monitor upgrade and decide what i'm doing with my pc's. If i'm going to drop the money on a system76 overpriced but basically certified ubuntu laptop, or if i'm going the roll your own route and just update the whole schebang around November.

What on earth? 24 monitor setup? :O

@jokerdino its disgustingly awesome isnt it?

That just looks too good.

Hi guys!
Can someone help me with this answer I'm a n00b so I don't get it.

@RonanForman the post linked by bihdi.zazen (askubuntu.com/questions/48535/how-to-customize-live-ubuntu-cd) should help you with that, have you seen the answers there?

@BrunoPereira It's not exactly what I wanted to do, and the answer on my question seems to be what I want, but it doesn't make any sense to me.

@RonanForman can you please point out the points where you question is different from the other, sorry if I am bing ignorant but they sound the same :(

@BrunoPereira Well mine is asking for how to make it from an existing install, whereas the other one is for customising a plain ISO.
Although apparently the install command for the program has 2 syntax errors in, so I don't want to use it any more.

@RonanForman I see, sorry. Im changing the title of your question if I may so, you can understand that it sounds the same for the common folk ;)
