12:00 AM
it is just different names for the same thing

@OctavianDamiean: root is only the default name for the super user. Actual capabilities are granted only to the UID 0 user(s).

How come dillo is not in the repositories anymore?

@GeorgeEdison is dillo actively developed?

@RolandTaylor Yup.

@GeorgeEdison I didn't know that (haven't used it since I first started using Linux (DSL)), but I guess it doesn't have maintainer in Debian.

oh cool :D

That one's 5 years old.
Never mind.
Looks like I'm going to have to compile the sources from dillo.org

@GeorgeEdison: Only in Dapper Drake and Hardy Huron.

@Hello71 like what exactly is your point? No one ever stated that root is the only name that can be mapped to UID 0 or something of that sort. Roland was right in writing that there is the root user as this is historically the preferred name for the full right users. I don't really understand the correction.

I don't get the correction either. In fact, the reason I tried to avoid getting overly technical is because the person asking the question evidently doesn't understand the intricacies of the Operating System at our level, so it makes no sense confusing him/her any further.

12:08 AM
@RolandTaylor Looks like it needs FLTK2 as well...

root is UID 0 - all other programs, like sudo only elevate the user to UID 0

@MarcoCeppi he is referring to the name which can be mapped to UID 0 but I don't see the point of the discussion

I don't get the question then

What web browsers are there for Ubuntu? http://bit.ly/kwwMvB #softwarerecommendation

Got it compiled.
Wow is it ever fast but ugly!

12:15 AM
\o/

It has some, er... CSS issues.
But it's faster than lightning.
Hrm, it also doesn't support absolute positioning.

12:34 AM
I think it's more of a hobby browser these days :/
from the looks of the website it's no longer being developed with "serious" in mind.
loves firefox panorama

I wish gedit supported per-language indent options.
I want gedit to use tabs when I indent Python code...
...but spaces when I indent JS code.

a plugin for it should be possible
I think gedit supports python plugins

12:50 AM
@GeorgeEdison uh? why that?

@OctavianDamiean Why not?

no I mean why is that? Is there any special reason?
time to get some sleep, it is already 3 am
night all

2 hours later…
2:32 AM
@GeorgeEdison addEventListener?

blows a trumpet
Good morning people!

3:42 AM
can someone please tell me where to find a decent pdf reader/printer

@JoshuaRobison may I ask, what is wrong with the default Evince?

epdfviewer is installed by default but it wont let me center the pdf of print to edge etc..

evince looks good on the outside but will not remember my print settings and keeps messing up all my settings

I hear there is Foxit Reader for Linux. It was excellent for windows, though Haven't tried it for Linux.
Go give it a spin.

in evince I even tried doing previews before printing out and the preview looks nice and then it prints out too small or something funny.

Havent ever used Evince for printing. In fact, I dont have a printer. So I cant help you out on that mate :(
wget http://mirrors.foxitsoftware.com/pub/foxit/reader/desktop/linux/1.x/1.1/enu/FoxitReader_1.1.0_i386.deb

1 hour later…
5:16 AM
I just press the print button and then OK and then nothing happens at all. When I try to print from adobe acrobat I get an error that it can't connect tot he printer. When I print with evince the file just prints out totally wrong!!!
is there any software that will print out a decent pdf file resized to fit the page?
i gotta print this file out
I don't wanna have to mess with this all day. I have other things to do ... for real. it's just a pdf O_o should be seemless

nobody will spot the difference

i should buy gum, cause those questions are damn hard
:D

@htorque here's an easy one: askubuntu.com/questions/44400/…

see, i'd answer that with "currently not possible"
but then i'm not 100% sure

7:14 AM
DAMN YOU!

compiz doesn't care about the launcher an the launcher itself doesn't have that functionality

I was thinking exactly the same so I decided to dump it on you >:D
lol

i remember discussions about that preview feature, so maybe it's coming to 11.10, but who knows...

Q: What web browsers are there for Ubuntu?

AlvarI was wondering what web browser exists for Ubuntu, I don't want to use wine. I just want the ones written for Ubuntu. I know about Firefox and Google chrome, you don't need to add them as answers I've never liked the Ubuntu software center because it never has all of the programs that I might ...

this might be my best question!

I just saw the screenshot I posted and it has AU as a background _O-

Hi @Rinzwind @Takkat

7:52 AM
I know one that is not in there >:) but it will add to me being called a nerd >:D

what, lynx?
text-based web browsers aren't exactly good at streaming video :P

I guess they will not work?
3
A: What web browsers are there for Ubuntu?

WhirlwinIt depends what you require. If you are in the geeky corner, why not try w3m? It runs in the terminal. An example: w3m example.org You can scroll up and down with the arrow keys, or by pressing C-v and M-v.

I had to download 83mb for chromium! :P

@htorque stupid alvar with his streaming >:-D

@Rinzwind I live in sweden where they send TV from usa a year after it's has aired in USA! that sucks, so I stream the series a day after they have aired in the USA! :D

@Alvar: I do think if we had a Q on all webbrowsers (that indeed is not a dupe) we should not restrict answers to not include cli solutions or streaming capable browsers.
(Your Q will likely get more upvotes if you included the CLI solutions as well)

8:54 AM
@Takkat what's CLI?

Command Line Interface
2

well it should be a huge wiki explainning what the browsers are good at
thanks! :D
I'll edit my post...

9:09 AM
@Alvar you can make it one but then you get no upvote rep. It becomes CW after lots of edits automatically.

@Alvar you could remove 3 and then someonelse will insert them eventually

@Rinzwind he'd need much more rep to do so. @Alvar could ask the OP to do so in a comment.
bbl

if you wanna make it CW, just flag it for moderation

9:50 AM
@Alaukik is that enough information? I was suprised to see the graphical version to crash though :D

10:01 AM
@Rinzwind so after i do that will there be a new account for root or the currecent account will be converted to root

you enable the root account (root account is there on Ubuntu but it is disabled)
could you try gksu users-admin and see if it crashes for you too?

@Alaukik bug? :P

@Alvar naaa I never use that link (I have my profile open and use the repsonces tab)

aha
I got +92 rep yesterday! :P

@Alaukik I found the graphical version to root and added it \o

10:15 AM
@Rinzwind i just found it too !

@Alvar I wasted 108 rep due to the 200 rep cap >:D

lol

@Alaukik cool \o

@Rinzwind but i found a diff method

That's Ubuntu: 100 different ways to mess up your system ;-)

10:19 AM
but i am not sure if it is superuser ?
or some other

afaik you need a 'root' user (see my image ;) ) did you set a pwd for root?
@htorque hmm should I remove my anwser?

i don't know, that's why i asked that question
;-)

I deleted it >:D

why?
let's just wait

fine Ill undelete it again >:D

10:24 AM
if you don't undelete it, someone else with post the same thing anyway

imho anyone should be allowed to mess around with their own system >:D

everyone is allowed to do so, no matter if we allow that question or not

you got me there :-P

@Alaukik please don't put spaces in front of question and exclamation marks - in english that's wrong (and it messes with my ocd :P)

@Rinzwind can you put the graphical version first with steps ?

10:50 AM
@Rinzwind links2 is the most awesome browser I've ever used! :D
it's fast on a complete new level! :D

11:23 AM
I finally figured out how to print PDFs !!!!
It took me all day but 9_9
For some reason there is a bug in some of the PDF viewers (acroread, foxit) that even if you select your printer from the drop down menu, it will not use it
Even if you see your printer in the drop down menu and it works with open office etc... you must ignore the drop down menu and select to use a CUSTOM printer
then in the custom printer box you have to type /usr/bin/lp as your custom printer
and it will print... O_o ... I know... makes no sense but ...

11:43 AM
@Alvar have you tried the graphics version? >:)

anyone know how in lubuntu, to change the category that your apps fall under in the lxpanel's main menu? for example to make gedit fall under programming instead of accessories ??

does lubuntu still use the 'main menu'?

back

hi

15 minutes till racetime @htorque

11:48 AM
@Rinzwind yes but it doesn't use gnome panel, it uses lxpanel so the inner workings are a bit different

@Rinzwind ssssshhh, think about poor Stefano :P

@Rinzwind with gnome panel, you can just right click and change it

@JoshuaRobison with the main menu you can just move it to another group iirc.
@htorque did you see the video I posted about the indy 500? :d

not that spectacular imho
webber last year, kubica 2007

that's F1 so crashing is not the norm >:D

omg

11:56 AM
lol
spa...
ok, sorry @all, this is no F1 channel :D

I am not sorry :=D

I'll just say Michael Schumacher could've easily spared hisself his return to F1.
So far it's been downright embarassing.

awesome... all week it's sunny, but today it's raining cats and dogs :(

Rosberg isn't young either, you know.
Then again I support Ferrari, make what you will of it :P

@badp he had an interview on bbc1 just now and was asked where Rosberg is better then him and he said "nowhere" .

12:00 PM
i had strong negative feelings towards schumacher back then when he was driving for ferrari, but i like him now - he's much more relaxed and likable
so maybe it really was just ferrari i disliked and not schumi

@Rinzwind , I figured it out. I have to edit the .desktop file and just change the categories.

:D
@Rinzwind @badp ok, let's stop it - we don't wanna accidentally spoil the race for others in here ;)
off for the race
waves

have fun!

@JoshuaRobison cool :D

@Takkat that doesn't depend on me :P

@Rinzwind Those 14 points in championship are just luck? :P
@htorque sure, now he no longer wins all races, "always" :P

@badp it didn't meant that in a bad way. Jordan was all over that comment argueing he was dissing a better driver ;)

(I stopped watching the race.)

I didn't :=D

I'm sure you enjoyed watching Vettel overtake Alonso.
The way he steered into and out of the pitstop area
Man, that was intense.

Blog is a nice list with links to whatsoever. He could spam this everywhere :/
@Rinzwind and even got accepted for that - the world is too bad for us ;)

A: AU policy on questions about root login?

Marco CeppiI disagree. On the stance that if people want to know how to do this then it's better getting the whole answer from an authoritative source like Ask Ubuntu rather than some back-ally forum or blog. Knowledge is power To be honest, activating the root account - typically via password change ...

Stirrin' up the pot this mornin'

catfight? @MarcoCeppi
@htorque taking a screenshot took me 42 sec longer >:D

@MarcoCeppi for example, you can forget that you're logged in as root - i don't forget to not write sudo in front of commands :P
dude how i hate that grey on grey action when editing chat posts

@htorque Sure, but I activate root on all my installations. I don't use graphical root, but there are a good plenty of times it has saved myself when a client decides to try and play server admin

@MarcoCeppi how do I make this question a CW?
http://askubuntu.com/questions/44326/what-web-browsers-are-there-for-ubuntu

@Alvar Flag it for a moderator to convert to CW

2:18 PM
ok :)
@MarcoCeppi done! :D

@htorque All I'm saying is - dangerous? yes. Keep it off AU? no.

We should always issue a warning like Oli did

@MarcoCeppi at least you can answer that question - i simple don't know what to do ;)

hey why did the warning move to my answer :( it was in the question :-D

@htorque I'm addressing your thought above in my meta answer

2:22 PM
@Rinzwind because questions do no harm :P
2
@MarcoCeppi sure i know :)

well I've seen someone getting hurt after questioning someones mental health >:D

ok, but that's a different platform

lol

"honey, can't you at least try to lose some pounds?"
^^ DON'T

@Rinzwind since that makes more sense .

A: What kind of role do the badges play on AskUbuntu?

Marco CeppiBadges are designed as few 'gaming' devices on the site. The first that comes to mind is flair Brian has 37 pieces of flair. They show the community and other users accomplishments you've made in the community. While some badges are easier to get than others none are really trivial - It's...

Did I miss anything about badges in there?

2:45 PM
cool picturers @MarcoCeppi :D I think it covers it rather well.

hw can i know how many posrs i hve edited?

As we all know, pictures make answers gold Shoots rainbows
@Alaukik Yeah, it's in your profile somewhere

@MarcoCeppi where?

@Alaukik Trying to hunt that down
You could use that - count how many are on the pages (times) how many pages

@Alaukik hover over your name ;) it will show a popup with the amount of revisions
(at the top of the AU page)

2:49 PM
it's 30 per page
@Rinzwind That shows how many people have revised your posts

oh damn :D

yeah, because for me it's only 1 this month - but I must edit 3-6 posts a day :P

@Alaukik: it shows edits per user (340 for you)

accept rate is more important than badges :P
