Q: Show running windows in launcher quicklist?

Marco CeppiI love the quicklist for launchers, and that it shows if multiple windows are open via the arrow indicators. However, it doesn't seem to list the running in the quicklist interface. Is there anyway to have the Unity Launcher list the running windows?

@Takkat morning o/

absorbers are in the waiting position

heh yea I know that today is the 23 :D

6:41 AM
Night all.

good night @GeorgeEdison

7:02 AM
@Takkat Good morning

waves @Achu :)

@Takkat my laptop doesn't work i get blank purple screen. i'm on live CD now

this is too bad - what have you done to it?

i was running fsck to fix some broken file system

morning @all

7:06 AM
what broke your files?

i tried my things but no luck

hi @htorque

i don't know exactly, but after i run fsck my default login was tty2 i can't login to tty5
i was trying to fix the system file then installing some fixed packages

morning \o

now i get only blank purple screen can't switch tty
@Rinzwind morning
can i fix this using live CD? since I'm unable to login any tty @Takkat

7:11 AM
@Achu your tty's are inside /etc/event.d/
more tty1
# tty1 - getty
#
# This service maintains a getty on tty1 from the point the system is
# started until it is shut down again.

start on stopped rc2
start on stopped rc3
start on stopped rc4
start on stopped rc5

stop on runlevel 0
stop on runlevel 1
stop on runlevel 6

respawn
exec /sbin/getty 38400 tty1

no, they are in /etc/init

?

/etc/init/tty[1-6].conf

hmm they changed it somewhere in a release?

/etc/event.d is rather old
that was upstart's old job dir

7:13 AM
oh I got some old machines here >:D 1 even with hardy _O-

so what do you think guys my problem is? souled i reinstall xorg?

sry, had the super-absorber here
morning @Rinzwind

sry?

heya @Takkat and @htorque >:D

sorry I was absorbed

7:17 AM
@Rinzwind hi

made my 1st bounty y-day \o

@Achu can you get into Grub menu (holding shift)?

@Achu does
ps -ef|grep tty1
show a getty running?

@Takkat no that doesn't work even when i try to reinstall the grub on live CD i get "fatal error" message

@Achu so Grub (and other stuff) may be bricked :/
@Rinzwind congrats!

7:21 AM
@Takkat so since i can't login any tty how can i fix this

@Achu can you see your files from the live session at all?

@Rinzwind where should i run ps -ef|grep tty1
@Takkat i can see my files from live CD

@Achu on 11.04?

@Takkat yes
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ ps -ef|grep tty1
root 2825 1 0 06:56 tty1 00:00:00 /bin/login -f
ubuntu 2912 2825 0 06:56 tty1 00:00:00 -bash
ubuntu 3947 3890 0 07:23 pts/0 00:00:00 grep --color=auto tty1
@Rinzwind

@Achu how did you try to reinstall Grub? Root-Directory or chroot method?

7:28 AM
@Takkat no there is an option on live cd "reinstalling grub" after login "rescue broken file system"

@Achu never tried that - so I can't tell how this works :/

@Takkat okay should i try reinstall chroot method?

@Achu not sure about that. Generally if a file system error occured you don't know what files are affected.
In these cases you may be on the safer side to reinstall Ubuntu.
There is an option to keep you data and applications when you do so.

hummm reinstalling....

It says "Upgrade 11.04 to 11.04" or so
you made backups?

7:33 AM
noop

I'd do that for /home at least!
You don't know if your drive is ok...

i have a backup of my files but not my whole backup like image backup including my configuration files

reinstall would be best I think. 1 thing: if you format the whole disc: make a seperate /home as a partition (you do that with the manual option ;) )
(that is if you do not have that yet ;) )
next time you can just add /home during install and alll your settings will be back up with the new system.

@Rinzwind you can keep /home if you do not format in recent installers.

ah :D

7:37 AM
But I have /home on a separate partition as well ;)

well that's cool too :D

I plan to put / on SSD as soon as I have spare bucks
no space for /home on SSDs

i have /home on a separate partion too

I have someone here who has an ssd (he's a windows man). Installing software that would take 2 hours on the old one took 19 minutes with the ssd :D

exactly
so for us it will be 2 minutes instead of 19 :P

7:39 AM
Oh and just to add: my Desktop is a symlink to /discworld/Desktop so I can even reformat home if I want to
my 1720 can have 2 disc (it has 2x160 now) but it can have a ssd + 320. I was thinking of buying that with next month holiday payout )

@Rinzwind holiday payout? That sounds great...
They abolished that here years ago. Now only some pocket money

@Takkat in Holland everyone is taken 8% of his salary each month and it is payed out end of May.
12*8=96% so 4% ends up in tax :X

sure they take it from you elsewhere

it's payed out in May so every working person has money at the start of their holiday.

How to gently disappoint this guy?

okay guys thank you very much for your advice. i'm going to try takkat's advice "Upgrade 11.04 to 11.04" or so wish me luck i have many configured projects (zend and ...) and i don't wana losseeee everything!!!

7:44 AM
@Rinzwind: it's not impossible, it's just a script away - but i don't wanna write it :P

@Achu as the Japanese say "ganbatte!"

@Rinzwind :) hope that mean good luck ;)

@htorque that's not very helpful :D
@Achu it means "fight til you drop" ;)

money motivates me, though :P

@Rinzwind lol a good one!!

7:45 AM
can I pay in rep? >:D (since you said rep = money)

@Rinzwind I made an answer on custom sessions - let me do a search

@Achu it's usually accompanied with this facial expression:
lol

lol

lol

i'm out see you guys after i'm "ganbatte!"
i don't have another machine to keep you guys

7:49 AM
i'm sure you can write up some upstart job that scans /proc/cmdline and sets the session with a little sed-magic

cool, /etc/init/gdm.conf already does for ARG in $(cat /proc/cmdline)

lol now for a ARG in /proc/cmdline >:D

at the end it does exec gdm-binary $CONFIG_FILE

8:22 AM
@htorque don't tell me - too bad. Post deleted. Grrr

so what's to do: find and store the supplied session in the for loop, find out where $CONFIG_FILE is and sed-replace the session with the supplied one
there just seems no way to get all possible (=installed) sessions

damn @htorque is good :-D
$CONFIG_FILE should be gdm.conf (?)

so you'd do: case "${ARG}" in gnome|gnome-classic|blabla) and then check if that session exists in /usr/share/xsessions (or something like that)
go, get free rep - i already told you what to do, i got no time :D

and I have nothing to do? >:D

hey, who hits the rep cap every day? :D

8:29 AM
not me :-D
I made 295 y-day and you? >:D

only 234 :P

good enough ;) anything 200+ is excellent :D (I had 50 from a bounty so those do not count ;) )

those are pretty cool applications

8:59 AM
if anyone wanna try to solve that problem above: defaultsession is in /etc/gdm/custom.conf, but this will only be used if the user never chose a session himself, else it's in ~/.dmrc - so you gotta replace the key there (of course it's a mess when an init script changes user config files -.-)

hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi hi

i was trying takkat's advice but can't found

Can anyone recommend the best way I can run a personal free git server? (hosted online)

11:28 AM
only peeking Hi @Greg @Oli @Achu

@Takkat hi

good afternoon @Oli :D

@Takkat i was trying upgrade from 11.04 to 11.04 like you said but i can't found any option

Oli
From 11.04 to 11.04? I imagine that's a short process.

hi Oli
my system was broken

11:30 AM
@Oli that's the new upgrade option when installing from CD

@Oli not if things are messed up ;)

it's supposed to say update from 10.10 to 11.04
but if you do an install on 11.04 I have seen upgrade from 11.04 to 11.04

so could you tell me how to do that?
I'm on live CD but can't found it

@Achu click the installer icon on the desktop(?)

ok

11:34 AM
only that it says 11.04 to 11.04

just a sec

@greg searching for something like this: git.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/GitHosting

@Rinzwind ah cool thanks

Indian seconds take some time :-D

@Rinzwind btw, are you in any way todo with DIV/Fenix ?

11:41 AM
@Greg nope :)

aha never mind then!, thought I recognised your name from somewhere else

It's the Dutch version of Rincewind. Terry Pratchett, Discworld >:D

@Takkat here is mine
the wired part is when i check my system partition /etc is empty

@Achu o.k. so you can't do that. It's not even recognized as Ubuntu :/

also there is no /var directory

11:45 AM
no /etc and no /var is a broken system for sure. Just use the 2nd option to replace it

so system seems completely messed up by a disk failure.

ohhh noo...

I'd go for a fresh install and replace /home from backup.

i really need /var/www directory

try recovery with photorec

11:47 AM
i have a backup of my projects but they are not updated
i use bzr for them

@Achu backup is for cowards :P
5

@Achu since /var is empty acc. to your previous post... that's going to become a problem.

@Takkat i wish i smile but i can't

A: All files erased after installing Ubuntu 11.04 alpha 3

TakkatAfter a partition table has been accidentally overwritten you will need Data Recovery Tools to restore the remainders of your data. @Takkat can i use photorec from live CD?

11:50 AM
yes, just download and unpack

@htorque thanks

hides again

@htorque i have downloaded and extracted the read me don't have info reagrding on live CD could you guide me how to do that

@htorque @Achu: photorec is in the repos (in the testdisk suite)
hides

@Takkat yeah, but the wrong version
@Takkat afaik 6.11 doesn't support ext4
probably not a problem with photorec, though
@Achu hm?

11:58 AM
@htorque ext4 is supported from 6.11

extract the testdisk-6.12 folder and run sudo ./photorec (or sudo ./testdisk to try to repair the partition)

Has anyone worked out a way to add Netbeans or Eclipse to the Unity launcher yet?

there are a lot of new file formats for photorec in 6.12 though

@Takkat rly? why didn't anyone tell me?
i always used 6.12-WIP

These nasty absorbers nag: needs to hide again

12:00 PM
@achu, here's a step-by-step example on how to recover lost partitions: cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Step_By_Step
@Achu but it's probably better to just let photorec harvest whatever it can find first, and then try to fix partitions
2
gotta go. no absorbers, but work. :P

@htorque ok thanks i't trying

just try to work slowly and read everything carefully
doing things in a hurry can make thinks worse (like "nothing-can-be-recovered"-worse)

@htorque :) ok

is still around but maybe has only verry little time

Q: How to Add a Shortcut On Desktop

GunnerI am new to Ubuntu and I am not quite familiar on how to add Shortcuts on the Desktop. I an experienced Windows user and my intuitions didn't help to achieve this.

is there any "send to desktop (link)" nautilus script?

@Greg !$ repeats the last command run and then executes it. Why you would pair that with cd is beyond me
It's the equivalent of !!

@MarcoCeppi ah, I'm following a git tutorial... it tells me to do this: mkdir MyRepo.git && cd !$ && git --bare init

A lot of times when I'm not root I'll run /etc/init.d/httpd restart so instead of having to either retype it with sudo or press up arrow, home, sudo I can just type sudo !!
Whoa, off topic for a second, Type @@ in the chat window! It shows you a user selection screen

@JamesGifford It's probably a new feature. Moderators kind of become testing pigs for new features

@htorque Yeah, my bad
