Q: How to remove non-working session entries in LightDM?

LexaltI recently added Cairo Dock to my GNOME Shell in 11.10. Cairo Dock is GREAT, but I'm left with one little problem that I'd like to fix: after installing Cairo Dock, LightDM includes two extraneous entries to non-working desktops. (The entries to working desktops remain unaffected, so I guess I c...

This one should get some votes.
It is pretty awesome. Both the question and the answer.

@OctavianDamiean you mean <10k ?
else it would be less than 10k..

@jrg there's a node charm

I got 6 different answers on a question which one should I choose?

Q: how do I make a backup of my entire system so I can restore it later?

AlvarI really like how my system is right now, but I want to try other versions of Ubuntu and I want to know I can go back to this setup at any moment. I want to backup my system and all the files that are necessary for my system to work. I want to backup my system I want to be able to restore it...

hehe I could spam @stefanoPalazzo on g+ if I ever wanted
not that I ever would but still feel the power! :)

it's like a surge of new power I will never use :P

did you see markjtully had some updates to the lens?

hi @Jorge

@Alvar It is less then 10k. :)
Alright guys. You can help now.
It is very difficult to create proper fan art or material for release parties and LoCo events without the vector files of the Ubuntu animal logos. I suggest putting them online in the toolkit, possibly with a guide on how to use them in a proper way if required.

@JorgeCastro yep I merged them hours ago. let's see if they're in the ppa yet

6:11 PM
@OctavianDamiean really? so only people that has less than 10k can review questions? whooooooooooooot

Post your priority ordered list there.

@OctavianDamiean yeah so before I would just review the new questions since the day before, now I have a nice targetted list, hella awesome.
@OctavianDamiean no, only people with the strunk and white badge can review questions

listening to Dan Bulls miecraft song. It's just awesome! :P

@Alvar No it mean't that it might be something also for people below 10k.

yep. I forgot to check on the build later, but everything went well. Marks updates to the AU lens should be in ur unities today

6:13 PM
@OctavianDamiean ok.. then it's >10k<

mark is a right rock-star

I'm always afraid of user-experience research via surveys

Help us redesigning the Sound Settings in Ubuntu. Please forward this survey to any Ubuntu user you know! https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/GZ78S8B
oh now I've inadvertently obeyed a tweet. oh well.

jrg
Is that the survey you were talking about?

@JorgeCastro I did dinner like an hour ago, I hate the time differences sometimes...

@jrg yeah. they scared me by asking if my favourite feature, the volume boost, was "really necessary"

jrg
@StefanoPalazzo eek.
yeah, it is needed

if that's gone, I'm off to AskSlackware.com :P

6:23 PM
@StefanoPalazzo ehm, how often do you use it? well once then it's always there IT'S A SETTING
not like what music I listen to right now...

good point :D

jrg
as long as there is a pavucontrol package in the repos, i'm happy. :P

I mena whooooooooooooooot

@JorgeCastro (bug unattendeded updates) will do as soon as there is some time to test ;)

6:26 PM
this is what it looks like for me about 8 hours a day ;)

@StefanoPalazzo yeah me too it's ALWAYS the same so every day I "change" it :P
not really the best questions but still better than the ones I answered today...

I don't have that problem

we have physiology education and the older student (master) give surveys from time to time, they aren't really good....

Q: How do I install the .NET 4.0 runtime for Monodevelop on Ubuntu 11.10?

EpsilonVectorI can't seem to get MonoDevelop to find the .NET 4.0 runtime. These are my installed mono-* packages: p mono-2.0-gac - Mono GAC tool (for CLI 2.0) p mono-2.0-service - Mono service manager for CLI 2.0 i mono-4.0-gac ...

That reminds me... Am I the only one who notices Banshee does not close your media when you click close.. the media remains open in the background (you can hear the audio) and when you start banshee back up it is continuing the playback from your last point (or current point is better wording)

@rlemon You can only close it when it's not playing audio

6:32 PM
huh, mine aren't at amazon

@MarcoCeppi I have akg k530 they are just awesome :)
what is amazon?
there isn't a Swedish one so why care?

@MarcoCeppi So I would have to first stop/pause the video then close it for the application to actually close
@MarcoCeppi how does it make sense that the application removes itself from my (what would be taskbar in windows) but doesn't in fact stop.

I've got AKG's K242, which are the same as (the consumer version of) the K121
(the gold and black one's everybody knows)

@StefanoPalazzo the "old" classic ones?
have a friend who has a pair...
I'm on the 20 loop of dan bull now minecraft song :P

@Alvar right, the difference between them and mine is that you can't detach the cable, and that they're beige instead of black
so they're pretty much the bargain of the century ;)

6:37 PM
Cool.. Googling... Or u got a link?

They are very similar to mine..

iPod Earbuds FTW!!!

I don't have an apple approved ear-shape, those hurt like hell for me

6:40 PM
@rlemon u die now :P

@StefanoPalazzo Same

@rlemon or as @thomasWard would have said BURN ;)
@StefanoPalazzo hehe

@allYouHaters I lie.. they are not actually Apple.. they are Sony White iPod Earbud look-a-likes

@BrunoPereira: Thanks for the translation!

oi, George :)

6:43 PM
can't find my k530 at akg :O

@GeorgeEdison do you have a minute to help me fix that scrolling issue? I can't reproduce it

the larger ones end up hurting my ears.. cartilage always gets sore 4-5 hours in. Earbuds I can deal with as long as they are not those rubbery ones that plug right into your ear.

hmm, not sure what I should do with this question...

Q: Problems syncing photos and strange effects of uploaded files from other devices

DanielI have a Galaxy Spica (GT-i5700) Android v2.1, rooted with Leshak dev 7 #123. But never mind the root info, the problem would be the same unrooted. The photos from this phone is stored in "sdcard/images", nevertheless the phone also creates a "sdcard/DCIM" but only stores some thumbnails there. ...

@OctavianDamiean laughed

6:49 PM
@StefanoPalazzo?

@StefanoPalazzo a bug you can't reproduce isn't a bug :P

Of course.

@StefanoPalazzo Sure.
I forget the URL though.

what browser are you using?

@Alvar There are heisenbugs which are fun to reproduce.

6:54 PM
@StefanoPalazzo Still happening :(
Chrome 15.0.874.121 m

let's see if I can install that

It's on Windows though :)

http://askubuntu.com/q/81392/10698
edited :P
in your face @jorge ;)

@GeorgeEdison windows?!?!? what's that?

6:57 PM
@GeorgeEdison you don't get any errors in the console, right? can you run this and tell me what happens?
$("section.chat").prop({scrollTop: $("section.chat").prop("scrollHeight") + 1000000000 });

@StefanoPalazzo: -----^

@GeorgeEdison I have the same problem on Chrome and Ubuntu

Hey, a clue!
It only happens for my messages.

jrg
yeah, scrolling doesn't work

@StefanoPalazzo: That small JS snippet does indeed scroll up correctly.

6:58 PM
oh my word

I think I got it

sed help please.

refresh the page and try again, it was a stupid mistake
I hope

whooot only mods are speaking :P

7:01 PM
@StefanoPalazzo Is that a know bug? The name-field-focus-losing bug?

@OctavianDamiean I didn't spot that yet, thanks

Cool. :)

I can't reproduce that one either ;-) damn browsers

@StefanoPalazzo But... that small JS line of code scrolled the page up.

uhm
not sure what to do next

7:07 PM
@GeorgeEdison Welcome, tell me when I can see them in the program to double check if they are correctly placed ;)

@BrunoPereira Certainly.
It usually takes one to two days.

I can also giva a hand in pt-br, spanish and dutch, will have a look later on tonight

@StefanoPalazzo: Also, it sometimes double posts.

ugh
great, that again
I'm doing it the most simple way possible. So maybe it's a bug in jquery

Anyone wants me to give a try?

7:14 PM
node.js does this:
function scrollDown () {
  window.scrollBy(0, 100000000000000000);
  $("#entry").focus();
}
but I'm scrolling a div, so it won't work

@GeorgeEdison intereswting

help? :(

@StefanoPalazzo what are you trying to do??

@rlemon just scroll down a div

using jQuery?

7:16 PM
yeah

whats the markup look like? anything special?

@rlemon it's working perfectly well, on my machine but on on George's
$("section.chat").prop({scrollTop: $("section.chat").prop("scrollHeight") + 1000000000 });
(the 100000000 is just there for peace of mind, I don't think it's necessary)

I've just decided to upgrade my home PC to 11.10. The HDD has a Windows partition on it too, so instead of re-installing everything I decided to choose "Erase Ubuntu 10.10 and reinstall 11.10" rather than my usual option of "Erase EVERYTHING!" ... Now I'm presented with Loading Operating System... Error: No such partition. grub rescue> _

so you want to scroll to the bottom of a div correct?
regardless of it's size?

7:18 PM
and yes the 1000000000 makes a difference.. the browser will continue trying to scroll to that value.. if you attempt to scroll back up after the fact you will be starting from 1000000000 (in certain browsers)

I'll remove that then
I put it in when george told me it didn't work for him
thanks for the tip :)

@StefanoPalazzo: I'm not sure if it's fixed yet but it's hard to tell with my long message in there :)
Can you please remove that?

@MarcoCeppi @jrg - can you guys help me with this?

sure, one sec
refresh the page @GeorgeEdison I cleared everything

jrg
@Greg here's what i've done with that problem.
reinstall
and erease the previous one.

7:25 PM
@MarcoCeppi: Any idea why sed is throwing that error?
Some of the escaping is somehow incorrect?

thanks @George! I'm glad that's finally dealt with

@jrg what that's it?

@StefanoPalazzo I have to ask... why not just $(document).scrollTop($("section.chat").height());

jrg
@Greg yeah, that's what i've done every time i've had that happen.
(happens at least once a month, because i tinker too much. :P)

@GeorgeEdison it would appear so

7:28 PM
@jrg I'm a bit confused ... when upgrading I already chose Erase previous version

@rlemon that doesn't quite work

@jrg you say I should do that again?

change document to be the div you are scrolling...???

jrg
@Greg Delete that partition, then re-create it, then install cleanly.
(sorry, i wasn't clear)

@rlemon yes :) It doesn't quite get the correct height

7:29 PM
@jrg actually I didn't get to see the usual partition editing thing during the install - is it hidden or was I being blind?

the "prop"-stuff is just in there because I was animating it before though. I'm using something like what you've posted in victory chat

jrg
@Greg It should be in there.

hmm ok

@StefanoPalazzo I don't see what you mean??

@rlemon I suppose it's just the padding
you can try this in the chat itself: $("section.chat").scrollTop($("section.chat").height());

7:32 PM
@StefanoPalazzo of the container or the content?? jsfiddle.net/FCfq7/1 I still don't see the issue

though you have to be quick, it's scrolling all the time
;)

how do I run scripts in chromium
I have the console open. or do I need a addon

@rlemon no you can just paste this in the console
refresh the page before you do, I removed the constant scrolling thing

just says null

should look like this

7:38 PM
looking at the markup I do not see <section> anywhere
I do see <div id="chat"
$("#chat").scrollTop($("#chat").height());

huh?
what page are you on?
</head>
<section class="chat">
</section>

this one...
$("#chat-body").scrollTop($("#chat").height());
that works perfectly for me

I don't have any #chat-body in my chat

ohhhhhhh
I was assuming you were talking about this chat room

heh :D I wish (:
'balpha' does this one

7:42 PM
have you figured it out yet?

yes I think so
not sure why, but George says the bug is gone
I added a missing function call and removed the +1000000 nonsense, that seems to have fixed it
oh my, now I get it
the function call was it. I just forgot that I needed to restart the server app
because the template for the page is cached in it. duh (:

lol
I do know that blindly setting the scrollTop to a exaggerated number can have ill effects in some browsers.. I had tackled a question like this on SO recently and that was the OP issue

yeah that would've come up sooner or later.

@jrg what do I have to choose for "device for boot loader installation"? Bearing in mind that I've got a Windows 7 install

jrg
@Greg whats the list?
probably something like sda

7:56 PM
@jrg I've got a few hard drives connected :S shall I type the list to you?

jrg
@Greg yeah, i guess. :S

lol @Greg the list is not helpful unless we know which drive you have installed windows on
i think

@jrg @rlemon
/dev/sda ATA ST30000113AS # This is where I want my /home directory
/dev/sda1
/dev/sdb ATA MAZTOR STM25325 # I have this split into two partitions, one for Windows, one for Linux
/dev/sdb1 Windows 7 (loader) # This is the whole Win7 packkage
/dev/sdb2 # I think this is where I want Ubuntu installing
/dev/sdb6 Ubuntu 11.10 # This must be the previous install that went wrong?
The question is, where do I install the boot loader to?

@Greg I would /dev/sda

@rlemon the hard drive that I want to use as my /home directory?
@rlemon I don't want to have any OS on that drive - its a single 1TB partition.
