ooh, pathfinding with water currents?

Well, that's been around for a while.
What I was working on was the tool tip.
I'm still trying to decide what information to show, colors, etc, but it's almost there...

@Sie it is the exact subreddit where I found link to this chat -- the only related chatroom I've managed to find
I decided to stick with the mechanics that I read in a huge Sim City 4 manual (I guess i was written by dev)
so a new citizen picks some place for his house and then day by day he says what's wrong with this town, until he gets out if his demands are not fullfilled
so it's like
def build_some_house()
if there is free space near road
    build it
  else
    build_some_road()
    build_some_house()
  end
end
road is built over the house if all the road lines are already surrounded
in my assumption the city I generate is isolated and has no road to outside world (out of map borders) initially

@MickLH I don't know if you dig number geek shit, but here's something interesting

Neil Degrasse Tyson: “You don’t have the option to say you don’t believe E=mc2. It’s true whether or not you believe it.”
Unfortunately, he is wrong about this. You have the option to say you don't believe it, and it doesn't matter if it is true.
Welcome to the world we live in.

user92578
the one where phoebe says she doesn't believe in gravity

Whenever someone says that they don't believe in something, I tell them that I don't believe that they don't believe in that thing. It gets them into a whole "Wha? Huh? Who?" loop.

But jesus said it was true

Well, I don't believe that you believe Jesus said it was true.

user92578
jesus is the bread

10:21 AM
It goes on and on and I never get tired of it, their impressions and mimics tell a whole story. Fun for the whole family.

@Tyyppi_77 where's that from?

user92578
@Tyyppi_77 I'm looking for a method, for example my method is to separate the textbox into 14 parts and then render each textures separately (I gave you my code as an example). Is there any other way? Maybe I have to use a class? If so, just send me a code snippet of that class and its methods. — Pradana Aumars 5 mins ago

Uugh
Also search doesn't search in comments apparently

Hey @Tyyppi_77 just make my game for me...

user92578
12:07 PM
I'll try to write as non-complete example as possible

what he should do, is do the doo doo

user92578
cool!

Guys, help me come up with a name for my LD38 game

is that the thing with the planets and the guys that move on it?

12:10 PM
Yes

user92578
"male escorts on a planet"

how many planets are there going to be in the game? have an idea for a map size? multi or single player focus?

@JohnHamilton one per game =p

4x as many as sean murray

12:13 PM
It's basically a minimalist (in terms of features) territory RTS game, you send dudes to capture camps, the camps spawn more dudes
And no, I am not creating a multiplayer game in 3 days

so you admit, you can't do it.

user92578
"minimalist territory RTS on a planet with dude"

holy shit you guys ever see this?

sees severed head, nopes out

it is a cancelled silent hill concept by kojima team
I worked in phone support for like 2 years, back in the dialup internet days
"What version of windows are you running?" a lot of people had no idea.

12:24 PM
@KevinvanderVelden totally awesome spherical territory yakuza / spells tasty (I worked harder on that than I should've)

Windows ME was Windows 2000
Windows 98 was Windows 99
I had to get them to reboot and read the loading screen sometimes.
Click on Start and read what it says on the side
Impossible for them to read that Windows 98 on the side, they read out the entire menu items
So I would just say ... UGHHHH, click shutdown and restart
NO ON THE SIDE IN BLUE -- "Oh in blue? it says Programs"

should've told them to tilt their heads left

I was wayyyyyyy overqualified for that job.
No man, you have no idea
It was like you are giving instructions to a brick wall.
its like the concept of processing information was impossible to understand for them.

Oh I have all the ideas, don't worry, my entire bloodline consists of people who cannot fathom how to work a computer... I was the tech support for many years before stuff became mainstream and my cousins grew up...

12:28 PM
And the one time you got them to rightclick on something -- every single click after that you would be prompted "right click or left click?"

at least now I can just get them to install teamviewer once and I'm set for a while

I used this
Back Orifice (often shortened to BO) is a computer program designed for remote system administration. It enables a user to control a computer running the Microsoft Windows operating system from a remote location. The name is a play on words on Microsoft BackOffice Server software. It can also control multiple computers at the same time using imaging. Back Orifice was designed with a client–server architecture. A small and unobtrusive server program is installed on one machine, which is remotely manipulated by a client program with a graphical user interface on another computer system. The t...

So, have I made enough progress to consider a Greenlight run?

If you are ready to get personally insulted go for it!

user92578
I think feature-wise you're there

user92578
But the people on Greenlight don't care about that as much as they do about graphics

user92578
And while your world looks awesome, I think the UI might be a turnoff to people

1:08 PM
Quite frankly the people on greenlight expect AAA quality games

Well, the graphics have improved a fair bit.

that are 100% original

that gray border looks really bad to me
and the buttons below it
and the fonts
Everything about your UI screams built-in Unity UI

Hmmm.
Okay, I'll work on the buttons, fonts, etc this week.

1:10 PM
yeah try to keep consistent with the UI

user92578
yup develop yourself an UI style

I have that contact I could put a word in for ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

for example on the right side you have blue borders (which to me provide no contrast but whatever), and then on the left you have gray

Fair enough.

the point is, it creates a focus point for people to bitch about
no one will appreciate the work you put into the world itself if they can just easily bitch about what they see initially

1:14 PM
Fair enough.

lol
people on steam are brutal
"oh look 10 people just before me commented on how this game looks like broforce, I better comment about that too!"
GAME IS BROFORCE CLON! RIPOFF!

I'll still work on improving it, but...

make the map a little larger so the border is the same size
And just use any other button style and font , should improve it
just use one of these and tint it
it will look better than those flat unity ones

user92578
it's often really small things that make up a style/look
like my UI is far from perfect but it's basically just two things: two transparent rects rendered ontop of each other as a background, and text rendered twice with an offset (to make the 3Dish look)

mine are literally just squares with a couple of borders lol
elegant.

1:22 PM
I was using kenney's buttons, then my friend made me neon looking ones, mmmmm

I'm probably going to upgrade to Kenney's buttons.
I even paid for them, so... I know you don't have to, but...
I was planning on moving that way, but I guess now I should just do it.

its worth a shot to see if it improves it or not
Also worth switching up from that standard arial font

1:41 PM
Sure.
I'll spend a day or two working on the main UI, and then start working my way through all of the dialogs

yeah, Arial sucks
cheap helvetica knockoff

I hate fonts...

LOL. I'll work on the font issue next.

1:59 PM
hahaha nice one jg

Maybe I'll just use Roboto

oh shit
that's not arial

The R at least is helvetica
yup, it's helvetica. the R is the dead giveaway
still fucking funny :)

Noto is Roboto, but not just for Android. I'll give it a shot I suppose.

user92578
2:13 PM
@Almo I don't get these

The one jon posted with the red car is actually written in Helvetica, so it's a joke
Mine is done with actual Arial

user92578
ohhh

Helvetica is plain, but arial has something odd about its proportions
The As in arial look odd, as does the R
I think the joke is a real inside one, like people have a vague sense that they're not supposed to like Arial and Helvetica is supposedly better, so you look at the red car pic and think yeah arial sucks, but it's really helvetica. a type person will spot it though

If I'm going to change out all of the fonts in my game, I should also switch to TMPro while I'm at it.
And if I'm going to do that, I should figure out how to make localization an option while I'm at it.
I won't actually do the localization yet, mind you, but get it ready.

2:34 PM
Uuugh, I hate all these "What is the most efficient way" questions
THERE IS NO ONE THE MOST EFFICIENT WAY
If you can explain what you're after in a few sentences then it's too broad for a statement about "the most efficient"

@PearsonArtPhoto sounds smart
Cognizer has comments in the code // ALMOLOCALIZE for places where I'd have to do the localization if i ever got around to it

Well, I was going to need to do it sooner or later...
Updating all of the text objects in the game will be a pain, but it's a one time pain.

2:55 PM
yeah

i made that image btw, lol
BTW, TMPro adds like 80MB to your project build size.

:D

user92578
"Choose The Arena" or "Choose An Arena" or something else?

Pick Arena

That much? Wow.

3:00 PM
Pick-A-Reena
I think it depends on the font and size of the meshes you render

My total build is only 16 MB...

3:32 PM
building android project: File path too long on Windows
whose idea was it to limit Windows 7 to 240 characters for a filepath
D:\production\LoveHipHop\Branches\Root\Builds\ANDROID\LoveHipHop_ANDROID\apk\int‌ermediates\exploded-aar\LoveHipHop_Gradle\play-services-base-10.2.1.aar\unspecifi‌ed\res\drawable-mdpi-v4\common_google_signin_btn_text_dark_normal_background.9.pn‌g
google using long names so you can tell what's what, and it blows up when you build on windows
now I have to move the build directory around to try to get it to work

@Almo only if you use certain APIs
You can without issue create files from windows on windows that windows explorer cannot under any circumstances remove

yeah

Which is really remarkably stupid

haha yeah

But then, I don't know anyone accusing microsoft of being meticulous with details

3:39 PM
I copied a file from mac once that had a space at the end of the name. windows copied it, skipping the check that strips those
so when clicking delete, it takes the name from the explorer, filters it, then says "that doesn't exist"
had to get out a dos command to force it to use the name with the space on the end

I can copy files from some path on a drive to my NAS, works fine with copying. Later trying to remove it from explorer doesn't work

:D

DH.
UNIX based and Windows interactions are the worst

haha

DH.
The classic CRLF - LF change is the most notable fuck up

3:41 PM
Had some weird ones between VMS and DOS back in the days

@DH. Nah, that's just two different philosophies, the file name one is purely a windows issue

VMS filenames have ;# at the end, where # is the number of times the file had been changed

"I can create a file with $name!... Hey windows, give me the file with $name" ERrRr, what are you talking about? I don't know $nam (sic)
And now, hooooooome

@AlexandreVaillancourt
you here?

DH.
@KevinvanderVelden It is still a problem, I had one client that their server was Windows but they had some users on Linux, which caused some texts to be LF only, causing the reports to get printed in one line

4:18 PM
Not an OS issue though, and there is a difference between OS interoptabillity bugs and an OS being able to break itself by a user creating a file

4:48 PM
I'm currently participating in a programming competition, and I'm always having at least one problem-
I'm not sure what's up with the judges, but so far there were 5 tasks we had to solve, and all of them was wrong
For instance there was one where you had to find the shortest path between 2 points, where the weights were based on the angle of the path. They said you can't go up slopes with an angle more than 30 degrees, and guess what, there was no path like that

That's frustrating, but are you 100% certain?

Do you ask me or who?

Yes.
I'd love to see the problems, if you can show them.

5:15 PM
Of course
To solve the first task we had to send a specific message to a TCP server. The problem was, that the server was offline.
Then came the harder ones

Okay, you definitely have that one.

They gave us a link and we had to write a web crawler that goes 3 links deep and count's a specific string in the source code.
I solved the problem, tried it out, and nothing. I checked it three times, then I wrote to them.
They said they messed something up, I tried the same result again and it worked

You should win the competition, fixing their problems;-)

There was a task here, that didn't require any programming, and it was actually correct
Basically a lights out game but with 3 states: mcdorli.github.io/lights-out/index.html
The third problematic one was the one I described above with a 256*256 grid
They removed the "less than 30 degree" rule to fix it
The fourth was the one I'm trying to solve know
It's pretty complex, you have a lot of mechanical parts, each of them has some possible failures. These failures have a chance to occur (defined as how many times it occurs in a millions) and a sensitivity (how bad is it if it fails like that)
And we have 100 modules that fix these problems. Each of these modules has a list of failures it can detect and a time they need to complete it
You have to pick out some modules, that checks these in the least amount of time
Here came the problem
They created a scoring system, where they first take every part that's not covered by the chosen modules, multiply their sensitivity with the occurence and they add these up

what do I do if two different android libraries include the same class and it won't build because of the conflict
temp/play-services-ads-10.2.1/libs/com/google/android/gms/internal/zznf.class
temp/play-services-appindexing-9.8.0/libs/com/google/android/gms/internal/zznf.class

5:25 PM
They first said they use the algorithm 0.7 * TCA + 0.3 * time, where TCA is the sum and time is the total time of the modules
But when I tried our result on the server it outputted a value very different from what I found
They basically messed up the algorithm and used an older version in the docs
We aren't sure in the fifth one yet, they didn't answer so far
Each of the tasks also contained thousands of grammar mistakes
This is pretty embarassing considering the competition is hosted by Continental

3 hours later…
8:52 PM
Heh, I reversed a logic check and my AI kept sending it's units as far away as possible

hahah :D

It is super janky, it has no menu, you start over by restarting the game. But it works? It even has an AI that is (probably too) hard

9:28 PM
Aah that fun moment when you realize one of the assets you used is CC-BY-SA
And now bed o/

Premature bed time

I think it's because it takes time for them to show up

11:20 PM
