@StephaneHockenhull hmm not sure
I was able to get it to work properly by plugging it in to the back of the puter. the cable was long enough, fortunately.

Q: There is a tag for 'chess', should there be a tag for 'pong', 'breakout', 'snake' and 'pac-man'?

Alexandre VaillancourtI asked a while ago a question about whether we needed the tag for chess, and the community felt that, yes, we needed the tag. Tags being there to help users find interesting question, I see often new game devs asking questions about 'simple' games such as 'pong', 'breakout', 'snake' and 'pac-m...

I write meta questions only to see them posted here.

7 hours later…
8:15 AM
@AlexandreVaillancourt all of those tags are useless imho

8:45 AM
good morning fellow gamers

Morning
tips hat

yo

user92578
9:06 AM
sup

10:05 AM
Unity all of sudden logged me out and didn't let me log back in
First it said service unavailable and then it said my username and password were incorrect
great tool, such wow

They're on to you Lasse. Wipe it all, wipe everything!

At least offline mode worked

I'm annoyed at how phones get software fucked after the 2 year mark
Oh your quad core 4gb phone is not working as good as it did 2 years ago? Better get an upgrade
Here is an idea, stop putting shit I never asked for on my phone
That I fucken paid for and own.
Step up gov. Fix this shit.

I don't know what you mean. My GM Discovery and I have been happy for over 4 years :o

10:23 AM
I got nexus 6, it has zero bloat software

iPhone 5s from 2013 is still going strong (wife's been using it for a couple years since I upgraded to a 6S+)

it's pretty much the reason I got it

I only had shit like facebook and I removed all of that.

HTC M8 locked by Bell
every update they fuck it up more
Literally every update, it breaks something, adds bloatware, and removes features I used

buying a locked phone sounds like the issue

10:26 AM
what the fuck is the point of updating if you are removing value?
Oh yeah no shit man

stealth action games be silly
I love them to death but most of them are pretty silly

@JohnHamilton :)
@jgallant LOL

10:43 AM
Can i ask general question , if you are a java developer (Client, Web) , and started enter Games World (C#, Unity) , and have a dream (start up) to build a game . at the same time you can develop something else on Web world (Java) [Easier case if i'm already a java developer) .. both will take time to be achieved , if you were me , what will you choose to start with

Don't do it.
There is no glory in game dev.

@Jason4Ever just start doing what you like to do

c# is easy to pick up coming from java

@Jason4Ever Why would you develop a game AND develop something else at the same time? Do you have to buy food? Do you have to pay the rent, the electricity bills and your clothes?

@Kromster , i like both but i see challenge in Games' world is better, just have some worries about this way especially it's a new for me and completely different from the web world + still learning

10:46 AM
If you are doing it for the challenge, then do it
Because that was my motivation
The business world is a joke.

@Jason4Ever why not keeping it a hobby till you gain more confidence?

After working on business apps for 10 years, there isn't much new to learn, you just know how to do it

Don't bother with the web world unless you plan on making your game completely free (as in armorgames stuff) or free to play (not fun to develop, might make a lot of money but they fail most of the time if they're small time game devs).

Game development however, provides me with goals and challenges that I can accomplish, and visually see the output as an extra bonus

@jgallant how about growing to higher-level-of-abstraction in BI/BigData/etc?

10:48 AM
@jgallant [leans in real close and whispers quietly] you're in the business world
[jgallant doesn't sleep again for weeks]

lol.. yeah this world sucks.
@Kromster there is always something new to learn, but it isn't neccesarily exciting or useful for my work

@jgallant haha, this reminds me of me )

@jgallant speak for yourself, I'm getting all the glory I ever wanted from my game :D

Always definitely focus on one project at a time in your business.

lol yeah sure John

10:49 AM
Absolutely. My mom loves it to death.

If you can work on a web app, or on a game, pick one and complete it first.

the idea is you know the web world is almost full with big competitors . i see the chance in starting up a small business from Games' world is better

That's more adoration than I can already handle

user92578
uuuh nope

The games world is also full with big competitors.

10:49 AM
LOL
Game world is also growing ridiculously fast.
Everyone expects free.

An AAA game (usually pronounced "triple A game") is an informal classification used for video games with the highest development budgets and levels of promotion. AAA game development is associated with high economic risk, with high levels of sales required to obtain profitability. In the mid 2010s the term AAA+ began to be used, describing AAA type games that generated additional revenue over time in a similar fashion to MMOs by using software as a service (SaaS) methods, such as season passes or expansion packs. The term is analogous to the film industry term "blockbuster". Even though the 3 A...
An independent video game (commonly referred to as an indie game) is a video game that is created without the financial support of a publisher. Indie games often focus on innovation and rely on digital distribution. Indie gaming saw a rise in the latter half of the 2000s, primarily due to new online distribution methods and development tools. Some indie games have been very successful financially, such as Braid, World of Goo, Flow, and Minecraft. == Overview == There is no exact, widely accepted definition of what constitutes an "indie game", however, indie games generally share certain c...

@doppelgreener there are hundreds of niches however, for Indies

The term "Indie" is shit now

millionaires call themsevles indie.

10:50 AM
you have games made by enterprises that rival film crews in size, and you have thousands of games made by small teams of 1-10 people

OH YEAH I'M TOTALLY INDIE BRO

@Jason4Ever Nope. Most likely, your web app will be faster to market, with less bugs, and you'll be able to make money faster out of it.

@jgallant indie only ever meant small independent teams. If Notch went to make a new game all on his own, he'd be Indie.

Web apps are like, oh yep it runs

There are much better ways to generate money than gamedev.

10:51 AM
if you care about money - find some target audience first

hmmm , so do you think it's impossible for one person to build a game alone (Graphic+code) to makes money ?

@Jason4Ever highly unlikely

YES

Yes, you can make money
But being 100% sustainable as your only source of income to pay bills and food, it's a gamble

Respect

10:52 AM
Its impossible, that is why a bunch of people have done it

I have a graphics guy and I'm coding the whole game myself, I've not made enough profit to justify entering the android store

@Jason4Ever FlappyBird is already invented, we can move on xD

It is entirely possible, in other words.
and has been done many times

user92578
Chris here is a great example of doing it

Entirely possible, highly improbable

10:53 AM
@Jason4Ever If you need money to live, don't start by doing indie games, start with a job that pays, hoard the money until you can live for 2 years without working, then go for it.

Tyyppi also

there are also people who've invested their time in making crap games who have not really broken even on the inestment

I made 2 crap gaqmes
by myself

I'd call that shitty investment.

IMO game development is a labour of love. Don't do it for the money, because there's no guarantee of any.
5

think of it as a hobby, instead of playing other ppls games you play with making your own

user92578
@jgallant Well I made a game, but I didn't make any money

eh, you didn't sell ?
wait man, once you get it on a sale, you are gonna sell 200 copies in a day

currently i've a work , but i want during the next two or three years to be done with building my own business

user92578
yeah summer sales here I come

10:55 AM
^ that

then you can get blow and hookers!! oh yeah

then i be dedicated with full time with the next step

The wolf of game dev.

user92578
Have you done any gamedev Jason?

I made about 1000$
bling bling

10:56 AM
@Jason4Ever Start doing it. Keep doing it. If you don't get tired of it, think about making it your job. Don't expect immediate returns on your invested time.

@jgallant how does it compare to average monthly salary in your country? ;-)

@doppelgreener Even if you work for a AAA game dev company.

actually not yet , but learned 3ds Max since 1 year , then i started some time with Unity3D

its pretty bad

@Kromster one week

10:56 AM
one week is about right.

I earned like 10 bucks

and 100 death threats

you really needed to filter the workshop better

user92578
steamapi for that stuff is terrible

@JohnHamilton how.

10:58 AM
they claim to be working on it

If I could pull ALL THE DATA quickly

vote-on-stuff style with actual curation

and do it myself on a local copy that would rock
But it takes literally 3 seconds per 50 items
and @ 3500 items that is getting stupid
There is vote on stuff
default is sorted by best ratings

naw that's not what I mean
some games have that system, I don't have access to steam right now
so I can't link the workshops

oh you mean the workshop browser in steam?

11:00 AM
people vote on the stuff they want in the game, rather than trying them in the game and then voting on them

yeah
that wouldn't work for me

then the game's developer gets to choose which ones are in

how can you vote on a puzzle that you can't see?
Ultimately, i think there is a pretty good quantity/quality balance right now
I check the new puzzles everyday and delete shit.

dick puzzles will plague your system forever

no doubt.

11:02 AM
and it'll only get more and more, you'll have to stop at some point

strangely i only got one titty
and over 100 dicks

i am going to download your game, make a puzzle that is shaped like a 💩, make it actually super awesome, and call it "this puzzle is crap"

lol do it.
one I thought was kinda funny, whe you complete the level it says "bush did 911"

what I'm thinking is the curation of the puzzles Jon as opposed to the "free" workshop experience
not everyone wants to try out stupid crap people thought were funny and decided to vote up

11:04 AM
yeah, i considered doing this

you could make compilations and put them in as paid content from the workshop items, pay people 1% for every puzzle they have in a 50 puzzle pack for example

@jgallant paywall DLC so you have to pay 99c to upload puzzles

That was my experience with modeling since 1 year lol

i can't charge to get people to play user content.
@Jason4Ever cool robot bro
I could wipe out the workshop -- claim all the puzzles as my own and rerelease the game like nothing ever happeend.

11:06 AM
@jgallant you're thinking like a developer. think like the opportunist you need to be :o

so with 3d models
how many models does your game need, how long does it take you to make them, rig them, animate them
can you justifiably create everything your game needs by yourself with 3d in a reasonable amount of time? something to think about ;)

user92578
^ what I was about to type

^^
What I was thinking

even Super Meat Boy was made over a couple of years between two people

that'd be a pretty shitty thing to do, but re-releasing the puzzles under a compilation and letting people pay for it, would be a different thing

11:07 AM
And that followed on from a Flash game which itself took a while to make.

Even duke nukem forever took 18 years to make with multiple different people.

I'm not saying remove them from the workshop, people can still play those for free

@ChrisMcFarland i have animated this robo before

it'd be like a "donate to the dev" button

The point being made is -- we all learned the hard way how long it takes to actually finish a game.
3

11:07 AM
Yeah

Look at Pearson here, he has no idea he still has 14 years to go

user92578
but what about the enemies the robo will fight?

user92578
what about the environments?

@jgallant Duke Nukem Forever is not a good example of how a game should be made or how long it should take though. :P

Did you see the demo that was shown originally ?
I wish they had released that game back then

11:09 AM
they probably had zero content in the game other than the demo

@jgallant bro are you developing your games alone ? (Modeling, Coding,..etc) ?\

2d
and yeah, i work alone

he's not modelling anything

I read some of the exit interviews by DNF staff who left the team, and one of them said they had co-workers who were working on a specific part of a specific level when they joined the team -- and when they left the job, those co-workers were still working on the same part of the same level, because the directors were being perfectionists and complacent, or because they'd taken so long technology had moved ahead and things needed updates.

11:10 AM
This looked amazing for 2001

dude, it's duke nukem, what are you thinking so hard for, lol

yeah i heard the project lead scraped everything over and over
He wanted to be bleeding edge

and surely they bled for it

Burned through all their resources.
Entire project was scraped -- team was fired then they sold the IP
And then they released something else.
Something that literally killed the IP.

[cough star citizen cough]

11:12 AM
@jgallant and usually how much it take the intermediate game from you to be done ? and what type is it ? Mobile or ... ?

Picross Touch and GORB are my games

star citizen is coming along nicely though? they don't seem too hung over on design etc.

You can see how simple they are in nature -- this is a hobby I also have a full time job

@jgallant haaaa, that's right. they tried to make another Duke Nukem game, and then Gearbox sued them saying "uhh, no, you're not doing that, we bought Duke Nukem. You can't keep making games with him."

So about 8 months.
Picross Touch I still revise.

11:14 AM
@Jason4Ever search Gravitrators in google play, that's the one I made. It took two and a half months of coding and a month or so of graphics work by my friend. I worked almost full time on it tho

PC/Mac/Linux/Android/IOS

@JohnHamilton they are exactly hung over on design. they are revising assets with no scope of resource budget, and there are interviews with current (anonymous) and former staff members saying they're doing similar things to what we were just talking about for DNF. Star Citizen at this point has a business model based on the game being vaporware.

I'm still trying to finish it... The scoreboard needs a LOT of revision

Yeah...
I read up on star citizen as well.. it is looking bad.

Star Citizen has delayed its release date by a year every year, and then they went public with their development timeline with a 2-year outlook, and it doesn't have a release date marked anywhere on it.

11:15 AM
oh, I hadn't really looked into it. I just saw some gameplay videos by youtubers etc. not my kind of game so I didn't care for it

Imagine if hello games announced NMS2

@JohnHamilton what about you John

user92578
I think there is a reason why a lot of indie games are 2D, at least those made by a single dude

ehhh, yeah.

@Tyyppi_77 2 dimensions mean far less work than 3, quite often.

11:17 AM
@Jason4Ever I did tell you though, scroll up a bit
2D is much easier to deal with than 3D and often means much lower specs are needed to run them
also, there's the possibility of the mobile market

I've got an idea (and some art and writing work done) for a game I'd like to make, and it's in the vein of Devil May Cry, so I'm torn between 2D vs 3D vs Klonoa-style 2.5D.

ohhhh the amazing mobile market!

lol NMS2 - good luck.

3D looks shite on mobile, but 2D can look pretty nice

Joe Danger DLC for NMS

user92578
11:18 AM
lol the great mobile market

yes but usually the 3d brings the players like Robot War by pixonic

user92578
what? I'd claim that that's not how it works

which as i expect offer a better chance for money ?

Making a 3D game means spending more time, more time means more chances to screw things up. If your game is bad, you get nothing.
Unless you have a huge marketing department that can push the shite like pokemon go

dude, i spent a day trying to fix a drop down box that crashed my game
think about it

11:20 AM
@Jason4Ever With 3d you add a dimension of problem. It will cost you more; if you don't make money with your gamble, you will have lost more money.

start small
learn what you can and can't do
adjust

user92578
My first game, a platformer, took 3 years. Sure, it wasn't all time very effeciently spent, but still.

Don't go making a battle arena 3d game when you have no idea what you are doing

Even Nintendo made a 2D version of BOTW to see if it was viable at that scale.

that looks fun too

11:21 AM
It's such a fucking good game.

the 2d version i meant

Aye it does look fun.

link?!

BOTW is fun, but replayability? I am not so sure
Now that I explored everything i'm kinda left with a ... meh
Seen it, done it.

11:22 AM
I'm currently skirting around the fire area cuz I don't have fire resist stuff yet

@jgallant open world games in a nutshell, unless they're one of the elder scrolls series

@ChrisMcFarland oh man i envy you :P
I'm OP right now in my gamae

@Blue thanks

@ChrisMcFarland Hey I wanted to ask: are you indie full time, or do you have a day job too?

The Making of series is wonderful too.
Great way to spend 30-40 minutes.

11:24 AM
@AlexandreVaillancourt I'm full time as full as I can get, kind of a homemaker at times

I could listen to the music all day, there's something about Nintendo's composition in this game which really brings emotion.

dropping kid off at school, pickup, sorting out food and stuff

@ChrisMcFarland I envy you... I'll get a lifestyle like that someday...

@ChrisMcFarland - you'll need some fire resist elixirs / chilled food to make your way up and then you can get some armour in the quarry while you're up there, easiest way to get what you need.

if i could afford it I would do it

11:25 AM
@ChrisMcFarland All right, cool!

what abouth dental and health insurance?

dental insurance? in NZ? ahaha no :(
I pay a little for premium healthcare
cuz in NZ it's free, but there's a waiting list for the public system - stuff being in pain for 6+ weeks if you need assistance

Yeah I mean for like medication
So no dental insurance there? Dental work here is ridiculously expensive, it is crazy.
Like it is so expensive it is mental.

It's about to get worse in the USA I hear

in NZ if you're in extreme pain you can go down to the local hospital and get your teeth worked on for free

11:30 AM
not here, they send you to a dentist
and you pay extra because it is an emergency
like, double

the insurance policies though have annual caps for how much they'll give you though, so it's like mehhh not worth the cost
but yeah, running your own small business, it's stressful
every waking moment is like, oh man i should be working on my game
what's that? real life commitments getting in the way? whelp

Yeah and like doing it as a hobby is really not -- got a bug? who cares.
Don't want to code that bit? Don't do it then. WAnt to work on something else for the hell of it? Why not.

on the plus side, anything game-related is a business expense, hardware, games for game research, portion of house costs, utilities, less tax to pay at the end of the year
Oh yeah, I tackle bugs. My game came out 2 years ago and I still fix things if someone happens to find something lol

crazy how they always find something
especially with unity.
new bug -- started with 5.6

Or some things, it's not even a bug, just the way something is
and nobody bothers to mention it for a couple years
then someone is like "I don't like this!" and I try to amend where feasible

11:34 AM
when you play fullscreen in linux, either the mouse cursor, or the colliders get all messed up
going windowed is fine.

Pretty sure its a ratio thing.
but unity is a black box.

I notice some collider issues in the Editor if I pause/unpause, like the physics goes fucked for a moment

what is pause?

dunno if it would happen if the game paused/unpaused for the standalone version

11:35 AM
oh the editor pause.

do you have any scripts that run in edit mode?

it's like all the rigidbodies jerk a little, or even just resizing the window
For Tallowmere 2 I have a few MenuItem scripts I like to use
setting build types and stuff and running builds by clicking a menu item is very time-saving

yeah to refresh objects on the fly
i used that a lot in GORB for the editor

nice, yeah it's handy writing a few lines to save you X amount of minutes time and time again

11:37 AM
well, you can re-use a Init() function

@Jason4Ever 3D is not a magic wand with which you hit a game to make it make more money for you.
2
Good games that have good marketing make money (probably). Extraordinary games and/or those with extraordinary marketing make an extraordinary amount of money (probably). However, good games and good marketing also cost a lot to produce; extraordinary games with extraordinary marketing cost an extraordinary amount of money to produce. It is very real that even breaking even money-wise is an achievement in game development.
Some games make a lot of money, but not enough to cover the time or money you put into them. Many of those games are 3D! Many of those games that were 3D would have been more profitable if they were 2D!
Focus on making a game that is fun and enjoyable. (Even for values of "fun and enjoyable" such as those found in LIMBO or Amnesia: The Dark Descent or Resident Evil VII.) If the game needs to be 3D to make that happen, make it 3D. If it needs to be 2D to make that happen, make it 2D.

^ I disagree, if it doesn't need to be 3D to be fun, then don't make it 3D.

@JohnHamilton I agree with you there.
If a game doesn't need to be 3D, avoid making it 3D, because you're adding a frankly enormous level of complexity in doing so that you're better off not having.
Not "twice as complex", more like "ten times as complex".
And complexity = more cost and your game takes longer

I'm a bit sad that STRAFE is getting mixed reviews: store.steampowered.com/app/442780/STRAFE
cuz it looks fun and silly

For our game it was a lot easier to create 3d world (game is 2.5d) as the things we wanted to do visually required 3d, we tried to do that in 2d at first but failed

11:45 AM
^ trying to do it 2D and failing and then upgrading is usually more profitable than trying to do it 3D and failing, then falling back to 2D

@JohnHamilton Thanks, that's a good way to resolve my own indecision. I'll go with 2D and pixel art first off.

we actually did it in 3d at first, but there was a (very very very stupid - if you ask me - ) decision to start making it in 2d, then went back to 3d again
I think the problem was that the guy most strongly wanting to go 2d had been working only on (successful) 2d games previously

Yeah, that's another problem people face everyday. If you're proficient with a hammer, it doesn't mean you should use it to do the work of a screwdriver.
Btw STRAFE looked like it could do very well, where did they go wrong?

Here's the current result as a shot from my unity player

@JohnHamilton reviews indicate the gameplay sucks and don't live up to the nostalgia factor they were going for in their marketing
@Lasse nice. definitely seems like a good concept for 3D.

11:53 AM
I'd prefer it in 2D simply cuz my phone can't handle the game after the second area unlocks
but it looks good, and I'd love to see it on PC without the free to play part

I'm hoping to see it on PC too one day
and yeah, it's pretty hardcore in graphics, I've done crapton of optimizing for it to run in our low-end target

Anyone know whether Sid Meier is still making games himself or just consulting on his games?

dat cheat button <3

@Lasse mine is a bit old, it's the first GM discovery model

it's currently prone to crash if the phone has only 1gb ram

11:56 AM
:(

the crappiest device in our office is samsung s4 mini, which we have been testing it on. I think we should get a device with 1gb ram just to be able to support it, but my requests have not been heard yet :(

ehh, you can't get everything you want :P
I'll just hope for the PC release since I don't plan on upgrading

Politically Correct version?

@JohnHamilton Firaxis Games's site has a credit list of games he's been involved in, and he isn't listed at all for any civilisation game since the first one except for Civ: Revolution.

well, we just got galaxy tab s3 today (800 euros) so I'm still thinking where's my lenovo tab 3 with 1gb ram which is just 80 euros

11:59 AM
naw Pleasantly Corrupt version

so it's not a big request in my opinion :D

@doppelgreener Thanks, I'll check it out at home, can't access the site right now xD

Aww geez, you didn't have to do that :D

you know why they put Sid Meier's on the box?
Robin Williams.

12:01 PM
Yeah, I'm expecting something like a Railroads again

It crashes on my PC when I run it for about half an hour...

Why not just label the game as "Sid Meier's"
and make it about everything in the universe

"We were at dinner at a Software Publishers Association meeting, and [actor] Robin Williams was there. And he kept us in stitches for two hours. And he turns to me and says 'Bill, you should put Sid's name on a couple of these boxes, and promote him as the star.' And that's how Sid's name got on Pirates, and Civilization."

Hey, it was effective as a means to sell the game lol

12:04 PM
i'm just giving you some random trivia knowledge
i know a lot of stupid shit
when we play trivia my gf is alwasy like "how the hell did you know that" and I seriously have no idea how I know but I do

Quest for Glory: So You Want to Be a Hero (originally known as Hero's Quest: So You Want to Be a Hero) is an adventure game/role-playing game hybrid, designed by Lori Ann Cole and published by Sierra On-Line. It is the first game in the Quest for Glory series, and has been credited for being a genre-defining game, as it tried to mix graphical adventure gaming with role-playing-like elements such as statistic building (strength, intelligence, health) that would actually affect the ability to accomplish certain parts of the game. The game has a satirical and silly tone. == Gameplay == The original...

No one is going to allow that to happen ultimately -- it will be taken by force.
