Using particles...
That too...

how expensive do you think it is ?

Unity?

Hello people!

o/

> [803344] Text Rendering: Fixed case of text occasionally sampling beyond the spacing between adjacent glyphs by adding a default 1 texel padding around all glyphs in dynamic font textures.
I think that's the bug that is driving me crazy with text rendering...
To 5.4, or not to 5.4, that is the question...
Actually, it might not be a bad time to do it, I'm barely using the engine at all... Hmmm...

2:06 PM
I'm using 5.5 and its alright so

It's literally bug fixes lol

Experimental 2d build

@UriPopov 5.4?
Unity 5.4 seems like a whole lot more than just bug fixes...

no 5.5

Oh, well, yeah, that's all it would be for now I guess...
I'm surprised they even have a 5.5 now...

2:08 PM
I'm not even using the experimental features cause they dont work :D

50% of the page is bug fixes

Of course it is.
That doesn't mean it's all bug fixes by a long shot...
Each new feature will have multiple bugs, it's like a rule or something.
Well, I'll try 5.4 on the machine I'm on now, it's not my primary development platform, so...

5.3.5 works well for me

I'm just really curious to see if the text bug was fixed...

Who here is good with vectors?

user92578
2:16 PM
@AlanTuning Which is an awful thing and the team should stop fixing bugs immediately.

vectors as in STL, or as in geometry?

Geometry

@Garan You should probably just ask your question :)

holy christ what fun is to handle coroutines

@AlexandreVaillancourt It's a really simple question.

2:17 PM
they have the power to drive people crazy

DH.
Unity 5.4 TL;DR: I'm missing the experimental 2D stuff

Oh wait. I think I might have figure it out.

I hate coroutines.

@Garan so we don't need to be good with vectors :P

@AlexandreVaillancourt I mean "Can answer basic questions about vector operations".

2:18 PM
You need to start bug fixing your broforce clone

user92578
Well, that was fun, wasn't it?

@Almo why they are great

they seem like a weird hack
if a coroutine has a refernce to an object and when it completes the object is null, bad things happen

user92578
They seem to make some things easier with the WaitFor stuff

2:20 PM
they're just dangerous unless used really carefully

user92578
However, as threading, they seem to be quite dangerous

they're not threading
they look like threading, but are totally not

user92578
I meant "as with threading" I think

another reason I don't like them. They obscure what they're really doing.
oh ok, I get what you mean :)

user92578
Oh, also, congrats @AlexandreVaillancourt on the italics name!

2:23 PM
Ty :)

hey another room owner!
:)

Yup!
Moar ban hammers :P
Not ;)

if anything this room need less ban hammers
:P

user92578
I don't agree

user92578
Plus the suspensions are (often) automatic, given by users with enough rep

user92578
2:29 PM
And they are given for reasons

The bans are really not necessary. If everyone respects the be nice rule, there is no need for bans :)

user92578
Well yes, of course, if everyone is nice, then there's nothing to punish anyone for

DH.
I'm happy as long as I can make fart jokes

hah farts

user92578
@AlanTuning Oh, and just to clarify the misconception you seem to have, my game is obviously bug free :)

2:43 PM
Don't feed the trolls!

yeah, they come back with the claw/claw/bite
(bonus points for the reference there)

D&D I guess?

BINGO
:)

user92578
Oh, I think the person is gone

beware, calling him a troll is insulting, and just what we're trying to get him to stop doing

2:45 PM
@UriPopov Fewer* :P

I can't understand why these were so popular at one time:

yeah wtf

DH.
Those things are so ugly
Good thing they never came here

Haha :P
They were never as cool as Playmobil, which never stood a chance against Legos..

@Garan dont go there with me

2:49 PM
@UriPopov Ok.

DH.
I had 2 Lego "buckets"
Best thing ever

@AlexandreVaillancourt cool to look at when trippin

better than lego

Buckets? Like loose lego bricks?

I think i posted the wrong logo

2:51 PM
@UriPopov For some :) I think it was a bit too much tedious for my attention span!

this is the right logo

user92578
Those metal pieces with holes, right?

yep

@Darth_Vader Lol, yeah :P

@Tyyppi_77 Erector also has metal with holes

DH.
2:57 PM
@AlexandreVaillancourt I mean, there were those bucket-like filled with lego pieces, like 400 or 1000

@DH. Ah, yeah!
My Lego were stored in a suitcase so I never got to see a 'bucket'!

user4704
Mine are in several 13-gallon buckets

DH.
Well search for "Lego bucket" in google and it will show to you what I meant :P

user4704
yeah

DH.
There's probably a better name for it, but I'm not that good in English to know it

3:01 PM
Lol that's a lot of lego!

user4704
those are too small for my needs

user4704
I have an obscene amount.

@DH. Yeah I looked it up!

DH.
I don't have them anymore lol

@JoshPetrie Did you purchase them in buckets or in 'sets'?

user4704
3:03 PM
Sets, mainly.

user4704
But I'd buy them in lots from yard sales or auctions as well.

Ah kk! What did you do with so much?

user4704
Build stuff.

user4704
I didn't always have that much, I mean it took most of my lifetime to amass the collection.

Yeah, I just mean that one generally don't buys legos just to hoard them :p gotta use them ;)
I bought that one yesterday on ebay...

user4704
3:09 PM
I mostly bought them to hoard them over the last two years :P I didn't have a good place to really spread out and build them. So I'd just build the sets I got and then chunk them into the bins after a while.

Haven't played with legos for a while though!
Yeah, the sets can be fun if you have a bunch and have a spot to display them!

user4704
I have a room upstairs in our new house though that has sufficient space, although I'll need to get a good table up there and fix the insulation first (it gets really hot since it is basically an attic bedroom)

Ah, yeah, it doesn't look fun to spend hours in there when it's too hot (or too cold)!
I have no room for Legos, so now I'm building crap in starbound :P

user92578
I make games

@Tyyppi_77 Good choice, not much to gain in building virtual cities :)

3:24 PM
LOL.
In order I would rather make games than play games, and play games than watch games being played.
I find that often the order is exactly reversed for many people.

Yeah, me too, however I think it's related to what you do as a day-job. If your job is to think hard 8 hours a day, the brain tends to chose easier stuff to do when you get home...

Sometimes I start playing clash royale and I think "fuck all I do is work, make games at home and play super-competitive games"

user92578
It's cheaper to watch games being played.

rokit leeg, clash royale, lol...
I play very little that's "easy"
right now that would be Hay Day, Covet and League of ANgels fire raiders

@Almo constant pressure :P

3:28 PM
:)

@AlexandreVaillancourt This is true, but I usually have my easier stuff be something like watching TV or reading a book.

@PearsonArtPhoto ah, for me it's playing games!
I enjoyed reading books before I had access to unlimited games :P

Playing games is something I'll sometimes do.
I try to limit it, because I know if I play too many games, my own games will never get built...

When you get burnt so you flag the message lol

@PearsonArtPhoto Yeah, I know what you mean :) I tend to chose a game that has an end, so I can go do something else when I'm done!

user92578
3:44 PM
@AlanTuning Welcome back to the ignore list. Apparently it was not a good idea to give you a second (or third?) chance.

Q: How to make a cleaning like dumb ways to die cleaning a vomit in unity for Android

JarellGabonHow can i make a dumb ways to die like game? The cleaning of vomit part. https://youtu.be/DOXMzqHqNwQ?t=91

@JoshPetrie did you get an email from this guy?

user92578
why do you ask?

Jon
he emailed me

user4704
I did not.

user92578
oh lol, what'd he say?

Jon
3:49 PM
Ive commented some thoughts about my question hehe ill really appreciate if you help me and edit that thumb down of yours hehe thanks

user92578
lol

user92578
Why are the names displayed on the box though?

user92578
Like does it actually matter who voted?

Jon
yeah it does that all the time

user92578
I know

user4704
3:51 PM
@Tyyppi_77 Yes.

user92578
Okay, please educate me on "why?".

user4704
There's a couple reasons it is useful.

user4704
It's good to know if a question was closed via community, dupehammer, or mod votes, for examples.

user4704
It's useful to be able to address the people who voted directly if there is a dispute about whether or not the question should have been closed.

user92578
Ah, I see, yeah that makes a lot of sense.

user4704
3:54 PM
Most of all, though, having the votes be public discourages close-voting as a superdownvote.

user4704
By making your vote public you are held accountable for it. And unlike a downvote, there are rules about what should and shouldn't be closed.

@AlexandreVaillancourt The problem is, I like the open ended games more...

@PearsonArtPhoto Yeah; me too :(

I'm a huge fan of Extra Credits, but I refuse to watch any of the "Games you might not have tried" episodes.

Sesame Credits shudder
that's some real-live evil right there

3:59 PM
@Almo It is. Life's going to become a hell for some people.

Sie
So as far as video game footage and fair use goes how does that work? Like my video is currently around the 10 minute mark and if I were to only show strictly relevant footage I'm not sure what else I could put to fill the void. Really just trying to stay within fair use here.

@AlexandreVaillancourt how do you dislodge a system like that once it's started
disagreements about economic models aside, that's some seriously oppressive stuff

@Almo Revolution! Kill the head of the country and start over again. Good luck.

Sie
4:24 PM
Why do you guys suppose we don't see a whole lot of racing games from indie developers or really much in general? I mean they are still out there but back in the PS2/GameCube era I remember they were very popular but nowadays not so much it seems.

I'd never tackle a racing game indie because it's too much work. That's just me though.
I can't say why others don't.

They tend to be the type of game that good graphics are required.
And it's somewhat difficult to come up with a unique racing game, at least from my point of view.

Sie
I suppose but it seems like racing games in general are less relevant. When I was growing up with my PS2 series like Need for Speed, Midnight Club, and some others I can't really recall at the moment were dime a dozen. There were a lot of them. Some good and some not so good. However it seems like for the most part they have lost a lot of popularity.

Mario Kart?
Who can compete with that?

Wipeout man
but as I said earlier, I prefer to play really fucking hard games. I did enjoy Double Dash though. Good fun

4:28 PM
For a racing game, you have two choices, top down or 3-d. The 3-d racing games are hard, from a graphics perspective.

Sie
Well I guess you could count Mario Kart but even still it seems in general they've lost popularity. I think it was just a fad to an extent. Even nowadays outside of niche racing simulators and some odd ones they are just so much less common.
@PearsonArtPhoto True. Plus you have to deal with designing your own cars, AI, and etc.

Yeah. It's not the hardest kind of AI to design, but...

Sie
Depends on how advanced you want it to be.

I'm only a few steps away from having my next step be to develop a simple AI system for my game...
Essentially, each city will be able to decide what it's priorities are as to what to produce.

5:31 PM
Wow @JoshPetrie you have an answer with a -1 score!

user4704
I have quite a few.

Jon
hehe
it happens

user4704
Oh, the sprite one? Yeah, it's maybe too long for the question but shrug

user4704
I think the other answer is worse but somebody already downvoted that one too, and it's not that bad. If I were a betting man I'd say somebody just came through and downvoted the whole thread.

The other answer also has a -1 so it's probably that someone grumpy passed by these :P

user4704
5:34 PM
Although the question itself is at 0. Maybe it was the asker :D

We should just give him two more downvotes so he can get a badge for deleting it.

DH.
Probably

I doubt it, he has only 1 rep!

user4704
Heh. I have that badge but I have no idea what I deleted for it.

user4704
I have a +5 deleted answer in here.

user4704
5:39 PM
Okay it's not in the first 15 pages I give up.

That's 50 rep that you sacrificed!

user4704
Pretty sure that's peanuts :D

Hehe yeah, it is :)

Sie
Some days I just have no motivation when it comes to game dev at all.

We've all been there...
I just got notice from Google that I need to update the API for one of my apps...
Which means a lot of work... Sigh.

DH.
5:45 PM
I have no motivation most of my days

Q: Remove or Overhaul Reputation in Documentation

Spencer WieczorekI think I can speak for many users to state that the current system of reputation gain from Documentation is implemented such that users can take advantage of it for easy reputation gain. I've seen many users make very minor edits, some do not help improve the quality, on many of the popular exam...

wow SO:Doc is a mess

Sie
Interesting. So I picked up this game called "Dance Factory" for the PS2 and apparently how it works is you load the game up, it loads itself into memory, and then you can insert your own music CD and it lets you play a game based off of that.
I didn't know that any retail games had hot swapping like that. I know the cheat discs used a similar method.

Look for "Simon Goodwin" in the credits.
great guy, sharp programmer

user4704
@Almo It's really... scattered.

I'm not surprised...

5:53 PM
they had to swap the up and down arrows' positions to avoid suit by konami

user4704
I tried contributing to vim for a while, it seems too easy to end up with duplicated documentation and random scattered trivia.

@JoshPetrie yeah :(
Almost seems like they learned nothing from SO about player behavior

user4704
I don't care one bit about the reputation BS associated with it; I think people are overly concerned about it.

DH.
The documentation is a bit worse than what I had in mind...

Sie
@Almo I was about to say the box art even looks very similar to DDR.

5:54 PM
:D

Sie
I'm thinking about doing a video on it maybe. I wonder if he might be willing to do a small interview type thing.

as a DDR player, the swapped arrows were a deal-breaker
Konami knew it
no way you could play both those games at a high level

Sie
Hi website looks fairly dated. Do you know if he has a LinkedIn account? Not seeing a contact area on his site.
Wow he seems like quite the game dev. veteran.
Well I found his Twitter but he doesn't' seem active.
@Almo So did you work on any projects with him or how did you know him?

Unity 5.4: "iOS: Upgraded the minimum supported iOS version to 7.0. iOS 6 is no longer supported." Wow. They supported 6 a long time.
I worked with him at ATD in 2002.
he was doing ripple reflection and heat haze at 60FPS on PS2 for a anti-grav bike shooter we were making
and yes, his website is outdated :)
I think he's still at CodeMasters, where he made DanceFactory
I think that was his first project after ATD folded with its parent group

Sie
I found his LinkedIn. It seems like he is working at "Principal Audio Programmer, DTS Inc."

6:01 PM
ah so not at CM anymore

Sie
@Josh If I'm not allowed to post that let me know.

you can see my recommendation for him at linked in :)

user4704
Why wouldn't you be?

Kind of guy who loved fucking around with 20-year-old computer hardware.

Sie
@JoshPetrie Well I'm not really sure what the rules are regarding privacy here.

6:03 PM
linked in is public

user4704
It's public.

so... it's not a privacy issue to post linked in links. But nice of you to ask.

Counterpoint: If someone goes by a random nick then posting their personally identifying... anything is of course bad =p

Sie
@Almo You've worked on PS2 titles, right?
Wait you just said so.

I worked on one.
well, two
both died due to death of company making them
did the controls and camera for the antigrav bike... was lots of fun to fly that thing

Sie
6:06 PM
I wanted to ask why engines like Renderware and the likes got used often. I asked Mick about it and basically he told me that you kind of had to write the graphics from the ground up and basically Renderware (as it's name implies) was a renderer that did a lot of the heavy lifting. Is that about right?

people doing the demo vid were pulling shit I hadn't thought possible
yeah that's right
PS2 dev kits (early on, at least) came blank with no renderer.

Sie
How does it compare to something like an Xbox (original)? I remember hearing over and over back in the day how a lot developers loved it as it was basically a PC in a box so porting was much easier for it.

In a component based architecture, if component A needs component B to do some stuff, what is the expected behaviour of the system if component B becomes no longer available? Should the component A just decides "oh well" we'll make do without it? Or should the system crash, or it depends on what I want?

user4704
The last option.

Thought so :P

user4704
6:14 PM
ideally you would build the system such that it can't happen; track the dependencies somehow

user4704
sometimes that is expensive though

It's related to what we talked about last week. The 'link' to component B is currently done via a shared_ptr, so component B will always be available at least as long as component A is (but potentially not rightfully so).

Sie
Well I'm going to test it out now on my PS3. I know the PS3 (mine anyway) has backwards compatibility support but no idea if it supports PS2 hardware like the eyetoy.

@Sie I don't know what the Xbox is like, beyond that it used Motorola G5s, so early dev kits were Macs.
2

Really?

user4704
6:18 PM
Yeah. This is a good example of why a shared_ptr looks like the right solution but maybe isn't. If (as is common), some "system" is the thing that goes "foreach PositionComponent, update position based on velocity" for example.... and the rendering component depends on the position component via shared_ptr... and then position updating system drops the reference to the position component because it is "deleted"

user4704
...you didn't solve the bug.

user4704
You just change the bug's behavior slightly, maybe.

user4704
Because the render component holds the "dead" position component and keeps merrily rendering

I thought it was bad enough that to do Apple products you had to have a Apple PC, but an Apple PC required for X-box? Wow...

user4704
But the position is never updated again

Sie
6:19 PM
@Almo Ah. Well I just remember that particular thing that was going around. I mean modern consoles are very close to PC's but the original Xbox (correct me if I'm wrong) was very akin to what you'd find in a higher end PC at the time.

@PearsonArtPhoto yup, really. Was hilarious, actually.

Sie
@PearsonArtPhoto That's really bizarre.

PS2/PS3 were "weird" architecture. Xboxes have been largely pc-like

user4704
That's not that fundamentally different to just "ignoring" the render update if it's null. It's still potentially hard to see.

Sie
@Almo See. This is why I love SE and the internet. I mean really who would have known I bought this little game at the thrift shop, brought it home, wanted to review it, told you and then you knew one of the developers?
The internet really does make the world seem so small at times.

@JoshPetrie Yeah; that's why I'd probably suggest in this kind of situation to use a weak_ptr to component B; if it's still valid, use it, otherwise, raise an flag due to a logic error and have the dev debug it, or change the behaviour (e.g. do nothing).

Sie
@PearsonArtPhoto Xbox 2? Did they scrap that in favor of the 360?

I'm sure it was a renaming thing.

@Sie :)

user4704
6:23 PM
Yeah, I'd make something complain loudly and obviously that some kind of logic error has occurred.

xobx one is the dumbest name ever

user4704
Xbox One. Windows 10. Counting is hard.
7

Sie
I guess they just wanted to move as far away from Windows 8 as possible.

user4704
"10 worked great for Apple?"

Sie
You're hired.

user4704
6:25 PM
It was actually something along the lines of it being the "last version" and a rumor about string-begins-with checks for "Windows 9" to check for 9x

I believe the string search one for sure

That deserves to be a hit on Reddit. That's the kind of stuff they eat up...

@PearsonArtPhoto Wasn't that at the time where Apple was in deep financial trouble? and Bill came 'to the rescue'?

Sie
@PearsonArtPhoto I saw your link over in the Unity subreddit. I forgot I had you tagged lol.

The AI one?
Nah, Apple in 2004 was actually doing pretty decent.

Sie
6:31 PM
Ya.
Quill is a pretty cool guy.

Yeah, I find that posting Quill's videos occasionally is good for him, and gets me a lot of reddit karma.

Sie
When I first started learning Unity I remember watching some videos of his.

DH.
Quill who?

Quill18
He's a pretty well know YouTuber, who is also known for putting together what is probably the best series of YouTube tutorials on Unity for the intermediate to advanced user.
SebastianLeague is in competition as well.

Sie
If you like Quill you might also want to look into cooking with unity. He does intermediate to advanced stuff. However he hasn't uploaded in a while but he is still active on Reddit.

6:34 PM
I think I've seen that as well, although I'm not as careful of a follower.

Sie
He's a mod on the Unity subreddit. Drakfye? Not sure on spelling of it.
@Almo So I'm probably going to reach out to him once I get some footage and a video up and running. If I say @Almo told me about you will he know who I'm talking about?

@JoshPetrie Yeah, unless it's expected.

he should, yes. :)

Sie
Alright sounds cool. Thanks :).
Just wasn't sure if Almo was your name or screen name or what is all.

Q: Combine seperate R, G & B images into the correctly coloured image?

EpicMinecartzThe game in question is Toy Story 2 from 2003 I'm not too sure about how it's rendered. Other than I believe the game converts .raw files to .bmp As you can see from the above images, all three use different colours. They were extracted from the source textures of a game, to what I assume is 3...

6:43 PM
@Sie yeah, it has been since 7th grade
One word I love in music: "melancholy"
hmm this looks off topic

Q: Questions regarding game designers and game programmers

TimMy main goal is to create games which is why im planning on studying IT so i can later on be a game developer/programmer.My question is,does a game programmer get involved in the game designing process or is that only the game designer's job.Is a game designer always in needed or can the game pro...

@Sie This was used in the Monster Rancher game long ago to unlock monsters.

"Scripting: Using GameObject.AddComponent<MonoBehaviour> is no longer allowed and will throw an exception. Derive a class from MonoBehaviour and add it instead."
oh... I was confused. not as big a change as i thought

Jon
yeah you shouldn't be adding a blank monobehaviour via script anyways

user4704
@Almo It might be, but I'm not sure.

yeah it's borderline

user4704
6:56 PM
I can't recall where we landed on questions where "it depends" is the answer, but my personal stance is that they're fine.

ah, nice edit :)

user4704
And they're asking about the industry in general, not a specific company.

Sie
@Noctrine How would that work? Like I remember there were these old demo discs called Jam Pak and sometimes they'd have bonus content for games like Metal Gear Solid and what'd you do is insert, and then it'd save the files to the memory card or maybe modify the existing save file with the new content.
