Why the fuck do church meetings last for like 20 years

user92578
church meeting is probably not the correct word, but you get the idea

church meeting of 20 years?

9:03 AM
I do, I however don't know the right word
Where they get together and vote what "new revalations" they will tell their followers and such things

must be the spanish inquisition

user92578
Yeah, exactly that Kevin

ah, hmm
not a chapter...

I wanna say get-together, I don't know why my brain keeps providing that word
smacks brain

I've haerd about those rrevalations

9:05 AM
I know they have some special word for it

user92578
I mean like in 1545 they tried to unite the protestants and the catholics

they r kite revaling indeed

user92578
So they setup a meeting in Trenton

user92578
And then they discussed it (the protestants didn't show up, but anyways) for 20 years

user92578
The Council of Trent is the name for that it seems

user92578
9:06 AM
ecumenical council

user92578
That's the word I believe

Yes! Where ecumenical means it's between different sects

user92578
Where sect means..?

user92578
ah a subgroup of a religion group thingy

Yeah, all the different forms of christianity are different sects of christianity
There's also a term christians coined that basically means "sect of christianity and by definition good and shut-up it's different from sect deal with it" because sect is usually a slightly negative term

user92578
9:14 AM
:D

user92578
Okay that was religion stuff

user92578
Now, some physics

lol

user92578
All this stuff I have to write

user92578
At least physics ain't so boring

9:18 AM
I've been fixing a semi-critical bug that a customer reported to me today

user92578
Any luck?

user92578
Oh and also I meant to ask you, how many bug reports do you get from the players or do you notice most of the stuff yourself?

Yup. The slow, boring part is then compiling and testing on all platforms

user92578
Ah, good :)

Most gameplay bugs are pretty rare. Biggest ones I had to fix up post-release were a couple of savegame loading issues
I try my hardest to ensure my builds are bug-free
during my beta versions, there was an extremely long-standing bug that slipped by me, items would disappear

9:22 AM
What caused it?

@Chris You're still working on Tallowmere?

I think I forgot to change the parent of an item from the merchant to the hero or something

12 hours ago, by Almo
0 bugs in the code on the wall, 0 bugs in the code. Take one down, pass it around, 65535 bugs in the code on the wall.

hey guys

@Jovito Yeah, here and there, not heaps though. Released a new enemy a couple of days ago

user92578
9:23 AM
if I need to do a (N, F) coordinate system, that means that N is on the x, right?

@NathanDrake Hello

user92578
Hi

whatsup
:)

user92578
On a break between classes, doing school stuff and procrastinating here

9:24 AM
cool

hehe

is anybody work with XNA here ?

@Chris That must make you feel great. I know I would.

user92578
Does Excel want dots or commas by default?

9:27 AM
@Jovito Yeah, it's a cool feeling. Something you make and others discuss. It's cool. Admittedly I became kinda jaded after a month of reading and listening, but I appreciate people's time and effort sharing their opinions!
I think my fav review was...

@NathanDrake I've had experience with it years ago when it was still a supported thing

user92578
Commas it seems

unfortunately i couldn't implement correctly

user92578
I know a lot less about Excel than I thought I do

9:29 AM
@Hjorthenify Heeyy I tried this library now code.google.com/p/pytmxloader it is super awesome :) It was a link in the link you gave me ^^ thank you!

@Chris I saw a video from the Gamesoup guys playing it, but they couldn't get out of a room for some reason.

I'd assume he's not pressing the button that is being shown on the screen? bottom-left says press Y

@Tyyppi_77 Depends on the language installed

user92578
Yeah I suppose so

Which is the dumbest decision ever made
Localized function names

9:34 AM
heh

@Hjorthenify yessssssssss

@Don'tclickonmyprofile You're welcome

At least they were sane enough to store it in one language so you can open it in any other

Its still very silly
Especially because some of the danish translations makes no sense

Yeah, the dutch ones don't either

9:37 AM
@Chris How much time did you spend on it so far?

Started the prototype in December 2013, so it's coming up 2 years almost. Past year has been on and off though, but yeah, a lot of time lol

nice

Is it your day job now or?

I'm still a stay-at-home dad

9:41 AM
but, I get a bit of money each month, pretty happy with it, hard to say what the future will hold
got the majority of sales within the first month of launching
Yeah she works, a nice salary

user92578
I can't do shit with Excel anymore

Finally installed an outlet by my PC :D no more wires across the floor!

Not a pharmacist though haha

The link color is still bad isn't it =p

/pats Stylish

9:42 AM
@KevinvanderVelden Link color looks sexy from my end

user92578
I have a set of points, and I've made a line graph with those

@Chris same (heck, I made the stylish sheet on the meta =p)

Excel is terrible with graphs

user92578
How do I force the line to start at the origin?

@Hjorthenify FTFY: Excel is terrible

9:45 AM
@Tyyppi_77 Add the origin values 10 times :D

user92578
I think I'll just do this at home with a proper mouse

haha

user92578
All the time I spent in elementary school IT classes making stupid excel diagrams, and now I can't do anything anymore :(

:\
My 3yo knows how to change the discs on our Wii U console

user92578
Your son is already 3???

9:51 AM
daughter* yeah she's like 3.5 years

user92578
Oh, looks like I remembered that one wrong then

user92578
Time really flies

yeah, it truly does

user92578
I think I've got a cousin about the same age

user92578
All baby relatives (mostly girls) really like me... too bad that then girls grow older and realize that nerds aren't cool

9:53 AM
haha

user92578
And I say that in the least pedophile way that one can

Grow a beard. Girls loves beards!

There was a girl on my street growing up, we actually played games together. Looking back, I was too young to make a move though haha

user92578
My beard doesn't look that good... also I'm too young to actually have a beard and be believable

user92578
oh lol :D

9:54 AM
yeah, some guys have the magical beard touch
I'm not so lucky

user92578
Also I'm not the beard-type-guy

user92578
I'd have to be like 50kg heavier to grow a beard and look good :D (no offense if anyone happens to have a beard)

user92578
Oh why doesn't the Google Docs editor continue my numbering...

user92578
Okay, got it

user92578
I just learnt about the "context menu"-button

user92578
10:04 AM
Suuuper nice on a laptop where moving the cursor takes ages to do

user92578
Next class is starting soon so I'll get going

user92578
See you guys in a couple of hours

Hello everyone

does someone here know where i can advertise for my stackexchange proposal related to game art?

10:13 AM
The dawn is upon us.

Besides area 51?

yes

Relevant chats

without violating rules o annoying ppl
like this chat?

Yeah
Just don't spam multiple times and don't open up with the advertising =p

10:15 AM
The room is called Game Development so I'd say yes.

@KevinvanderVelden dig it

@Minzkraut all the questions you posted would be perfectly acceptable on gamedev

user92578
Yeah ^

10:24 AM
Really?

Yeah
Metal :D

I like some metal music but that song is terrible.

Lies
Sabaton is awesome

I don't know why I think this is so funny :P 9gag.com/gag/aQnv4vr

1 hour later…

11:44 AM
morning, GDSE

Good morning

user92578
11:59 AM
Hi! Finally at home

Woot

user92578
12:15 PM
aaand that was homework

user92578
GAMEDEV

Pip
noice
I still have summer homework to do... but I'm 3d printing antimatter apparently

user92578
lol

Pip
My software literally says that I have negative mass

user92578
Yeah I've tons of stuff to do but I still have a couple of weeks, so...

Pip
12:18 PM
lol
I have pages upon pages still to do
You know what... I'm going to go spend all of today working on it. Cya all later
:P

user92578
cya

user92578
have fun

Joe
good morning all

user92578
hi!

user92578
I'm thinking about ways to do collisions in the level editor

user92578
12:22 PM
One option would be to keep the Tiled way, so drawing collision boxes by hand

user92578
Another option is masking trough the foreground tiles and the mergeing boxes

user92578
That would be easier for users, but more tricky in the code

user92578
But just for that reason I think I want the second one

morning

Joe
@Chris hey man did you ever get anywhere with rendering 3d models into sprites, diablo 1 / starcraft 1 style?

12:30 PM
I got to the automatic turntable stage of taking a pose, capturing shots of all angles... but then realised the amount of work involved and thought I was in over my head lol
wasn't super enthused about the art style either, so sort of gave it a miss
I did manage to get a walking/movement sprite going, and choosing the correct sprite for the angle of the character as you'd move around

Joe
12:47 PM
interesting so 8 directions 45degree difference in direction
so you need to basically generate 8 sets of every animation?
or at least N sets based on how many directions of motion / facing you will support?

user92578
Or 4 and flip the rest

yeah. It looks like Diablo II does 16 directions for the main character, 8 for the monsters
@Tyyppi_77 Only if it's symmetrical

user92578
Ah, right

Joe
yea i was thinking about that... if you got a 2 handed axe and your right handed character slashes it
right facing front to back
left facing back to front

@Chris looks like your advice might have fixed my menu problems

Joe
12:50 PM
@Chris did the "automatic" turntable assemble the renders into a sheet for you? or did you duplicate the character 8 times at different angles?

I'll keep you posted if I run into other problems.

@Almo Sweet

Joe
@Almo is this wisdom documented somewhere? from your question before?

@Joe I had a script to just rotate the character

not yet
I'll document it once I'm sure I have everything working the way I expect

Joe
12:52 PM
no rush and TY

I'll even send you the project if you want it

Joe
absolutely i need to get a handle on this... if theres something im doing wrong id love to know and see your setup

Waaait.. Google changed their logo?

yes

user92578
WHAT

user92578
12:56 PM
THAT CANT BE HAPPENING

user92578
FUCK THIS WHEN I BECOME THE OVERLORD OF THE WORLD NOTHING IS ALLOWED TO CHANGE

Joe
its too late it happened already like thats so yesterday

user92578
Really nice!

WTF

12:58 PM
All the images are not from me but w/e I am still learning and wanted fast results lmao

<div style="background:url(/images/branding/googlelogo/2x/googlelogo_color_272x92dp.p‌ng) no-repeat;background-size:272px 92px;height:92px;width:272px" title="Google" id="hplogo" onload="window.lol&amp;&amp;lol()" align="left"><div style="color:#777;font-size:16px;font-weight:bold;position:relative;left:218px;t‌op:70px" nowrap="">Danmark</div></div>
....
Sec
Oh well.. Notice how is says window.lol&&lol()

user92578
Oh cool, I can kinda test my level

user92578
There's no collisions, and you can't get out of the test mode

user92578
But it correctly removes the editor player entity and places an actual player entity in

1:02 PM
The prelaunch one is still horrid

OMG that pre launch is awful

Joe
@Almo i would have never thought to do this

me neither
it's exactly what Chris recommended though. :)
if you have trouble setting it up, let me know and I can send you my project
it only has this menu in it right now

@Almo Your goal?

I'm making a puzzle game

Joe
1:05 PM
he meant the rocket league
lol

Was talking of the gif :P

first step: get the fucking UI to maintain its aspect ratio
@Hjorthenify oh hahaha fuck no
I'm not a bad player, but I'm not great either :)

:P
He's flying

yeah

Joe
@Hjorthenify I imagine this is the driver in that car

1:07 PM
@Joe He would probably have stopped using the turbo then :P

Oh shit. it seems to cut off stuff on iPhone 5...
because it's narrower

since we used "match height"
man this is gonna kill me

Maybe I start with iPhone 5 aspect

Joe
1:09 PM
@Almo you could do a start script? grab that component, detect screen size and change the values?

change what values though
the anchor has moved my square off the screen partially

Joe
reference resolution

hmm
I thought you had to build everything using the reference resolution so the anchors know what they're doing

Joe
probably could do a really sick one liner with 20 dot operators
@Almo i have no idea
@Chris ???

Anchors are percentage based

1:11 PM
yeah iphone 5 breaks it all
because it's narrower

pivots are percentages too. but you can adjust the X and Y padding/offsets as well, but that's pixel-based

the stuff under the vertical layout object IS working though
maybe there's hope
Will adjust that answer I put up
once i get it figured out

user92578
Player spawning for testing and editing works great now

user92578
Now I just need to implement the collision stuff

Joe
OOOO im going to this talk!

user92578
1:19 PM
Continuously integrating what to Unity?

Joe
CI is a development / build / automation process

@Tyyppi_77 ... with Unity.
Continuous integration (CI) is the practice, in software engineering, of merging all developer working copies to a shared mainline several times a day. It was first named and proposed by Grady Booch in his 1991 method, although Booch did not advocate integrating several times a day. It was adopted as part of extreme programming (XP), which did advocate integrating more than once per day, perhaps as many as tens of times per day. The main aim of CI is to prevent integration problems, referred to as "integration hell" in early descriptions of XP. CI isn't universally accepted as an improvement over...

user92578
Ohhhh

user92578
I thought it was about integrating some external thing to Unity

Basically, you check in your code to your repository, which automatically triggers a build + test script, which mails you the results once done.

user92578
1:21 PM
I kinda should've known that, now I feel a little stupid

Joe
nah its all good

The build results are typically saved (for a while), so you can pick any successful one and promote it to stable status.

Joe
it gets really fun if you start thinking about all the stuff you need to do between the "code is done for the feature XYZ" and the "does this really work on all of my platforms WIN/ MAC / Linux / Web"
can automate the crap out of the things your sick of doing 30 million times

user92578
How would I approach combining single tile collision boxes to bigger ones?

Floodfill.
Then start simplifying the result of that by picking one box and adding the next one to it, simplifying for every step, until no more boxes are in the result set.

user92578
1:24 PM
Okay, that sounds straight forward, thanks

@MartinSojka Know how to simplyfy a polygrid for pathfinding?

@Chris @Joe looks like if I put everything in Vertical Layout Groups, it works
not sure why that fixes it

@Almo that's the bitch of it all. something works but it doesn't properly make sense cuz it's so confusing >_<

yeah
hopefully the GridLayoutGroup will work for my playfield
if so, I think I'm set

Joe
im going to try and recreate it in the next week or so and make a github
if its the same problem im going to grab a unity employee in Boston and be like "YO WTF"

1:29 PM
lol

Joe
we should come up with a list.. "please add your questions and i will bring them to the proper authorities"

Bet one could make a small fortune with an HTML/CSS based GUI system for Unity (but without needing the webkit implementation)
and sell it on the asset store

you're probably right

:o
We should collaborate on that

just a mass parsing of a text field and swapping out $variables with stuff linked in a list

1:33 PM
Linked lists...

@Hjorthenify No, I would have to look for papers on that myself.

Alright :)

Joe
@Chris weve been saying this for years

I mean, I imagine it's hard
and maybe it'd be kinda barebones
but ahh

Joe
anything worth doing is

user92578
1:43 PM
Someone should make an IDE plugin that orders "width" always before "height" in the autocompletion box

@Tyyppi_77 For what use?

user92578
It's annoying because width becomes most of the times used before the height

user92578
so selecting the first item, and then the second item would result in correct behaviour

So width is used more often than height?

user92578
no

user92578
1:47 PM
always before

futureunfolding.com - looks pleasant

I just realized my student number follows the binary system. Now its going to be really easy to remember :D

:P

Since I'm studying computer science.. Is this a coincidence?

2:50 PM
When I shoot bullets in my d2 game I have a static movement on the x axis relative to the y axis. But now I want to shoot a bullet in the direction where my mouse cursor is standing. How can I approach this kind of scenario?

Vectors

user92578
Yeah

user92578
Here's some code I used in my first PyGame project:

user92578
dx1 = pos[0] - self.shooter.pos[0]
dy1 = pos[1] - self.shooter.pos[1]
rads = math.atan2(dy1, dx1)
bullet.dx = math.cos(rads) * self.speed
bullet.dy = math.sin(rads) * self.speed

user92578
As you can see, it doesn't use vectors

user92578
2:53 PM
But vectors will give you a nicer result I believe

user92578
pos is the mouse position, and shooter is the player

Vectors are more performant as well

user92578
Okay I'm really clueless on how the approach the tile collision box combining thing

user92578
I've gathered the tiles that need to be solid into a single grid

Thank you @Hjorthenify @Tyyppi_77

user92578
2:57 PM
No problem, I'm glad that someone here is finally asking the "easy" questions that even I can answer :D

user92578
Basic testing is working!

user92578

user92578
Now I just need to add everything

user92578
3:04 PM
And implement that box combining... I think

user92578
I might have to performance for not doing it

user92578
But I want to be safe

If this was drawn using some kind of rectangle drawing tool, then the editor already knows where to put a combined collision box without any complicated routines to calculate it.

user92578
True

user92578
I have a rectangle tool

user92578
3:11 PM
But most of the times I'll just be drawing individual tiles

user92578
But I'm working on a simple combining algo right now

user92578
and by simple I mean stupid

The idea is to recalc it iteratively - each time you draw or remove a box.
You start with the assumption that what you have is already a perfectly merged collision area (easily demonstrated to be true for an empty map), and then craft the iterative steps such that one perfectly merged collision area + or - a box -> another perfectly merged collision area.

@Chris You around?

user92578
Okay I think I'm starting to get the basic idea

user92578
3:17 PM

user92578
So this is one the first version I'm writing

user92578
This only generates the collision boxes once, when the level is tested

user92578
It first places a box at every solid tile

user92578
And then looks below

user92578
I'm thinking that after this I'll just look left, and combine if possible

3:20 PM
Or something similar

user92578
3:40 PM
This method of mine works:

user92578

user92578
But it's far from clean and probably even further from most effecient

user92578
aaaand it doesn't work

user92578
Looks like I just had a small bug

user92578
Sooo

user92578
3:42 PM

user92578
I wonder if this is good enough for now

user92578
Anyways, I'll call it a day, thanks to everyone who helped me today :)
