I played through the character introduction part to TWA

once the story was done, I lost interest, it became another frustrating platformer.

There is Dwarf Fortress which simulates life better than the Sims.

there's a slight difference in accessibility there though

I think of The Sims more as a dollhouse kind of game, than a direct life sim

I imagine quite a tall economic wall. The art requirements for even the most base game would mean that it would be really hard to recoup the investment - with a big competing player.

But for each different type of Sim there is a pretty decent open source community, except (as far as I've seen at least) in that particular lane.

you can do stuff per day, and everyone has to work together to survive
