12:01 AM
haha just now the hourly contest was won by 1, 3 people picked 2. 4 played total

Pip
nice

it's working the way it's supposed to

11 hours later…
Jon
10:46 AM
I wasn't able to check my gf's phone before she left... dunno if i won that hourly game or not

?

Jon
@Almo
@Almo my two biggest negative feedback for your game, you wanna hear it?

i do
and i also want to see the game

Jon
@Almo the interface is really bad
@Almo and secondly, having to enter that long alphanumeric code is a pain in the ass

Jon
11:03 AM
holy shit
someone made that skydiving game I made

heh

user92578
I've been procrastinating for two days now

Jon
such a good video.

user92578
haha

11:30 AM
@Jon damn that's awesome

@Jon nah the vid, the progressive introduction/learning and stuff, really awesome

Jon
Yeah, it was motivating for me
figured i'd share
if i was jobless, i'd do one of those write a game prototype a day for 30 days challenge
I think the next weekend that lines up, i'm gonna do a gamejam

user image
4

Jon
Yeah, that chart is priceless

11:40 AM
lol
I remember when I tried to do that gdse jam last year
and I got nothing, could not wrap my brain around starting a stressful time-limited project lol

Jon
:)
I guess that is the whole point, it forces you to get out of your comfort zone

indeed, if you can handle it :D

user92578
"Far Cry 4 gives you all the tools and elephants you could need to have a good time"

I haven't much experience with Far Cry 4, but it sounded like all the AI has enough awareness and interactivity with other AI that the AI just does silly and cool and plausible things
animals and humans and lots of playing off each other

@Chris I think jams are harder at home.
I went to a software camp where we worked for a week. Resulted in a very playable prototype. :P
You can even see it here.

@Jon 6 characters man, no numbers, so strictly speaking, it is not "alphanumberic" I did this because on iOS keyboards you have to keep switching between number and letter keyboard.
that code is to prevent bots from playing
about the interface, are you complaining about its structure, or the way it looks?
ping me because I have to leave for work now :)

Jon
@Almo the way it looks
it looks like a template

'Morning, All

Jon
ok, get ready to get your mind blown

12:24 PM
Ugh. I seriously need to set up a VPN so I can YouTube at work

No, you need to work when you're at work.
Just like Kevin should

Jon
Here is the interactive version of it

The at work bit at least, sick at home =[
And tired of lying in bed

ok, @William'MindWorX'Mariager, I need to set up a VPN so I can YouTube while my code is compiling.

Jon
12:25 PM
So the main idea for these cameras, is to create a 3d video that you could experience in a VR headset
which is going to revolutionize the film industry
You will be inside the movie

@Jon I've heard that kind of rhetoric before. I'm not sure I completely buy it. It's hard enough to ensure a good viewing experience (from the point of view of the director) when there's only one possible end viewpoint. I suspect immersive media will be a flash in the pan before everyone goes back to 2D.

Jon
i dunno.. i think if a VR helmet can get really solid, you could replace all the monitors in your house
and you could consume videos like that

I agree with that...

Jon
it would be like a holodeck

Any immersive media, for it to succeed, must be interactive.
I don't think passive immersive media will ever take off.
There's plenty of room, though, for interactive immersive media.

12:33 PM
I would feel like I'd be missing things if I were to watch a movie with that 360 stuff :P

Agreed.
And it would be somewhat tedious to "re-watch" from various different angles, just to avoid missing something.

Jon
of course
it would be like you are controlling time
you guys have really weak vision

That may be...but it may be that we understand human psychology pretty well.

Personally, I'm mostly looking forward to how the HoloLens will work.
The video is amazing, but I have to see it work before I get my hopes up :P

12:36 PM
Yeah, I think augmented reality capabilities opens it up as an even more useful device.

Jon
It will not work anywhere near as good as it shows in the videos

Certainly not at first. And probably not until it's dead and gone, and Apple revives it.

I'm just hoping for usable, perhaps in simpler situations.

(though that would take the Ghost of Jobs to accomplish, I'm sure)

12:37 PM
I would love a 3d overlay when roleplaying. Interactive battlemat.

Hm...now I kinda want to DM a game wherein everyone is actually a miniature in a living room setting...but, of course, they don't know that.

Haha
Climbing books and CD covers and escaping rolling cheese balls :P

and the occasional colossus-style giant.
it could get very meta, very quick

Maybe have the PCs take on a giant NPC, whose actions correspond directly to one of the actual human players.
...and when the PCs are victorious in "killing" the giant human, that human's PC becomes comatose or something

1:18 PM
Movies and shows use tricks to make 24 FPS look higher right? Smoothing between frames or something?

Some games do, too, if I understand correctly
The idea is that the "blur" is caught on film during that 1/24 s, so there aren't tearing artifacts.

@William'MindWorX'Mariager those aren't tricks, that's the act of recording a real thing =p

Joe
@Chris I miss our GDSE game Jams
good morning GDSE

@KevinvanderVelden They're tricks used in stop-motion filming
...which isn't too dissimilar from gamedev

Aah in that it's tricks =p

Jon
issue with this type of pathfinder

Fun times

Jon
i need to raycast the path to validate it
or taking suggestions

1:27 PM
Place your nodes manually

Jon
i wanted to avoid doing that.

fair enough

Joe
more granular nodes?

Do you have a way if invalidating connections between nodes?

user92578
navmesh?

Joe
1:28 PM
half the grid size / round the corners?

Jon
aha
invalidate connections
that is the trick

Jon
thanks Kevin

And it's just an int of data with every node

Jon
Yeah, it will greatly improve the map doing that
fix that issue
each node has 8 connections

1:30 PM
Oh diagonal is allowed to?

Jon
yeah

Still just a byte (don't know why I said int)

Jon
yeah, 8 bits is all i need
aight, i should release an article on how to do this after
seems to be lacking for 2d, for material online on how to do something like this
quite frankly, it would probably be easier to just store it as an int
as a bitmask value

Oh right, C#?

Jon
0 to 255
well, a byte.. whatevs

1:36 PM
@Jon hey, you're just copying me =p

Jon
easier to store -- but more difficult to code around
write a bunch of helper properties
all paths are shared between nodes

You're doing A*? When adding the next nodes to visits just check the bit 1<<(i-1)

Jon
yah, that is fine

Blender is cool :D

Jon
the issue is checking to see if there is a wall between two nodes :)

Nice
I'm optimistic that today will be a good day

back in UE 2.5, when setting up path nodes, it would do thing where it moved an agent around trying to see which nodes were navigable from one to the other

user92578
when you are remote controlling your PC on your laptop and want to turn the laptop off but don't remember the remote controlling so you accidentally close the PC :(

Joe
@SpartanDonut how can you be so sure?!

1:44 PM
I'm not

Joe
well I hope it is too

It would be better if tomorrow was a good day. I've got another test tomorrow that I'm not so confident on as of right now xD

Joe
what kinda of test? just get some caffeine in your veins and just smash that knowledge into your brain

not me

1:46 PM
Microsoft Certification Exam on SharePoint development

Huh what's wrong with the markdown?

user92578
@Lokkij missing a http:/?

That's it, thanks

user92578
np

user92578
use http

user92578
1:47 PM
not https

user92578
doesn't work

@Lokkij people in gaming chat are really liking it
Several backed it on kickstarter

Joe
@SpartanDonut ahh your going to be fine! and good luck bro

Yeah it looks awesome

2:08 PM
Wait ... so Unity has its own version of "epsilon" in the form of Mathf.Epsilon (as opposed to .NET's Single.Epsilon) ... yet they still insist on making it the utterly useless "smallest possible positive float value" instead of the proper "machine epsilon" (a.k.a. "smallest value you can add to 1.0f which isn't lost due to loss of precision"). WHY?!?

@Lokkij yeh i noticed that ... shame no multiplayer though

I should make a property editor for things :P Just like @Tyyppi_77 has for GunHero.
It just seems so infinitely awesome.
I'm just afraid I'd end up playing around with it instead :P

@William'MindWorX'Mariager Release it when you release the game!

user92578
@William'MindWorX'Mariager I do?

user92578
oh right I do

2:17 PM
Did you talk about that? To change entities on the fly :P

user92578
"GameTweaker"

user92578
well variables on the fly

user92578
oh god I'm lerping lerping factors again

Jon
solved.
just need to work on movement physics a lot more, lol

user92578
looks good

2:27 PM
:)

user92578
so is that a*?

Jon
yeah
dynamic
you define a gameobject as the "area" to generate a map on
it sets a bunch of nodes on the defined area, and raycasts to see if there is a wall or not
Then the second pass, raycasts between connections to see if it is a valid path
Then with this level data, the pathfinder does its thing
you can lower the distance between nodes -- at a higher calc

You might consider doing the raycast as part of the A* algorithm--instead of a preprocess. That way, nodes that aren't ever considered don't count against you.
...That is, assuming you're doing everything at run-time
If you're baking all the mesh info as a preprocess, raycasting at that point makes perfect sense

Jon
oh yeah , i'm baking in the a* map
that is the whole point
each node can be updated individually as well, in case data changes :)
heheh
they could pass off as toddlers running around

Have some of 'em run around with their heads turned another way, and you'd definitely have toddler-bots.

Jon
2:39 PM
hehe :) Yeah the movement code is jsut something I threw up for testing
i like writing prototypes.. might just do that for a while

user92578
Anyone used SDL2's rendering stuff?

user92578
I was wondering if there was an easy way to render all texture pixels with certain color

user92578
I can set the shade of a texture, but that is just shading the colors, not replacing

user92578
I'm trying to make the entities "flash" when they take damage

@Tyyppi_77 Could you write a shader to do it?

user92578
2:44 PM
SDL doesn't support shaders, which I'm really sad about

user92578
It makes no sense, as they already use hardware rendering

user92578
But I guess it's about cross-platform stuff

SDL also has software fallback I think

2
Q: Bind SDL2 texture to GLSL shader

SteveDeFactoI'm trying to bind a sdl2 texture to a glsl shader though I'm not entirely sure how? I'm using a library called glfx to handle the glsl shaders and I've been helping with the development of this library as well. I'm pretty sure I've got everything else right but it crashes when I call SDL_GL_Bind...

user92578
Yeah

user92578
2:45 PM
That requires using OpenGL for rendering

user92578
and SDL for the media access and windowing

user92578
I'm using SDL's rendering pipeline

user92578
like I can easily make the sprites blink to black

user92578
but I'd like to blink them to white

user92578
these times I hope I'd went with SFML

Jon
2:57 PM
from what I gather, SFML > SDL

Some Fucking Markup Language is better than Shitty Down Load?

Jon
I thought it was Shit Fuck My Life

heheh
looks like there are still some mods in here...
was there an incident last night?

Jon
dunno

user92578
Thanks for affecting color modulation with blend mode, SDL

user92578
2:59 PM
oh wait you dont fucking do that

There was an incident a couple days ago. Could just be lingering from that

ah right

user92578
so, I guess I have two options: doing the flash sprites in GIMP, or looping trough all sprites run-time and creating copies that have their visible pixels replaced with a given color

Runtime best time

Run time, fun time

user92578
3:12 PM
runtime slow time tough

user92578
looping trough pixels aint fast

For something you do once, on startup?
Negligible

user92578
true

user92578
it's just like... what if I need to do it for variable colors

user92578
I can't do that at startup

user92578
3:14 PM
WHY SDL, WHY?

user92578
all I'd need is a SDL_SetTexureColorModBlendMode(SDL_BLENDMODE_REPLACE);

user92578
with SDL_BLENDMODE_REPLACE being dstRGB = colorModRGB; dstA = dstA;

What are you trying to do again?

user92578
Make entities flash with a color when they get damaged

Uhm I made a creature become more red and at last black when burned in SDL

user92578
3:17 PM
yeah, I can do red easily

user92578
but not bright colors, like white

But?
Ahh right

user92578
because the formula used for color mod

user92578
srcC = srcC * (color / 255)

user92578
because with white srcC = srcC

Jon
3:18 PM
The revolution has started
how many people are employed as cashiers for McDonald's currently?

@Tyyppi_77 Don't OpenGL have functionality for that?
Also can't you just add to the picture to achieve whiter sprite?

@Jon I for one highly welcome this
I get harassed everytime I say no cheese on my salad

Jon
sexually?

@SpartanDonut Heretic!

if i have a 6GB win pc, and 1.5GB is supposedly free according to the perfmonitor... should I not be experiencing slowdown problems?

3:24 PM
No salad in your salad makes more sense than no cheese.

changing programs seems really slow

Jon
a minimized application will sometimes shift its memory into paging

ok that seems to be what's happening then
i have 2 Unitys, an android studio, 3 VS 2013s plus two browsers outlook text editor and skype open

Jon
yeah, lol

That could do it.

3:27 PM
oh yeah plus itunes and lync

user92578
@Hjorthenify I don't use OpenGL, I use SDL

I know, but SDL is build upon OpenGL and is very easy to extend with it

user92578
It's also built on top of DX

user92578
And you can't really add OpenGL stuff to it's pipeline

user92578
It's relatively easy to set up a window and methods to use OpenGL with it

user92578
3:33 PM
But that's not an answer for me

Holy fuck BGFX debug rendering is slow, removing 15 lines of text takes out 10 miliseconds

@Tyyppi_77 Have you tried using the add blending then?
That would make it brighter

user92578
the blending doesn't apply to the color mod

@Tyyppi_77 No but it would make it brighter to create your desired flash effect

user92578
only if there is a sprite behind the entity

3:39 PM
True. Maybe there is an extension for SDL? I know I found one for text-rendering

Abathur is so much fun.
I regularly get double/triple kills with ultimate evolution.

:)
I'm really having fun with Hammer and Jaina
oh and Nova
resetting triple tap. just start hunting down stragglers and picking them off

When I played her I found triple tap somewhat unreliable.

it's troublesome in someways... like a good nova player will drop a clone in front of it. also it stops on damagable buildings (but not other terrain)

Jon
3:52 PM
so fake

what is it supposed to be?
one of these power-bracelets like Q-Ray?

Jon
it says it has a picoprojector, and 8 long range distance sensors
they don't have a working prototype.. the video is faked

what's a picoprojector?

Jon

The only downside of ultimate evolution is you have to know how to play the hero you're copying; otherwise you're just standing there mashing buttons.

3:54 PM
"do what you use to do"
bad grammar, fuck 'em.
@Lokkij haha yeah

Jon
it is a projector that is small

as soon as you put your finger down, it would block the projector

Jon
annnnnnnnd
Pommier says he and three partners are trying to raise money on their own, through PayPal instead of standard crowdfunding vehicles such as Kickstarter.

"We need someone who'd put up some money to allow us to finish a prototype," says Pommier.

you want someone to put up money and you can't even get basic grammar right in your promo video
fuck that

Jon
man, the promo video screams scam
lol

3:58 PM
yeah

Jon
its like those other vids.. hold on.

not going to get that kind of white balance projecting on skin either
my prediction is that this remains vaporware

Jon
and the wiki on it
Euclideon Pty Ltd is an Australian computer software company best known for an unreleased middleware 3D graphics engine, called Unlimited Detail. Euclideon claims it is based on a point cloud search engine indexing system and that the technology can provide 'unlimited graphics power', surpassing the need for polygon-based rendering. In 2010 Euclideon was the recipient of approximately $2 million, the largest grant awarded by the Australian Federal Government under its new Commercialisation Australia initiative. The funds provided by the grant will support the implementation of multi-platfor...
I think it is a bunch of bullshit
He scammed 2 million out of it

Ooh that thing

Jon
Good for him.
Euclideon will be releasing two games in 2015 using this technology and are currently open for investors in its games division, if you are interested please contact us.
I mean... it has quite a huge disparity between the claims, and that final video -- Also, notice that the world is all static.
Its like he created videos with a bunch of photographs, and added some parallaxing effects
Pay attention to the pillars
or the leaves

4:10 PM
Or the cobble walls

Jon
Its a huge hoax.
Here is a guy that thinks he has it all figured out
Its gonna be a Nintendo Phone.
thats my guess.
which would be a pretty insane move

maybe they're launching their own VR environment
take the 3DS up a notch.

Jon
holy fuck

Or maybe just half-a-notch, to holography.

Jon
No seriously.. what the fuck
Watch this

4:22 PM
can't--blocked

Jon
These asshats get featured by Nintendo
for something that is a step back from an atari 2600 game

Wieee bugs that only show up in release mode!

@Jon the scenes are made out of laser scans, not pictures. The issue is that doing so, you'd have to make sure you scan each and every face correctly to have the proper data. And it doesn't seem that the scans were made correctly.
I don't think his stuff is an hoax, but I do think that if it was really that awesome, it would already have been out there in games.

Jon
Oh, it sounds like a major hoax to me -- he's been apparently working on it since 2010
No demo, other than these cryptic youtube videos, with a douchey voiceover
And the demos always seem to not really be related to each other between the years that he posted
Anyways, he managed to con his government into giving him 2 million, so he does have something to show
His claim -- all game engines are stupid -- mine fixes that.
with UNLIMITED DATA RENDERING

4:39 PM
Yeah; well as it's been said: nothing dynamic; if his stuff can display them very fast, good, but what if you decide you want to move something in there?

Comment on the Pillars of Eternity trailer:
> I'm watching this while the game is installing
Paradox's response:
> Is the install process "gripping, immersive and a fresh take on a classic genre"?

user4704
I forgot that shipped today, I was going to take off work :P

Jon
Dot Arcade?
lol.. that is why no one came in today
#1 comment -- "Well.... this looks, bland."

Brainerd - This game just screams handheld but I guess 3DS can't handle these graphics

What is up with this starred resource? None of the links from the reddit post work (domain expired)?

4:53 PM
I picked up the torrent last night. sonniss.com/sound-effects/free-download-game-audio loads currently.

Doesn't for me.

MLM
@TreDubZedd I don't see the torrent link
