5:08 PM
I'm about to get a flood of email from Facebook. I said publicly that it's time to repeal the second amendment, so that we can actually talk about gun control in a meaningful way.

I think I saw this one. Very sharp.

Honestly, for personal defense, you're not really getting much safer than an electronically controlled gun with facial recognition, like the military uses for snipers...
A small child could take out a room of trained agents with the swipe of an arm.
The comedy is good... But he's guilty of his own "bullshit" fallacies he jokes about.

It's true that having a gun does not make you more likely to avoid injury in the face of an attack

I want to learn to develop games in C++. As, I am comfortable with C++. Is there any Engine that uses C++ as its primary programming language.

5:14 PM
Unreal

user4704
Many.

Jon
UE4sure

you can work in C++ or the visual BluePrint scripting language.

Unreal is completely for C++

Oolong Engine might be C++
not sure if that one's still supported

user4704
5:15 PM
Unreal's probably a reasonable choice. Nice infrastructure for easing you into the C++ bits rather than just giving a .lib and headers and telling you to go.

ORX is another. It's data-driven, but you can also do C++ coding in it.

Oolong covers multi platform? Like android, IOS, etc

Thank you @androidplusios.design, perfect timing for that question lol

Jon
if I had a gun I would totally shoot him

Oolong I think interfaces with OpenGL
so it should be able to work crossplatform. though I'm not sure if it's helpful in that regard.
Unreal will do more of the platform work for you I would guess

5:16 PM
Ok so unreal engine is pura C++
?
pure * pura

user4704
Pure enough.

just pick it up and try it, if you don't like it after one project pick up another engine

who all are unreal developers here. So, I might talk better and take useful suggestions

user4704
I'm not sure if anybody here actively uses it (I don't).

Actually that's a funny question, has anyone here used Unreal since version 3?

user4704
5:18 PM
But you can probably ask questions you have on the main site, once you have concrete questions (make sure to read the help page about what is and isn't on-topic though)

I have used Unity but I seriously don't have C#. Unity is best engine but the programming languages they have used are so noobish

lol you're on thin ice buddy

@androidplusios.design that's not a valid reason

user4704
There's nothing "noobish" about C#.

user4704
That's a pretty short-sighted observation.

5:19 PM
Let just light up the torches and get the pitchforks already
No use wasting time

noobish might not be the correct word. The reason is I don't like C#

user4704
But that said, grab UE4 and try it.

Jon
I played this game back when I was 14 or 15 years old, at my girlfriend's house
When we got to this level set - I said "Haw haw haw flat fun, as if"

no no @androidplusios.design "noobish" was correct, just drop a few more like that... keep complimenting Unity while bashing C#... we need a good witch-hunting-mob as a team building exercise around here

Jon
only realizing that my girlfriend's mother and sister were sitting on the couch behind me

5:21 PM
What might be the correct way to learn Unreal. Should I start with the videos they have provided or I should start with documentation.
?

user4704
@androidplusios.design Try both.

user4704
Some people learn better from video guides than by reading.

user4704
Others, the opposite.

Jon
its a huge learning curve
be ready for challenge.

user4704
If you don't know how you prefer to learn, we certainly can't tell you, so you'll just have to try one and see how you fair.

5:21 PM
Jon yes.
I know I learn from Videos.

no like, huge lol, I gave up getting UE4 to work on Linux
just getting it to launch.

@MickLH I'm on it now at work

Jon
you are not supposed to take it out to lunch silly

@androidplusios.design Unity is NOT best engine. And there's nothing wrong with C#.

@JoshPetrie I started with Unity that way. Its pretty easy that way. Documentations are long + boring stuff. My be i'll save it for advance stuff.

user4704
5:23 PM
I can't stand video guides personally.

rtfm

If I want to develop android games with unreal. Do I need to learn android API's for that?
or unreal provides its own API.

user4704
I don't know, I don't use Unreal.

I did little bit of games development with RubyMotion and used android+IOS API's.

I don't think you'll need to worry about droid API to make a game with Unreal, unless you're doing something very specific.

5:24 PM
@androidplusios.design I answered every question you can have from this point forward, until you have an in-game character working.

the layer is ofcourse ruby.

user4704
I assume you don't need to really poke around with the Android API unless you're doing something oddly low-level.

Jon
you can build to android directly inside of UE
for publishing i have no idea
you might have to sign it yourself, however it does look like it spits out an apk, so not sure

Thanks I am gonna go now and start leaning it....videos about to download

5:27 PM
Sticky please?
Integrate into GDSE design please?

it's not possible to understand something when the manual is crap
like unity's

Jon
Unity's manual isn't that bad

no no no Unity's manual is fine

for some parts it is really crap

Jon
some obscure parts yeah :P

5:29 PM
I don't agree. Unity's manual does some stuff really wrong

Jon
yeah, i'm not saying unity's manual is good

I had a Unity Tech ask why I was doing something a particular way. The manual said to. Wtf

Jon
just not saying it is bad

I haven't used Unity since back when a G4 was a good CPU, and I still have no issues with their manual today when I need to decipher it.
But I will acknowledge that it's outright wrong in some cases lol, but as a gamedev you should be able to spot it!

Jon
php manual is pretty harsh

5:30 PM
Oh man I'm ready to defend all the worst manuals today :P
Thanks for cutting straight to that, @Jon, instead of letting this go on

Also please suggest me a nice book for unreal so that when I go to school, I can sit at last bench and learn Unreal and not listen to the boring shit that teachers have to offer :(
@Jon @JoshPetrie

I had to figure that shit out by the manual, you should have to suffer too.

get a tablet and read the manual

Back in the day... I had to throw away my homework and take notes on the manuals during my home time, so I could process those notes while stuck in class.

user4704
5:32 PM
@androidplusios.design ...

Tablets aren't allowed in my School

Jon
take over the school
re-instate tablets

^

Jon
Then read the manual off the tablet

If you need a manual for taking over your school, just go back a few days on the log here.

5:33 PM
:D

Jon

I was searching for a good battery the other day for my solar stuff...

Jon
have you considered a universe in a box?

Now I can't take any of them seriously, I obviously just need a microverse battery

Jon
Ahh, good I see that you have.

5:35 PM
@Lasse There! We have objective proof that I've become stupider.
I began to enjoy a TV series.

Jon
how can one not njoy it

hahahahaha
@Jon not enjoy what
rokit leeg? not possible

Jon
Tiny Rick

not herd of tiny rick

@Almo rick and morty
I find it hilarious actually

I found out about this show because of a friend of mine who I sorta experiment on lol
I asked him to endure something a bit unethical, he said something like "No rick, I won't be your morty."

is this the same friend you talked about previously

Jon
lol, have you seen the original pilot? @MickLH

or do you experiment on a lot of people

I don't think so, @Jon

Jon
5:41 PM
doc and mharti
nsfw
if you wanna youtube it
the original story, was that this was a f-you to unversal studios for a cease and desist or something

fucking spam phone calls

man that was seriously the worst, most vile, most politically incorrect and generally morally horrible pilot episode of anything I've ever watched
ever.
lol I want to go check if a new episode is out now

Jon
you know that poopy butthole guy?

You gotta go easy on me, I hadn't done TV in years and I still have really lightweight tolerance
@Jon does your wife freak out if you watch this with your son?

Jon
my ex wife?
I don't watch it with him, he doesn't like it
he watched the scary terry episode though
this is how you dream bitch!

5:55 PM
lol is that the nightmare guy who always says "bitch!" after everything?

Jon
yeah

@Lasse maybe

maybe the same friend or maybe experiment on many people?

hehehe exactly, meta-joke-meta-experiment-joke-meta-joke

or both?

5:59 PM
I wanted to see how you'd react

so, you were experimenting on me?

Yes, but it would still be a fallacy to infer the obvious answer to your question
@Lasse But just as a "thank you" for participating: 1. Different friend. 2. Yes
My circle of friends has a few "morty"s who are basically dedicated to being experimented on lol

really tempted to make a crypto-trading bot for poloniex
but I gotta finish cognizer

In one of our most unethical experiments, we used only conscious suggestion to have someone hypnotize themself and take on the belief they can be placed into "glass box" that blocks sound

Jon
then, when they fart.. hilarity ensues

6:08 PM
After reinforcing that in a controlled environment where we could fully control ambient noise for a while, we took it out in public and found it immediately caused them to differentiate their personality, so we patched that up and canceled the experiment lol
The subject had already given consent to hypnosis experiments
It's not actually unethical.

Just because someone gives consent doesn't make it ethical. that was decided in part due to the Milgram experiment.

Jon
SHOCK HIM AGAIN
they redid the milgram experiments and concluded that the war effort resulted in more people willing to follow commands
nowadays, people are more likely to say no fuck you

Our study group believes that it's only a function of the perceived competence of the instructor.

Jon
that also
its okay, i'm a doctor.

But that's consistent with other findings, on the basis that the perceived competence in authority figures tends to go up when the person is experiencing cognitive dissonance in relation to ... fuck formalities... when the person is desperate for something, they believe whoever they think can fix it.
I almost formalized it.
I think this effect is what has led to religious "eruptions of belief" in "prophets" during some of the extremes of caste-based societies
In laymans terms, the slave classes are so desperate for change, they will literally believe someone saying "Yeah big guy god gonna fly down and judge everybody one by one, just have a good heart and you're saved!"
In essence, what I'm saying is that I'm a good guy, and it's not safe to trust your own judgement if it disagrees.
I'll be back in a few hours, I gotta hide from your smart people and to visit my dumb friends while I peak on these medications.

6:23 PM
@MickLH seen "The Invention of Lying"?

Jon
6:46 PM
would you believe me if I said yes?

hahahah

Jon
so i want to slow down my taxi when I hit a person
not sure what the best way would be
seems to be fine when I hit one person, but if I hit like 4 at the same time, the taxi pretty much stops
which makes sense, it slows it down 4 times... got any suggetsions here?

speed *= 0.9f; or something?

@Jon I think I'd set a flag. Slowed or not.
1 or 2 or 5 same slow
we don't want realism, we want good gameplay

Jon
i think i might have to add a timer

6:50 PM
one amount of slow gets the point across

Jon
k k

if ( velocity > maxSpeed * 0.9f ) velocity *= 0.9f

Jon
maxSlowdownSpeed
yeah I like that
have a minimum speed to hit slowdown on
the old system, if there were like 3 guys, you could literally speed down and crush them
and it would save your taxi
which I kinda liked
but it feels sluggish at the same time, which I don't like

one guy actually thinks if we repeal the 2nd amendment, that life would very quickly begin to suck and we'd lose all our other rights.
There's one way to look at it.

Jon
the entire point of having that clause in there, was to provide a way to overthrow a government that went crazy
unfortunately, that government has put in safety measures to ensure that people can't do that shit

6:57 PM
@Jon actually, it can be argued the whole point of that amendment was to allow states to keep slaves in check
And that without a guarantee of being allowed to keep their militias to hunt down escaped slaves, they couldn't have gotten the document ratified in the south

Jon
silly slaves

@Jon looks good to me

Jon
need to add females, elderly, children and pets

:)

user4704
@Jon Nice.

user4704
7:04 PM
So like.

user4704
Are you at any point expected to actually pick up a fare?

Jon
lol yeah

In one piece?

Jon
Yeah, you need to pick up a fare and bring him to his requested location

man I need more unreal buddies in here

7:23 PM
Naah
Just come over to the C++ custom engine crowd

This is for work :)

Hmm tricky

7:46 PM
@almo tis is getting hard ...

yeah, the difficulty curve is well-made.

not for me...
it was pretty easy the first 8 levels... and suddenly it became impossible

oh haha
I've found it ramping up pretty smoothly

about that level we talked last night... turned out parallel processing actually slows it down

awesome. again I'm not looking for any hints ;)

7:49 PM
I know...
I was just saying how frustrated I got, when I couldn't speed it up by using multiple cores
it's just the same principle as in actual programming

yeah
:)

if you can't manage the load between the cores... you might have an slow down instead of speed up
although I broke the record of your friend by far... turned out I had an extra (useless) loop in my code :P

need moar useless loops :)

it feel pretty much like the same thing microsoft did to vista, while building 7

8:50 PM
just have to post this song that I have liked for decades.

9:03 PM
gooooooood moooooooorning

HAI
I felt kind of bad for snagging the comment and making an answer of it.
1
Q: Why does [NSNumber numberWithInt:INFINITY] return 0?

KenI'm trying to use the INFINITY macro as an integer but for some reason it returns 0. for (int i = 0 ; i<100; i++) { NSLog(@"%@",[NSNumber numberWithInt:INFINITY]); //return -/+ max int } for (int i = 0 ; i<100; i++) { NSLog(@"%@",[NSNumber numberWithFloat:INFINITY]); //return "inf" } ...

But the guy who answered yesterday didn't respond to a comment ping I made telling him to make it an answer.
15 moar pointz

karma life

:)
I don't get the for loops in his code example though...

Jon
10:05 PM
while (false);

Pip
eyyyyyyo
Just got a whole bunch more 3d printer stuff.... super close to having all of the pieces
Just need nuts/bolts/screws and like two other things
HYPE!

Jon
shit nice

Pip
The guy who kindly printed me most of the printed parts for free also sent me... get this.... STICKERS
and a little boat
(the boat is from 3dbenchy.com, it's a 3d printer calibration test)

Jon
working for production server support
this is a simulation

Pip
how is it?

Pip
lol

10:29 PM
@Jon you posted that one a year or more ago. It was funny then, it's funny now. :)

Jon
yeah it is hilarious

:D

10:55 PM
Wouldn't it be cool if we could make pixel art like this :D
Man, once I finish all my homework today, I'll only practice making sprites

11:31 PM
I bet you could

Almo you can too! :D

Q: Why answers' authors do not up-vote the questions they answer

MAndI will admit: I am new here. Still, one thing that has intrigued me is that: why some one who bothers to give an answer to a given question does not up-vote that question? On the one hand, one might think that a question is worth a reply, but is not necessarily super useful. On the other hand, w...

@JoshPetrie i love how you answered that question without upvoting it.
