9:00 PM
HEY GUYS!
I have a "quick" question!
What aspect ratio do u guys usually use for games
16:9? 4:3?
I was originally using 640 by 480

16:9
1024x576

Thank you!

16:10 is (kind of) common too

I was about to ask u what resolution u usually used

@TheMuffinCoder depends what your target platform is
and what kind of game you are using

9:03 PM
2d platformer/scroller?

is that an answer or question?

A answer to ur question :D

both? :D

@snake5 I think you are right about the mapping being slightly off

heh

9:06 PM
zoomed in on the balls when they were not broken yet and the reflections were not touching like they should have been
They do update in realtime however

yeah
it's really obvious in this screenshot
I wonder how much time it takes to render those cubemaps though

idk. im getting like 160fps

maybe they're using some sort of cheap textured box for the background?

131 in that pic
no the bg is all real 3d

because the problem with these sorts of renderings is that there's lots of render target switching involved

9:09 PM
really high poly 3d too

I've heard that's not exactly fast with many GPUs

@Almo hey. I need some fast music with heavy bass, stat.

I think Lady Gaga is what you're looking for ;P

or the MGR soundtrack

They could be sphere maps too

9:17 PM
dual paraboloid maps, you mean?
or some kind of non-standard raytracing?

In computer graphics, sphere mapping (or spherical environment mapping) is a type of reflection mapping that approximates reflective surfaces by considering the environment to be an infinitely far-away spherical wall. This environment is stored as a texture depicting what a mirrored sphere would look like if it were placed into the environment, using an orthographic projection (as opposed to one with perspective). This texture contains reflective data for the entire environment, except for the spot directly behind the sphere. (For one example of such an object, see Escher's drawing Hand wit...

you can't render a sphere map effectively with generic rasterization

maybe they are gasp faking it
that's unheard of

faking it how?
cubemaps are easy to do and well-supported, even if a bit slow
so they're the obvious choice
dual paraboloid maps is the only way I've heard anyone ever come close to sphere mapping
it was heavily researched for point light shadow mapping, iirc
haven't ever seen it in practice, though
even Uncharted 3 used something else, it seemed

@AttackingHobo fast with heavy bass
just a sec
I don't know much high BPM stuff
when you say "fast" you mean like Jungle kind of fast?

9:23 PM
high energy or w/e

the problems with DPM are that there are noticeable seams and perspective distortion

let me look
once the kick comes in, that's fairly deep
might not qualify as "high energy" but it's not slow, and it has some super-deep bass in it

why does it seem that german electronic composers have a different sense of hearing than everyone else?
they can push all these high-pressure synths in and never give a damn about their overwhelming influence on the mix

and last one, also might not be high enough energy, but also deep bass, and decent tempo:

@Almo thanks. still listening to the first one. If you have any artist or album recomendations that would be cool too. I wanna build some playlists on google music

9:29 PM
So I have a weird bug in my decode algorithm. it only decodes 1/3rd of the message exactly

As a starting point into the Deepchord stuff, try the album Liumin. Solid all the way through, pure analog.

@hasherr nothing weird there, sounds like a loop limit miscalculation

Deepchord almost always features thick atmospherics, medium tempos, and decent amounts of bass.

That's exactly what it is, it's just tricky to find.

@Almo Deepchord Presents: Echospace?

9:31 PM
Lot's of 3's going everywhere, things are tricky.

@AttackingHobo yeah that
it's Deepchord (Rod Modell) with one of his pals from Chicago.
Rod's from Detroit

@hasherr you could try to multiply the end result by 3 and check decoding for different message lengths, if it works - ship it
dunno about many algorithms that use the number 3 though
base64 perhaps

@hasherr easy fix. just copy encoded message 3 times and decode that

may not work if integer division is involved

It's a bit more complicated than that, guys.
I'm trying to decode an image out of another one.

9:34 PM
rgb to grayscale or what?

No
Steganography (US /ˌstɛ.ɡʌnˈɔː.ɡrʌ.fi/, UK /ˌstɛɡ.ənˈɒɡ.rə.fi/) is the art or practice of concealing a message, image, or file within another message, image, or file. The word steganography combines the Ancient Greek words steganos (στεγανός), meaning "covered, concealed, or protected", and graphein (γράφειν) meaning "writing". The first recorded use of the term was in 1499 by Johannes Trithemius in his Steganographia, a treatise on cryptography and steganography, disguised as a book on magic. Generally, the hidden messages will appear to be (or be part of) something else: images, articles, shopping...

yeah, was gonna say it sounds like Steganography

image -> image or is there another reference image involved?
hmm, bit chopping
funny stuff

10:01 PM
I've been hearing that sitting is like really unhealthy.
...
Should I stand now?
I'm kneeling right now.
But that's probably bad for the knees.

lots of things are unhealthy

@Chris Like PHP?

has its pros and cons :p

Pros: It's not as bad as Lisp.
Or scheme for that matter.
Most languages you actually start programming even if you don't know them just by looking at them for a bit.
Not with scheme.
Why did gimp base most of their scripts on scheme.
I wish that they would switch some of it to python.

FUCK PROGRAMS THAT STEAL FOCUS
7

10:05 PM
Since there already is python support.
Focus of any kind can be annoying.
I think I may decide to switch my window manager's focus mode.
Maybe to focus follows mouse.
I don't know, what I use now can be a bit annoying.

@AttackingHobo have a star. i hate that shit

@Almo Monodevelop did it 3 times while starting up!
Starting up. I click chrome to type

:(

bam it steals focus
I click back to chrome and second later stolen focus, <repeat that

yeah

10:12 PM
@AidanMueller focus follows mouse sounds more annoying. click on textbox in one window, move mouse away so it's not blocking what you type, focus goes to new window where you accidentally hit the keyboard shortcut to send a rage email to your boss and you get fired and become homeless

like I don't know how to find the window in the dock/taskbar
XWindows used to use mouse-location focus
I shouldn't need a third-party plugin to do this:

made sheep animation lol

awesome

I made it but I think he looks really cute.
CUTTTT333!
TY Chris!

10:27 PM
nervous sheep doesn't want anyone to see him eat
then you just post him on the internet. what a jerk.

he's so afraid of the wolf that wants his meat. I would have given him privacy but he was so cut3333 to resist to not share.

wooha
Dat is cool!

Wrong one.
Imagine the things that you could do with this with video games.

and DAT is sooo cool.
so the projection changes based on the position of the camera. I see.

10:33 PM
Part two is cooler.

no postproduction, lots of preproduction

looks great, except for all the people moving things

Imagine an entire film like this.

would be completely fine for a theater experience, though
I wouldn't want to have such films, this deserves to be a live performance

10:36 PM
But imagine the game applications.

films are for the impossible things

Yeah.

game applications?

Real life health bars.
I don't know.
I'd like to experiment with this.

not much to experiment here
it's a set with a projector and specifically tuned content

10:37 PM
we had something like this in our school

if you want to project healthbars on walls, that's doable

@snake5 It's projection mapping.

don't think there's much more to do though

We didn't have the projection to follow the player but we have simple surrounding 360 degree monitor thinging.

I just think you could use this for immersion.
Of course, it wouldn't immerse you like an oculus, but it would still be cool.

10:38 PM
works only from one point of view and requires a special room

Not always.

I mean, fine for some amusement park
definitely not for home entertainment

That was done at home.
No studio.
And it works from all perspectives.

doesn't matter where if they build content for it exclusively
that's the problem
content fits one specific setup
any deviations will just mess everything up

Oh of course you wouldn't do it exclusively.
I was just thinking as an option or something.
@snake5 Projection mapping software is configurable.
It's not like stuff has to be in a certain place.

10:41 PM
sure it is, but the room may not be

It's 2D clips projected onto 3D objects.

any extra columns, holes, decorations, no fitting place for a projection device

How do I find the vector that would describe the the relationship between one point/vector and another
Trying to move an object from vector A to vector B

also, it needs white walls
not common in homes

No. It just needs white objects.
Like boxes and stuff.

10:42 PM
if you're willing to redecorate on and off occasionally

I am talking about using this in combination with a TV.

people are generally lazy, if they can't put something together in less than a minute, most won't go for it
and this requires quite a lot of work to set things up the right way

I am not saying that this would be something that you would actually put into a real game. Just something to mess around with.

@SpartanDonut add the vectors and normalize

Just for the fun of it.

Thank you sir

well, for fun, buy a projector and hang it on the ceiling
render game to two outputs
one for each screen

And do google earth skydiving?

if you wish
the shadow would get in the way though
might need more than one projector
that's extremely expensive too
at least where I live

Not if you are close enough to the projector (and off to the side).

10:46 PM
so you're going to need to construct a way to stay above ground

Yeah.

easier said than done in a usual home/apartment
quite easy in a bigger room though
anyway...
I've got a game here
I'd like to hear some thoughts about it

See ya.

Wait, are you leaving?
Or no.
You made it sound like you were leaving.

10:50 PM
not just yet :)

@snake5 The only options it gives me is 144p, and 720p. What's with that?

@AidanMueller for the video? that's odd, I get all the usual ones

Hmm.
I'll try to refresh.
Oh.
It also has 480.
I think that one just appeared.
But I may be able to play 480.
I used to do 360.
But I got an upgrade for my internet.

@snake5 Objectives look cool

Now I get ~3.75 Mbps.

10:52 PM
At first I thought it was supposed to be underwater, like you're controlling a submarine

Ok, now I refreshed and I have them all. I think they just looked grayed out or something.
@Chris Same.
@snake5 Cool title screen.

@Chris heh, I guess that's because of how the player-controlled device looks and moves

hehe yeah

@snake5 Really cool. I liked it.

reminded me a bit too of Perfect Dark, sending your little spy camera around to do things

10:57 PM
:P

thanks for the positive response :)
btw, there's a download link for a Windows version in the description
(in case somebody didn't notice)

Cool.
@snake5 What libraries and what not did you use?

aight, I'm trying to stream a league game, see if I can maintain 60 fps and not lag to shit. if anyone wants to watch, here's a link: twitch.tv/icydefiance

@snake5 BTW, I wold change the model of the vehicle. It looks like a submarine.

@AidanMueller a lot of my own stuff (SGScript and the related addons) and some external libraries like SDL2, Bullet, OpenAL

10:59 PM
Anything that advanced wouldn't be using propellers.
@snake5 So you used cross platform libraries then?

@AidanMueller what would it be using?

Because if you did, then I would expect it to work in wine.

@AidanMueller yeah, though some of them aren't fully ported yet
I've heard it works in Wine on OSX

@snake5 I don't know. Some sort of glowing thing.

haven't tested myself though
@AidanMueller I thought of fire but that would leave marks on the environment, something a stealth-capable drone-like device shouldn't do

11:01 PM
I actually haven't installed wine yet.
I've gotten by without using any windows apps until now.

besides, lots of drones use propellers so I just thought it made sense to stick with that

Which was my main worry when I first switched to linux.
@snake5 What I'm saying is that it's floating.
So you would expect it to use rockets or something.

rockets are a bit too heavy for this kind of work
would look good, though
I had an idea that I could implement part switching points

@snake5 The main problem is that it looks like a submarine. Maybe if you would make it look like some sort of super cool looking turbine, it would look more appropriate.

like places where you could go and swap parts of the device for different ones

11:03 PM
That sounds cool.
Like upgrades?

upgrades too
but also just different things
like machine guns vs lasers vs flamethrowers
for the weapon attachment

@snake5 The graphics remind me of quake-era games.

fire-based vs propeller-based for elevation/turning systems
@AidanMueller as for the submarine look, I guess the shape adds most to that, and the shape is really something temporary I quickly made in Blender
@AidanMueller well, that's something; for a more complete version I would probably go for a lot more decorations than that
so that there wouldn't be just walls everywhere
which is why I guess it looks a lot like games from that era
the tech at the time was really favoring plain walls and floors over everything else
anyway..

@snake5 I'm not saying that it's a bad thing.

I guess I have to go get some sleep now

11:11 PM
I'm just saying, it has an old style for some reason.

yeah, I understand
though that reason was more lack of resources than anything else

Plus the tools back then.
I think it was partially because you had to do a lot more work.
No unity or anything like that.

I still have to do a lot of work, that hasn't really gone away
the game wouldn't look even near the way it did if I used unity
had to use a laptop for the presentation, only had dynamic lighting implemented, so I had to write a software occlusion culling add-on to get it near 60 fps on that laptop on 800x480 or some similar resolution
the free version of unity doesn't support occlusion culling afaik
I could use lightmaps there, though
