@JohnMcDonald Need micropayments. Also achievements and global highscores
and MERCH
it's pretty good, good work

thanks. I've considered micro-transactions, but meh, doesn't really fit this game imo. There are lots of those other avenues to pursue though

yeah, don't charge for stuff
highscore list is a legit idea though
are google play services any good?

@SethBattin Yeah. It is. A while back, I wanted to add sharing of scores through FB and whatever
Umm, I've only used an AdMob plugin for this, so I can't say

well good luck with it

:) thanks. I'll let you know how it goes

12:27 AM
lol, someone on twitter is offering to do art for me, :(

1:01 AM
Unlike geometrical things, the topological things (let's say, graphs) don't "display themselves". Additional preparation is required for displaying the graphs. Display geometry needs to be created in order to be able to display the graph. The display geometry, however, is a part of presentation, but not a part of the domain. To make it work, there are NodePresenter and Edgepresenter objects in the view for every Node and Edge in the domain model.
There should already be a pattern for this. Perhaps even a book full of them. Gut feeling.

@JohnMcDonald My brother just tried web stack Skippy Fish on his Firefox OS ZTE Open C($50 phone). It runs great and the marketplace is short on quality games so you could grab a big audience.

Whao
I had no idea those phones existed
It's also really hard to test against something you don't own, :/

MLM
@JohnMcDonald Runs perfectly fine except when you turn to landscape orientation. You can use adsense instead of admob.
$50 phone... kinda low barrier to entry but understandable if you don't want to pursue
There is a Firefox OS simulator as well

Well... it's worth looking into. From my experience with the android emulator, they perform pretty very poorly
this video makes it look incredibly easy:

MLM
1:38 AM
simulator isn't necessary because whatever runs in the browser will work on Firefox OS. I was just suggesting that to make sure both orientations look right just in case Firefox doesn't have the orientation API built in

Right

@Almo done

you guys won?

yeah. they had an afk and I was lagging like hell so it wasn't that much fun.

:(

1:50 AM
not sure if I want to play again with that lag

you did awesome there near the end getting the kill on rammus after he got lee

that was pure desperation right there o.o

hahaha

So, I figure there's no harm is submitting the app to a few online reviewers. How does this sound:
Skippy Fish is an adorable one-button game that I just released for Android.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jcpmcdonald.skippyfish

You play Skipper, a fish, who is being chased by a shark. To escape, Skipper jumps out of the water where the shark can't eat him and attempts to stay there for as long he can. As Skipper approaches the surface of the water, you need to tap the screen to skip. If your timing is too early or too late, you will lose momentum; so you must tap at t

MLM
Maybe a bit about yourself(the developer) and how it was conceived in a game jam

2:00 AM
heh, I should probably read a few reviews to see what sort of stuff they put in there.
Well... other reviews from this website (android central) don't really have that info, but I guess it can't hurt to put something at the bottom
bah, I should not have had that afternoon coffee
coffee + release = overload

2:46 AM
rim lighting really adds to the final image it seems
That's without
And that's with it

How make videogames for a living: Day 1: have an idea. Next 7 days: make the game. Next 365 days: polish.

3:17 AM
365 days? That's fast

3:34 AM
question: how to make a fog in 3d, like the one in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nAP08DLGkg?

Do I need to create billboarding or put a 2D texture in a 3D face or something and move it?
@DwarfSlice I'm creating a simple game while I still learn, and I polish it as I can, because I don't know much yet. Is it bad? :cP
and now I just need to make some interaction with the water and some fog... Then I need to make map generation...

@ArthurGibraltar quads floating around is a common way to do fog, but it usually looks like crap. volumetric fog, like in that video, is a whole lot more complicated. it looks like it only works with a certain lighting model, too. that's all I'm getting from google without putting too much effort in.

3:52 AM
@ArthurGibraltar if you did that with particles, yes, but the video shows volumetric fog which is rendered somewhat like this: gamasutra.com/view/feature/131442/…

4:36 AM
I want some help in this

@IcyDefiance thanks. Yes, it's very complicated indeed. I found this link: xnauk-randomchaosblogarchive.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/…. But I'm still trying to understand it before start a new code as I can't copy any part.
@Lasse this is PERFECT. Thanks, the link you sent is much easier to comprehend. But I still need to find a way to code all that... I'll start with a class called FogManager.. :c)

EBooks!

user92578

user92578
Well, it's just religion, so it doesn't matter that much, but still...

user92578
11:27 AM
Status Update: After 45 minutes it works now

11:42 AM
Those ebooks are the best, they can be viewed anytime anywhere, right?

user92578
12:12 PM
@Lasse yeah, totally

user92578
So, hey guys, I'm home!

12:40 PM
Hello home, I'm Lasse.

user92578
kinda would have worked better if you just had kept that as a dad joke

user92578
but it was fine like this too

user92578
12:55 PM
My english teacher puts all our homework to net so we can see those, but he uses always like these really annoying font colors; this time a really bright green on a white background...

what's the font? comic sans or sans comic?
(•_•) ( •_•)>⌐■-■ (⌐■_■)

user92578
not sure

user92578
family name == last name, right?

I think so

user92578
also, I don't know how, but she set up a Google Forms page for us to do some self-evaluation, and here she has a set of radio buttons, and a note: "Tick only one box" :D

12:59 PM
well, you can always try to hack it

user92578
OMG I had to translate this into english: "I have a two-year-old rabbit named Roger."

user92578
like, really?

user92578
Roger?

user92578
really?

what?
Who Framed Roger Rabbit is a 1988 American animated/live action fantasy comedy film directed by Robert Zemeckis. The screenplay by Jeffrey Price and Peter S. Seaman is based on Gary K. Wolf's 1981 novel Who Censored Roger Rabbit?, which depicts a world in which cartoon characters interact directly with human beings and animals. Who Framed Roger Rabbit stars Bob Hoskins as private detective Eddie Valiant, who investigates a murder involving the famous cartoon character, Roger Rabbit. The film co-stars Charles Fleischer as the eponymous character's voice; Christopher Lloyd as Judge Doom, the villain...
could be a reference to that

user92578
1:06 PM
and totally is

user92578
but like really, why does it ALWAYS have to be a reference

that should make it more fun to learn as well as learn more
unless, of course, that is the same reference every time

1:35 PM
I wonder if an algorithm will ever get named after me
everything seems to be invented already
that would look cool in CV. "An algorithm is named after me."
I guess I could type in "An algorithm hasn't been named after me, yet."

@Lasse That would look less cool though :)

yeah
but I think it would show something about my enthusiasm towards what I do
would it?
:O

@Lasse It would show your enthusiasm for putting stuff on your CV.

(I'm not being too serious here, my employer had me update my linkedin profile because of a client's interest)
lol fun typo there
my employer, not my employee

user92578
how do I center a set of elements inside a div?

1:43 PM
what kind of elements?

user92578
well just paragraphs for now but they will be links later

you could try margin: auto; if the element you want to center inside another is not as wide as the parent

user92578
for my nav bar

user92578
they are just in the nav container div, so that wont work

if you just want to center text, you should use text-align: center;

user92578
1:44 PM
I guess I could create a div for them

user92578
Hmm, still not centering:

user92578

<nav id="navbar"><a href="#">link</a></nav>
#navbar { width: 100%; text-align: center; }
#navbar a { display: inline-block; padding: 10px; }
would that work?
nav is html5 element if you're wondering
if you're not using html5, just use div instead

user92578
nope :(

Ok not really a liar but you obviously have something else screwing it up :P

user92578
1:54 PM
yeah

Which means we really can't provide you an answer unfortunately for you

gun her zero!
;)

user92578
:)

lol I had to look closely but I saw that too now

user92578
Once this site works I should quite easily be able just push the folder to my GitHub repo and the site should show up :)

user92578
1:59 PM
aihgt now it works

user92578
Is the new trend to keep all the content on one page and then just show the one "page" the user has selected?

for some reason I found that fun, for the first time in like a year
it's no new trend

user92578
eating brb

@JoshPetrie so are people circumventing the vi site problem by adding answers to the emacs site for a vi emulator?
1
A: Kill or copy current line with minimal keystrokes

DanThis is not an answer for orthodox emacs. If, however, you're willing to blaspheme with evil's modal editing, you can: dd for kill line cc for copy line Both can be prefixed by the number of lines to kill/copy (eg, 4cc will copy the next 4 lines).

2:07 PM
Did anything more ever come of that debacle?

I don't think so. :(
Really surprises me that it happened.

uhh why is visual studio showing the wrong font? :(

anyone know how to refer to a portion of mono that doesn't yet exist in unity ?
I tried copying the source directly from github in to the asset folder for the bits i want
It does some very strange things

the top text is "Droid Sans Mono" on my Visual Studio, the bottom part is "Droid Sans Mono" screenshot from the website I downloaded it from
they are nothing alike

theme settings maybe ?

user92578
2:18 PM
font size also has a really big impact on font look

user92578
try to zoom in in VS

there's a setting for each "type of thing"

but the font is totally different, for example if you compare the P character

its likely not applying it to one or the other

VS is unable to apply it apparantly
because that's not the correct font
@Wardy I've just implemented the stuff I wanted in pure C# by myself, Tuples for example

user92578
2:20 PM
Does VS use Consolas?

yeah, that's the only font I actually get working

yeh but the thing I want in this case is a chunk of .Net 4.0
I want the namespace System.Threading.Tasks

you just can't use .net features with unity, because unity sucks. dwi :P

So I figured why not just pull it in
its in the latest mono repos on github

I used threadpool, it does the same thing
in my unity project

2:22 PM
but that seems to be telling me thatTuple<T1, T2> does not exist
blatantly wrong

user92578
Is there a way to avoid copypasting stuff that is same for every page for HTML?

@Lasse Yeh I deliberately don't want to manage the threads myself
@Tyyppi_77 are you using MVC ?

@Tyyppi_77 Use PHP
oh, github, you can't

I would put the html in to a partial view

There might be some sort of JavaScript templating solution out there...
I've not used one though

2:23 PM
then render that partial

user92578
sounds too complicated

@SpartanDonut knockout.js is great for this

user92578
I guess CTRL-C and CTRL-V is the way to go

@Tyyppi_77 try this ^

user92578
I wish GitHub offered a small server for the sites they generate

2:24 PM
ugh, using javascript for displaying static pages
that's just ridiculous

<ul data-bind="foreach item in list">
    ... your template code here ...
</ul>
then in your js you just call up knockouts binding

knockout.js and angularjs are the cancer of web

lol
copy and paste is soooo much better

user92578
that library gave me cancer

2:25 PM
im currently trying to figure out a generic client implementation

@Tyyppi_77 it's a github page, just do it manually if you don't want to set up some other hosting

Given an OData endpoint of type T
render stuff :)

Copying and pasting code for static HTML isn't a big deal... the pain comes from making a change to one page you now want to apply across all pages
Depending on how many pages you've got and the nature of the changes

if you design the html code even remotely wisely, it's no problem updating 5-10 pages once every month

I tend to develop my web pages in components
if there's some common code I reuse that component
things like layout for example exists on every page so share it

2:30 PM
this is not wisely:
<div><div><div><div>something</div></div></div></div>

when you change the layout the whole site changes

@Lasse looks like Dreamweaver output

@Wardy but you're talking about with server side tech right?
Or just a JS library?

the same can be applied to something like a list, or an article
both IMO

Ah so you don't believe the cancer theory? good man :P

2:31 PM
What do you guys recommend to use when trying to encode an Xml file for my game's save file?

a comment is a comment and requires the same markup no matter what

@Shroeder language?

the only real change would likely be some css conditions given a particular scope and the model data used to produce that output

c#
xna 4.0

@Shroeder binary then compress

2:32 PM
I see it has a built in encode function where I can specify what type of encoding im going for. Just wondering if that is too common for people to decode and manipulate game data

you can skip xml altogether then ... just serialise the raw object
@Shroeder UTF8 / UTF16 ?

Yeah utf8 and 16 and then some ISO examples or something

ISO or unicode

I don't think you want encoding...

Whats the differencce

2:33 PM
UTF8 is the most common I believe
it's just a charset thing

I mean, I don't need encoding, but right now a user can just open up the xml and change values of char level and stuff

Yeah encoding doesn't solve that problem

Oh

@Shroeder its already encoded in one of those formats

2:34 PM
I thought it was "serialized" and not "encoded"
:P Haha
Well what am I trying to say

serialisation = turn something in to text (basically)

Whats the word I should be using
I'm looking to make my structure obscure to users

@Wardy I just wanted to add to my comment about js stuff being cancer, that it surely has it's place in web applications. But that's no excuse to use them in simple websites that just display some content, like a blog. Using them for news feed aggregator for example is way more acceptable. But if I had the power I'd ban everyone who used angularJS or such for displaying static content.

encoding in this case = the format in which the raw binary data will be stored

I swear someday I will say something that makes sense

2:36 PM
@Lasse people feel the need to use JS for everything these days

@Lasse so a static blog with 100+ posts shouldn't use any sort of templating?

bugs the shit out of me too

they shouldn't, it's wrong

@SpartanDonut yes it should

Though at that point they should use some sort of server side tech :P

2:36 PM
@SpartanDonut I'm talking about javascript, not server-side stuff that should handle that kind of thing

@Lasse yeah they should be using jquery.

you should have a template for blog post and a template for a comment IMO

@Almo are you just fooling around? :P

Angular doesn't have to be (and I assume knockout would be the same) purely client side

yes totally. :) (fooling around)

2:37 PM
or serious

Who cares if your data is static or in a db

I'm looking to make my structure obscure to users

@SpartanDonut templating should be used ... but client side ... probably not needed ... overkill
@Shroeder serialise with a binary serialiser then the user can't edit it

really, this whole discussion is like this to me:

2:38 PM
lol

because using jquery or javascript whatsoever for formatting websites is just ridiculous

Can I still use the xml sreializer in conjunction with that?

@Lasse formatting is purely the job of CSS IMO
structure is dealt with using html
behaviour with JS
displaying a blog post requires no behaviour
so no JS needed
@SpartanDonut does that clarify ?

still 99% of the crappy javascript websites do this:
$('.someclass').css('color', '#ffffff')

@Lasse those people should be shot on sight

2:40 PM
Whoa
Lets keep it Dapper

@Shroeder hey that's the polite way of putting it

Scary
I should have been shot a few times then:P

So the examples provided... are not at all what I'm referring to
Is it really a crime to use some sort of JS framework to template your HTML and CSS and dynamically pull in content into that template if you're hosting on GitHub or something else without server side technology?

Server-Side OP

I realize there are better tools for varying jobs but from a maintainability standpoint how much harm is using such a framework doing as opposed to how much it's helping?

2:42 PM
just because the client's browser might be able to do whatever you make it do, it does not mean it's right

Sounds viable both ways.

@Lasse right in what sense?

like the correct thing to do

Correct in what sense?

@Shroeder oh dear ...

2:45 PM
you could use a private nuclear plant to power your house, but you don't do it

I don't want stupid metaphors
Where is this code of laws that you follow for web dev that makes using JS illegal?
I want to know and understand why you follow these rules

using JS isn't illegal, you are missing the point

yeah, the point is missed here, by a mile

@Wardy :P

styles set into js code are basically hardcoded

2:46 PM
its commonly accepted that JS is for the purpose of adding behaviour to the client

@snake5 that is not at all what I'm proposing

as opposed to css, where they can accept overrides

templating engines that have come out recently were built to support things like node.js where the js is running on the server
really templating is the job of the server

@SpartanDonut as for this, I don't really see a problem

rendering is the browsers job

2:47 PM
you'll just lose some user and search engine support
so it's your problem, should you choose to accept it :D

@snake5 certainly. It's a tradeoff

I have C# code in helper class in my MVC stuff that writes entire JS scripts lol
that's some funky stuff

Ish

using reflection too which is always fun
as you can imagine its nice and quick

@Wardy I wouldn't suggest generating scripts much
a few lines, tops
generated code is just a lot harder to debug

2:49 PM
Agreed

it's mainly for dynamic data sources

for data sources, embed json

generated JS is no harder than normal js to debug imo
js is a dumb ass language with no real idea of standards IMO

or the parameters to call external sources

you must write some really horrible js then lol

2:50 PM
people that like it should see a doctor

@Wardy depends how deep you go with it

Well this conversation is a waste of time

Haha

there's a reason why things like coffeescript exists

right now I'm researching a ne front end for the next 10 years of about 5,000 users life

2:50 PM
what's your level of generation, 1 being "a few parameters" and 10 being "personal coffeescript"?

no doubt it'll be wrong for some stupid reason like needsmorejquery.com

@Lasse not a really good reason

@snake5 a dynamic data source (essentially a single object in js)

@snake5 do you mean the reason why coffeescript exists, or the reason why coffeescript is needed?

@Wardy embed json, then

2:52 PM
var source = @SomeDynamicStuff()
@snake5 I would if i was just dumping data but im not
im telling the client where to go to get data

what are you doing, then?

and what languages to use

@Lasse it's not really needed, so the former

eg use jsonp and go url "foo.com"

coffeescript exists, because javascript is horrible to maintain in larger codebases

2:53 PM
@Wardy sounds like all you need to generate are parameters for the call
@Lasse nope

@Lasse that and typescript
@snake5 its a bit more complex than that

@snake5 nope? what's your version then?

the source object contains type info of the thing it will be receiving
so it knows something about how that can be bound

@Wardy if it is, it's not because of the concept, the complexity must be engineered

This conversation doesn't feel related to Game Development:(

2:54 PM
yeah

what if we're developing some webgl games? :O

@Lasse guys hate javascript and want to write in a language that seems cleaner but still work on the web

@Lasse my advice: don't :D

@snake5 there's a reason for the hate

2:55 PM
@Lasse sure, but not big enough to justify a new language and all the crap that comes with it

var OrderDetails = { ... everything in here is completely dynamic ... }

@Shroeder get used to that one :P

I build that with server side helpers

@snake5 but it is justified if the new language is less bad than the one it's compiled into

@Wardy I like JS. But I have read "Javascript: the Good Parts" which helps a lot in understanding how to use it well.

2:56 PM
@Wardy sounds about right, then
not much actual generation
@Lasse nope

@Almo doesn't help me at all in this situation ... good book though

:)

@snake5 not the most ideal example as it doesn't show the whole datasource

@Lasse "less bad" doesn't necessarily equate or even come near to having to struggle with a compiler and a documentation for a different language
if js was assembly, I would agree

I took a quick journey away from my game's engine development. Started creating content, mainly Items with Unique art and regular art. 50 Hours of development later I am still trying to generate art for each item class(helm,boots,shoulders,shield, etc...) Aren't there people that will do this for me? I offer up .10 Dollars an hour for anyone interested...

2:58 PM
if js was brainfuck, I would also agree

@snake5 on average i spit out about 100 to 200 lines of dynamically generated JS

but js is worse than assembly, in my opinion

@Lasse have you done enough assembly?

assembly can easily be followed, it's straight-forward
javascript jumps here and there and is designed to be spaghetti

@Lasse try building a web application in assembly

2:59 PM
I don't get why JS has to be the only language on the browser why can't there be a common API instead

@Lasse ctrl+f doesn't work for you?

I've made one with C, does that count? :(

so I can run any language I want in the browser

@Lasse nope

@SpartanDonut you need to derail this conversation. You started it, you must end it.

2:59 PM
I don't mean like plugins or active X
just like a VM API for any virtual machine loader

@Shroeder It's Tyyppi's fault really
