5:06 PM
after tweaking the code appearance a bit, I managed to get it to look good

Oh snap is this your editor O:

what editor? :O

Gambas 3
Also VB? Ewwww

it's not VB actually, it's Gambas :D
they make a point of the fact that it's not a VB clone
it's also one of those recursive acronyms
Gambas means Gambas Almost Means BASic

5:11 PM
it's nice that you can pair it by default with either KDE or Qt

It seems like your doing QT?

sorry
GTK
why the hell did I say KDE
that's a freaking window manager gui thingy

No idea :P I've done my fair share of basic(Liberty Basic)
Terrible. I hated it.

I don't hate any language, so it's fine
yeah, I'm pairing it with Qt atm
I'm making a small app that will run as a mainframe which controls other smaller stations
the smaller stations record voice commands and send them to the mainframe
the mainframe then instructs each station what to do
the point is to do stuff like starting music throughout the house by voice commands
then extending it to control lights and stuff
you know, you come home from a long trip, take a seat on the sofa and just say:

my second language was Liberty Basic, and it's definitely horrible. Blitz Basic (now Blitz3D) is a million times better.

5:14 PM
"Play some lounge jazz. Set lights to ambiental."

@IcyDefiance I learned that after I was doing C++... so you can tell how much I hated learning it. It was a prerequisite to take a class and they wouldn't let me skip it so...
I did what I had to do

whoa really?

I'll never get you guys :P but that's okay

Yeah... it sucked :P

I've never even heard of Liberty Basic outside of one of the programming for dummies books. never would expect it to be taught in school.

5:16 PM
Gambas is lacking so many useful things
but my first reaction is to help adding them to it
not dropping it for being 'bad'

@IcyDefiance For and introductory course... yes
(at a Community College)
So maybe that's why :P

well Liberty Basic has very little community any more and it's pretty much a dead language, so there's not much point in trying to improve it.

ah
I thought you were referring to actuals like VB or Gambas

Gambas is a strange beast
being under development since 1999
it has some stuff like interfaces for communication with Google Maps
but it lacks a unit testing system

5:18 PM
@AlexM. but It's basic!!111!!!!!11!!

I tried VB for a bit, and didn't really like it, but I can't say it's a bad language. I was just learning C# at the same time and liked it a whole lot better.

also I should download Ubuntu again...
now that Microsoft has forced my friends to FINALLY move away from MSN...
wow that grammar...
I shoudl also stop ending sentences with an ellipses.

Yes.... too many ellipses is bad....

does "..." have a single name in English?

5:24 PM
It's called #rude!
:PPP

in Romanian we call "..." puncte de extensie (extension periods)

I don't know the technical name I just know that it means that it means extended period of silence

in english "..." is called an ellipses

some use it as a replacement for etcetera

my bad, ellipse. ellipses is apparently plural.
odd
I use it to indicate a "trailing off." more of an indication of tone of voice than any actual meaning.
wait, I'm wrong again XD
Ellipsis is single. Ellipses is plural.
English is fucking confusing.
Ellipsis (plural ellipses; from the , élleipsis, "omission" or "") is a series of dots that usually indicate an intentional omission of a word, sentence or whole section from the original text being quoted, and though necessary for syntactical construction, is not necessary for comprehension. Ellipses can also be used to indicate an unfinished thought or, at the end of a sentence, a trailing off into silence (aposiopesis), example: "But I thought he was When placed at the beginning or end of a sentence, the ellipsis can also inspire a feeling of melancholy or longing. The ellipsis cal...

5:31 PM
@IcyDefiance I can speak in english, however I'm not one for the technical details. I know basic grammar, etc

generally speaking (very generally), a mind that makes for a good programmer is also one that will be skilled with grammar and spelling, be able to recognize the difference between "your" and "you're" intuitively, and so on. I'm no exception. However there is pretty much no consistency in the English language; no rules that are consistently obeyed. It's pretty much impossible for anyone to know of all the edge cases.

Gambas shows class inheritance in the project explorer

that's pretty nice

yup

VS has a cool diagramming tool I found useful for that...one minute, I'll try to get a screenshot

5:38 PM
wish it was in the express version too :P

ah I got the professional version from MSDNAA...I think it's called DreamSpark now.
lots of free software from MS, because I'm a tech student
and my tetris clone is suddenly not building, so no diagram -.-
something like this: i.imgur.com/EMD5tuh.png

yup, pretty useful :)

everything can be dragged around, expanded or collapsed.
I can expand classes and see the functions inside
as well as which functions call which other functions

I'm guessing you can also alter the diagrams and code be altered at the same time?

not sure, but I wouldn't trust that if I could

5:48 PM
it would be only half useful without that
I do not miss such a feature though
I draw my diagrams before writing code anyway
this is what made me go with Qt
the rocker and LCD label were bundled as default controls

lol nice

actually I don't think that's a rocker
a Dial
right
the forms editor is also pretty feature-rich

OH SNAP :D Whut r u making @AlexM.

wut?
it's not my IDE

Who called it an IDE?
O-O

5:52 PM
okay, you lost me :)

what are you asking me about?

Your GUI
I see that you are creating something.... but what is it for. What is it!??!?!?
(too much emphasis on !'s and ?'s)

I mentioned earlier
it's a personal thingy, so I can control multiple voice recording stations throughout my house
for things like starting ambient music and changing lights through voice commands

I think the hardware would be the hardest part of that. probably expensive, right?

6:00 PM
yeah, but I'm not in a hurry

fair enough

for now I'm fine with having only two low quality microphones somewhere and having to go near them to say the commands
lol

then sending a signal to a computer wouldn't be hard, to control music, but what about the lights?

I'll see a bit about those later; I remember seeing a desk light going for sale, that had a bluetooth or WiFi enabled controller
and you'd control it with your phone (intensity/colour)
maybe I can get inspired by it, or something

huh, haven't heard of that before

6:04 PM
saw it on Ars Technica, can't remember the name

I have seen security systems that allowed controlling cameras, lights, and even door locks via a computer or phone, but it cost hundreds just for the software, and who knows how much more for a pro to install the wiring and stuff.

atm I'm thinking about using Raspberry Pis
my stuff isn't as demanding as some security system

@AlexM. You should make it Voice Activated and stuffz

the only cheap(ish) solution I could find was just something that can be plugged into an outlet, then lights or whatever else could be plugged into that, but that's useless for lights with wiring in the walls/ceiling
@CodeAssassin "for things like starting ambient music and changing lights through voice commands"

abstracted testing further
  Dim Tester As New UnitTester
  Dim un As New PancakeControllerUnitTest
  Tester.AddUnitTest(un)
  Tester.RunTests()
might as well turn this into a unit testing lib later on lol

6:17 PM
the world definitely needs more metal \m/
rocks out

@IcyDefiance Black Sabbath fan?

oh yeah

I reduced my country search to the statler brothers atm
hard for me to find a song by them that I do not like

listening to My Dying Bride right now

it's a pity they're all banned in Romania on youtube

6:18 PM
statler brothers...I think they're southern gospel?

The Statler Brothers were an American country music, gospel, and backing vocal group for Johnny Cash. The quartet was founded in 1955 in Staunton, Virginia. Originally performing gospel music at local churches, the group billed themselves as The Four Star Quartet, and later The Kingsmen. In 1963, when the song "Louie, Louie" by the garage rock band also called The Kingsmen became famous, the group elected to bill themselves as The Statler Brothers. Despite the name, only two members of the group (Don and Harold Reid) are actual brothers and none have the surname of Statler. The band, ...

Johnny Cash sux! Throws tomatoes!

yeah those guys. my dad likes them.
I don't like the style, but I won't say they're not skilled. They can sing.

I only managed to download Bed of Rose's (album) with my amazing 3G stick
I like the lyrics

Hello :D

6:24 PM
sup

Programming hours :D

cool

@Romeo What
@Mana I need more health

@CodeAssassin okay

A wat is a monastery temple in Thailand, Cambodia, or Laos. The word wat ( ([http://www.forvo.com/word/วัด/#th Pronunciation]), , sometimes rendered vat when referring to Laos) means "school". Introduction Strictly speaking a wat is a Buddhist sacred precinct with monks' quarters, the temple proper, an edifice housing a large image of Buddha, and a structure for lessons. A Buddhist site without a minimum of three resident monks cannot correctly be described as a wat, although the term is frequently used more loosely, even for ruins of ancient temples. (As a transitive or intransitiv...

6:26 PM
That's what mana is right... health? Or is it like something for magic?
@IcyDefiance ...(lol)

mana is usually for magic spells
typically health is the red bar that makes you die when it runs out, and mana is the blue one that just doesn't let you cast spells when it runs out.

@IcyDefiance Ohhhh okay. I don't play too many RPGS/MMO's :(

@CodeAssassin what what? :D

@Romeo What is programming hours?

programming time

6:28 PM
It's that time of the day when i am programming :D

a specific interval of time measured in hours, during which one programs

Right

I've been staring at code for an hour now, and haven't actually done anything... -.-

speaking of nana, I always liked her more than lucy
lucy was too mainstream #probablyneverheardofit

no one was speaking of nana

6:29 PM
oh
mana
my pattern matching is broken

@AlexM. u need to be debugged man!

elfen lied was a nice anime anyway
unnecessarily gory

haven't seen it, but I should

Ecchi right?
Sexyness and stuff

6:30 PM
I don't think the ecchi parts are in the highlights here

I have a friend who, when he was watching it, shouted random things like "HOLY SHIT THE RIBCAGE IS FLYING!!"

it's time to make... the JSON file for my backup program O:

haha yeah

TUH TUH TUH's'sssss

well, "shouted" in chat

6:30 PM
the violence is most of the time taken to a silly level
actually, the gore is taken to a silly level
there was this other anime with silly violence instead
with this angel thingy chick beating this random guy with a spiked club

So I need your help on something guys.. don't need to provide code or anything just some basic theory

I don't remember the name
anyway
I watched elfen when I was 10
I don't think I'd like it today

Actually
Nah I got it =)

if I were to watch an anime right now
it would be either fullmetal alchemist
or... naruto

FMA wins.
naruto is good, but real overrated. it's nothing amazing.

6:33 PM
i am torn between the two

I'd also watch ROD

@IcyDefiance T___________T

that one was nice and original

as far as hundreds of episodes long action anime go, Bleach and Hunter x Hunter win

bleach has that porn music
during combat

6:34 PM
though Hunter x Hunter isn't hundreds of episodes long yet, but it will be

top comment is accurate: Bow Chicka Wow Wow

downloading ubuntu, can't use youtube :(

well imagine the best porn in history

@IcyDefiance ;-;

this music would be in the background

6:36 PM
@AlexM. NO

6:59 PM
Should I use XML or JSON

flip a coin
