3:06 PM
@ToddersLegrande @ShotgunNinja @Almo @BogdanMarginean Can you all visit www.tompiddock.com/gallery and let me know how you find the loading times?

oh boy. everything is different in XCode 4

I'm interested in you clicking on the pictures to bring up the lightbox
please be aware the lightbox isn't finished and I fully appreciate the images wont be scaled / positioned properly :P

2.5 sec to load first time, subsequent clicks fine

It's loading quite fast

Wish Gajoo was here, he's perfect to test the extremes :P

3:07 PM
it's a legit loading time
:P

Cheers you two :)
brb

Yeah, that loads within a second on mine.

@Blue load seems find. I get weird scrollbars in your lightbox on some images though
Also you could probably speed up your loads if you shrunk down your images to be the actual view size - I right clicked and opened the image in a new tab to find the actual images are much bigger

^^

@Blue rejoyce!

3:14 PM
@ToddersLegrande yeah, agreed

@Blue who called me?

@Gajoo thank you for answering to our desperate call @Gajoo
@Blue is in distress

@blue testing your site

@Blue I see the previous image pop up until the new one loads

he desperately needs your help
you're his only hope
@Gajoo godspeed!

3:16 PM
the page loaded in only 27s it's almost twice as fast compared to last experiment
and only 1.3MB was transferred compared to 1.7MB in the last experiment

@Blue
It paid off didn't it?
Being online at that time

Hello @Retrosaur - it certainly did

Darned daily cap though right :3

@blue not sure if it's a bug or a feature, but when you hover over the picture and it completely gets colorful, it's the title disappears

@ToddersLegrande This I am working on, I just have the original sizes right now, I was tempted to simply link them to the image to load it in full. Let them decide on their browser view if its scaled or not.
@Gajoo Bug, will fix it though :)

3:20 PM
oh no. Xcode 4 removed Perforce support. those hosers!

@blue just noticed, if I hover my cursor in the image border (the white area around each img) it remains black and white, while the title raises up

curser? so it swears at whatever you put it on? ;)

@Almo funny thing, spell checker didn't complain about it :D

it casts curses on objects

:D

3:22 PM
-3 def on that poor <img>

@Gajoo I think I'll leave that.

@BogdanMarginean dynamic_cast<Curse*>(pObj)

@gajoo titles sorted, I'll leave the border title popup thingy

@ShotgunNinja lol

So @Retrosaur - how was it returning to 6 times the rep?
Right that's me signing off work now guys n gals, tips hat may talk to you if you're on later tonight.
gg

3:32 PM
cya

I've just found the largest c++ header I've ever seen
8240 lines of code single file!

larger than my dink.h?

my whole projects are usually less than that :|

(the one I posted a while back)

@BogdanMarginean I don't remember that one
@BogdanMarginean so how big was that?

3:34 PM
@BogdanMarginean This sounds naughty.

@ShotgunNinja lol, I used to play dink smallwood the most when I was ~10
only a while ago did I notice what the name actually meant
dink SMALLwood
or is it smallWOOD
check them out :D
@ShotgunNinja but I have to admit
my construction is definitely more naughty
but yeah, I doubt anyone can find one larger than my dink.h
>:3

looking at windows SDK there are even scarier monsters there
@BogdanMarginean it's almost half size of the header I was talking abou.

well I'd say 8240 lines of code isn't that scary, depending on the size of the project

@BogdanMarginean single header 8k is not?
what about 50k in a single header?

no, 8240 in all

3:42 PM

Q: What is a PR-bomb?

bobobobo@TrevorPowell said he deleted a lot of this question's details due to a "PR-BOMB". I'm not sure what he means by "PR-BOMB" To me that question does appear to have an agenda of some sort.

single header usually means faster compilation, so maybe it was purposely placed there

windows.ui.xaml.controls.h in winrt devkit
it's 2.1MB

@Gajoo fwhoa

@ShotgunNinja and AFAI could see, it was pure C++ code, without any CLI flavor!

@Gajoo Good. Fuck CLI.

3:53 PM
@ShotgunNinja without CLI

1 hour later…
4:57 PM
@ToddersLegrande I differentiate using this.privateProperty and parameterVariable.
I prefix everything class private with this. or base.
But that's personal preference. I'm sure people will claim I'm wasting time doing so. :P

5:42 PM
Lol last day for the compo.... still working on it

@CodeAssassin Which compo?

@ShotgunNinja STEM Video Game Challenge 2013 (highschoolers + middleschoolers)
v_v lol sweating bullets (I kind of overslept)
Compo ends 11:59 PM EST

Wow, that sounds awesome.
What are you using for the competition?

Unity

Oh, all right.

5:50 PM
:P I would have used XNA but then I haven't went into the 3D capabilities of XNA. For scripting I've use both UnityScript(or javascript whatever the heck they want to call it lol), and C#
Boo looks weird. Didn't touch it :P

I did waste valuable time though on getting scripts to compile in the right order.
used iTween for smooth animations ^_^b
Newgrounds for awesome music

make sure you credit them!

@ToddersLegrande Music: Code Assassin - <not my music title go here>

Yeah that's almost right :P

Just because piracy isn't a loss of sales doesn't mean piracy isn't wrong
The sense of entitlement and justification some people have is sickening. "I can't afford this game / it's not worth that much / I refuse to support an evil publisher" so "I'm just going to pirate this game instead of paying for it"
2

6:19 PM
I sum that up as "People are such idiots.... facepalm"
I just don't understand people
I honestly don't even have a torrent application on my PC right now. The only time I had to install one was to get some humble bundle games
I'm sure there are some good / legit uses of it (right? RIGHT??) but I haven't had a need

@ToddersLegrande Large linux distros is the one I can think of
but others use the tech, like Blizzard has P2P built in to their downloader/updater

Yes! The tech is definitely good and I did know that about Blizzard's Updaters
I do like the example of large linux distros too
Download one speedy quick

@ToddersLegrande It actually a separate process. A lot of people kill it because it causes lag spikes.

What is?

Blizzards ptp update launcher

6:27 PM
Torrent software is an application and should run as a process separate from... everything?
Ah

At least it doesn't install Pando Media Booster© like League of Legends does...

I've explicitly turned it on before
And when I'm downloading stuff I generally am not playing a game or anything bandwidth intensive at the same time since my goal is usually to finish the download and start playing the game as soon as possible... so the lag spike thing has never been relevant to me I guess
Obviously torrenting is going to eat your bandwidth

lol yeah I guess 5000 thousand bullets doesn't make much sense

meh. We get the point, :)

6:36 PM
@ClassicThunder Wouldn't it be easier to say 5M?

@ShotgunNinja you jokester

every time I see a window like "would you like to install Norton Security Scan..." during some software's install wizard, I really start to panic
and search for random "I do" buttons I might have missed
so they don't install crap on my machine :(

"Would you like to install Ask.com toolbar in Internet Explorer"

no please... wait nvm
they can install whatever in IE
don't use it much
but they better keep outta my chrome!
if IE had a nice way to import all my stuff from Chrome and then still keep it in sync between machines
I'd try IE 10
I like it when I go to my other PC and set some bookmarks
and they get set when I open Chrome on my other PC

yeah I have the same reasoning
"Why don't you use IE 10? It's great" --- "because I use Chrome and it's basically the same thing and I have 100s of bookmarks that are synced between my cmoputers"

6:46 PM
Who uses bookmarks? :P
@Jimmy you must be old
Weak memory :P

I've been old since I was a wee tot

I really dislike Chromes search address bar thingy.

I used to use del.icio.us religiously before it died

If I want to search for something similar as before, I have to delete the extra parts.
Seems odd to assume I want to repeat a search. Instead I'd like to just hit the down arrow key to repeat it.

my browsing routine consists of visiting different bookmarks
they're easier to work with :D

6:48 PM
The only problems I have with search/address bars is when I want to search for something that ends in .NET or something like that. JSON.NET for example
This obviously won't work :P

I do like Chromes addons better though. Chat popups are sex.

@will I usually hit space it's faster than reaching for backspace
also, funny wording. Chrome's popup blocker usually blocks the sex chat popups :P

Haha :P
Another thing is, oddly Chrome doesn't run as well at my resolution.
IE10 and FF is fine.
Might be a hardware specific thing.

and the text-rendering seems to be different
in general I like IE's rendering better but sometimes it comes out too fuzzy
the kerning seems more natural though

@Jimmy I feel like I read about that somewhere before... I think it took advantage of something in the OS.

6:53 PM
last time I used FF on my machines was 5 years ago

It's possible I'm making this up though... false memories and all

I was also an Opera guy for quite a while
especially in my Win 98 days

weren't those the days when most sites would just look really funky on Opera because everyone designed for IE?

have no idea, was really young back then
every site looked good to me

As good as websites could look in the 90s anyway :P

6:56 PM
wasn't in the 90s though
I was well into the XP days with Win98

Oh.... I'm sorry.

when I upgraded to XP, SP2 was already launched
no worries, was fun if you ask me :D
I made a Win98 VM a while back and ran it at 1080p through hacks

jeebus

downloaded an old opera build from some random website
used waybackmachine
awesomeness
.mid's would sound different on Win 98 than on XP
I still have no idea why

Because midis are just instructions

6:59 PM
really? :O
lol that's news for me

There's no actual sound in them. You say: I want a horn to play at this pitch for this long
Which is why sound cards made midis sound amazing

I get it now, makes sense

Yeah, that's why most classic console games use MIDI sequences.

there's also a midi maker for the GBA
can't remember the name though

Generally speaking, it was nearly impossible to do streaming sampled sound on anything predating the Playstation One.

7:01 PM
It's also why you can hook up physical, musical keyboards to computers with MIDI software and have the sounds play out the keyboard

This is also why midis are tiny compared with other formats, :)

ITS ALSO WHY DONUTS

I LOVE DONUTS

Because donuts.

WHY ARE WE YELLING

7:01 PM
I tend to enjoy using caps randomly
for emphasis

@ToddersLegrande Oh, that makes sense.

DYO DYO?
oh no I got it wrong
fsck;
TYO TYO

HWOOOOAH

DYOOOOO

7:02 PM
mm, I want a donut
4

We can put that on the star board right next to "Now I want pizza..."

re midi soundfonts: here's onestop.mid :P

7:04 PM
sounds like jazz jackrabbit

I downloaded so many midis back in the day

I'd exchange midis with my classmates
through IR (phones)

@BogdanMarginean you must not play League of Legends?
if you don't remember the sound Udyr makes :P

only played 4 minutes, didn't like it much :D
man I've been HTML-ing all the time in the past few days
shit's addicting

what does that mean

7:09 PM
@Jimmy one of my friends mains Udyr, it's ridiculous how good he is with him.

@Jimmy it means I can't stop HTML-ing

I've never played Udyr. But I can't imagine playing any melee bruiser with no mobility

Apr 26 at 15:51, by Bogdan Marginean
BUT KEEP IT AWAY FROM MY FULL BLOWN DESKTOP GAME KTHX
Just saying
Though to be fair I guess you are working on mobile right now :P

well I'm obviously not writing GTA 6 in HTML5

But you had so much hate for HTML that day ;)

7:12 PM
well I like the way I think now
bits of UIs being divs and stuff
and positioning them accordingly
it's really easy

I believe that was a con you had listed previously :P

it actually makes a lot of sense
@ToddersLegrande the fact that it's easy to UI in it?

@Jimmy He's got a lot of mobility, if you activate his stances.
Plus, you build him to the point of extreme movement speed.

I think @Gajoo said it was for dumb devs or sth

just a movespeed increase though
no gap-closer

7:14 PM
@BogdanMarginean ?
what were you talking about?

Apr 22 at 19:50, by Bogdan Marginean
but maybe it's just me; throughout the time I had my share of script kiddies who can write "anything" in html and js

like, someone with a phage-item could kite you all day

@Gajoo you said HTML was for <sth> minded devs

@BogdanMarginean I guess thats not quite the same
but still... I'm just poking fun at you :P
I love that your attitude about it has done a complete 180

@ToddersLegrande oh that, well yeah I did have my share :P
I kinda change attitudes like that all the time :(
sometimes it's nasty because I get confused
but from another point of view, I get to try a lot of new stuff

7:15 PM
At least you are open to changing your attitude even if resistant at first
You just need to be more open at first :P

@BogdanMarginean I agree, the web stack is pretty great to write UIs in

Soooo great

@ToddersLegrande yeah that would work :P

Outside of that, keep JavaScript away from me :P

nothing really beats the tooling for web UI. It's why XAML is such a drag in comparison

7:17 PM
Apr 27 at 19:56, by Gajoo
@ToddersLegrande what can I say? I never liked HTML, it's designed for simple minded people :D

Most of you have probably seen this, but here's the UI for Asteroid Outpost: jcpmcdonald.com/AOScreens/HUD.html

much more fully featured, but no one wants to build libraries or usability into WPF

JQUERRRY

jQuery is fantastic.

yes, needs more jQuery

7:18 PM
totally

JQUERRRYYYYY

there's also a nice arithmetic jQuery lib

GET $

make dem checkboxes pretty

GET $()

7:18 PM
you can use it to calculate stuff like 3 + 4

@JohnMcDonald looks sweet

You pressed ESC yet?

opens the link again just so he can press ESC

7:19 PM
OMGGGGGGGGG
@JohnMcDonald you are awesome

@ToddersLegrande same :O

isn't "Nothing" the Visual Basic null?

did you use jQuery for that too? :O :O :O

@ToddersLegrande wut?

@Jimmy yes

7:20 PM
The back button on the Server Browser screen doesn't work

yeah.... work in progress
:(

@JohnMcDonald I'm just being super excited for you. Nothing in particular

@ShotgunNinja Press ESC to go back

A brief hyper moment

7:21 PM
@ShotgunNinja too bad it's not available in later versions

what do later versions use? o.O

I'm Nothing-ing everything in VB 2010
and it works

@John, Can you make it so the cursor doesn't change to a caret over the text?

I think it does that as expected in XNA

7:23 PM
but I'm sure I can add some CSS to stop that

Pretty sure it works fine in Awesomium.

Yeah I'm pretty sure there are CSS properties for cursors

I really need to work on AO some more

it looks like you could have just built it in HTML

7:24 PM
chop chop

@Jimmy heh. Looks can be deceiving

@William'MindWorX'Mariager Chromium fanboy? Or is that another small browser?

@ShotgunNinja Awesomium is what I use to render my web-ui in XNA

decided to protect that piracy question, too many 1 rep users throwing their hat in the ring

@JohnMcDonald Oh, cool. That whole site is being driven by XNA, or is that just an HTML mockup?

7:26 PM
@Tetrad hi

I wish there was a better post notice I could add to the question along the lines of "please cite your sources"

@ShotgunNinja imagine the static background not there and a game instead. The rest would be "real" even if it isn't final.

@ToddersLegrande That doesn't really answer my question...

@ShotgunNinja The HTML you see here is being rendered over my XNA game and can the JS can communicate with the C#, and vice versa

@JohnMcDonald Ah, awesome.

7:28 PM
@JohnMcDonald so it's like magic? :O

Basically magic, yeah
heh

Built as a port of Chromium/WebKit?

Awesomium is a fork of Chromium

@ShotgunNinja its not an HTML mockup. Its HTML as the UI and thats just what it looks like in the browser. It will be an XNA game with HTML UI over the top is what I was the message I was trying to get across to you

7:30 PM
yeah

@ToddersLegrande I get it now. Thanks for the verbose explanation, though.

A little confusing to conceptualize at first, but it can provide some great power for UIs. Anything you can make a web page do, you can add in to your UI, including using plugins like Flash or straight up youtube

managed to turn my app into a two-panel thingy :D browse recipes on the left panel, and depending on your input, manage data on the right panel
now to get stuff in sync with AngularJS
wait
I can turn my html mobile apps into apps on my website :O
holy...

my main use for bittorrent is to check music to see if I want to buy it. only 4% of music in my collection is unpaid for. I delete music I don't like, and buy the stuff I do like. Many artists have gotten a bunch of money from me because I could find out if I liked their music without having to worry about buying music I don't like.

I only buy music if I want it uncompressed
Spotify covers everything else

7:40 PM
I only bought 3 mp3's on iTunes because it was really easy to do it (and I could barely find them anywhere else - one of them at least)

Loscil for example. Heard one track I liked on Pandora. DLed the album. Played it 5-10 times, decided it was good, bought it. Then bought 5 more albums and an EP from him

I did buy Rom Di Prisco's albums though
that guy's music is amazing

@Almo Youtube it in those cases then the person get add revenue and you can decide if you like it

I buy most of my stuff from iTunes. 256 kbps AAC is indistinguishable from CD audio. did a blinded test on it. Neither my wife nor I can hear the difference, and we're both quite musical.

Youtube probably is the most comprehensive music collection that exists

7:42 PM
In fact, she thought she could tell the difference in the baseline test. then when I put on the blind, she realized she couldn't tell. :D
Experimental design FTW.

So ACC doesn't narrow the band like an MP3 does?

I don't know what's different about it. I just know that on our $4k stereo system, there was no difference
I haven't been able to tell the difference in $300 headphones either
between AAC and CD I mean
no idea about mp3; haven't used it in a very long time

Nice what headphones? I'm a bit of a headphone geek.

Grado SR-125, Etymotic ER-4
My wife just got Sennheiser Momentum ones. Those are awesome too.
now she has more expensive headphones that I do! :D

Never had a chance to try the Grados :( though I hear the're great for rock and acoustic stuff. I have the Dennon 5ks and Sennheiser IE80s.

7:47 PM
The Grado SR are as close to flat response as I've heard in headphones.
well they sound flat anyway
I don't like bass-boost
they don't block any sound though
great for work so you can still hear when people want to talk to you :)

I like a bit of base boost. Its what I'm used to from live shows.

ah right

@Almo Sounds terrible :P

the Momentum ones have a little bit
of bass boost
not a ton, and it's clean
Beats by Dr Dre... eesh.
comfy, but i don't like the sound

I use Sennheisers
cheapest consumer stuff though
nothing pro

7:49 PM
Yeah their ok over all but for the price they are terrible.

My Bose were a huge step up and quite comfy compared to any other headphones I've ever put on my head

Yeah, Grado SR-60 sound way better than Sennheisers in similar price range
But higher Senns do sound nice
when shopping for her new ones, we heard some that cost a lot that sounded horrible

Grado's are pretty exotic few people know they exist.

wondering who bought them

My little IE80 are delightful

7:51 PM
yeah, true. and if you just see the packaging, you might think they're just cheap
but it's just the packaging that's cheap. :)
I got lucky. A pal working at a stereo store recommended I try them

Do the grado's need an amp?
