@NapoleonWilson Really? You didn't know that? Well, he also got her pregnant and made her have an abortion...according to her book, at least.

@steelersquirrel It's not that I didn't know that, I probably just forgot. I haven't seen Sudden Impact as often as the other films.

@NapoleonWilson They were a real life couple for years. They're also in Every which way but loose and it's sequel Any which way you can

@steelersquirrel I know they were a couple.
@steelersquirrel Not sure meesa be ever seen 'at.

@Randal'Thor I'm not ;)

@NapoleonWilson Are they having an Eastwood marathon or something?

I don't know, apparently.
They aired John Rambo and Raiders of the Lost Ark before, though.

Okay. Goodnight :)

Q: What is the reason for the 1999 setting?

Napoleon WilsonA Walk Among the Tombstones, while being from 2014, is set in 1999, as mentioned at the beginning of the film as well as in repeated references to the "millenium bug" hysteria in newspapers. But since the Lawrence Block novel it is based on is from 1992, I wondered why the filmmakers deliberately...

I have no idea why they are popular.

Because they look cute
But I have none because there price is not what I expected from it
3000+ Rs for Dr Strange pop head is too much

@AnkitSharma I have no idea what that is in £

@DrRDizzle approx 34.63

Holy hell that's a lot.

But I noticed that there Amazon US price are quite low

Why do people go so wild over those stupid big head thingies?

I can go crazy over them if they are 400-500 Rs each but I am not going to spend 9k on them per piece
I think in India they are not even popular

I recently bought two Transformers action figures of Hasbro; one's price was 900 or sort of that and other was 2000.

user116211
@AnkitSharma Totally too much.

Now my plan to have a pop head army is dropped
@NapoleonWilson But sorcerers stone is more famous even if it's not original title.
But not a big deal, now we have other title as synonym and I can live with that

user116211
10:29 AM
I have a plan to buy some Star Wars action figure and then Flash.

I'm not arguing for or against thar title. All I'm saying is thar your comment was inaccurate.
This is not a US site.
Beaides that, IMDb claims that Sorceror's Stone is the original title anyway.

Sorceror stone is more famous title outside UK
Even in India it was Sorceror's stone
I know JKR like philosopher title more

I know and I'm not arguing against that. I'm in favour of that title, but not because it's the US title.
It's just that statement that was inaccurate.

@NapoleonWilson I just shipped them in Reddit secret Santa giveaway ;)

Q: Is Chandhramukhi / Manichitrathazhu / Bhool Bhulaiyaa a partial copy of Vertigo?

GautamI watched Vertigo recently and I noticed that there were some really striking similarities between Vertigo and Chandramukhi/ Manichitrathazhu /Bhool Bhulaiyaa. Is it true that the makers really copied Vertigo, or was it really original?

^ Do this question need title on all three Indian films too ^^ @NapoleonWilson
Or at-least Manichitrathazhu, the original one?

@NapoleonWilson Hmm, I have only figures from Hasbro; no Lego; I'm not kid to play with toys nor I was so interested in playing with toys but I indeed like collecting them. Not a crazy hoarder though.

user116211
10:41 AM
@AnkitSharma Really nice.

@MAFIA36790 Oh, so you're one of those that leave them in the original packaging?

user116211
@NapoleonWilson Why should I open them? They remain secure in the package as well as the value doesn't decrease; although initially during my childhood days, I used to open the G.I.Joe action figures; they are standing still in several areas of my house like Deep Six standing in the shelf ;)

So you're collecting them as an investment?

user116211
Hmm, no; as I said I'm not a professional collector; during festivals or so, I get the chance to buy one or two of them; that's it. They remain secure in the package, so that's why I don't open them now.

user116211
10:57 AM
@AnkitSharma I should say the mentioning of the original one is sufficient.

@NapoleonWilson holy moly

Wikipedia calls it PS but says it was released as SS in 'some countries'.

11:44 AM
Using "of" instead of "have" if you are a native English speaker is just utter and plain dumbness that cannot be excused by anything else.

It doesn't help that IMDb calls SS the "original title" but PS the "world-wide (English) title".

Meh, I'm not going to get into a prolonged argument over it.

:33937854 but that lady has habit of answering any weird stuff you can think

Indeed. Well, doesn't she have a website full of fan-fiction canon stuff like that?

11:56 AM
Being as the film used an all British cast, based on a British book and was filmed in Britain, I'd wager it would be best to call it Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone rather than Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. Also, Wikipedia refers to the movie by the British name.

Forgot to say I enjoyed Interstellar again but my poor sister hardly understood anything. We need to explain her what is light speed, wormhole, black-hole, 3 dimension etc etc
Now I can understand @steelersquirrel's pain more

@DrRDizzle We know, we know.

@DrRDizzle But IMDB, RT, meta-critique doesn't but we discussed that point already. You are late to the party

Ah, fair enough.
It still makes me laugh that the word "Philosopher" was replaced with "Sorcerer" for Americans. Was "Philosopher" too long a word?

Because Philosopher word can't attract american kids as per WB

11:59 AM
Well then sod them.

@DrRDizzle Maybe they simply call that actual thing it refers to differently to begin with. Afterall, the concept of the philosopher's stone predates Harry Potter.

@NapoleonWilson Oh, I'm aware of that. But I didn't think they called the Philosopher's Stone itself the Sorcerer's Stone.
Either in the movie or in real life.

@AnkitSharma No need, some Mos people are in here too ;-)

rand al'thorYes. @Randal'Thor Hmmm fair enough
@Randal'Thor lol

12:01 PM
Hmmmm, from IMDb trivia;
> The movie is known as "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" everywhere except the USA and so every scene in which the Philosopher's Stone was mentioned was filmed twice (once with the actors saying "Philosopher's" and once with the actors saying "Sorcerer's") or redubbed (notably, one of the times Hermoine says it in the library, her face isn't shown). The reason for this was to keep the films consistent with the book series: the US publisher, Scholastic, had changed the title (and corresponding text) to "Sorcerer's Stone". The title change was done with the consent of author 'J.K. R
Being as the USA is the only place it was renamed, I say we go with the actual title.

@Randal'Thor AS expected, that lady don't know when to stop her mouth

@AnkitSharma Why?

@NapoleonWilson she answer every stupid question, that raise more stupid question.

At least, that's Himarm's explanation ... but then, projection much? :-P

12:03 PM
@AnkitSharma Why? What question does this answer raise?

SFF is full of it, like rape speculation, bestiary from HP universe

@Randal'Thor Yeah, I'd turn to someone else for a reliable source. Besides that, that wasn't what I was actually asking.

@NapoleonWilson Did wizard also take part in WW2 too, what about cold war, did wizard killed any nazi?

@AnkitSharma I doubt she ever said anything about the rape stuff. She can't be that oblivious.

@AnkitSharma We know the wizards had a hand in WW2 - Grindelwald.

12:05 PM
@AnkitSharma HP fandom is full of it, not just SFF.
Ever ventured into the world of HP fanfic?

@AnkitSharma Well, that's reasonable questions then. What's stupid about them (other than that I don't want them asked here)?

@NapoleonWilson Bestiality is certainly implied in the books.

It's not like her statements about WWI involvement contain any contradictions, do they?

@NapoleonWilson If they're reasonable questions, why don't you want them asked here?

@Randal'Thor As a joke. I don't think Aberforth actually did that.

12:06 PM
Maybe I drop by SFF when Rand is sleeping and ask Are there Nazi wizard in potterwerse?

@AnkitSharma Deatheaters.

@DrRDizzle Still, the idea is there.

@Randal'Thor Reasonable questions in general. Their usefulness for the stie is about to be assessed depending on the actual questions and their relevance for the actual films.

@AnkitSharma It's like you've never even seen these films/read the books.
@Randal'Thor Centaurs and Umbridge too.

@AnkitSharma Nazi as in literally Nazi (e.g. members of the Nazi party during WWII), or just having Nazi-like beliefs (in which case, what Dizzle said)?

12:08 PM
@DrRDizzle I have seen first 4 and I tired watching the last four but got bored to hell. Have seen FB recently
@DrRDizzle hermoine rape too?

@AnkitSharma Read the books dude. If you have any interest in reading, you won't forget it.
@AnkitSharma What? No.

@DrRDizzle Was not that famous SFF question

I'm sure Hitler would have loved those guys. I'd get me some for my army, too. The question is if wizards sensitive to ideas like that wouldn't rather be anti-muggle to begin with.

@AnkitSharma I don't know/care.

HP extended universe irritate me more the even films

12:10 PM
@NapoleonWilson I don't understand why you're worrying about "usefulness for the site" rather than just letting people ask reasonable questions.

@AnkitSharma Then you must be easy to irrit - what am I talking about, we know you are.

Although it might explain the relatively small size of this site ;-)

I watched FB only because there was no Emma Watson

@Randal'Thor Um, dude. "How do I decalc my senseo machine?" is a reasonable question, too. I was talking about reasonable questions in general.
Gheez.

@AnkitSharma :O

12:11 PM
@NapoleonWilson Sorry, I don't even know what that means.

Good, this means we're done with this discussion.

@AnkitSharma Not a fan?

@Randal'Thor which colour toilet paper people use in HP universe is not my concern.

@AnkitSharma What? Emma Watson is awesomazing!

@NapoleonWilson You like Mara sisters too, so I can handle this

12:12 PM
I don't think Emma Watson was a good casting choice for Hermione, but she does seem to be pretty, um, highly regarded as an actress.
@AnkitSharma There's no evidence in canon for that anyway.

We have better pretty face out tehre

Oh, damn.

@AnkitSharma Pretty sure it would just be white.

@Randal'Thor I am sure I have seen something related to wizard toilet in SFF with many upvotes
@DrRDizzle I have seen pink one in real life, I am sure there will be more colours
I hate when spell correct say that I spelled colour wrong :?

@AnkitSharma That's quite possible, but there are more things related to toilets than the colour of toilet paper :-)

12:15 PM
@AnkitSharma Maybe, but Hogwarts is just a school. They'll either have (excuse the pun) bog-standard loo roll or a spell to do it. "Cleanus Rectum"?

MauricioSo, I have been thinking of things people have to do regularly that (presumably) witches and wizards will also deal with. Do they use toilet paper after going to the toilet? Mikasa PinataI know that the students have to change into robes before arriving at Hogwarts, but where do they do this? They usually seem to just get members of the opposite sex to leave the carriage, pull down the blinds, and then put on the robes. So, are there toilets on the Hogwarts express?

@DrRDizzle But he can do magic without wand but only when it doesn't even needed

12:19 PM
@AnkitSharma Because HP is infinitely better than GoT on the level of SFW-ness.
How many books/movies have you seen that mention toilet paper? — Misha Rosnach Oct 26 '14 at 5:31

Time to drop on meta to suggest new short form SFFT ( Science Fiction, Fantasy and Toilets )

@AnkitSharma In that case, I'll come over here to suggest MTVS (Movies, TV, and Sex).
Or even SMTV, since S gives you all your HNQs.
:-P

Who don't like sex?

Seeing how Slughorn didn't what a muthaeffin' dentist does, I doubt those guys know anything about real life.

@AnkitSharma Asexual people?
> Doctors? You mean those Muggle nutters who cut people up? Nah, they're Healers.
^ actual quote from the books

12:23 PM
That's what was so nice about Fantastic Beasts. It actually showed a real world and wizards trying to cope in the real world and having to interact with muggles, rather than living in their own little fairy tale bubble like in all the other films.

@Randal'Thor didn't assexual people like sex but not with others

Asexual people by definition don't like sex at all.

@NapoleonWilson I liked FB more then 3,5,6,7 and 8 film.

This question has been cross-posted to SFF.

@NapoleonWilson ohhhhh. Maybe there are subtype in it too or maybe I got confused with any other sexuality

@MAFIA36790 But they look nice on Mathematics itself.

user116211
@NapoleonWilson yes.

user116211
Wait, let me see...

@MAFIA36790 Hmm, I don't even understand the statement there. What's the difference between being a linear combination of the sequence (a_k)_{1\leq k\leq n} and being a linear combination of the set \{a_1,\dots,a_n\}? Surely they're exactly the same thing?

user116211
12:37 PM
@Randal'Thor Hmm, no.

(Well, they are the same thing, as shown by this proof, but how were they defined differently in the first place?)

user116211
Linear combination on a set means the concerned vector can be expressed as a sum of finite sequence of vectors of the set. So, in a sense, the latter is the sufficiency of the former, while the former is the necessity of the latter.

user116211
I need to remove extra lines.

@MAFIA36790 A sum just of elements of the set? Not of scalar multiples of elements of the set?

@NapoleonWilson I feel like you missed a pretty big aspect of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - it's illegal for Wizards and Witches to form relationships with No-Majs.

12:40 PM
Whereas a linear combination of the sequence means scalar multiples are allowed?

user116211
@Randal'Thor yes. I have no mathjax here so that I might write here in exact terms.

@MAFIA36790 Are you sure you haven't got that the wrong way round? It says a linear combination of the sequence is "clearly" a linear combination of the set.

@DrRDizzle Um, what makes you think I missed that?
They nevertheless still showed the wizards interacting with the real world.
They didn't live in some magic-only special castle without any muggles at all.

@NapoleonWilson "It actually showed a real world and wizards trying to cope in the real world and having to interact with muggles, rather than living in their own little fairy tale bubble like in all the other films." That's not the world Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was showing. It was showing a world with legally enforced segregation.

@Randal'Thor uhuun

12:44 PM
@DrRDizzle Yes, and characters that had to cope with breaking that segregation and the disadvantages and advantages therefrom. Besides that, it was effin' New York full of muggles, not a special castle in the British wilderness full of wizards.

user116211
@Randal'Thor Wait, let me re-write my question for there are unnecessary lines there; as for your query, okay, let me re-read the excerpt again.

@NapoleonWilson True.

To me the biggest problem of Harry Potter with regards to plausibility has always been the utter disconnectedness of this world from our real world and the implausibility of its unnoticed existence behind it. They always just brushed that off by them never actually having to venture into our world at all.

@NapoleonWilson Well... it is set in a boarding school.

Not that Fantasctic Beasts cleared up that much in this regard, but it actually showed wizards coexisting with muggles at least.
@DrRDizzle Sure and the films made sense in their own right and with regards to their own story and its environment. But once you try to reason how the broader magical world actually works and how it crosses into our world (or not), the whole things starts to make much less sense at all. The world building just didn't seem to provide a strong enough fundament for sufficient plausibility.
Start with one of the first scenes, do those guys on the train station actually see people running into a friggin' wall?

12:52 PM
@NapoleonWilson JKR's world building was never that great.

Then you have all those strange questions about how much "muggle technology" wizards use.
They seem to live right next to us but Slughorn doesn't know what a dentist does.

HP is a fun read and makes some nice points, but it's not such a wonderful and earth-shattering piece of literature as some of its more rabid fans seem to think.

@NapoleonWilson I'm like 90% sure that the wizards just wait until the Muggles aren't watching. I think Molly Weasley says so in the first book.

@Randal'Thor Sure, it makes sense as an entertaining kids' book. But once you try to make that huge universe out of it, you have to stumble across one or the other nonsensical Tweet.

@NapoleonWilson 'xactly!
@DrRDizzle Have you been to King's Cross?
How do you make sure nobody's watching, in a place that size with that many people?

12:55 PM
@NapoleonWilson Well most wizards/witches aren't interested in Muggle lives. There is a reason that Muggle Studies is one of the least popular NEWTs.
@Randal'Thor Dude, I was at Platform 9 3/4 itself just over a week ago.
@Randal'Thor Well there are a number of spells that can make Muggles not pay attention to certain areas. One of those on the wall itself would mean they just look straight past it. Harry talks about that when he goes to The Leaky Cauldron for the first time.

And then there's the girl in the diner that says Harry's newspaper moves. Multiply this by 7 billion and you can't tell me people don't notice that world.

@NapoleonWilson "Obliviate".
Problem solved.

@DrRDizzle Yeah.

@DrRDizzle Using a spell isn't the same as "just wait[ing] until the Muggles aren't watching", which is what you said :-)

@Randal'Thor Both can be true. Wait until the Muggles aren't paying attention to enter the area that Muggles can't watch.

12:58 PM
@DrRDizzle "Obliviate" must be one of the most commonly-used spells in the entire Potterverse - and for what? Why do they even need to keep themselves secret from Muggles?

@Randal'Thor The Statute of Secrecy.
An international agreement to keep the wizarding world a secret from Muggles.

I'm half-hoping for a sequel in which the existence of the wizarding world becomes public knowledge after all.
(well, no, I'm not, but still)

@Randal'Thor Because of assholes like that witch hunter lady from Fantastic Beasts. Multiply that by 1 billion and amplify the religiousness.

The only big question I've ever had about the Wizarding World is how they decide which creatures are magical and which ones aren't. What's magical about a Niffler? Or a Bowtruckle?

@DrRDizzle Muggles don't know them? ;-)

1:01 PM
@NapoleonWilson I have no idea who you're talking about. I've avoided FB like the plague the other FB.

@NapoleonWilson But Muggles don't know them because they're classed as magical creatures! It's a loop!

What is magic to begin with?

@Randal'Thor Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is actually a really (yes I'm using the word) nice movie.

@Randal'Thor I'm sure you do, still was the easiest reply to give.

@NapoleonWilson A force of some kind that Muggles are unable to tap into.

1:02 PM
> We can do anything now that scientists have invented magic.

@DrRDizzle The original films were a bad enough betrayal of the HP franchise. And I'm not even a HP fan!

@Randal'Thor No, they weren't. They were as accurate an adaptation of these books as could be expected.

@DrRDizzle "But Muggles are defined as people who can't do magic! It's a loop!"
;-)

@Randal'Thor And I say that as someone who doesn't really like them.

@Randal'Thor Well, the author of your beloved HP books wrote the screenplay. Fantastic Beasts has more right to be called genuine HP than that camera-less film about Voldemort's child.

1:04 PM
@DrRDizzle I utterly disagree.

@Randal'Thor It's not that they can't do magic, it's that they don't even have the potential to learn magic. It's a biological thing - even with a wand, they wouldn't be capable of casting even the most simple of spells.
That's how we define magical and non-magical people.
But magical animals don't use magic, or wands.
So what's magical about them?

Best way to make you appreciate a book you never particularly liked: watch the film adaptation, and realise how much worse the story can be made.

@NapoleonWilson I quite liked Harry Potter and the Cursed Child too.

That's worked for me at least a few times.
@NapoleonWilson You won't catch me defending CC - quite the opposite.

@DrRDizzle That's good to hear. You also consumed it in the way it was supposed to. Noone reads a movie's screenplay and complains about the film afterwards.

1:05 PM
Though, didn't JKR also have significant input into writing that?

@AnkitSharma OMG. I feel your sister's pain!! ;)

@steelersquirrel hahahaha

@NapoleonWilson True.
@Randal'Thor Reportedly.

Though, it's great how about millions of people always know how they could make film adaptations so much better. Take some screenwriting and directing lessons first, dudes.

@AnkitSharma Was she all annoyed how everyone else in the frigging world thinks that movie is the best thing ever? ;)

Q: Why was Amanda Hunsaker's death considered a murder?

steelersquirrelIn the opening scene of Lethal Weapon, we see Amanda Hunsaker high on drugs jumping off of a balcony to her death. Her autopsy report states that she had taken pills laced with liquid drain killer and she would have died if she had not have jumped off of the balcony. BURKE: Got some news on...

Q: Looking for possible Hercules legendary journeys episode

AdiposeLexYes, I mean this series: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hercules:_The_Legendary_Journeys Anyway, I'm not entirely sure if this is indeed an episode of the series since I cannot find an episode that fits what I'm gonna describe, but anyway, here are the story points: The two protagonists are lo...

Trying to remember what I thought of Interstellar when it came out. Flawed but still really good, I think.

I'm so over asking questions for a while. I'm exhausted ;)
@DrRDizzle I was literally baffled the first time that I saw it.

@steelersquirrel I've always been fascinated by the concepts that the film is playing (particularly time dilation), so I understood most of what was going on.

It's mostly due to the fact that people just fail to acknowledge the difference between the media. If you don't make a movie that shows them the book's pages in optimal reading speed the adaptation failed, of course, since it's, well, not the book.
@steelersquirrel Awww.

@steelersquirrel She never heard about this film before

1:31 PM
@NapoleonWilson Yes. Murtaugh tells her father that she was murdered. Now I will have to go search for that god damn quote, now. Argh!

I see.
But maybe he was still speaking colloquially, since she was at least murder attempted. (Or he wanted to not make it worse for hisby saying that ahe killed herself.)
But the question makes more sense now.
@steelersquirrel You don't have to look for the quote, though. You could just say that he tells Michael Hunsacker it was murder.

@NapoleonWilson Nope. Found it.
LAPD rules her death a murder.
I just want an intelligent answer. Where are the guys that answered my pulp fiction and die hard questions? ;)

1:48 PM
Yeah, can we stop just smashing answers at that thing that make either unbacked claims or just restate what's in the question?

I know, right?
@NapoleonWilson I'm not going into work early. My boss won't be there until 10am, anyways because of the road conditions here. So, I will talk to her at lunch, okay?

@steelersquirrel Sure, don't worry. Don't stress out about it. From 27th onward I have basically unlimited time anyway. You're the one who has to take care of things.

@NapoleonWilson I know. It's just really hard to catch her and she will be in later. She said that she needs to speak to me one on one in person. She can't just tell me over the phone or email for some reason ;)

@steelersquirrel Oh. o_O

@NapoleonWilson Oh, God. What does that mean?

1:57 PM
@steelersquirrel Well, I don't know, hopefully nothing serious.

@NapoleonWilson Oh, it won't be anything serious. It will be her bribing me with a bonus asking me to work through the holidays...that's why she wants to speak with me in person, I can pretty much guarantee it ;)

@steelersquirrel Oh well, you can work during the holidays as much as you want, as long as you're free afterwards. ;-P
