Q: Predestination ending scene

chrisupi007In the movie Predestination (2014):

I still don't get how the hell that friggin' hand can twitch even 30 years later, that's the only thing where I can't follow Thorne's reasoning. Maybe I should try tomorrow (today?) in the 3 hour window when I have access to his book and am entirely sober. There might be things where alcohol helps the understanding, but gravitation combined with brane theories apparently isn't.

@ChristianRau: Did he get it to twitch even thirty years later? I can't remember. Was it not just in that room at that time? Or do we see it twitching when she is in NASA or later in the film?

Q: Why are drivers in movies and tv so callous?

Mr PurpleI don't know how many times I've seen the trope of a person or object in the middle of the road for a short period and then they get completely obliterated by some motorist who doesn't stop. This is not how most people in the world act. It's starting to jar me out of the story now. Out of many ex...

@AndrewMartin That's what I thought at first, too, but the movie as well as Thorne indeed seem to imply it was the child's version of the watch.

11:21 AM
@ChristianRau: I'll need to rewatch it to see. I saw it once and figured the whole Cooper-as-the-ghost thing about 2/3rds through, but had already missed a few things. I'd like to see it all again with that knowledge and see what I notice.
On another note, the Guide to Interstellar has made the top of my Christmas list :D

12:00 PM
@AndrewMartin Beware, you're not supposed to throw spoilers all around in chat, I already had fear with your last message, but I'd say this one might blow it.
@AndrewMartin Well, I went to the cinema twice, but I took the availability of an original version in my cinema as a moral excuse. ;-)
That being said, I still think the movie was pretty self-explanatory and consistent and didn't leave so many open questions at all. And while Thorne's book is an interesting addition to provide some more background on those things (and it's amazing to know that he actually computed that weird stuff shown there to an extent that it could exist in exactly that same way), it doesn't really provide any needed explanations for stuff you otherwise didn't understand.
The screenwriters did a really good job to relay all that science-stuff to the laymen audience in a convincing and consistent way. Thorne and Nolan really complemented each other in this regard.

@ChristianRau: Thanks for heads up, I'll know for future. Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to delete that message. Boo. I want to read the book for the science-y explanations. I feel I understood the story well enough. I didn't come out with many burning questions. But I'd love to see the science behind it all and learn a little more.
@ChristianRau: I have to say, it's one of the best films I've seen in years. I really did enjoy it.

12:15 PM
@AndrewMartin It really stuck with me somehow and even after 1-2 weeks I just don't want to stop engaging with it. And for this Thorne's book and movies.SE is just the perfect place.

@ChristianRau: Definitely. It generated a spew of (mostly) really good questions for the site. I loved the story but above all the special effects were just mesmerie
*mesmeric

The only complaint I would have is that it overshadowed Nightcrawler a bit, in that I couldn't concentrate on that so much (and there aren't many questions about it here), but that was great, too.

I didn't see it. It's another that's on my list
Along with the Hunger Games

@AndrewMartin That was on my list until I heard that the big action the trailers promised are reduced to the last 20 minutes and Katnis just travels from one publicity gig to the next. I'm probably gonna spare that for a DVD rental.

I liked the books, so I do want to see it, but yeah, that's kinda how the books go.
Plus my annoyance is that it can be Twilight-y - in the midst of all the fighting, there's the whole "which guy do I love" bit.
I enjoy the series, but I think the first book is the best and it deteriorates a little more with each book

12:32 PM
I liked both movies so far, though.

I did too. I think J Law is great

Q: Can someone please identify the movie name?

abhinandanbrThere's this movie where a boy watches lot of porn and stuff. One day he finds out there's a girl in his school or college, who also on website. He chats with her. They decide to meet. Q: Quote from what movie? "I suggest you rethink your strategy!"

CigarDougI am trying to recall what movie this scene was in. The movie takes place in a military academy (TAPS, The Blue & The Grey, etc.). The scene is one of the barracks. The main character is a cadet leader (for the whole academy), who separates two other boys who were fighting. I think both of them w...

@ChristianRau: On that Batman/Bane theory question, do you think it's worth changing the title to something a little more helpful? It's an interesting theory and it might draw attention to the question. I'd do it myself, but I'm wary of altering it since I've answered it.

2:22 PM
@AndrewMartin Don't know, doesn't make such a big difference for me (though, I understand your arguments), even if I personally don't like that asking style. But I'm probably not going to edit it, since I don't feel compelled to change that title if it isn't awfully written or contains errors, I'm already editing way too much here and that seems too insignificant/subjective a change even to me. (But I'm also not going to stop anyone from editing it.)
That being said, it contains Bane, Batman and asks if one was helping the other all along, which already gives a good WTF? moment to drive attention. So all in all it's not a bad title I think.
"I'd do it myself, but I'm wary of altering it since I've answered it." - Haha, so you don't want that Refiner badge, eh? Afterall those are the situations it is supposed to encourage.

2:45 PM
Flip, I didn't even realise that was a badge. I often want to do it, but don't in case it's seen as changing the question to fit the answer I wrote. I might actually do that in future.

iambmeltonAt 34:00, we briefly see a television depicting mass-destruction and the English words 'Rainmaker'. What is being said in Chinese on this newscast?

Ok, watch problem tackled by someone else, I should have gone reading instead of drinking, but at least we have an answer, even if I'm still not entirely unconfused. But maybe even Thorne might not be able to make sense out of the weirdest part of the movie.

Q: French Horror Film - Trapped Girl, Tortured Friend

KevinDTimmIn 2009 I lived for 6 months in France, one evening there was a movie on TV with the above plot line. The movie starts where a young woman (I believe she's a model) comes home and takes a bath, next scene she wakes up and all the water is out of the tub. She's a bit woozy (drugged). She gets a...

Q: Movie with two men who steals a car and kidnaps a girl

AndreasI can't for the life of me remember what this movie is called, and I thought I'd try this place. I saw it when I was younger, so I believe it has to be an 80's or early 90's movie. I thought it was Burt Reynolds and Dom Deluise, but from what I can see on IMDB that's incorrect. As far as I can ...

Q: What was in Marcellus Wallace briefcase?

Mr PurpleIn 'Pulp fiction' Marcellus Wallace briefcase represents a well known pop culture McGuffin. My question can be asked on many levels and I'm interested in all possible answers. What was in it: on set? from any of the writers perspectives? from the directors perspectives?
