Can be good fun looking at homework questions. Look at the users questions on other sites & you can sometimes see they're doing a CS degree. Questions on the Mathematics and Computer Science stacks, as well as here :-)

What is a DBA privilege? Do you mean something like sysdba, sa, superuser, super or similar? — dezso 13 secs ago
this is also for you, @Philᵀᴹ

@dezso Perhaps something along those lines should be addressed to the OP first, I think. It's unclear who the OP thinks a DBA, as a user, is supposed to be from the perspective of a database server.
In fact, is it possible to be a DBA without superadmin privileges? Say, when you a limited to doing a specific subset of common DBA tasks.

@AndriyM absolutely

Or maybe the question should be, what tasks can be done without superadmin privileges?

in a normal world, a DBA would be able to do all those the OP listed, but it's impossible to tell this is always the case

8:32 AM
Ah, so you don't even need an ideal world for that, a normal one should do, OK.

there is no ideal world, otherwise it wouldn't be ideal (aka the dezso paradox)
or tautology, dunno
hm, where is Philosophy.SE

Put that in square brackets, and there you have it.

9:00 AM
Oracle can stop some DBA-like roles doing some stuff, for proper data protection purposes
Still, the question is too broad

@TomV Yes it gives this warning when executed Warnings: ---> W (1): DB2 SQL error: SQLCODE: 437, SQLSTATE: 01602, SQLERRMC: 2 Performance of this complex query might be sub-optimal. Reason code: "2". — Mohammad Javed 22 mins ago
@ypercubeᵀᴹ ^^ shows I don't know db2 :)
reason code "2" is "The join enumeration method was altered due to query complexity" apparently

@Philᵀᴹ isn't there a . .bash_profile or source .bash_profile that could reset the PATH without reopening a terminal?

@dezso Yes. it's easier to tell them to close and reopen

@TomV Illuminating ...
@TomV Interesting. See this, too: ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSEPGG_9.7.0/…
Is the query actually having performance issues? How much time does it need to run? How many rows does it return? "I believe this is causing performance issues is because I get a warning" is not very convincing. — ypercubeᵀᴹ 42 secs ago

@JzInqXc9Dg No. Old style joins (or comma join or ANSI-89 join) cannot give you outer joins. There were proprietary extensions to the syntax, like the *= and =* in SQL Server and Sybase and the (+) syntax in Oracle for writing outer joins but none of them made it into the standard. The (more flexible) LEFT/RIGHT/FULL OUTER JOIN syntax was adopted.
Oracle was the latest I think to implement the new (ANSI-92) syntax so there are probably more Oracle developers that have been used to writing or reading code with the old syntax.

11:16 AM
@ypercubeᵀᴹ True story. Took me a while to get used to proper joins!

Q: Consolidate Large Number of databases

NishYou just inherited 1000 databases from 50 different projects that were all developed differently and on different platforms/versions. You need to consolidate to one single Amazon x1.32xlarge instance running a single enterprise database platform. How would you do it?

@Philᵀᴹ Haha
A. Hire 1000 programmers
B. Quit

Q: Are training guides in scope

PaparazziThis question is not directly about poker. learning-modern-mtt-basics-in-limited-time It is asking for traing guides. Is it in scope?

@Lamak yup

hi :-)
sorry to summon you, but I wanted to ask you a question

@bluefeet this meta.dba.stackexchange.com/questions/2627/… is on the wrong meta, if you're bored

well it's already deleted

2:35 PM
:)
How are you, anyway?

I'm great. How are all the heapers?

I think we're all awesome

^^^^^yeah, that
@bluefeet I have a question about the developer story thing

@Lamak ok
I'll do my best to answer it

thanks
Is there a way to change the url?

2:50 PM
@Lamak yup, go to your preferences and there is an option for your public link. If what you want hasn't been taken, then you can get it

@bluefeet I've tried that
but this happens when I do that:
well, can't screenshot the mouse pointer
but it doesn't let me

did you try delete first?

@bluefeet ......
I haven't
well, that goes to show I'm kind of an idiot

@Lamak did that work?

yup, thanks @bluefeet (though the UX isn't very clear)

2:54 PM
@Lamak can you post a suggestion on MSO to make it clearer?

@bluefeet I'm comfortable showing my stupidity here, but not so much to broadcast it to SE :-)

@Lamak ok, I get that

Oh god, it knows me so well. "I prefer not to work with ... " "NoSQL"

I'll mention it to the team

@bluefeet you are the best
@bluefeet anyway, I have to say that I'm kinda liking it

2:58 PM
@Lamak I only just worked out where your username came from :P

yeah, I'm not a very imaginative guy
@bluefeet Is the developer story done?, or is SE thinking on developing it more?

@Lamak We are iterating on it based on feedback from users. We've gotten a lot of good feedback about some sorting issues, etc that we're working through but overall we're sticking with it.
I'm glad you're liking it.

@bluefeet yup, it's nice. Where are you getting feedback from?
Because I would like the option of a "language" setting. So I could link to a spanish version of it and an english one
for instance

@Lamak MSO posts

aha

3:05 PM
gotta ask for stuff if you want it changed :)

yup
I'm thinking that I don't really need it that much :-)

Good answer:

A: DELETE statement conflicted with the REFERENCE constraint

David SpillettThat is the whole point of foreign key constraints: they stop you deleting data that is referred to elsewhere in order to maintain referential integrity. There are two options: Delete the rows from INVENTORY_ITEMS first, then the rows from STOCK_ARTICLES. Use ON DELETE CASCADE for the in the ...

3:25 PM
@bluefeet does this seem like a good feature-request?
> First of all, I know that SE primary language is english, and I'm fine with that. But I was thinking that adding a "language" option to the developer story would be a nice feature to have. To clarify, I'm not asking to have another language to the UX of the developer story, just to choose a language to display the information in it.

If this is added, all the information in the languages that the user chooses, would be filled by the user itself.

So, for instance, http://stackoverflow.com/story/some_user/en would show every item in english (if it was filled by the user) and http://stackov

Sounds good.

alright. I'm gonna post it now, wish me luck
;-)

@Lamak +1

aaaw thanks

@Philᵀᴹ and et al, what does the team here think of this mod-message to Ali posting about his homework?
Hello,

I'm writing in reference to your Database Administrators Stack Exchange account:

http://dba.stackexchange.com/users/109010/ali

Welcome to the Database Administrators site Ali. This site has as a focus helping professional DBAs solve the problems they face. The question you posed is not really for professionals, it looked entirely like a homework assignment. I might direct you to the [help center](http://dba.stackexchange.com/help) if it can help! :D

Unfortunately we don't do homework problems here.

5:49 PM
@jcolebrand seems reasonable. Can't see the users question history from his user page though

@Philᵀᴹ It's this question:
You had made a comment

I don't know. Rather than explicitly categorising questions as homework, it might be better to focus on whether the question shows any effort on the OP's side.
A homework question can still be a good contribution for the site.
On the other hand, I agree that it probably makes sense to emphasise that showing effort is particularly important for homework questions.

6:37 PM
@AndriyM This one had absolutely no attempt so ...
I should say that normally I 100% agree with you
We aren't blocking all homework questions
We do have a minimum level of effort, that's all
But saying "come back with your next homework question" sounds a little ... like the wrong way to solve the problem?

6:56 PM
Yeah, I'm with you. My first reaction was a little too categorical as well. I mean, in the end I wouldn't entirely disregard the fact that the question is homework.

7:08 PM
Examining a execution plan earlier when I realized it went off my screen. Kept zooming out and zooming out and zooming out until I got this:
Any ideas why this query might be running slowly? XD

Are they joins?

@AndriyM I don't know I can't read that far away
To be clear I'm not actually asking for help
Just sharing something ridiculous

Now I'm starting to wonder what kind of art I can make with execution plans...

No, I mean, there's clearly a pattern there and I'm just curious what produced it, i.e. what was in the original query, many joins or something.

@AndriyM If you want I can send you the 8,000 loc stored procedure

7:25 PM
loc?

Lines of Code

I see

@mikeTheLiar Only to satisfy my curiosity? Thank you very much, I don't think that's worth your trouble :)

@mikeTheLiar meh

@AndriyM it's also driven many lesser developers mad

7:28 PM
your turn

....I don't wanna play anymore.

Actually found that in the wild, not kidding

ERP-generated? Or built by live humans?

@Forrest I don't remember, I think ERP generated by a borked attempt at table inheritance

@Forrest or the third option, developers

7:31 PM
@Lamak Hah!

I believe I got that from the first attempt at table inheritance by the Dynamics team at Microsoft

@TomV Pretty good stairway to heaven cover SQL Server is doing there.

seems more like a stairway to hell to me

@Lamak No, you get through the clouds about 1/4th of the way up, can't you see?
can't you??

I can now
freak
;-)

@TomV Or maybe 3/4 of the way down

7:39 PM
I don't want to remember, I tried to forget but I can't
The goggles, they do nothing

@TomV ah, the simpsons

8:41 PM
And now at the #Sqlsummit Community Zone Spotlight hour we have Australia, New Zealand, APAC. Come get your #sqltimtamslam
Excuse me, trolling duty calls

@billinkc you are excused

9:29 PM
@Forrest A Sierpinski gasket or Mandlebrot query plan would be awesome :P
@ypercubeᵀᴹ I know I had, I failed at locating the question :P
