@MDCCL Yes it's fine, I just alerted you in case it was something you felt particularly passionate about.

@MDCCL Yes, in my opinion. By the way, if you want to suggest a duplicate before you get the vote-to-close privilege, simply flag the question "should be closed...". This will put it in the review queue for close votes.

Q: Data back up from one to another remote server

Atul JoshiWill it be good to do the data mirroring from a remote location as a back up instead log shipping.

ha, already hit that one
I must be in a mood, with all the VtC I cast already

Wish you could reject edits after the fact. dba.stackexchange.com/posts/125474/revisions Why not properly tidy it up? :/
I've not seen a question like this on here, then two come along at the same time for different RDBMSes. How odd. dba.stackexchange.com/questions/125475/… dba.stackexchange.com/questions/125464/…

@Phil the intention is different
but yes, it's a bit odd

@dezso The MySQL guy is in step 2 of the exercise ;)

This is a good read. queue.acm.org/detail.cfm?id=2874238 Highlights the fact that IO isn't the bottleneck it used to be

@PaulWhite Ha!

@MichaelGreen Reads The Heap :)

10:00 AM
@Phil @Aaron Bertrand will love it. It takes just two lines to get to the word 'performant.'

Ugh.

Performant is actually a real word. It's another name for an actor or performer.
Sometimes I try asking people what actors have to do with their query runtimes but it usually goes over their head.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells But it's used only once.
"performance" is used a lot and less "efficiency" and related (efficient, inefficient, efficiently)

10:24 AM
I wonder if there isn't some work for an enterprising dev optimising Postgres's back end for SSDs.
We've got a punter expressing a sharp intake of breath at the cost of SQL Server licensing at the moment.
I keep watching PostgreSQL. 9.5 has a cube operator, which means that you can do materialised view backends for Mondrian.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells there are some config options one can use to hint the optimizer

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells and it's about to be released.

Yes. I would like to see a more mature parallel query facility but I think that's the only significant missing feature.

The schedule was for December I think. There was only 9.5rc1 at December 15

It's had window functions for a while. CUBE operator is a win for materialised views used behind OLAP type queries.
Now we need a decent front-end tool.

10:30 AM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells psql

@dezso I was more thinking about an ad-hoc reporting tool like the sadly lamented ProClarity.
Specifically for cubes, although one could do a ROLAP system.
Or even, dare I say it, an in-memory system.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells wouldn't Greenplum be an option, too?
Was it you or someone else that commented here that it's been open sourced?

@YperSillyCubeᵀᴹ There is an open-source version of it now; the paid version was actually quite a bit more expensive than SQL Server.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells that would be very welcome for a very wide audience, I'd guess

OCRY -- SAP table name that does actually sound like a cry for help. Some poor dev is out there sobbing away

11:46 AM
@Phil How on earth does that stand for "country"

@TomV Same reason that a column is called GrosProfit in one table, and GrssProfit in one of its child tables. I don't know whether it's due to laziness, or plain stupidity. Possibly a combination of the two over the years.
I've been tempted to create views over the top to give everything sensible names

@Phil That would possibly be a best-selling product

12:56 PM
@YperSillyCubeᵀᴹ my fault, I suggested the wrong one

1:14 PM
@YperSillyCubeᵀᴹ Done!

@Phil I've seen this sort of thing done for AS/400 systems, where the column names in DB2/400 are restricted to 8 characters. At one point I wrote a script that read data from a policy admin system vendor's data dictionary and generated a set of views from their 'short description' entries. You could actually sensibly run ETL or do data profiling from the views.
As I understand, table and column names in SAP are typically abbreviations of German words (or at least were historically). They're quite famous for being obtuse.
If you build something like that anybody who actually has to do reporting or data extracts from the SAP system will probably love you and want to have your children.

I'd probably get sued by SAP for being useful

@YperSillyCubeᵀᴹ maybe not a postgres

@dezso It's long and unparseable to me at least on a quick read.

@Phil Why are you using ntext? Are you in 1990?

3:44 PM
@PaulWhite No, but SAP still is.

How sad!

@PaulWhite Legacy systems Baby!

I have seen a rumour to the effect that the SAP R/3 database schema runs to 40,000 tables in all its glory.
Back in 2000 or so - when the Sun E10K was state of the art - they still featured quite significantly in the top 500 super computer list, but the biggest single user base of E10K systems was actually ERP users.
Think about it - people using the same model of kit that featured in the top 500 supercomputer list to run their accounts and inventory.
From insearchofstupidity.com:
ERP

Acronym for enterprise resource planning. A class of software designed to integrate every aspect of a company's operations, from customer service to warehouse management. Frequently, use of these products requires a business to "reengineer" its business processes, which in turn often leads to the need to placate angry customers who are receiving multiple bills for items they didn't order. This helps drive purchases of CRM software.

@PaulWhite that's fine. no worries. i'm not effective at much at any point in the day

@PaulWhite no luck. fast 1 produced something truly horrific

@swasheck How about with the USE PLAN hint I provided showplan xml for?

@PaulWhite i honestly didnt even try that yet

I guess it's possible you'd need SP1 CU4 (!)

question was re-posted here, but doesn't really seem on-topic even though the original question had a comment it would be a fit here
This is a question you better ask on dba.stackexchange.com. This deals with database administration. You will have better chance of getting a good answer there. Also do not post a screenshot of the exception trace, copy the text, paste it in your question (use a code-block to make it more readable). — TT. 9 hours ago

apparently rob ford is running for mayor of toronto in 2018. all is right with the world again.

I think it should be closed but I'm unsure for what reason
recursion back to stackoverflow would be a nice mind-game but I think the sensenet support forums is the way to go
thanks @billinkc, that fits the bill

6:31 PM
@PaulWhite Indeed, I find it very interesting. I'm thinking about adding an answer with some personal suggestions that I consider useful in order to create accessible (and, potentially, more succesful) modeling and/or design questions, but I'm not sure if that's the right place to post something like that...
@PaulWhite Yes, now that you bring it up, I definitely should have proceeded that way, I didn't recall that suggesting a duplicate would put the post in the review queue :)

Has anyone had this issue? Application has big delays connecting to SQL Server using the SQLNCLI provider but connects instantly using SQLOLEDB. Where to look to even start resolving this?
The client took the servers down the day before yesterday "to move racks". The issue appeared after they restored access. (Before the event there were no delays using either provider.) I'm not sure what could change and I'm not sure if it's even our problem, but it would be nice if we didn't have to rewrite the app to use a different DB provider as a resolution of this.
Everything I'm finding so far seems to be general questions about how to get past the delays rather than how to eliminate/reduce them
(So people are advised to increase the connection timeout, which indeed helps me to connect through SSMS but isn't the right solution for our app.)

7:16 PM
Weird. That's about all I got. It doesn't make sense that there'd be a routing issue specific to CLI so that's out. I suspect there's some trace you can turn on somewhere whether it's a Fiddler clientside or something serverside to see the steps the connection goes through but logically, it doesn't make sense that one would be fine whilst the other isn't
if you RDP onto the server and open a connection to localhost, both via ole and CLI, does it present with the same symptoms? Restarted the service?

The code is short and explains itself. — J. Doe 2 hours ago
Uh huh.
@MDCCL Anything goes on meta.
@MDCCL Posting here was fine too; I was making sure you knew of the flag option :)

@billinkc Restarting the service is out of question at this point, this is a production server and it's the client's working hours now. What I've tried was creating a test .udl and playing with providers. On the SQL Server machine, both Native Client and SQLOLEDB connect instantly. Over the network, however, I couldn't make Native Client connect at all. (More specifically, it was Native Client 10.0, both locally and remotely.) SQLOLEDB connected fine, as I said before.
I mean, I couldn't make it connect using the same timeout I set for SSMS. I guess I'll try to increase it and see if it can connect at all.
Looks like a network issue so far, anyway.

"You broke it, you fix it"

Only remains to figure out how to convey the idea to them nicely :)

you fix it now!

This is really strange. It's only the hash right join that takes so much longer. I wonder if the number of columns exceeds some threshold that causes this. You probably should post that to the Postgres performance mailing list. — a_horse_with_no_name 9 mins ago
Not a real database :)

8:55 PM
@PaulWhite because it usually works?
aka 'How many DBAs do you need for installing Oracle?'
@a_horse_with_no_name also the hashing that precedes that join has an enormous amount of batches. It seems that work_mem is very limiting in the second case - no idea why (if the tuple width estimation if the planner is correct). — dezso 14 secs ago

Looks like an interesting question.

fffffffffffaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

9:25 PM
@swasheck I agree

could someone else please say "yes optimise your queries then"
Queries are taking almost 5-15 min. 15 min for those dimension which has huge amount of data and 5 min for small dimension. As I have primary key defined on the identity key and I can see that SQL Server has generate a simple execution plan for that. I don't think I can optimize that. Nevertheless, I appreciate your response & I've marked this as an answer because what you have answered is perfectly valid. — Zerotoinfinity yesterday
the simple plans I bet are "clustered index scan > select"

Bail!!!

I have no idea how to convince him

@TomV an actual plan would help a lot, I bet

It took a week to convince him to trace his queries, I'm not that patient

I see a chat room in your future if it continues :)

Not with this guy

Oh go on, it'll be cozy. You can chat, get to know each other, become ... friends for life.
Doesn't that sound nice?
There comes a point where you've done all you can, reasonably.

Maybe we attract a sort of questions in the SSAS tag with less experienced, sort of "hey i'm de db dude I inherited this" questions you can't really answer in a single go because a lot of the basics lack and then you end up explaining

Perhaps, though I don't think has a monopoly on that phenomenon by a long shot.

maybe but thats usually the tag I end up in chat with
all of them were on that topic

9:34 PM
Hm you might be right then.

I like ending up in chat with a SSASy girl

@Zerotoinfinity when seeing the word 'optimizing', one usually expects an actual query execution plan. Could you add one to your question? — dezso 23 secs ago

@dezso yes I got the inbox ping, thanks
He's now your responsibility :)

@TomV fortunately, I don't know a single thing about SQL Server, not to mention SSAS

@dezso That's a contradiction. You seem to know that SSAS has to do with SQL Server.

9:43 PM
@AndriyM that's not a thing

I have been thinking about moving some of the discussion into the answer, but that would blur it too much and make it less of a general answer and more of a personal troubleshooting session
originally I hoped he would run with it and then I would have told him to post his query as a different question but that didn't work out

@TomV You were probably right not to do that, given that the bounty notice said, "Canonical answer required"

@AndriyM then he went on to not award the bounty because it didn't solve his problem

Which is a little strange, because that should be the reason not to accept it either and yet they did accept it.

@AndriyM I see what you did there
He could award the bounty and not accept but he accepted after the bounty was half awarded automatically
not that it matters but I didn't think of it that way
