@Mark that's great - even I understand it now :p
and goodnight

A: Unique Constraints on Nullable Columns in SQL Server 2005

Martin SmithThis concept has already been suggested by @Meff but just to provide some example code (reproducing the unique constraint from the filtered index definition in the question). CREATE VIEW dbo.User_UserName_UQ_VW WITH SCHEMABINDING AS SELECT pinNr FROM dbo.[User] WHERE UserName IS NOT NULL GO CR...

Hello All
I'0m back

@gbn hello
are we talking about the same kind of snapshots?

Ahhh
I'm on about LVM snapshots of the entire machine rather than database snapshots
I've edited the question to make that more clear

afternoon chaps

Hi @Mark
@gbn I wasn't aware database snapshots existed :)

Your LVM will be inconsistent most likely.
I distrust anything except BACKUP DATABASE to backup a database

@gbn indeed, but no more so than if I pulled the plug on my physical server and then started up again - SQL Server will perform crash recovery no?

gbn
correct, by using the log file to redo, undo with a consistent MDF

@gbn Can you remember which Profiler events will log the transaction isolation level?

gbn
nah
never considered it

4:32 PM
@MarkStoreySmith the Sessions:ExistingConnection will show you all the connections options, including transaction isolation level

Good stuff, cheers.

@MarkStoreySmith - Re: the guy changing answers just to add links to other answers, that should be stopped. Widespread edits to follow a policy must be agreed on beforehand, and I think that guy's changes fall under: "Do it if you're editing for some other major reason. Don't just do it for its own sake." @JackDouglas et al do you agree?
anyway, i'll follow up tomorrow - i'm out

by @nick, and i agree

9:46 PM
@JackDouglas I think I can put together an example for your snapshot question, that works. So hang tight :)

11:03 PM
@MarkStoreySmith well well well I'd pretty much resigned myself on that one :) I'm interested to see what you come up with...

Just to clarify a point or two, which I'll repeat in the answer
You have log backups?

@MarkStoreySmith yup

So you must of taken a full backup at some point right?

also yes

Yup, not a problem

11:05 PM
current plan is to take a full backup every day and log backups intra-day :)
@Nick can you post a link to one of the edits - I've lost track a bit

Not done it before so having to make sure I can script and prove it

I am very intrigued but I will try and be patient
:)

Hold tight :)
What we have to assume is that restoring from your VM snapshot leaves you with a transactionally consistent database, as you mentioned in comments the equivalent of pulling the power cord and letting crash recovery run
laptop out of power, will plug it in and come back later :)
