7:01 PM
@JackDouglas hey, the heap ambassador is here

Hi @Lamak

Comrade ambassador

@billinkc you wont say that when you are a moderator

That's funny

@JackDouglas what a coincidence that you appear here when the US decided to reopen the embassy in cuba

7:03 PM
Amabassador KFC just doesn't have a ring to it

@Lamak have you noticed Sanchez is doing pretty well over here?

A hamper refers to a set of related basket-like items. In primarily British usage, it refers to a wicker basket, usually large, that is used for the transport of items, often food. In North America, the term generally refers to a household receptacle, often a basket, for clean (out of the dryer or off the line) or dirty clothing, regardless of its composition, i.e. "a laundry hamper". Typically a laundry hamper is used for storage and will be sturdier, taller and have a lid while a laundry basket is open and used mainly for transport. However, some parts of North America make no distinction between...
So children don't get wrapped presents or are christmas hampers for more adult to adult giving?

@JackDouglas yup, hopefully he keeps playing like that

@billinkc ours don't we put them in a pillow case and they dip in
exactly the same suspense as wrapped, but a lot less effort/hassle

I picked up a little wristwatch for the older boy. I kid you not, the moment I put the last bit of tape on it, the bloody alarm went off
The greatest thing in the world, for me, is gift bags. I hate wrapping

7:10 PM
'cos you mucked around with it to 'test' it before you wrapped it?

@JackDouglas No
...yes
So, I made the calculation that he won't be near the tree at 709 to hear it go off

@Lamak wait, is his last name really "Sánchez Sánchez"?

@JackDouglas yup

seems excessive

@JackDouglas I mean, last names, plural
well, we have 2 last names, so

7:14 PM
I don't think you can have more that one last name...

@JackDouglas we do here
one from the father and one from the mother
and there's no "changing your last name if you are the wife" thing

basically it's the opposite of what's normal here - children take the mothers name, right?
OK, both, but the father's name get's dropped for their children

@JackDouglas obsession?

either that or each generation has more names than the last and that could get annoying

I would say that's the opposite
with the "should I change my last name if I marry" and such
@JackDouglas children take both last names, the first one from the father, the second one from the mother
@JackDouglas ?
nope

7:20 PM
Mr A B + Mrs C D ----> Child B D, right?

@JackDouglas nope
would be Child A C
> I’m speaking of where you went to KINDERGARTEN. Believe it or not, these factors also still matter in Chile
^^^^ that's just ridiculous

oh, OK, so the father's name carries on down the generations?
@Lamak I promise not to believe everything I read on the internet any more!

@JackDouglas yes, that's true
@JackDouglas well, I'm sure that somethings are true about last names, but they matter just as much as they do on every other place

I wonder if that naming schema makes it easier or harder for the phishers to get your mother's maiden name. Do y'all even have to deal with those shenanigans in peru?

@billinkc nope. There's no changing names for the mother, so no need to try to guess it

7:27 PM
peru?

If you call a financial institution here, they usually ask for some private information to verify who you are. Mother's maiden name is extremely popular. Assume that is not a practice there?
@JackDouglas (trolling)

<--- slow

@billinkc nah

Wish we'd get rid of it

just to be sure that you are actually @billinkc, what's your mother's maiden name?

7:29 PM

@Lamak Sanchez Sánchez -> Half Murican, half not

always been a bit suspicious of 'eau de toilette'
...though my French isn't very good

Swasheck, you knew my mother?

I'm beginning to think my architecture team is populated by idiots. Apparently they think it will take 4-6 weeks to stand up 2 file share VMs and swing our SQL backups over to them.
Adding to the fact that apparently clustering VMs is a "no-no"

that's it, I'm quitting my job
> Your Klout Score went up
Time to retire

7:56 PM
@MikeFal we have that here. they have a "policy" against RDM volumes to facilitate windows failover clustering

@swasheck I honestly don't care so much about that, I'm happy if they want to leverage vmotion. I'm more stunned that they think it would take 3 months for this project. I just need a file share server. 1 file share server, 2 LUNs.

They have to mine the precious minerals, forge them into the metal and that takes at least 3 weeks, assuming you aren't fighting the Chinese over the land

@MikeFal we were just told it'd take 3-4 days to change the names of our mount points
:/

@billinkc Obviously we need more pylons

Bro, do you even Aiur?

8:07 PM
do we want this on dba?

Q: Can I sacrifice consistency to allow concurrent 'insert or update' and read access to a single table with SQL Server?

Collin DauphineeI have a table that contains two columns: a resource key, and (very roughly) when it was last accessed. I have a number of servers that are periodically dumping data about resource accesses to the table. They should either update the access time for a resource key if it already exists, or insert...

@billinkc I don't always play Starcraft 2, but when I do, I play Terran.

@MikeFal I don't always play SC2, but when I do, I get pwned like a gheyz0rn00b that I am

Shit, son. I never play ladder. I'd get the same treatment

@bluefeet my guess is yes, ish

I play the campaign and 'eff around vs. the computer with my friends.

8:11 PM
Are you able to play offline?
The older boy would like to play offline as he used to be able to, many years ago. The documentation basically says instead of having the handy play as guest, you need to disconnect from the interwebs and it just works
Assuming you've logged in within past 30 days
I don't want him to have access to my battle.net account so that's out of the question

It's been over a year since I've played. I think I played online, just against the computer.

I need to modify a column that has a unique index on it. Knowing nothing else, preference on drop and create the index versus disabling and then re-enabling with the check option?

you have the option?

I assume so. I usually just go the lazy route of drop and recreate but thought I'd ask

8:20 PM
I'd guess you will have to drop that index even if you can disable the constraint
but I'm just guessing

Ah, well then. I will continue with my lazy route

I don't think there's a whole lot of difference. Re-enabling with check does a rebuild, so there ya' go.

Ok dokey. Sort of figured it'd net out to the same but am trying to consciously ask myself if this is "really" the best way to do tasks.

8:35 PM
hahaha
> 'The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies': Any magic the trilogy had is mostly gone

This horse will be beaten until it resembles the author

i wonder if "eventual consistency" strikes back?
> Johns Hopkins mistakenly welcomes wrong students

8:54 PM
My guess: someone queried for status <> 'Admitted' instead of = 'Admitted'
Because they forgot to check it before they pulled it. You would be surprised how often this happens in end user land.

JNK
Or Status <> 'Rejected' and 'Waitlist' got in

but we absolutely MUST have the ability to write our own reports. we can't wait for data pros to handle it. WE NEED IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!

@JNK Or they updated their status names and now instead of 'Rejected' it is 'Reject' so the not in clause failed.

clearly i have a very dim view of end-users being able to fling their own poo against my servers

I could make up these scenarios all day. I worked on a university data warehouse earlier this year where we were rolling out self-service BI. I have tons of these examples.
After months of validation and arguing about correctness of data, the marketing department at the university requested that we turn off DQS and MDS because although the cleansed data was probably more accurate it was making their numbers look worse and they weren't prepared to explain why that happened.

9:01 PM
@mmarie How's BG treatin' ya?

Good! Other than I'm in Toledo, OH right now

Already slapped you on a client or is this training?

client. but I'm fine on this project. It's well within my comfort zone.
This job is a lot like my last job but my coworkers are nicer and more competent and I am less stressed. (And I work from home and travel outside KC/Seattle to see clients.)

9:29 PM
Also, does anyone know of a xml file datatype to sql data type conversion "chart/resource/site"? — Rolland_Deschain 5 mins ago
Pardon my ignorance, but isn't the flexibility of XML part of the selling point? There is no type structure to hold you down?

cant nobody take my type, cant nobody hold me down. oh-oh i've got to keep on movin'

I'd sing the next line but that's the extent of my knowledge

dats cheating

if there are no rules, how do you determine cheats?

9:35 PM
"Once you're comfortable with your unit tests, you can go ahead and deploy that" Shoot, I'm so comfortable, I'm not even testing
@swasheck It's like "the game"
(you lost)

@billinkc Have you been talking to one of my former coworkers? ;-)

I was actually taking the role of not-testing

psh. testing? isnt that why we have prod?
3

That's the funny thing, the dev team didn't test (expanded a column) and when you only expand it in the app and not in the data mart, well, you can bet she gets her cable fixed

today just got awesome
we're trolling dev here now ... it's awesom

9:57 PM
Black and white photo + weird head angle + porthole style photo make this dude look like he's a Spock-wannabe plus.google.com/u/0/+KentonStandard/posts
Says the guy with a Spock hat. Fascinating
