Q: Replace relational database with "poor" design in software product with non-relational DB?

Erik HartThink of a software system you look at, based on classic, relational databases (SQL Server, Oracle), NHibernate as object-relational mapper (ORM), a business logic model layer on top and a huge number of modules (a few 100), mainly .NET based services and a few web services (with clients). Operat...

Regarding Kejser's answer, I was just listening to this: university.mongodb.com/courses/10gen/M101P/2014_September/…
To quote, "In general, it's not possible to have an atomic write operation that affects multiple documents" (Mongo's nearest equivalent of records).
Seems relevant to this bit in Kejser's answer: "While it may be true that every object in a NoSQL CAN contain the entire object graph, you are still stuck with how to keep all the data up to date with proper integrity."

Updating data in Mongo generally seems very inconsistent from what I've learned so far. The update() method only updates one document by default, instead of every document that matches the predicate. The remove() method on the other hand removes all matching documents by default.
Further, and as somewhat of an aside I guess, if you write a predicate that has multiple conditions on the same field without specifying AND or OR, the conditions overwrite each other and the last one to get evaluated wins.

@James that just reinforces my desire to never ever have anything to do with MongoDB

But when know all the landmines, you look like damn miraculous tapdancing across the field

Q: On topic-ness for questions covering publisher documents

billinkcIn this question, What is the minimum required compatibility level to use parallel SELECT INTO in SQL Server 2014? the poster contends that the question is relevant because it is I'm documenting a fact that is not documented elsewhere on the web in an easily searchable way Specific to t...

@SimonRigharts It seems kind of a mess but I feel obliged to learn about it as a 'database person'.

I have already requested that a mod clear this entire discussion thread. Meta is the right place for this (valid) discussion. This question is only about the content. — usr 7 mins ago

@ShawnMelton Which privilege are you referring to here? I am not aware of a particular reputation requirement on dba.se to answer your own question. — Paul White 35 mins ago
@PaulWhite, you are right, no special reputation is required to answer a question, yours or someone else's. I think there is a time delay though for low rep users (to accept an answer, for answering your own, not sure.)

I believe you can't accept your own answer for 24 hours, regardless of rep.

It was 8 hours for low-rep (<100) users, but it's been removed

@TimStone To self-answer?

Aye

And in the very old days, no one could answer their own question: meta.stackexchange.com/questions/6044/…

A: Clarify the "8 hour delay" self-answer message to discourage self-answering with edits or comments

LauraYour post inspired us to solve the problem differently: we eliminated that 8-hour delay on self-answers entirely. That delay has been part of the system for quite some time, but our philosophy has evolved. For over two years, we've actually let users self-answer their questions at the same time ...

@James Eh. I know enough about it to know I'll never voluntarily use it, that's enough for me. :D

By the way, @TimStone, your timely appearances are quite spooky.

Nice to know search works for someone around here :-p

I have most of Meta indexed directly in my brain, so I have a pretty high rate of success finding old posts. ;P

Clearly that is cheating.

cheating or caching?

Good point.

Disppointed to see there is no shouldIblameMETA.com

You own the internetz.

Hm, speaking of adding content I suppose I should get some changes in for Data Explorer...

@ShawnMelton I first tried Google. The problem for people like me who are just starting is we don't even know the terms we should search on to find the comprehensive answers in the links you provided. Your links are valuable & useful. — David Thielen 9 hours ago
This annoys the mess out of me. You don't even know the terms???!!!?? How about asking your question in Google or Bing, literally.
