Has anyone heard of trace flags resetting to default values when the SQL Server service is restarted

I don't think that I'm the right person to answer that. (and that's because I have no idea)

JNK
oh this is NORMAL I'm learning
amazingly The DBA™ didn't know this

I didn't know that either.....but I'm not a DBA

JNK
this is beyond frigging belief
he was accusing our hosting provider of messing with settings

12:35 PM
It's always better to blame someone else /s

@JNK I always assumed the TFs reset and can only be persisted through restart if it's a command line argument.

@JNK oh geez

JNK
@KrisGruttemeyer looks that way. I'm guessing our old instance had this set in the startup parameters
@bluefeet yeah pretty much

@JNK Just out of my own curiosity, what TF are we talking about?

JNK
@KrisGruttemeyer This one 1204 I think
logs deadlocks to sql server log
we use that for some reporting
and I ran that report yesterday
and got temporarily excited when I saw 0 deadlocks for the past week
then realized it was too good to be true so verified in SQL Sentry that there were in fact deadlocks that were not logged

12:49 PM
Makes sense. We have it enabled on both of our primary prod servers, but i, for the life of me, can't find where it's set. It's not in the startup parameters in config manager
I'd be happy to turn it off on our DW, SQL Source Control CONSTANTLY deadlocks in tempDB

1:08 PM
So, TF 3226 (suppress backup messages) isn't listed under 2005. I just tried it and it definitely turns on. Strange...

1:27 PM
My local instance doesn't have any TFs set, but I see an entry in the sql server log for Registry startup parameters which appear to correlate to the things I'd set in sql server configuration manager

@JNK wow, 1204 missed deadlocks?

@AaronBertrand I think he said 1204 was disabled but it used to be enabled.
If I'm understanding what he said

@KrisGruttemeyer worked in 2000, just wasn't documented until 2008.

obviously the file does exist as I have run it inside the Bids enviroment as the title states, I have opened the file up, look at it, admired it and notice it is there. Thanks. — Gavlaaa 4 hours ago
obviously

I'm wondering if Foglight or RedGate turn flag 1204 on automatically when they see that it's off after reboot.
@AaronBertrand That explains it, thanks

JNK
1:38 PM
@AaronBertrand trace flag 1204
I think that's the one

@JNK right, that was enabled and we captured deadlocks that 1204 didn't?

JNK
no it was DISABLED
It got turned off when the instance was restarted

Oh, ok, when you said "were not logged" I thought you meant they should have been.

JNK
the DBA™ apparently did not know this

Q: Efficient way to transpose large categorical column to one-hot table row

user2805751I have a varchar column containing ~ 8000 unique values and 500k rows. I need the column transposed so that the column headers are the unique values and the values in the rows are 1 where the row has an entry with the header and 0 elsewhere. This is sometimes referred to as one-hot-encoding. ...

Q: Distrubution1 Database Offline - I have no clue what this is

JimI have a SQL Server 2012 installation with a hosting provider that is an active/passive high-availability setup. @AaronBertrand is there a way to look into SQL Sentry to see all of the queries that were run against a server on a given day.

7:07 PM
All of the queries? No. We don't log every single query.

Dang.

We log everything exceeding the duration threshold (default = 5 seconds), anything involved with deadlocks or lengthy blocking, and then aggregate [query_/procedure_]stats data that exceeds the configured thresholds (that is a science of itself).

Sorry @AaronBertrand I had to
@AaronBertrand They are gonna keep scrolling, scrolling, scrollingbluefeet 1 min ago

If we logged every single query, most customers would uninstall.

Yeah I follow. Just kinda hoping for a miracle lol.
@AaronBertrand okay I guess what we are trying to track not that they finally gave me some details is this. ETL process ran for 2 hours finished successfully but now a table that was populated is Empty.

7:11 PM
Depends on what queries were run in those two hours. If a delete or truncate ran and it took longer than 5 seconds, you should be able to find it.

I don't have the client install at the moment.

Can you connect to the SQLSentry database?

Looking to see that now.

(You don't need the client, you just need to sift through the schema. We're trying to do a better job of showing people how to mine for this data without relying on the client.)
Not to avoid the client, but because not all analytical queries are supported in the client.

They are trying to get me set up to query that now.
^^ thanks by the way.

Q: "sql-insert" and "sql-update" were recently made synonyms of "sql"

Erwin Brandstetterhttp://stackoverflow.com/tags/sql/synonyms I think this is wrong and should be reverted. I have been using these tags to both tag and search in the past and would like to keep using them. IMO, sql-select is an acceptable synonym, but sql-insert or sql-update are not. I tried to revert the error...

It seems like a very misguided attempt at fixing the sql tags

@AaronBertrand I've found the DB but don't I personally don't have the ability to query it or look inside.
Can you point me to the right direction so that I can at least give them a point in the right direction.
Essentially I'm looking for any queries Sentry recorded that hit 3 tables within the last 48 hours.

7:32 PM
@bluefeet I like how he stated "clients are allowed to be dumb". No. No they're not. You're supposed to protect them from being dumb.

hey all ... is it in the realm of possibility that a searched case statement can use an index?

No, it is impossible, because there's no such thing as a case statement. :-)
@Zane I am looking into this.

oh, snap

@AaronBertrand ehrmagerd. i knew i was gonna screw the pooch on that

@AaronBertrand Thank you sir.

7:38 PM
@AaronBertrand so is it no for a "searched CASE" anything? :)

@swasheck I don't see why that couldn't use an index, would depend on what else the query did against that table.
And also the complexity of the expression.
For example CASE WHEN foo = bar OR date_created > yesterday OR status = 1 OR ordertotal < 20.50 END is unlikely to generate a plan that will use the right index every time.

thanks. it looks like we're pulling data from an index -> loop join with other results and then -> compute scalar with the searched case

SELECT TOP (100) PERCENT -- Why?

@KrisGruttemeyer visual designer

7:49 PM
@AaronBertrand That's what I was thinking. Finding all kinds of goodies trudging through this DB

@Zane This is going to violate all kinds of bad habits but here is a start
SELECT * FROM dbo.PerformanceAnalysisTraceData WHERE NormalizedStartTime BETWEEN <start> AND <end> AND TextData LIKE '%dbo.tablename%'
NormalizedStartTime = UTC btw
You can just use StartTime if for some reason your servers are not in UTC.

Thank you good sir.
@AaronBertrand ....
:)

Need to blog about that too... dev should all be case sensitive, dev and production should all be UTC...
(Or at least QA and production, since I doubt anyone would be willing to set their workstations to UTC.)

@AaronBertrand why dev case sensitive?

Because your code may end up on a case sensitive server. Better to catch mismatches in dev than in the middle of a deployment or migration.

8:02 PM
Then we just skip dev, too much hassle
