Good Morning

Good morning
@gbn did I understand your comment correctly the other day that you actually got the Mork and Mindy reference? And you are of course quite right. I was about 10 when it aired in Sweden.

@MikaelEriksson Yes, you did. I'm a little older I think. Showing my age too

@gbn You are showing your age on your profile so no you are not. It was produced 78-82 and I was 10 1978.

@SimonRigharts have you fixed your problem already? you were off to work quite early, I'd say

7:58 AM
Good morning
I think we're all old farts here. I suspect that in about 15 or 20 years people will be worrying about all that legacy RDBMS technology and the fact their DBAs are all due to retire in about 5 years.
And there will be a crusty old generation of NoSQL wonks that the devs all hate.

gbn
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells that have becomes ACID and ANSI SQL compliant to deal with data integrity. Because thet have to
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Suits me. ALways have something to do

@gbn I'm sure. At some point there will be a critical mass of MongoDB punters who need transactions in their PHP apps all of a sudden and start pushing the devs for ACID.
Then there will be some people who want to be able to push complex query execution into the database for efficiency, so they will start pushing the MongoDB team for a feature where they can use logic in a query that compares values in two or more different tables and can return data from more than one table at once.
Then they will have problems with data integrity as they have to update multiple tables, and will then start wondering about how they could implent 'Don't Repeat Yourself' in a database. If only there were a mechanism so that all of the attributes of a single object could be grouped together in one place and then associations with other objects materialised in the database in a way that allowed the relationship to be reconstructed at runtime.
Then someone will work out what a PITA that inlining repeating groups on a table are when you want to use this matching feature that lets you query multiple tables at once.
The article might read 'JSON arrays considered harmful.'

8:15 AM
I think they already feel the pain :-)

Then someone else will have a requirement to support M:M relationships. All the crusty old farts will be sniggering in our horlicks and saying:
'Sonny, we had that technology 40 years ago, back when people still though XML was a really neat idea.'
And they'll say:
'F- up Grandad.'

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells they already said that too :-)
"The SQL Language was originally created for individuals connected to mainframes looking at green-colored-text on their 8 color monitors to work with business data."

But at least it's web scale.

and zero-administration!
My favourite bit of NoSQL hype is: "Stop fighting the database and get ready to go into a world full of fun ... as a guideline, zero-administration is required"

@NathanJolly "It just works"? looks more like marketing then tech talk

@gbn Those "Index of /photos" contents are weird

for those who write any Perl, I hope to have this finished up next week with some additional extensions:
It's an effort to create a bridge between Perl Moo/Moose object systems and PostgreSQL stored procedures, with the possibility of runtime discovery
(so you write your stored procs to an interface and the application classes can discover the call syntax dynamically)
(sort of like web service inspired database stored procedures)

@gbn yup, I'm very intrigued. Too bad I don't have an instance of SQL Server 2012 to test this on

@Lamak You can flag as off topic (I can at least). It will not count as a close vote but it will alert a moderator. And when they get tired of your flags they will perhaps start upvoting some of your answers so you can vtc directly :)

@MikaelEriksson Plus, having many (helpful) flags is good, if you ever run for moderator.

@ypercube do you have any ideas on how I can solve the #1062 errors?

5:43 PM
@alisamii It could be a Joomla issue (or a conflict of the extention with mysql 5.6). You could ask at the Joomla forums or the extention provider.
Otherwise, the error shows you have duplicate rows. If the table is just created by the extention, I can't understand how the installation script will try to put duplicates.

well, I am getting it with multiple Joomla extensions, and the the debs (nonumber.nl for one, akeeba the other) have confirmed that their extensions are 5.6 compatible
if you want, I can send you a join.me link and allow you to connect to my computer remotely
if you think you can help me troubleshoot

Q: Optimum configuration for 4 SSD drives

QF_DeveloperI would like to move a SQL Server database from a shared configuration with the web-server to it's own dedicated box. My current budget will allow me to put 4 disks together in an array with a single hot spare. I'd like to stretch to 8+ drives but the costs are a little out of my budget right now...

that's for @MarkStoreySmith and @ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells, the SSD players :)

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells (eons after) I used to live there, yes
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells I've moved to Norway

@alisamii Is the SQL script very big? You can copy in a gist so we can check.

6:08 PM
@Gonsalu Quite a climate change there.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells haha yes

6:24 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells nice.

@Marian Not sure the question isn't a bit off topic really. I'd be tempted to vtc it as too localised.
However, I suspect it can be answered in a way that's relevant to the user at least.
Interesting - the OP works for an outfit that does a SaaS SMB accounting suite.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells yes, it looks a bit localized. But for now it's kind of easy to answer (by you or Mark at minimum) so it's clear for the user and a future looker.

@Marian SSDs aren't rocket science. I just happen to have the dosh to be an (almost) early adopter.
Should put him in touch with @JackDouglas. JD's looking into setting up a lightweight hosting service for some of his clients. Maybe the OP's requirements would be right up his alley.
Plus he's in the right location.
@Gonsalu How's Norway treating you?

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Pretty good. Especially now that it's getting warmer. Around 26C these last 2 weekends

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells who knows? maybe it will work this way and he won't buy the hardware..
@Gonsalu in what part of Norway are you? Ecuatorial Norway? :)

6:34 PM
@Gonsalu I wish it was that warm here.

@Marian Oslo! I wasn't expecting it, to be honest

@Gonsalu What are you doing now? I guess the workload is a bit more aggressive than whatever you were doing before.

but seeing the weather charts in weatherspark.com, it seems that it's not that uncommon
(highly recommend that site, btw)
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells the workload is not really that more aggressive, but moving into a new place there's a bit more of socializing
also, I'm taking norwegian classes, so that takes a bit of free time, too

@Gonsalu Oh well, at least you've got a life so you're busy for good reasons.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells heh, guess so.
I've got a bit addicted with DotA2 too, so there's that haha
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells how about you, how have you been doing
BI gigs left and right? :)

6:44 PM
@Gonsalu I've got a new gig out of town that's a weekly commute but pays quite well. I'm also doing some product design work on an industry model product for another outfit. They think they're close to making a sale.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Pretty busy yourself, I see

@Gonsalu Yes, working this weekend.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Remember to take some breaks :P

@Gonsalu What is this 'Break' you speak of?

I'd say you can pay yourself some holidays as a contractor :)

Had to urbandictionary what bob meant
I could tell from the context, but it was funny to find it there

@Gonsalu Money - originally a slang term for shillings, I think

@ypercube It's a plugin/extension for Joomla. Uses Joomla's installation interface to install, using an xml manifest. So, not sure exactly what to put in the gist. the plugin is the free version of NoNumber Extension Manager nonumber.nl/extensions/nonumberextensionmanager

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells wait, they aren't the same?

no its related to IBM switch

@jcole no, Maths are hard. I still haven't gone back to figure that out.

related to span traffic

@jcolebrand Close enough.

8:19 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Next I know you're going to tell me Santa isn't real, and I shouldn't eat the brown eggs I find on Easter.

@jcolebrand I think Santa has an imaginary component, which makes him complex.

@Saladin we are gonna need something a lot more resembling a problem domain and a lot less like "permission to ask if I can ask about asking a question"

For this reason I am also allowed to eat quiche.

@aaron I knew what what would happen when I first commented. Now I am done with that question and moving on.

8:20 PM
@AaronBertrand basically it's this: First vote is the main thing that counts, and if your first vote gets eliminated, then the points that were given to that person are distributed over the second ranked, based on how much percentage of the remainder that person should get. It is as you said very maths. Sometimes it makes my head hurt. But I followed the proof enough to see that it was very fair.

too complex or verbose to write it all here

@jcolebrand IIRC Ireland uses STV for elections. It was considered in New Zealand at one point but they went with an MMP system instead.

@saladin you're asking permission to ask a networking question here, even though it's too complicated to write it here? Am I the only one failing to find the sanity here?

@Saladin A bit off-topic for this forum or for dba.se. You might be better off asking the question on Serverfault.

@Saladin not database related. I'd advise you ask on serverfault.com (it's our sister site)

8:24 PM
All right folks, back to the ship

@Saladin what @Aaron is saying is that the chat room is only for simple questions (solution comes off somebody's mind easily), the complex ones should be asked on the site - FAQ.

ok

@AaronBertrand enjoy your wales! take care!

@AaronBertrand haha, no, I asked that same question ;-)
@Marian I did say that fully 7 minutes before you ;-)

8:45 PM
@jcolebrand well pardon me for ignoring you! I promise I will do it again if you don't ping the missing one! :)
:P

@Marian lol
I think it's fair to say that the person responding to the asker was not the one who should've paid attention

@jcolebrand well you redirected the man to the Comms Room, saw that. But they say in the room description that they don't like questions so maybe that's why he continued to ask here :).

@Marian I can't help it if you can't be arsed to form a good question ;-)
And they do rightly to ask that all questions be stored on the site so it's easier to focus on the Q, and to make it more googlable

@jcolebrand oh my, you crunky one! still pulling lots of hours?

@Marian I try.
I also didn't mean you when I said "you" above, I meant the pejorative you of those who ask questions without at least trying
At least my questions ramble on and off for no good purpose

8:57 PM
@jcolebrand I know, I know :).
@jcolebrand you like some rubber ducking, which is fine.

@Marian oy, if only I knew how to ask a question

@jcolebrand we can't be all managers, you know? :)

who's a manager? At best I'm a janitor.

my old math teacher said "a problem well asked is half solved".. I never passed that first half :).

ain't that the truth

9:02 PM
@jcolebrand looks like it is. They even built a world class site network around that concept.

@Marian I actually do seem to be developing my strengths exactly as that article starts out. Right until it becomes a sales pitch.

well ignore the sales part, but the first part is damn true.
