7:00 PM
i've been raped.. serially downvoted

it will get reversed. but the question is, who did you piss off?

@FreshPrinceOfSO i find that to be a bit of an extreme comparison
@bluefeet take your pick

@bluefeet probably everyone

@bluefeet I think that the people here are the only ones that aren't pissed with him

@Lamak that would be an amazing feat

7:03 PM
@Lamak he pissed me off when he was njk.

indeed it would

@swasheck lol

@swasheck yeah, me too
I remember talking about him here

@Lamak to be honest, that's how i found this place.

@FreshPrinceOfSO see?, you owe me one

7:08 PM
@Lamak I'll send you a bitcoin

seems fair

Ugh I'm going to have to go thump some people in the head.

@billinkc hat tip to you, my friend

A: SQL - Retrieve top(X) records even when fewer than X exist

Aaron BertrandWell, I have a solution, but I still think the requirements are ridiculous. This assumes that the source table (in my case, @t) has at least one row. If you have zero rows, what exactly are you demoing? DECLARE @count INT = 17; -- here is whatever your 'X' is DECLARE @t TABLE(i INT); INSERT @...

That was frustrating. Apparently some people don't understand the difference between DML and DDL.

@AaronBertrand Consider that I've taken full bow in response

7:20 PM
@AaronBertrand did they accept your flag yet?

@AaronBertrand i have a quick question regarding filtering profiler traces. do they pull everything and then filter at the client? meaning, if i filter by database name in a profiler trace, does the trace collect all events for all databases but only present the ones that i've requested?

@swasheck do you mean server-side trace or do you really mean using profiler to run a server-side trace? If it's the latter, and you're asking the question... :-)

um, no
NOT 10% overall. Requiring 2,000 rep in a year to maintain your 20K privileges. — M. Tibbits 41 secs ago

@AaronBertrand sorry. i'm really pretty muddy today (wisdom teeth extraction yesterday = hydrocodone today) so i'm probably missing something. also, i know less about traces than i know about XEs so my brain only thinks in terms of XEs. i suppose i should go read about profiler traces, i guess.

Please make it stop:
@BobbyScon You're going to have to provide better sample data, period. I can't troubleshoot why the query somehow starts at 11/26/2012 when the only mention of that data point is in the word problem. — Aaron Bertrand 20 secs ago

7:24 PM
@AaronBertrand I'm lost on that one. Why display duplicates in that situation??

@Zane he explains in this comment:
Sure. Don't think of it as rendering rows in a table. Think of it as showing a bunch of tiles in a Metro UI. The specific use case would be demos of the software. The salesperson sets up a brand new instance and there are blocks in the UI that show random items that meet a certain criteria. If there isn't enough data in the system to fill out the UI, because no content very little content has been created, they don't want big empty holes in the UI. It doesn't look "pretty". — Seattle Leonard 9 mins ago
So basically, if there is one Big Bird icon in the table, and they want to show 40 tiles on the screen, they want 40 Big Birds instead of 1 Big Bird and 39 empty tiles.
I still think it's kind of silly, even after he's explained it, but at least now that he's explained it, it's not the absolute silliest thing I've seen today
@swasheck Sorry, I'm not trying to be a jerk, but I think it depends on the type of filter (event/column) and what event/column you're filtering on. Like you, I don't really do much server-side trace these days, much less profiler. I don't know off-hand when database_id is filtered, but I do know that if you trace to a file or table, the filtered rows don't end up in the file or table. Just not sure where they're dropped.
@swasheck in all honesty I'd spend more time getting your colleagues up to speed on XEvents than trying to figure out just how bad their profiler traces are.

@AaronBertrand i know you're not trying to be a jerk - i didnt think you were. i just didnt want to misrepresent the benefit of an XE session over a trace. i omitted that line from the email and will carry on.

Question. Do you see any reason to ban this
where column1 = blah OR column2 = blah
and instead force this
case when column1 = blah then 1 when column 2 = blah then 1 else 0 end
I plan on building a test case for this. I was just looking for your initial thoughts.

@Zane I guess you mean where (case...end) = 1

7:40 PM
@ypercube Yeah sorry I'm running around like mad

Both constructs suffer from the same issue where you may get a plan that works well for one value of blah but not for another. What benefit do you perceive from the CASE expression? The only benefit I could see is forcing order of evaluation if you know, for a fact, that column1 is always more likely to be equal to blah than column2. And even that isn't guaranteed.

I mistyped that like 4 time.s

(Remember this one)?

@AaronBertrand I don't see any benefit that's the problem. An item we are trying to push out uses that OR logic and I don't see why that should be the case.

7:43 PM
@Zane doesn't the case handle null or false differently?

@JackDouglas that's comparison to NULL, has nothing to do with CASE
You can't check if something is equal to NULL, NULL is unknown, so the comparison is also unknown, hence false
This is true for both 'a' = NULL and 'a' <> NULL, and others like 'a' > NULL etc.

Still not sure what that proves is different...

it doesn't prove anything
except that I don't understand databases
but you do have to be careful: sqlfiddle.com/#!6/d41d8/12346
the 'case' and the 'or' aren't always equivalent, are they

In my shop that would be knuckles to ruler

7:51 PM
Not to poo on this discussion but null isn't really an issue in this situation.

Who the hell would intentionally write a query that way

meh, it's investigating a theoretical point not writing a query
real queries are far more bizarre
@Zane that was kind of what I was trying to ask :)

@JackDouglas well, on the CASE, you reversed the logic (added NOT) and changed the condition (=0 became =1). On the OR you only changed the logic (added NOT). To be equivalent you should have changed OR to AND in that one.
And thus is why writing double negatives gets you a rap on the knuckles with the ruler under my watch.

@AaronBertrand that was what this referred to:

Q: Have a lot of customers -> which design in SQL Server 2008R2 should be chosen

Roman KisliakI have a task and I don't know how solve it :) So, we have a lot of customers who should use SQL Server for their applications. Design is standard and simply: Customer -> Remote Desktop -> AppServer -> SQL Server So, now we plan create a SQL Server cluster ('active/passive' or 'active/activ...

Who migrated this?
I want to comment on the original - in its current state, it doesn't belong anywhere.
@JackDouglas ok, thought that was before you added NOT

@Zane but I'm still trying to understand why is one more acceptable than the other

Sorry I mistyped again.
I'm trying to build an argument arguing against the idea that one is acceptable and the other is not.
in my company code is automatic reject for using or they want case
I I'm building a argument that this is silly.(edited for too much use of the phrase case)

That does sound silly to me. CASE has its place but so does OR.
Of course some heaper's opinion isn't going to mean squat to these folks.

@AaronBertrand Not to toot your horn or anything but you aren't exaclt just some heaper.

OMG you take that back right now. I do have a ruler handy

8:06 PM
Every test I've run shows them building the same exact plan so I was trying to see if there was some truth to the idea.

@AaronBertrand It has to be few thousands miles long to reach here

It's part of my long struggle to make SDLC rules that make sense and have some damn purpose.

@Zane well that's what I was getting at. They'll both yield the same plan, and they'll both re-use that plan even for values that don't make sense. Which path you choose is kind of like choosing whether to fall on a steak knife or a cleaver.
@ypercube hey I've been to Greece before. If and when I come back I can find you

@AaronBertrand Perfect that's what I thought. Thanks!
I've run 4 or 5 different tests and changing that doesn't alter the plan in the slightest.

So if they want to enforce this rule, why don't you push back the onus on them to prove that there are scenarios where it matters?
That is going to be easier to prove than proving there are NO cases where it matters. But it might also flick on a light bulb somewhere that maybe the rule should be relaxed and limited only to the cases where they've proven it matters.
Think of the difference between proving there are bears in the nearby forest, and proving there aren't.

8:15 PM
I am going to push back and already have those test cases to back it up. I just wanted to make sure no one on here had found a reason that one option would be superior.
@ypercube He does travel a lot.

Just the one that I mentioned - SQL Server may evaluate a set of ORs in any order, whereas CASE - in most situations - will order left-to-right. Whether you gain anything from such short circuiting is a different story. Personally I've found it more stable to just build the query with dynamic SQL instead of using OR or CASE

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Thursday 7:30 works for me if it's still on. Sorry, missed the reply until now (there's no 'h' in my name).

@Zane I've heard about it. From January, I may have a chance to attend some presentation.
@AaronBertrand when are your next plans for the UK?

@ypercube SQL Bits, springtime

@AaronBertrand good to know about the dynamic building

8:20 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO it doesn't always work out noticeably better, and sometimes it's negligibly worse, but I'd rather have the ad hoc workloads setting on and know that every plan I'm using makes sense for the chosen parameters, than to have a plan that makes sense for some but makes absolutely no sense for others.
I'm also not afraid to pay recompile costs, but generally I work with queries that don't have high compile costs in the first place. This isn't for everyone, obviously.

I don't mind other people giving answers on the post at all, I was hoping others would add what is necessary. But this isn't what I had in mind. It's a repeat, some odd advice like "an offline database", etc. Maybe I'm being unfair :)
I struggled with this some time ago: dba.stackexchange.com/questions/47310/… I tried to summarize my experience in my answer — Csaba Toth 23 mins ago

I have a plan here that takes upwards of 20 seconds to return an estimated plan.

@AaronBertrand never really thought about recompile costs

@Zane Nested recursive TVFs?

wrong question
I struggled with this some time ago: dba.stackexchange.com/questions/47310/… I tried to summarize my experience in my answer — Csaba Toth 24 mins ago

8:22 PM
@Zane yeah, see, then that advice is not for you

@SimonRigharts 5000 lines...
@AaronBertrand Lol that is not this particular query but until I rid some legacy stuff there are some monster plans out there.

8:53 PM
If you don't mind I can give you the code what i am trying to do right now. Please help me to write the best efficient store proc. I know I am asking too much but, this will help me for my complete project. — user1882705 1 min ago

@justadayito Do you take pride in being a StackOverflow asshole?

Well, do you?

@FreshPrinceOfSO nice, maybe you should reign in your rudeness? :)

@MikeFal I think that you meant: "you are not an SO asshole @FreshPrinceOfSO"

maybe you found the person who serially downvoted you?

9:02 PM
@bluefeet yeah yeah .. give me a min

@FreshPrinceOfSO A few hours ago:
@Stackexchange Do your sites exist to actually help people solve programming problems? Or for assholes to thumb their noses at 'newbies'?
@stackexchange I'm asking for a friend that tried to get assistance with an SQL query but got shot down by a bunch of dickheads.

oh, I want to see @FreshPrinceOfSO's interaction with this person on SO

@ypercube bunch of dickheads = the heap
@BrandonBibb_DBD That's quite a harsh word. No bedside manners? It seems that my answers are positively contributing to the community.

Really?, I said so in the freaking answer

@BrandonBibb_DBD @StackExchange Sorry to hear you've had a frustrating experience. I would recommend reviewing the site's FAQ.

Oh I see the problem now... you are right; the WorkOrdersT table isn't defined but both WorkOrdersQ and UnitsT are. — D347HxD 2 mins ago

I want to know which rude comment made this person so angry...let me go look through @FreshPrinceOfSO's comment history

@bluefeet oh man...

@bluefeet That's hard work.

@bluefeet that's a pretty nice one imho

9:09 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO I know :)
too many comments to choose from!

@bluefeet that's for sure
i should check to see if i got any hate comments on my blog

@FreshPrinceOfSO joins in on twitter

@Phil way to go

@Phil I wasn't following you on twitter. Now I must add you to my heapers list

This is the most twitter action I've seen since I've joined

9:20 PM
Heh....@Phil, is that @troll - ied? :)

Trollied. As in drunk :P

Ah, not familiar with that slang

It's a Heap follow-fest!

@Phil Tempted to click because I know it's funny but don't want to get fired....
Apparently @FreshPrinceOfSO is a stack overflow asshole. lol

9:33 PM
@Zane link?

@Zane That's old news :D

@justadayito Do you take pride in being a StackOverflow asshole?

Thanks homie I can't view twitter from work except on my phone.

@FreshPrinceOfSO "Yes. Especially with morons like you."

@Zane i got you holmes
@swasheck best part is that it was his "friend" that wasn't getting help

9:36 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO which question?

@swasheck we don't know.. probably won't ever know
Has @AaronBertrand ever gotten any hate tweets?

@FreshPrinceOfSO well. his loss.

@swasheck my guess is that it's going to be a question that is really really bad

@FreshPrinceOfSO in which case we will launch a full-out Heap assault. you've taken the frontal assault, the rest of us will flank, surround, and annihilate.

@swasheck The Heap™ - An Army of Assholes

9:43 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO new chat room name?

@AaronBertrand probably my crappy browser but I'm seeing this on your web page.

@FreshPrinceOfSO no. we're just Crusaders for Correctness.

@bluefeet Can't it has a curse word. The heap would get a temporary ban from itself.

@MikeFal good post, BTW. never really used HammerDB but look forward to it

@swasheck I like it. It's not fancy, but gives you a nice benchmark you can work with.

9:45 PM
can anyone recommend a good Twitter client for iOS? not a huge fan of the Twitter app

@Phil I wonder if anyone would catch that

@swasheck I use tweetbot

@MikeFal you've seen me. i'm not fancy (though i did just get my hair cut)
@FreshPrinceOfSO he's from North Texas. tttttthhhhhhpppppptttttttt

@swasheck he probably loves guns and freedom
in that order

Desktop Support - where you have to be friendly to everyone.
@Phil it appears as though you've referred to the same woman by two different names

9:52 PM
Looks like I missed a fun day in the Heap. Too many threads to go back to, will just have to know I missed some fun.

@MikeWalsh not really. i'm high on hydrocodone and have been asking dumb questions. SO is asking dumb questions.

@Phil someone chatflagged that..

@pauska Can't say I'm surprised

and someone actually validated the flag - geez

@MadScientist THIS IS SPARTA!!!!!
random. sorry. first thing i thought was ... "This is madness"

9:56 PM
Incoming chatban for me!

@jcolebrand @AaronBertrand someone unban @Phil

I'm not banned yet

Yet. Let me toss another flag onto you

YOU WON'T TAKE ME ALIVE

@Phil well you're almost banned

9:58 PM
Nobody is banned, the flags were dismissed and the message deleted

The C word is naughty. My bad

Damnit, I demand banishment!

@MadScientist there's your ninepence

@swasheck I'm more efficient when I'm on something in the %codone family

@MikeWalsh %codone family is not entirely accurate.. hydrocodone is weaker than oxycodone

10:00 PM
@MikeWalsh that makes one of us
@FreshPrinceOfSO and less habit-forming

@FreshPrinceOfSO Correct. I know my pharmacopia. I've had to ruin more than a few Oxy highs for folks with Narcan IM..
@FreshPrinceOfSO And I should add I'm more efficient when on Oxycodone.. But there isn't much data for that.. Just the weeks after my ACL repair.

@swasheck both are habit forming

@FreshPrinceOfSO Indeed.

Gotta run. Apparently there's puddle of water stuck in the ceiling in the kitchen

@FreshPrinceOfSO i thought that the hydro variant was less

10:04 PM
@FreshPrinceOfSO as long as it's stuck you're okay
so I take it you had your oral surgery, @swasheck ?
that was you who had the consult a week ago, right?

yes. ripped those suckers right out
and at the tender age of 36

I had my wisdom teeth out at 25 or so.. Conscious sedation?

@Phil who in here would flag you?

@Zane no one is my guess, but the transcript is available outside of the room

@bluefeet I see.

10:11 PM
@bluefeet Who would read through the transcript of our crazy back and forths?

@MikeWalsh people who don't want to join the room.
I know there are a few people who do that

@bluefeet ahh

@MikeWalsh yes. i remember the right bottom tooth and the feeling of them digging in my jaw. everything else i've completely forgotten. i may have farted in the room many times and i never knew it.

@swasheck I remember the middle of my extraction. This little moment of clarity. The oral surgeon said something like "give him a little more, he's waking up" and then they pushed some more versed and I forget the rest of the procedure until my wife was in the recovery room
well maybe not waking up.. but "he looks uncomfortable" or something like that. :)

So glad I don't have to get my wisdom teeth out.
I have tiny teeth. Therefor there is plenty of room in there for everyone.

10:18 PM
@MikeWalsh so far the most uncomfortable part was the IV port. getting jammed in the vein doesn't feel so good
@Kin ... are you around?
well this is pretty awesome
surprised denver is that low

@swasheck wow denver is higher than phoenix

@bluefeet i think it must just be flight delays and not the "baggage wait time." that's miserable here

@swasheck Yeah IV starts don't always feel that great. Especially if you have someone not good at it. That part of EMT-I and Paramedic class sucked.. Letting your classmates stick you..

Just watched Elysium. usual crap action nonsense. Waste of time :/

@MikeWalsh odd. i went through those classes and was never stuck by a classmate
@Phil thanks for the review

10:32 PM
@swasheck Really? That's standard here in NH (NREMT state) for classes at the Intermediate (well AEMT now, I guess, let my ticket expire when life got busy and family grew) and Medic (though thankfully most students in medic classes are I's first)... Always had to practice IV starts on one another.

@MikeWalsh i did mine in florida ... but if it's NR then you'd suspect it would be somewhat of a standard.
but florida stinks at just about everything so i wouldnt doubt that they somehow messed it up

@swasheck yeah. Though it may just be a way that NH likes to have their educators do the training. Actually makes sense to have the first starts be on suspecting classmates instead of unsuspecting patients having to experience a student.. It's been awhile since I've seen or smelled the back of an ambulance, but I still get annoyed when I am a party to a bad IV starter..
You know right away when they start slapping your arm like crazy and asking you to pump a bunch of times.. Especially when I'm giving blood and you can see my AC from across the room ;-)

@MikeWalsh yes. it's really pretty annoying when they do that. the girl in the oral surgeon's office was particularly horrid.

@swasheck Nothing like getting the bruise from a routine visit ;-)
you still play with prehospital medicine? Or was this from a past life for you as well, @swasheck ?

@MikeWalsh past life.
@MikeWalsh i wanted to be a smoke jumper/hotshot which is odd considering my fear of flight.
and i got kicked out of university for not attending (but also not withdrawing) because i was in some EE program that i hated.

10:43 PM
@swasheck :-) I miss it.. Once the mortgage is paid off, I'm going to start from scratch and get my licenses again and do it part time.. Miss it a lot. (Well.. not all of the calls.. I miss the fun traumas, the interesting medicals, cutting people out of cars, doing interior attack at a fire, etc... I don't miss the stubbed toe wanting a free ride to city)
or the "I've been constipated for two days and I want an ambulance ride, and I don't care about getting back because the hospital pays for a taxi for me and I don't pay for the ride, and you can't refuse me so take me now" kind of calls. I don't miss those :)
@swasheck :-)

so i met this girl who wanted me to go back to school. so i went back to fire stuff ... went through medic school and wanted to go through fire school
but when i started doing well we had "the marriage talk." i decided i liked her more than the adventure so i ended up with a molec. bio degree

Kin
@swasheck yep .. whats up

@MikeWalsh i had a lot of fun experiences. and a lot of bad ones. the "lizard farm" was an awful place to go. i got to witness a really nasty crime scene (slashed throats with the body still reacting to a PCP OD). i got to tube someone in a five-alarm fire.
@Kin how's your performance issue going?

@swasheck That'll do it. My town is an all Volly town, safe for a day time crew of two. Priorities changed when the kids started coming out and getting older and I realized I was missing too much time with them.. Will go back later to it, though. :)

Kin
10:47 PM
@swasheck Opened a case with Microsoft .. Once I get more details .. I will post it ..

@MikeWalsh i've got such a diversity of interests that i dont know what i'd ever do "for sure"
@Kin nice.

@swasheck Yeah never saw a PCP OD, wouldn't like that.. Pushed the Protocol Narcan once to a guy out of it on Heroin.. That was the last time I gave that much Narcan to someone ;-) Still nothing compared to a PCP OD I imagine

Kin
@swasheck your pointer/suggestion was a huge help .. thanks again for that !

@swasheck Same here :-) There's that and for me there's the "What does HE want me to do?" question under it all also ;-)

@MikeWalsh looked like he was still alive. it was actually 100% head to convince me he was dead. the gut reaction was "holy crap he's still alive!!!! and moving for the knife!!!" in my hospital rounds i got to do the Narcan. that was fun. and then there was a guy saying that he was vomiting blood so he couldnt go to work. boss told him to go to hospital and provide the bill. so we tubed him. it was "payback" because NG tubes are AWFUL
@MikeWalsh i wrestled with that for about 3 years
@Kin no problem. i am just interested in hearing the resolution because it could go a long way in resolving some of my issues

10:51 PM
@swasheck yeah never played with NG.. Actually left Medic school in the middle. Realized that family was way too far down on my list of priorities.. And had a bad call with a local idiot on the whacker squad.. Almost broke a Pts neck.. Had to write it up..
@swasheck and realized that "If I get my medic.. I'll be the highest license in this region.. and if I stay volly and work IT, I'm responsible for these people... And if I quit IT and do this full time, we'll be moving out of our house or I'll never see home from the OT"

@MikeWalsh oh man.
@MikeWalsh i think that if i ever do anything other than IT it'll end up being academia ... but not in this country

@swasheck I'm too dumb to work in Academia.. I can fix bad queries, and I can fix people.. That's just plumbing and wiring, and memorization ;-)

@MikeWalsh nah. academia is a facade of intellect - at least in the US. academia is more about how much $$ you can bring to the institution by playing the game. i envision more of an eastern european/turkey sort of academia

@MikeWalsh Some academics are pretty bright, but it's a much more political racket these days.

hat tip to @ThomasStringer for the module_end
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells here in the US there are some pretty high-profile academics who are taking their grants and going home

10:57 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Agreed.
@swasheck Agreed
:)

@swasheck I'd almost be tempted to say the U.S. is a poster child for social democracy.

Kin
@MikeWalsh Reading your awesome answers .. makes me wonder .. You really have answers ready before the OP asks ... Excellent stuff !

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells only just now reading about it ... can you help me understand the connection to the academy?

@Kin ha. my wife calls me a "blow hard" and "motor mouth" combine that with my quick typing.. And there you go :-)

@swasheck Too much requirement to panhandle for funding.

11:01 PM
@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells ah. that helps. and you're right
@MikeWalsh are you the talker of the family?

@swasheck Yes. So is my daughter.. She is just like me.. But my wife is the primary teacher (yes.. I sleep with my kids' teacher)

UOC (my alma mater) had a large endowment called the Erskine Fund. It was one of the most academic of the universities in New Zealand, precisely because they could stay in their ivory tower to some extent.

@swasheck So when she talks, it's more useful than when I talk.

@MikeWalsh well hopefully they're getting good grades, then
@MikeWalsh more immediately useful. the utility of your conversation is your presence.

They got away with some nice techniques to separate the men from the boys. My favourite was teaching functional programming at Stage 1 and requiring a pass in that course as a pre-requisite to get into Stage 2 computer science.

11:03 PM
@swasheck They're doing alright. :-) But their teacher sleeps with the superintendent.

The course (COSC122) used to be quite notorious in New Zealand. It was harder than all but two of the Stage 2 papers.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells nice. sometimes the ivory tower isnt all that bad if used properly
@MikeWalsh NH sounds like a crazy place to live :)

@Zane I'm not seeing that; what is "your crappy browser"? Anyone else seeing an error message on sqlperformance.com ?

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells Functional programming is fun. Unfortunately I was never able to get it to do anything practical

@swasheck Eventually they sold out and taught Java in Stage 1 but they they went to Python for COSC121. I still think they should go back to Haskell for COSC122.

11:04 PM
@swasheck :-)

@AaronBertrand he uses IE7 which i think is supported by about nobody

@SimonRigharts It's a really good way to separate out the wannabees at Stage 1 before they can waste too many people's time.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells java is a 4-letter word

@swasheck I like that.
@swasheck Eventually they sold out and taught Java in Stage 1 but then they went to Python for COSC121. I still think they should go back to Haskell for COSC122.

@Zane and are you seeing this on the page or in the javascript console or elsewhere? Do you have any add-ins/plug-ins enabled? Unfortunately I don't have a single Windows VM where I can install IE7 to test.

@AaronBertrand Everything loads fine ... you are good sqlsentry folks !

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells i like python
@AaronBertrand i have no problems

@SimonRigharts You see it a bit in the city. Algorithmic trading types use it because you can do correctness proofs before you deploy it. Helps not to have bugs in your algo trading systems lest they place buy orders for the entire LSE.
@swasheck I like it too. It's one of my go-to languages for hacking up utilities to do this and that.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells i can't find anything more useful for Q&D one-offs (with apologies to powershell)

@swasheck You can do application development in it - there are quite a few web frameworks (Django etc.) for it, and there are mature bindings for most GUI toolkits like QT.

i also like Go quite a bit, but it's not a Q&D language

I've used IronPython as an embedded scripting language for .Net programs a few times. It's quite a bit easier to embed than Powershell.

@ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells oh sure ... i'm just saying that my personal affinity for it is how easy it is to pick up and just get it to do something useful

@swasheck It's very good at that. Another thing it's quite good for is frigging with COM or .Net APIs. You can run up an interactive shell and use it to query the API.

Holy chameleon question. I've reached my limit on charitable contributions here.

@Phil for the record I thought cuntsultancy was hilarious, but I don't know what the context was, so if it was demeaning that wasn't right, but if it was just taking the piss I would've laughed my ass off.

@jcolebrand I wrote "The Heap™ - C*n*sultancy ©®"
After @FreshPrinceOfSO had been naughty again

@Phil you'll notice I knew that already and put what you wrote in my comment :p
I just didn't look to see why you said it

@jcolebrand we were joking about how we are all jerks
