@MarkStorey-Smith He hadn't at the time I posted, Bob added his reply shortly after.

@SQLKiwi Nice chap Bob. Had an email conversation about SSDT with him on Joe Sacks suggestion (after discussing it at IE2 in London). Good bunch all round the SqlSkills crowd.

@MarkStorey-Smith Agreed. I have only met Paul and Kimberley in person though.

@MarkStorey-Smith that they toss up a bunch of foundational stuff for free is pretty nice
@SQLKiwi do you like blues?

@swasheck Music-wise? Not especially.

@SQLKiwi fair enough. it's not for everyone

12:08 AM
Hey is it true new users cannot add images to their questions?
@swasheck I did go to hear some live once and it was a very good evening, I just don't listen to it at home.

@SQLKiwi Might be a 50/100 rep thing. I was just looking at that Q and wasn't sure what to put in a comment. It's duped from SO where he's left an odd answer to his own question.

@SQLKiwi this guy is a former coworker (actually he was my boss). super guy and a talented musician. but he lives in dunedin and i dont follow him much so i dont know how often he hits the northernland.

@SQLKiwi You need at least 10 rep to post images

@TimStone How do you do that? :)

@TimStone ... SE Ninja
Stone. @TimStone.

12:12 AM
^ That helps :P

@TimStone That and a Minority Report style monitor array?

@MarkStorey-Smith I updated the question to include the image, not sure what should happen to the Q though.

@MarkStorey-Smith Exactly. Then there's always this:
in Tavern on the Meta on Meta Stack Overflow Chat, 10 hours ago, by Tim Stone
> You must have a massive headache, I can't imagine what this does to the MSO feed that goes direct into your brain!

@TimStone Thanks!

12:14 AM
what we're missing is that @TimStone == chat.stackexchange

It's true, secretly I'm just a self-aware AI.

he knows what happens on chat because he is chat

@TimStone lies ...
AI can't imbibe alcohol
or go to trade shows

Fair point.

@TimStone that's like less than 20 ... that's not enough, obviously

12:21 AM
That's only part of the right-hand window.

I know

I think I got bored and dropped out of some rooms at some point. :P

I love refactoring to make things easier

Ooo that multilingual question disappeared already

Suggest we VTC this one. OP asked the Q twice on SO, got an answer on the one still there (in comments) and then this one was migrated to us. He's not coming back.

@MarkStorey-Smith The best solution to resolve a blocking issue is always to export the data, drop the database, then recreate. OP is happy. Sigh.
3

@SQLKiwi Well, the blocks will definitely be gone, for now :)
The tone of that Eugene numpty makes me want @ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells proposed "Internet Punching Machine" to hurry into existence.
I wonder how many times he's gone through the export/rebuild process as the solution to an open tran. And I wonder who was daft enough to be paying him at the time.

1:40 AM
He missed a classic opportunity to say "I was wrong", learn something, and move on.

1:54 AM
Classic case of covering the symptom instead of solving the problem
@MarkStorey-Smith i'd vote but i cant so vote away

Now seeing "The default behavior for UNION is that duplicate rows are removed from the result." comes as quite a suprise to me - thank goodness I never use UNION in production software ... corrected the correction. — Eugen Rieck Jan 5 at 14:07

@ypercube Ha! And..."I never use UNION in production software" - amazing!
Oh my goshness:

As I said. This happens quite regularily with MSSQL2005, I have seen this lots of times. — Eugen Rieck Dec 6 at 9:43
Isn't DB corruption a rare case? I haven't seen any in quite a few years (including badly designed DBs on SQL Server as wll)

@dezso Only encountered it once myself.

Q: DELETE vs TRUNCATE

Great answer here by @SQLKiwi - Is this canonical? I think it is. Anyone agree? If so, should we add it to the list of canonical questions to the Q for Canonical questions in Meta? Should we start searching for dupes to close?

@MikeWalsh Hard to say it's canonical, there's so much to say about these two things, I doubt one answer will ever cover it all. The other answers linked in comments to the question are examples.

@SQLKiwi I think you expand this answer to discuss some of those items. I also think that the practical list of things to say wouldn't be so exhaustive to cover in one answer. I could see a canonical answer for this question to refer folks to when they ask again that would be practical, but that's just me

Down-vote this poor question or close? Too localized? Looking for opinions.

@SQLKiwi I wasn't sure what to do with it i.e. close as dupe of the Q I linked or to blast it. I'd only had 2 hours sleep when I commented so thought I best return to it when I had a clearer head :)

@MarkStorey-Smith I think I'll just down-vote it for now and see if it pops up in the close votes queue :) #CopOut

I downvoted.. But now I'd like to vote to close.
Apologies.. I actually ALREADY flagged to close for too localized apparently

Q: Progressing from a junior DBA position

A: How to delete database (DatabaseName(Single User)) in SQL Server 2008

Mike WalshIF you are just going to drop a database, you don't necessarily want to go to multi_user, you want to make sure that you are the only one accessing the database. Seeing the error message Swani got and the fact that the DB was in single_user mode tells me that it was attempted to be set to single_...

Should I have had coffee before that answer? I may need coffe before I can re-read it.. That middle paragraph where I kept talking about single_user and multi_user gave me a slight headache
I mean I know what I mean. But does it make sense to someone else how it reads?

@MikeWalsh Certainly scope for improvement, clarity-wise. It does ramble about a bit. Sorry.

@SQLKiwi Yeah it does :-) No need to apologize.. I'll wake up an edit it here in a bit. Problem was he probably went to single user mode to do the drop but was connected in object explorer or a query window.. So he actually needs to go back to multi user and from there go to single user and drop it

12:28 PM
Usually Object Explorer, yes

@SQLKiwi I just edited it
yeah.. he probably selected single user and either had a query window open or had the DB selected in object browser.. If I had a nickel for everytime I've done that...
I think that made it clear without that going back and forth on single and multi in one paragraph ;-)
Probably won't ever get picked up again anyway since it migrated from SO ;-)

I have yet to get to the point where I am terribly concerned about my rep. At the moment I'm just hoping to learn and occasionally be helpful.

@Zane Same here ultimately. I mean it's neat to see it going up when it does ;-) and I'd like to have one more privilege with voting to close.. But I like helping.. Learning from reading other's answers and learning from researching questions.

@MikeWalsh Don't mean to sound like I was knocking point hunting we all love to see that number go up. I just see people like @SQLKiwi saying things like I hit my point cap and I'm thinking more along the lines of I sure hope my comments were relevant lol.

I'd answer but I'm not sure as to the mysql syntax

@dezso New users can't comment

@SQLKiwi oc, but mods can turn answers into comments

@dezso I've had to do that before I had to points to comment.

@Zane Perhaps, no need to add that as an answer though I don't think ;c)
@dezso Ah I didn't realize that's what you were asking @JNK to do

2:13 PM
@SQLKiwi I just posted it at the same time as @bluefeet I should probably just drop mine.

@dezso FWIW it seems like an answer to me

@SQLKiwi as I wasn't :) I feel it like a comment, but I know nothing about the topic - and, coincidentally, it's @JNK's question

#sqlhelp needed on an MDX question to find relative rank of the current member w/o specifying the groupers in advance http://bit.ly/VDZpyh

@bluefeet do you think I should drop mine or keep it up as it is a slightly different way to do the same thing??

Just to add context

I don't think I wanted attention on that

@Zane they are different so leave it

@JNK Why not?

JNK
it's kind of a crap question I think that just shows my ignorance of MDX
but it seems like there SHOULD be a way to do this
If I get get a sum at the level of the group that I am at now, why can't I see the rank of a certain measure within that same group

@JNK Did you try waving it under @ConcernedOfTunbridgeWells nose?

@bluefeet will do just making sure.

JNK
2:22 PM
@MarkStorey-Smith of course!

@JNK Nothing wrong with that. It seemed like a good question to me, that had been unanswered for a couple of months. Almost set a bounty on it, but I know a few MDX people watch #sqlhelp so went there first.

JNK
I think I asked him and Cade as well

I had to star that

@SQLKiwi That'll get him on task! :)
I'm about to start meddling with DAX and note we haven't seen a single question on it yet

@JNK it's been a while since I've had to write MDX it's very irritating to write for.

JNK
2:26 PM
@MarkStorey-Smith I'd be interested to learn more about it

@SQL_Kiwi Done. The short answer is likely to be "with a big CASE statement detecting what level you're at" if I understood the Q

@JNK There's quite alot of good material about under the Powerpivot banner. powerpivotpro.com and projectbotticelli.com are good starters
TechEd videos on channel9 are quite useful for a speed through features also

@ypercube best question ever. Made me feel really good about the databases I work with.

What do we do about this (frequent) issue:
OP posts at SO, someone advises him to post here:
If you don't get a useful answer here, asking at dba.stackexchange.com might help. — MvG 3 hours ago
and then we have 2 questions, one at SO, one at DBA
Sometimes, this happens without any advice. But for this one, we can't blame the OP. He is just following instructions.

JNK
Correct the comment
"Actually leave it here, we can migrate it as is!"
what will happen is we will delete the new one
and move the old one anyways
its not a huge deal in my mind because it's very easy to fix

@JNK: I know that one of the two should be closed or migrated but I see this often.

@swasheck Aaron is I suspect being light-hearted. Backup/restore is most definitely not what is intended to be done with a LocalDB

@MarkStorey-Smith ah. well, i am completely in the dark when it comes to LocalDB so I have no idea. it sounds like a swell tool for the devs here. i currently support their dev, test, and stage environments too ... cutting out dev sounds fantastic

@swasheck Its the underpinning for Sql Server Development Tools (SSDT)
Bleary eyed and incoherent at the moment, I'll come back with an answer tomorrow morning if it hasn't been done.
But its a perfectly valid question

@swasheck Not at all. It's a sensible question that deserves a proper answer, not a snarky comment.

@SQLKiwi my online relationship with aaron is such that i dont misinterpret him. i like the guy quite a bit so i wasnt offended.

@swasheck If the database was developed with SSDT, you would just publish it to a different target. Also, detach/attach works - LocalDB creates mdf/ldf just like Express
@swasheck Not saying you should be, just that the question deserves a proper answer

@SQLKiwi That sounds like an answer.

@SQLKiwi i just remember the terrible issues with user instances and trying to promote one of them to production was terrible because the dev would lose track of which instance they were actually trying to promote. there are also quite a few questions on SO with this same sort of problem. didn't know if localdb was an improvement over this.

@JNK I know.
@swasheck That sounds like an edit to your question.
Do you mean other than backup / restore and change your connection string? — Aaron Bertrand 18 mins ago
My problem with comments like that is it dissuades people from leaving a proper answer.

@SQLKiwi My thoughts precisely, so I dropped a comment in.

"Do you mean other than doing <obvious x you n00b>"
@MarkStorey-Smith I typed one but thought better of it at the last moment.

@SQLKiwi edits have been made

@MarkStorey-Smith Looking forward to reading it - I haven't done much with LocalDB myself, so it could be informative.

@MarkStorey-Smith when you return with your answer i'm sure i will have more follow-up questions :)

@swasheck Thanks. In the meantime, check out Aaron's introduction to LocalDb

@swasheck @SQLKiwi I'm no expert on SSDT but I've been using it to tame a particularly unwealdy database (and team) for a few months. Its helping.

@MarkStorey-Smith Sounds perfect.
I'm slowly getting the hang of using SSDT locally (just for SQLCLR stuff so far)

@SQLKiwi connect only through named pipe, right?
