A: What is Balkan bread?

Wad CheberIt's almost certainly a type of pogacha, or possibly kruh. Originally, "pogacha" basically meant "bread baked on a hearth", or in other words, "bread" (when the word was invented, almost all bread was baked on a hearth). Thus, there are as many different kinds of pogacha as there are of bread. ...

6 hours later…
6:38 AM
@jolenealaska and back. It's that simple :P

7:04 AM
@Jay I know you didn't ask me, but I'm totally with rumi and jojo as far as the beads go.
And how old is the cousing you are getting Fallout 4 for?

7:43 AM
@Stephie morning

@ElendilTheTall Morning!
Any snow yet?

Not a drop
We don't get it nearly as much as you do
Every other year usually, even with the crazy weather these days
High ground only, for the most part

So muddy and grey all winter?

Mixed with bright and frosty
My favourite

I have currently two kids thawing near the fire. Woke up around six with a loud "Schnee!!!!!".
I don't need snow if I get enough light.

7:59 AM
What does schnee signify?

Snow!!!

Oh. Do you know, I genuinely had no idea what the German for snow was. Weird.
Now that I think of it I don't know any weather terms I think.
Other than donner and blitzen

8:12 AM
An odd gap I will have to rectify

Oh, what do you need?

Many moons ago I heard a French word meaning 'the rain that falls out of clear sunny sky'. It was beautiful, but I'm damned if I can remember it
As for German, well
I now have schnee
Rain... Regen?
Sunny I imagine will be sonnig?

I think weather terms (apart from the obvious rain or snow) aren't part of the basic stuff one does in school. Yup, Regen and sonnig.

Kalt and heiss

Fog is Nebel and therefore foggy is neblig.

8:15 AM
Windy?

windig
or, if more, stürmisch

I was just typing that :)

Great minds and all that...

Great minds with commonly sourced languages
Frosty?

frostig

8:16 AM
It can't be frostig surely?
Oh jeez

hard to pronounce: schwül. (hot and damp)
(Don't confuse with schwul, which is gay - in the Jay-sense.)

I can manage that
A fuller u sound
Well, you know doubt know all the English weather terms, but I can teach you a Scots one if you like

Ah, word of the day? Yes, please!

Dreich - cold, wet, windy and generally miserable
In terms of pronunciation it would be more like driech for you

That could come handy in the next weeks...
(hopefully not)

8:22 AM
A very cold day is described as fleeing
'it's fleeing out there'

As in "running away"?

Yes, but not in that sense

Sure, but I have to link it somewhere in my mnemonic neural nework.

Yes.
Oh. Mrs the Tall says don't forget blin-smoor

???

8:25 AM
Snow drift. Lovely word in the accent.
She's seen more them than I have. Here the news channels go mad if we get 3 inches of snow. Where she's from that's a dusting.

As in "snow that is currently blown around" or "snow that was and is now forming something akin to dunes"?

The latter
'ma hoos was unner a blin-smoor!'

Schneewehen. Beautiful.

Oh, that is nice

Or , more dialect, Schneewechten (Southern German).

8:31 AM
Hmm. I prefer the first one. More mellifluous
I imagine schwül has the same root as swelter

I know - Swabian can sound harsh. But for me it's the language of my childhood and so very comforting. Some things can only be said in dialect.
@ElendilTheTall makes sense.
Have to go - minor 2 needs me.

Okey dokey, see you later.
May your schneewechtens be small and shortlived.

Best regards to Mrs the Tall and thanks for the word!

Nae bother hen
Oh, you need some English slang as well: baltic, very cold. "it's fucking baltic out there!"

user116848
9:20 AM
Nice. Vocabulary discussions. I love the topics you guys discuss here.

user116848
And Good afternoon!

user116848
9:45 AM
@Jolenealaska In my school here they made us recite national anthem every single day before entering our classes <rolls eyes>

user116848
I always found that a bit schmaltz. At least to me.

user116848
@ElendilTheTall Your writing skills are very good. I bet if you wrote a novel etc. it could sell volumes.

9:59 AM
@Arrowfar thank you. Not sure what you're basing that on, but thank you nonetheless

user116848
I'm basing that on your writing style here in chat.

user116848
Well, reddit has some similar writers too haha.

user116848
Btw while reading reddit I get confused sometimes. I mean how do we know who is replying to who in long threads?

user116848
It says "parent" but that makes no sense to me. It shows the first poster only.

user116848
So we just use our intuition? Sometimes there are zillions of comments after comments and it gets difficult to distinguish between an answer and a comment.

user116848
10:14 AM
Joke answers are pretty funny there.

1:05 PM

1:18 PM
@Jolenealaska Ouch!

I have had days like that

Haven't we all...
Btw, did the Yorkie spend the night?

Nope, he was so contrite that I decided against it. I have him from the 24th through the 30th, so I'll work with him more then.
I'm going to go back to bed for a while. Cya in a bit.

Sleep tight!

2:21 PM
@Stephie how's the schnee?

1 hour later…
3:31 PM
@ElendilTheTall mostly gone. According to an old family superstition we expect ice and snow next weekend.

3 hours later…
user116848
6:05 PM
Yo Yo Yo. I got a new avatar.

user116848
Well it has been a month since I last changed my avatar.

6:27 PM
@Arrowfar How often can that be changed?

user116848
6:41 PM
@FaheemMitha Anytime you want.

user116848
But "names" can only be changed once a month I hear.

7:11 PM
@Arrowfar ok

@Arrowfar that is deeply cheesy :)

user116848
heh

@Arrowfar Please don't go fishing for compliments - you might end up with an old boot in this case...

user116848
@Stephie Whoa that bad huh?

Let's put it this: I am with @ElendilTheTall on this one...

7:16 PM
@Arrowfar I think your icon is an improvement on the other ones you've used. You seem to change them quite a lot.

But as I already said - who am I to talk about avatars.

user116848
@Stephie <feels sad>

Any reason why?
@Arrowfar Be of good cheer.

@Arrowfar There, there! You can choose whatever you like and I have seen far worse.

user116848
@FaheemMitha I just like to change them, no reason. I get bored by looking at the same me all the time I guess ;)

user116848
7:18 PM
@Stephie hehe. Nooo!

@Arrowfar Fair enough. Nothing wrong with a little variety.

user116848
See? At least we started a fun conversation here. This room was very quiet for a while.

Is that icon supposed to represent an angel?

user116848
Yeah it is an angel.

user116848
Angel on fire.

7:22 PM
Any special meaning?

@Arrowfar I think your bar for fun conversations is extremely low. Is Pakistan really so boring? :-)
@Arrowfar Poor angel.

user116848
@Stephie Nah. I search Google images from time to time and when I see a good pic I use it as an avatar.

Well, everyone needs a hobby.

user116848
Hey what does that mean? :)

user116848
@FaheemMitha Yeah Pakistan is pretty boring.

7:24 PM
@Arrowfar Faheem, channeling Tall...

@Arrowfar Well, that's too bad. I would suggest you go dancing, but since it's Pakistan, they'd probably throw you in prison.
@Arrowfar Mild snarkiness. Not intended to offend.

user116848
@Stephie Yeah you guys are good at pulling legs :)

user116848
@FaheemMitha I'm not the dancing type anyway.

@Arrowfar I'm usually very well behaved. Sorry about that.
@Arrowfar You never know till you try.

user116848
@FaheemMitha Oh, not at all. You guys are awesome.

7:29 PM
And personally I think not liking dancing is like not liking chocolate. It's not possible.

user116848
Yeah you are right I guess. I think it is like alcohol. I mean here almost no one tastes a drop of wine/beer etc. from a young age so we have no idea what it tastes like and how fun it is to drink wine/beer etc. Same goes for dancing I bet.

user116848
I hope my analogy is correct.

user116848
I like to go to run though. It is fun.

user116848
Btw here outside life sucks. Unless we specifically go for camping etc.

@Arrowfar It might be, but you won't find out till you try.
Stephie dances. Ask her what she thinks.

user116848
7:36 PM
Ah, I see.

I'm certainly biased.

@Arrowfar I used to run once. Not any longer. I never thought it was fun, though. I used to run in Cambridge. That was a good place for running. Nice scenery. Quiet. Clean air. Not much vehicular traffic.
I used to run to that village and back. Now, what was its name? It's been a while.

user116848
@FaheemMitha Nice.

I still remember that strange smell those fields has.
@Arrowfar Yes, it was.

7:52 PM
hi guys

user116848
Hi Jojo!

Hi @Jolenealaska!

I see above that you were talking about dancing. I love to dance, but I am the worst at it in the world.
I still laugh when I think about the big dance scene in West Side Story.

Who cares? You need to dance first and foremost for yourself!

Unless you are trying to do it on stage

7:55 PM
Ummmm,... <vague memories stashed away somewhere>

The choreographer kept moving me back inch by inch, until finally I was behind the rear curtain.
That's alright. Anybody's didn't need to be in that scene anyway.

No! How mean!

I really am that bad.

A good trainer can make even bad somewhat presentable - even if he needs to think outside the box.
You don't give up on difficult cases either, right?

actually he kind of did. I spent that scene spying on it from a scaffold that was a part of the set. it worked pretty well, and I wanted that role because it was a fun role to act.

8:05 PM
What were you up to this weekend?

As it was, we had a number of very talented dancers in that cast. it didn't break my heart at all to not dance in the scene.
not much. I slept most of the day yesterday.

user116848
@FaheemMitha I used to watch this show for fun in the past: So You Think You Can Dance.

user116848
So You Think You Can Dance is an American televised dance competition show that airs on Fox in the United States and is the flagship series of the international So You Think You Can Dance television franchise. The series premiered on July 20, 2005 with over ten million viewers and ended the summer season as the top-rated show on television. SYTYCD was created by American Idol producers Simon Fuller and Nigel Lythgoe and is produced by 19 Entertainment and Dick Clark Productions. The first season was hosted by current American news personality Lauren Sánchez. Since the second season, it has been...

I've got the little Yorkie that bit me for a week starting Tuesday night. Between now and then I'm battening my hatches.

What are you going to do with him? Just the biting or a full-blown boot camp?

8:08 PM
@Arrowfar Those Hollywood shows are generally not good.

user116848
@Jolenealaska Oh I'm sorry to hear that. Are you okay?

user116848
@FaheemMitha Yeah it is not Indian. I have watched plenty of Indian films though. Dancing is pretty good.

@Arrowfar What does India have to do with it?

@Stephie he's seven years old and his basic obedience is actually pretty good (sit, down, stay etc.) so while will use the obedience as a tool, the biting is the main event.
A week is just long enough to get him to think that mom is not going to save him.

user116848
@FaheemMitha I meant dancing is not of the Indian style in the show. So many people who are into Indian style of dancing may not like it.

8:12 PM
@Arrowfar I'm fine, he's just a little 14 pound dog so there's only so much damage he could do. He tried though, a remarkably full mouth bite out of nowhere.

@Jolenealaska More a "spoiled rotten" or a "terrier character" thing? And it's not only about the jacket but about his "I don't want to so I bite" attitude, right?

@Arrowfar I was not aware there was such a thing as Indian style of dancing.
My point was simply that the people who run the show don't care about dancing. And it shows.

user116848
ah

user116848
Well I dunno :)

user116848
@Jolenealaska That sucks!

8:15 PM
@Arrowfar You mean what usually goes by "Bollywood Dance"?

user116848
@Stephie Yeah that exactly :)

"I don't want to so I'll bite" is exactly it. So it is a little bit spoiled rotten and a little bit of terrier character thing. What he doesn't understand is that I can kill him with my bare hands. His teeth are an annoyance, and I don't like bleeding on my carpet, but I've got way bigger guns than he does.
Since I am in control of every single good thing he gets during that week, he will get those good things (like food and affection) when I have pushed the issue and he has chosen to restrain himself and be a gentleman. At the first sign of aggression he gets throttled and locked in a dark bathroom. rinse and repeat

@Jolenealaska But that massive overestimation of it's own abilities seems so "little dog" to me. There was this one that had to get stitches almost weekly because he wouldn't stop pestering really large dogs. Once he was grabbed by one, shook like a wet rag (or a rabbit) and thrown aside. Off to the vet again. Repeat performance a week later with the same opponent.

it's the week later that's the key in that scenario.

Short memory?

8:23 PM
We will address the issue every hour or so. Yes, dog memories of individual events are short. It is through rapid fire repetition that they start to get it. If they do the same thing they get same result.
I know that the jacket is a trigger, so is bugging him when he's warm and comfy. I've given the owner some homework thinking of every other trigger she has seen.
Unfortunately, instead of dealing with the issue head-on, she has told people to keep their distance for their safety. That is a Catch-22 that makes it worse.

You'd have thought that at some point self-preservation would kick in, but that one must have had a death-wish. Whatever, when we get a dog one day it will be a reasonably large breed.

We will be using a muzzle and I will also use Kelvar gloves when he is not wearing the muzzle.

Hello @Jolenealaska
Does the following paragraph make sense to you?
> Necessary investigations into evaluation of the status of other countries universities to develop cooperation plans with them in line with internationalization policy

Hi @Gigili. Have you had luck with the Dulce de Leche?
No, the paragraph is gobbledygook.
after reading it three or four times, I'm still not 100% sure what it says

@Gigili Incomplete sentence. And unclear at that.

8:30 PM
I assume that is the subject of a larger sentence. That alone is a bit mind-boggling

@Jolenealaska I put it in the oven for an hour, still not entirely satisfied with the result! I must try the Pressure Cooker method
@Jolenealaska hmm. what's wrong with it?

after simmering it unopened for three hours?

@Jolenealaska Yes
@Jolenealaska How about this one:
> The investigations required to evaluate the status of other countries' universities in order to develop the cooperation plans in accordance with internationalization policies of the university

Again, that is a sentence fragment. But the biggest problem is that there are lots of big words strung together in a way that doesn't really make sense.

@FaheemMitha Yeah, the original text is an incomplete sentence as well

8:37 PM
How about giving us some context. I think if I were editing that line, I would first try to eliminate syllables.

@Gigili You haven't said whether you wrote this sentence, or someone else did.

@Jolenealaska Well, I wish I could. An incomplete sentence like that is all I am given.
@FaheemMitha You didn't ask.

@Gigili Ok. Well, which is it?

@Gigili In that case, I would try another brand of sweetened condensed milk.

Gosh, what a busy Sunday night.

user116848
8:39 PM
@Gigili I studied in an English school still my English is okayish. How is the standard of English in schools there? I thought I'd ask.

user116848
@ElendilTheTall Yep.

user116848
You seem quiet though.

@Jolenealaska I guess it wouldn't be easy to find a different brand. But you are right, I should try another brand.
@FaheemMitha What difference does it make?

What are "internationalization policies"?

@Gigili Um...

8:43 PM
@Gigili try one that does not say "filled".
Eagle Brand and Carnation are both well-known brands in the US and I have had no problem using either of those to make Dulce de Leche.
It shouldn't make any difference that your milk is filled, that just means that some of the fat in the can is not milk-fat.

@Jolenealaska Policies that help the university develop international programs

But, if you boil an unopened can of sweetened condensed milk for three hours, you should get Dulce de Leche. Unless of course you are at very high-altitude. but I think you would have mentioned that by now.
And what are international programs? how are those programs different from just having students from different countries?

@Jolenealaska Well, it should not, but I doubt that is the case here.
@Arrowfar Well, it totally depends on the school.
@Jolenealaska I have no idea!

I think that pretty much sums up what's wrong with the sentence fragment. After reading that many syllables, you should have some idea what it says. I think I could read that many syllables of French and have a better idea what the line is about.

@Jolenealaska I still have to find out why my method yields a runny sauce instead of a creamy one.

8:52 PM
Well, there isn't a whole lot of gray area in "simmer the unopened can in water that more than covers the can for three hours"
If you have done that and have not achieved rich caramel, I have to assume that the contents of the can are the problem.

Right.
Thank you for your help anyway.

You can do it with fresh or evaporated milk too.

Q: Cajeta with powdered goat's milk? Or evaporated? (Experiment Results)

JolenealaskaI have fallen in love with Dulce de Leche, which I make by long boiling unopened cans of sweetened condensed milk. I've heard wonderful things about Cajeta, the same thing but made with goat's milk. I want to try it. Alas, sweetened condensed goat's milk doesn't seem to be something I can get ...

Interesting

Oooh, the Travel Channel is doing "Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern" out of Amsterdam.

What is "Bizarre" in Amsterdam? @Cerberus, any idea?

9:07 PM
Hi!
I have no idea: what is this about?

user116848
Hello @Cerberus How are you?

Good, and you?

user116848
I'm fine, thanks.

Good.

They opened with stuffed pork head, stuffed with the skin and brain of the animal, but other than that it seems pretty not bizarre so far.

9:16 PM
Oh, well, good night everyone!

Buenas noches!

Bye Stephie. Gute Nacht.

Is it cool in India as well?

@Cerberus Is the weather cool? Are you asking me?

Yes, and yes!
It's quite cold in Holland, a few degrees above freezing.
3 now.

9:22 PM
@Cerberus It's not really cool here. But less hot than it usually is. The is the beginning of the comparatively cool period.
For a brief period, it feels like a different place.

Cool.
What is the current day temperature?

@Cerberus Dunno. In F or C?

I think there is only one country that uses F, and neither of us lives there...
I'll look it up for Bombay.
That is rather hot still.
Interesting that Pakistan should be so much cooler now.
I also had no idea your sun rose and set so early.
Ours sets earlier, but it rises much later.
Hmm probably because we have daylight-saving time, and you don't?
Hmm no, that would work the other way around.

9:38 PM
@Cerberus Bombay is by the sea. Pakistan is inland.
The climate here is moderated somewhat by the sea.

And the sea makes your winters warmer?

user116848
@Cerberus Here:

user116848
Karachi has an arid climate, albeit a moderate version of this climate. Karachi is located on the coast and as a result has a relatively mild climate. Karachi has two main seasons; Summer & Winter, while spring and autumn are very short. Summer season persists for longest period during the year. The level of precipitation is low for most of the year. Less precipitation during summer is due to inversion layer. Karachi also receives the monsoon rains from July to September. The city enjoys a tropical climate encompassing mild winters and warm summers. The humidity levels usually remain high from...

@Cerberus A bit, probably. But I'm no weather expert. I know Pakistan gets colder in the winters.

user116848
In the north of Pakistan it gets very chilly though.

9:41 PM
@Arrowfar How cold is it where you are, right now?

user116848
Snowfall and all.

user116848
@FaheemMitha Like 18 C. And there?

That makes sense.

@Cerberus Since I spent much of my adult life in that country, I still think in F.
@Arrowfar There where?

@FaheemMitha Ah OK.

user116848
9:42 PM
@FaheemMitha Where you live.

@Arrowfar Low 30s high 20s, I suppose. But I don't really keep track.

Okay, so Arrowfar meant the night temperature.
A bit cooler than Bombay, but not much.

Yes, at night here it probably drops a bit.

user116848
@Cerberus Yeah exactly. I meant the night temperature. Like now.

I was meaning the day temperatures.

9:43 PM
Right.

During the night probably mid to high 20s, I would guess.

user116848
Btw Karachi is pretty close to ocean too.

user116848
We have Arabian Sea at a almost 20 minute drive from where I live.

I know!

@Arrowfar Oh, I didn't know that.
I could see the Arabian Sea from my home, if there weren't buildings in the way.

user116848
9:46 PM

user116848
@FaheemMitha Heh. Cool!

We're having a heat wave, we might get above freezing next week.

Impressive.

Although, that says it's got to 35F yesterday. Hmmm... I don't think it got that warm here.

Only a few degrees colder than here!

9:51 PM
Yep, it's right around freezing right now. That's downright balmy.

Hmm it shouldn't be?
But I suppose the town itself creates heat.

It has just hit freezing here. Crystal clear. Very bright moon.

It's usually a few degrees warmer inside a town or city.
Hmm clear is good.
Still rainy here.

It varies incredibly. We had one day in Chickaloon where 3pm one day he was fully 25C warmer than the day before (24 hours before). -40 one day, right at freezing the next

9:57 PM
Yes, I've heard that one :P

it was trippy
Fairbanks is way worse than Anchorage.

Yeah, fuck Fairbanks
Anchorage is where it's at

-40 is just normal cold/

We should all move there!

Let's go!

10:00 PM
But I imagine biking will be difficult.
OK!
What should I pack?

It gets that cold here, but it does not stay that cold.

Do you still have that bear costume?

what I have now is really warm wool coat!

If so, bring it. Then if push comes to shove, we can send cerb into the woods in the costume to lure it away

The costume didn't fit.
It had only one head.

10:02 PM
Ah
Well, jojo can pass for bigfoot what with the hair and... Big feet. She'll have to improvise.

Heh.
I'll be Cerberus.

That means you have to sleep in the kennel outside.

Together we'll play as a party of warriors in an RPG.
That's all right, I need no stinking human houses.

Jojo and I will be curled up in the lodge under our bearskins, fire roaring

We'll devour and/or stamp on whoever comes our way.
Well, well, well.

10:05 PM
You'll be out snapping the droolcicles off your muzzle
S

If the little shit bites me again, we can make a hat out of a Yorkie hide.

Hehe.
His behaviour has not improved?
Has he bitten you again?

No, I have not given him another opportunity to bite. On the 24th he will stay with me for a week.
I will give him all kinds of rope to hang himself then.

Ah, the Brown method

His behaviour has not improved?

10:12 PM
There's no way to really measure whether his behavior has improved because I haven't done anything to trigger a bite.

Now you wish you had one of those dual oven gloves

OK.

I will trigger him over and over and over again when he stays with me. I anticipate that he will try to bite me a few times the first couple of things. I actually have gloves for cooking that I will use. These would do no good with a bigger dog, but they will offer me just enough protection to get my hands right in there.

Failing that, hook a steak up to a car battery and let the little rat bite that

10:16 PM
Right. I'm going to turn in. It is getting late, and I have to get into my thermal onesie

Good night sweetie.
I'll see you later.

Here's hoping. Night all
