@FaheemMitha MY SCI-FI SENSE IS TINGLING

@Pureferret sci-fi? nobody says sci-fi.

@FaheemMitha I say it, and I'm a mod
therefore it's LAW

@Pureferret You're a mod? Congratulations.

This is all just me being flippant/sarrcastic etc

I'm guessing that is Judge Dredd. Or Sylvester Stallone. Whatever.

12:17 AM
@FaheemMitha It's a drawing
Of judge dredd

@Pureferret Yes, I can see that. Still looks like Dredd/Stallone.
@Pureferret Ok

Hi @Jolenealaska
Can i talk to you for a while?

Of course.

I have a question to be asked in Workplace forum.. can you just have review on it?
"I have noticed that many of our BAs and Tech leads disturb while talking someone. When someone talking, Suddenly another person is interrupts to that person, talking loud in between. Even though they are talking about a good opinion to the subject, I feel it's not polite. I'm junior in my workplace. But I never had a such a disturbance yet. Sooner I might have to face such a situation. How should I let them to know that is a low quality act? "
my subject heading is > "How to tell not to disturb when someone talking"

Do you mind if I edit (proofreading)?

yes!
I mean, you do correction of my english grammar

I'm going to take that to mean, yes, you don't mind :)
brb

8:53 AM
BA = Business Analyst

"I have noticed that many of our analysts and techs can be disruptive. When someone is talking, the tech may interrupt that person, speaking loudly. Even though they are speaking about the topic at hand, I feel that it's not polite. I'm junior in my workplace, but I am bothered by this. I might feel the need to deal with it soon. How should I let them know my feelings? "
My subject heading is > "How can I ask someone senior to me to “keep it down”?

wow! Thanks a lot

You're welcome.

rich english ! (which is what i deserve to have)

Well, I have been speaking it for 46 years :)

8:58 AM
hmm.. so, then there is no surprise

My Sinhala sucks, though.

hahaah... that is totally natural

Yes :)

Q: How can I ask someone senior to me to “keep it down”?

Crazy NinjaI have noticed that many of our analysts and techs can be disruptive. When someone is talking, the tech may interrupt that person, speaking loudly. Even though they are speaking about the topic at hand, I feel that it's not polite. I'm junior in my workplace, but I am bothered by this. I might ...

thanks for the vote :D

Who...me?
:)

9:17 AM
My question was actually, that happens in our meetings

You can add that with two words.
I have noticed that many of our analysts and techs can be disruptive in meetings.

i'll modify it

Note that "in" and "to" would both be correct (just an oddity of English that I noticed).
Hi Tall!

hmm...

You're late!

I've had a banner day with my book.

@ElendilTheTall Hello Sir!

I really like Dragon!
It has a much better spell-check than Firefox.

And it has already learned some of my "go to" phrases.
And Amazon tells me that my new printer will arrive on Friday.
Now if I could just get off my butt and get ready for my walk-through tomorrow, I would feel golden.
Instead, I am making bread (the last thing I need in this kitchen right now). A question on main piqued my curiosity.
1
Q: where can I buy a larger than usual 13X4x4 pull man pan?

Jennifer LiI want to make Italian style pain de mie bread for sandwich which is much larger size than the usual 13X4X4 pull man pan available on the market.... if you know where I can find a larger size baking pan for pain de mie , or other alternative to achieve this goal, plse adv.

9:44 AM
@Jolenealaska

Yes?

i got a comment :
flag

I think the question probably is not titled correctly for this. When you say "keep it down" I would get the impression that some colleagues are near your workstation talking loudly and that it is distracting to you. However, for the situation you describe, the interrupting part or "analysts talking over my colleagues" during a meeting is the problem you're trying address. – Brandin 1 min ago

He has a point, considering your correction of my interpretation.
Maybe, "How can I ask a senior to not interrupt?

that will raise this question 'When are you getting interrupt?'

I don't think so, that's covered in the text of the question.
The title doesn't need to completely cover it.

9:49 AM
"How can I ask a senior not to interrupt when someone is talking?"

That works.
Mention to the commenter that you appreciate his input and have edited accordingly.

always !

rum tee tum
coffeeeeee

I'm drinking coffee too. Probably not the best move at 2am.

9:56 AM
probably not
decaff is the key

WooHoo! King Arthur flour has added grams to their recipes!

Enlightenment finally reaches the New World

Wonders never cease.
Ounces are a royal PItA.

yes indeed
don't even start on fucking cups

Once I was pontificating to my nephews about calibrating scales.
"What do I have access to in this house that I know exactly what it weighs?"
Dad (the science minded guy) interjected, "A pint is a pound the world around".
Oh you're a big help.

10:08 AM
ooo
he's wrong again
British pints are bigger
1 Imperial pint = 1.2 US pints

Yep! Not to mention it's just a stupid system!

i learned, the other day, that the Egyptians used a base-12 number system
why, do you think?

Lunar cycles?

that's one thought, but I prefer the alternative - they counted the finger joints with their thumb

10:14 AM
one native american tribe had a base 8 system because they counted the gaps between fingers rather than the fingers themselves

Do you know how Chicken, Alaska got its name?

I think you've told me before...

They couldn't spell ptarmigan.

I love that bit of trivia.

10:24 AM
the Babylonians had a base 60 system, which is where 60 minutes/seconds comes from
it sounds crazy but it actually makes a lot of sense - 60 is divisible by 1,2,3,4,5,6,10,12,15,20 and 30

That makes my brain hurt.

lol, how?

Bread is rising! (way to be productive, Jolene)
That's more fingers and toes than I have.

60/1 = 60, 60/2 = 30, 60/3 = 20, 60/4 = 15, 60/5 = 12, 60/6 = 10, 6/10 = 6, 60/12 = 5, 60/15 = 4, 60/20 = 3, 60/30 = 2

I get that. It still makes my brain hurt.

10:28 AM
<pats jojo's brain>

Awesome recipe:

<wipes hand on jojo's shirt>

@Jolenealaska oops, I slipped

You're forgiven...this once!

10:31 AM
damn! slipped again!
woah, slipping all over the place

I find another way to prove that I don't have smoke damage from the fire.

you, or the apartment? :D

The sheet I put over my oven hood (to diffuse light) is clean.
That was just above the pan that burned.
I've never taken it down, and she probably remembers it from that night.
It's not so clean that it looks laundered, but the stains are food, not smoke.
More and more I'm feeling like I dodged a bullet.

yes, you loon, be more careful
what would I do at work all day if you burn half of Anchorage down?

Yes. USAA has given me a good quote on renter's insurance, too.
That would suck.
I hope the landlord is satisfied with 100K liability coverage.
(for $8/month if bundled with auto insurance)
That includes the future dog.
dammit....*found*

10:49 AM
?

That's it, I'm plugging in my mic.

ah
I thought you were just trying to sound exotic

That must be it.

it worked - I am now imagining you as a dusky Spanish señorita

:)
Well, this is unedited by hand. By golly, it works.
Remember that freebie?
This is bunches better.
It gets confused when I laugh at myself.

10:57 AM
how does it handle punctuation?
do you have to say 'period' 'comma' etc?

Maybe someday it will learn that that's normal for me.
I have to say it as in"period"
But it's very intuitive, or at least it is to me, because I grew up listening to my father dictate.
Still no editing.
Except the "period".
If I'm on a roll I can just speak and then edit it by hand.

it strikes me that there must be a way to differentiate between the word period and it adding a .

I will install it on my phone too, then I can just pace with the headset.
There is I'm sure but I just don't know it yet.
I'm just happy to be functionally literate.
It took me longer to learn how to answer my phone.
Slide to the right, not left.

yes. I would assume as a member of the right handed fascist world order that would have come naturally to you

Are you left-handed?

11:06 AM
I thought we'd established that long ago

Maybe we did, but I don't remember.
Still no hand editing.
I am so impressed.
This is so it's better than typing!

ha
how ironic

There is an error!!
First one!

does it recognise antidisestablishmentarianism?

Antidisestablishmentarianism
yep!
But it sucks at middle English and Shakespeare.
One that Opera the shoulder salt of the box of matzos pets to the rope done by the baby genius each quarter
Please say that again!
Nor I, I would not there reside to put my father in inpatient thoughts by being in his eye.
Holy shit!
It has learned iambic pentameter!
It couldn't do that earlier today.

11:13 AM
I'm pretty sure it doesn't work on rhythm

But how is it (nearly) correctly understanding the line now, but not before??
Weird!

how many whiskeys had you had before?

Snort
Do you recognize the fourth line?
After antidisestablishmentarianism?
That's its attempt at the Canterbury Tales in middle English.

I'm fairly sure there were no matzos in Chaucer

I was just thinking that.

11:17 AM
“No empty handed man can lure a bird. Oy vey!”

Oy vey!
It understood that!
Model talk that was supposed to be Moslem toff model top...
LOL
CC señorita
it can do the swirly mark! That's more than I can say!
CC needs some work.
Verboten
WOW!
This thing might be able to play Scrabble.
It even capitalized Scrabble.

verboten is widely used in english, as is señorita
si si, less so
:)

But even so, I have never spoken Spanish to it before.
Or German for that matter.
I can't believe how fast I'm able to type
This is just unreal
Just to think of all the time I have wasted trying to learn to type
I have a review to write on Amazon.
Or speak, actually.

i may have asked this before, but is your slow typing down to your MS, or have you never been able to do it?

It's too bad I'm coming off my manic high. I could have this book done by the end of the month!
Both
I took two years of typing in high school. I was pathetic.
But now it comes and goes as an MS symptom as well.
When I'm really on a roll I can probably type about 30 words a minute.
I can talk a lot faster that.
That's one of the reasons I was so hot to trot to automate everything when I was company Clerk.

11:29 AM
how odd
I wonder why that is

You have see me though when I can barely type a word.

MS is so bizarre
There is more we don't know than that we do.
While researching books that have already been written by MS patients, I came across a very highly reviewed book about diet.
It sucks because it makes everything like off-limits including gluten, but I'm going to try it for three months.
Just to see if I want to mention it in my book.

am I correct in thinking that MS is virtually unheard of in warm climates?

It is more common in temperate climates. Extremely hot or cold climates seem to have less MS.
Except Alaska, because people with MS have a way of moving here.
Heat exacerbates everything
It didn't even choke on exacerbates.

11:35 AM
jeez jojo, get over it. yes, voice recognition is very clever. you sound like an Amish. "Look father, a horseless carriage!"

The new feed item is funny.

It's choking again on my laughing

this is one smooooooth motherfucker

Aww!
That reminds me of the funny story about the Korean couple in an Anchorage bar.
Whilst... Must be a Brit!

11:48 AM
whilst?

In the new question.
Americans never say whilst.
We think it's quaint.

another note for the big meeting
we also say 'learnt'
and 'shan't'
and 'fortnight'

I can't even remember what Fortnight means.

2 weeks
fourteen nights
i'll see you in a fortnight

We say learnt, but we spell it learned.
Shan't is rare, but not unheard of. It makes me think of Harry Potter.

11:56 AM
Harry Potter being written by a Brit...

If forced to guess I think I would've come up with two weeks, but I'm not sure.
I vaguely remember learning as a kid that it was more than a day.

there's also sennight, meaning a week, but that's archaic

That one I have never heard.

you have now

A fun little bit of trivia about Harry Potter is that Rowling insisted that all of the actors be from the UK.
Which really pissed off Rosie O'Donnell who wanted to play Mrs. Weasley.

12:00 PM
pfff

I think it was Rosie O'Donnell...

Julie Walters is always a good choice

She looks like she would be great in the role.
I'm not sure I have seen her.

Julie Waters Walters

12:01 PM
Julie Walters = mrs weasley

No red hair?
Wow!
There is that CBE again

yeah, she's been going for a while has Julie

She actually looks better with her natural hair IMO
But I adored Mrs. Weasley
Both in the books and in the movies
Classic mom

she certainly did for Helena Bonham-Carter

I hated her in Les Miserables.
Totally wrong for the character.
Mme. Thenardier should not be sexy.
One of the great lines in the book is Valjean seeing her bridal veil. He shutters at the thought that she was once a virgin.
They also ruined my favorite song' but that's not the actors fault, I blame the director.
Weird that a comma became an apostrophe.
I'm sure I said comma
I think I would remember saying apostrophe accidentally.
Here we go, food pictures. It's been a while.
I'm not to try to make this pretty, though.

12:18 PM
it also heard 'shudders' as 'shutters'
that's very American

Yes!
The hardest thing about this program is going to be able to see the errors.
Like the way I skip words...I just won't see it.
Especially homophones.
I'm chatting in ELL too. And writing an answer on main. And baking bread. Everything but cleaning.
I give this brand a way to that guy! I told him I would! The one who helped me with groceries a few weeks back.
Bread brand
I can also tell it to correct. But I'm not good at it yet.
It tends to just type correct.
But I don't think I'm doing anything wrong, it just doesn't get it yet.
It must be that Iowan accent.

must be

One of the first things that you do with this program is tell it where you're from.
What a loaded fucking question
Big sigh, do you have a pencil?
Well, my bread is going in the oven. When it's done, I'm turning off my computer. I've got to get some work done.
Tomorrow's my inspection then my big date is this weekend. Then I get to move. Jesus.

12:35 PM
stand by your beds!

???
I was just asked in ELL what Iowa means!
:-)

evidently they don't say 'stand by your beds' in the US Army

Holy shit I said :-)

it's the stereotypical Sergeant Major's yell when he bursts into barracks for a surprise inspection

No I thought it maybe "stand by your man"!

12:38 PM
that's the Navy ;)

:-) Laugh
CN does not like that joke.

haha
if you join the navy, that's what you have to be prepared for
you're fair game even to civilians
I've noticed a growing trend in people using 'I've' incorrectly
I don't have the technical knowledge to describe why this is wrong, but it obviously is

Well, substitute I have. If it works, it's correct.

No, it's not

Okay explain.

12:49 PM
3 mins ago, by ElendilTheTall
I don't have the technical knowledge to describe why this is wrong, but it obviously is
You just don't use 'I've' in that context

I've is a contraction of I have.

I know that
i'm not a fucking moron
when have you ever heard I've used in a similar context?
it just doesn't scan

I don't get it.

again, when have you have ever seen 'I've' used in that context before?
when have you ever seen "What could I've done?"

The growing trend I've noticed lately, is using a possessive instead of a plural.

12:51 PM
as opposed to 'What could I have done?'
@Jolenealaska oh christ, that's as old as the hills
people can't use apostrophes, that's old news

I've noticed that more lately, but that doesn't mean much.
that it

Nice!
And look at that, available for the Kindle.

yes indeedy

And I have just enough left on my dad's gift card.
:-)
