Blessed keyboard!
@ElendilTheTall I saw your "Marco" last night, but I couln't respond because I didn't have a damn keyboard. I spilled orange juice into mine, and killed it.
I even tried to respond by copying and pasting :)
That quickly became ridiculous.
Remind me if you want to hear it that I have a new CN is the biggest ass in the world story.
(regarding the keyboard)

11 hours later…
2:01 PM
hello, anybody here?

Hi rummi!

hi @Jolenealaska how are you?
I'm so happy.
I CAN ROLL!
I managed the Eskimo roll today. It worked three times.

Pretty good that I have a keyboard now. CONGRATS!

Next goal is to manage it 30% of the time
then I won't need a friend to stand beside me to guard me
because I have around 3 tries to come up before my air is used up
I can manage a bit longer, but it gets unpleasant and I let them help me up instead
but if I can trust myself to come up 1 time out of 3, I'll continue training on my own until I get it every time

How much of the challenge is physical, and how much is mental, do you think?

2:06 PM
It was a mental for me for a long time
I'm not a good swimmer
and so for two months, I looked at the water and there was this voice in my head saying "don't fall in", as panicked as if a failure to come back up would have meant a certain death
which is of course nonsense. If everything else fails, I can just leave the boat and swim out.

Then kayaking is an awesome hobby for you :)

But I had no way to convince the voice that it's OK to let myself fall in
so I learned to tip my boat into the water and come back up while holding fast to the pool edge

I don't there is a better thing we can do for ourselves than to get out of our comfort zone.

and even then, each week, I had to convince myself to get my head into the water

I need to a bit of that myself.

2:10 PM
I'd start with tipping my boat vertically a few times, holding the edge with my hands, and coming back up without getting my face under water
and at some point, I was very good at that. But the next step, using a stack of styrofoam pads instead of the solid edge, had me in panic again
and even when I had managed it with 3 and then 2 pads one week, next week I had to start from the edge
but then, something happened, I think it was getting thrown into white water in the first week of the year and coming out all right

Yep :)

so the first saturday of the year, it felt rather easy getting my face into water. I stayed at the edge only, because I didn't want to bother a helper
second saturday of the year, it was my birthday, last week
there I thought "now I want to do this for myself, for my birthday"
went through edge and a stack of pads, then worked up the courage to do it with a single pad
and this is where it starts getting real, because two pads still float well on the water
but when I push on a single pad, it moves under my hands while my hips push the boat up. It's not solid.
and then I got somebody to help me
first I pushed myself off his hands
and then I tried with the paddle, but wasn't able to get it right. He needed to push me a bit, always
today I went through the early stages quickly, then tried with the paddle again, and a helper
another helper this time, he also brought the paddle in the right position for me a few times
and then at some point, I managed it without him helping
I havent' had this feeling since I was 9
my grandma taught me to ride a bicycle

Neat!

at first, she'd hold the bicycle behind me and run with me
and when she let me go, I'd fall
but I always yelled at her to let go of the bicycle because I want to try it for real
so, at one point, I yelled but didn't fall
and I yelled more and still didn't fall
I got angry and turned to tell her that I want her to let go of the bicycle
and saw that she isn't holding me anymore
I promptly fell :)
Sorry, I was so focused on my kayak story
how are you
and what's with your keyboard story?

The feeling of realizing that you're doing it on a bike for the first time is a huge right of passage. So is that silliness of falling the first time you realize that you're not being held :)
I am soo glad you asked.

2:18 PM
@Jolenealaska yes, I think the kayak thing was a rite of passage for me too
only I'm not so sure if the real good rite of passage was the time I came up after a roll
or two weeks earlier, when I looked at the water and thought "I'll tip into it now" and let myself tip, without internal resistance

Get this, I killed my keyboard with a glass of OJ. OK, I'm not the first, won't be the last.

drinks are the keyboard's natural enemy

I remembered from the drama of CN's computer being down and me fixing it without a clue what I was doing (thanks to you and Tall), that CN had a spare keyboard.
I called him and asked to borrow it.

Most of the time I'm fixing my computer I also have very little clue of what I'm doing. Or, at least, without a clue what's wrong.

It wasn't until I saw it that I remembered that it had a ps/2 connection, which is not compatable with my computer.
He uses a wireless keyboard that he bought as an upgrade.
The ps/2 was original with his computer. The wireless uses a USB.
When I realized that his spare had a ps/2 I said, l oh crap, this won't work for me, and I can't buy a new keyboard until I can get to the store (the weather was really bad).
Now, if you were him, what would you do know?

2:31 PM
I assume it's a rhetorical question. Sure, if I were me, I'd let you have the wireless keyboard and use the PS/2 myself until you can get a new one.

I hinted eight ways to Sunday that he could save me a lot of grief by doing just that.
He did not get the hints. Finally I said, "You know, most people would just offer."
HUH??
When he finally deigned to "get it" you would have thought I was asking for a kidney.

You know, I have stopped dropping hints at men
the majority never develops the skill to read between the lines, and has no interest in developing it

This one was just so damn...DUH!

being blunt helps. I mean, be blunt in what you want, not in telling him what you think of him :)

I finally shamed him into "offering" by reminding him that I have been paying for his internet for two years, and ultimately (with help from friends), I was the one who fixed his computer.
As soon as I got up to my apartment with the wireless keyboard, he called to say that the ps/2 keyboard didn't work.

2:39 PM
@Jolenealaska really? this would be very strange

I'm pretty sure he was lying, since it had just worked when his 'puter crashed.

keyboards are a very reliable piece of hardware, they tend to work under any OS without requiring special drivers and stuff. And if a keyboard does act weird, it's usually a USB. PS/2 is much simpler, and there is nothing in it to break.

The inconvenience of using a keyboard he didn't like as much trumped my not having a keyboard at all. And it's not like he takes it off the desk, he never actually moves it.
That is how much of a selfish SOB he is.
2 days of the horror of keyboard with a cord. REALLY??

yes, selfishness is a plague.

He doesn't see it.

2:45 PM
and one which can't easily be dislodged. Normally, socially undesirable behavior is regulated by members of your social circles showing discomfort or displeasure at your actions.
but if you are selfish, you just disregard the signals.

He thinks "because it's mine" is a normal way to think.

In my language, the idiom for such things is "he's missing the first 7 years"
meaning that he hasn't been properly socialized as a child

Yep.
Total change of subject.
How do you fell about this? Dupe or no?

Q: Cooking, freezing, recooking, and refreezing chicken

Nbuckner1I boiled a whole chicken, then froze the cut up parts. I then cook different meals but want to know if I can refreeze the leftovers from the dinners.

probably dupe. We have discussed both the food safety aspects and the taste aspects of refreezing.

Fair enough, I knew it could go either way.

3:01 PM
I'd have to search around to find the exact original though. I agree with your point that it's not a dupe by food safety standards alone, as the OP does not limit the question to them.

3:11 PM
I wrote a comment that makes it clear that I don't mind either way. I think there is a dupe out there, but the one that is proposed isn't it.

1 hour later…
4:34 PM
weird. a coffee site.
And it just got 100% commitment.

Hmmpff.
My attitude to that has been soundly downvoted.

Q: Wouldn't (almost) every question here be on-topic for Seasoned Advice?

Ben MillerProposal: Coffee Looking at the sample questions for this site, it look like, other than the open-ended question about opening up your own coffee shop, every question here would be on-topic for Seasoned Advice. Why do we need a separate site for Coffee?

Although, it was at -3, it's now at -2.
Funny how used to things like "vote counts" one quickly becomes. I'd really like to see the stats on that.
Woo Hoo! I just got my second gold badge on ELU. Wow, I almost feel like, fluent.

3 hours later…
7:46 PM
@Jolenealaska a real Iberico is outside of my budget. But the simple Serrano is mighty tasty too.
I mean, I've eaten Iberico in slices, but I couldn't afford a leg of it.

Yes...I've never acually had honest to goodness Iberico.
I mean, for real, fed only acorns? :)
Ok, come on:
$1,200

The Americans are crazy
or not crazy, there probably just isn't a market for it
Here it's 40 Euro/kg if you buy a whole leg

No cool stand.
Pfft

8:06 PM
@Jolenealaska boo

Hi sweetie!

hey sugar
what's shakin'

I have just fallen in love with a new show from Amazon.

Have you seen Transparent?

8:09 PM
is that the one with the guy who 'is' a woman

Yep. It's takes all of gender-bending that is hysterical and combines it with all that is piognant.
I am really impressed.
And it has boobies.

:)
The sex scenes are actually a bit shocking to an American, they are not pulling punches.

Did you have to cast yourself on to your chaise longue with a case of the vapuhs?

No, my "straightness" is less rigid than even that.
If gay was white, and straight was black, I would be charcoal.

8:19 PM
hot but dusty?
:D

So I am not completely without appreciation of boobies.
Speaking of....have you heard about the Supreme Court and Gay Marriage (lately?)

can't say I have no

Well, they have announced that will take on questions this term (so by June, I think) that could lay it down for all 50 states.

It could be over (and, being the court prognosticator that I am) and I think it will be.
I think they have been waiting for just the right cases.
And they have found them.

8:33 PM
well, here's hoping

Are we going to actually have equal opportunity under the law? Or is that just a slogan? I am pretty sick and God-damned tired of it seeming to be the latter (in way more ways than one).

Equal opportunity as long as you're north of the Mason-Dixon line, perhaps

South is worse, but all states are guilty.
Did you kinow that Alaska has more than double the rate of sexual assault than the #2 state?

I did not know that

And sexual assault is actually a euphanism...

8:42 PM
my knowledge of crime statistics of individual states is patchy at best...
:P

Forcible rape is actually the right term.
It's booze and extremely rural conditions.
It's a cultural thing that may take decades to even understand, much less fight.

what is the proportion of men to women in Alaska?

It has just become 50/50.
A decade ago it was more like 75/25.
Ah...2 decades ago. Sometimes I forget that I'm old.

a problem of old age

Yes, I think I'm not the only one :)
This is more your cup of tea than mine. 20ppm = what %?

8:56 PM
0.002

I don't want to think that hard right now.
TY

me either
Google is your friend

:)
Nice
On that note, I muist sleep.
G'night
